The story so far:

Four hundred years ago, Krael was one of the largest cities in western Alastari.
Iaye and Point were mere suburbs of Krael, and Iaye was not on an island but on a
longer peninsula that stretched outward from point. Krael was destroyed, sunk
beneath the waters of the Trier, by the power and carelessness of her wizards. The
force of the cataclysm sank the land between Iaye and Point, making Iaye into an
island, and affected the land of what is now Andoria for miles inland: some coastal
towns were submerged, others found themselves farther inland than they had ever been,
and the earth was opened and spewed fire and steam at Seam. Most of the people of
Krael perished in the disaster, and it was long believed that all the wizards did so.
It turns out that this was not exactly true. The wizards only had, at the most,
a few seconds' warning, but to a wizard facing death, a few seconds can be...a
lifetime. The ways in which they preserved themselves varied, but the strongest of
them, the one who might arguably be named as the cause of the destruction of Krael,
survived by projecting himself into the future.
His name is Khaldren, and he's been here longer than you think.
Long enough to build up a power base, raise Krael from beneath the Trier, and
become the hidden ruler of the Aruaki Clanhold.

They say that the Arcanum, the magical foundation of Ghea, or at least the
foundation of magic on Ghea, has been declining for years. They say this is normal,
an effect of a seasonal cycle vaster than men can understand, three thousand years,
five thousand years, who knows how long? They say the power will eventually return.
Two years ago, a magician suggested that Khaldren might be the cause of the
decline, that he might be gathering all the power of Ghea to himself. He was
probably wrong, and anyway, he died soon thereafter.
The easily-available magical energy that used to be as common as air is gone,
and the greatest remaining source is blood. Any living thing releases power at its
death. Sudden death releases more power than slow death. Animals release more power
than plants. Big animals more than small ones. Warmblooded animals more than those
with cold blood. High intelligence more than low. And the greatest power is
released by those who have the strongest affinity for magic: the magicians who can
manipulate it, and the creatures--the shapeshifters--who live because of it.
In seizing the Aruaki Clanhold, Khaldren has taken control of the largest
reservoir of blood magic in Alastari.

And made implacable enemies of the strong magicians who have interested
themselves in the Aruaki people.
Adeolar, half-elven sun priestess and mistress of fire magic is one. Wise Old
Fandil of Ardivent is another. The Adantri Cho is a third.

At the beginning of their efforts, a stranger appeared and said that Khaldren's
efforts involved two different but linked worlds, Ghea and one other. They attempted
to begin with the problem in Ghea, which, after all, was right in front of them.
Khaldren, or some watchdog spell he had set up, cast them promptly into that other
world, out of his way, and separated the three magicians from the gladiators who were
helping them. The gladiators are adventuring along a different thread at the moment.
The magicians fought their way back to Ghea, appearing in Krael, from which they must
now escape.

Krael was a mess, which was not surprising in a ruined city that had spent four
hundred years under the waters and the silt of the Trier. No building was intact,
and the streets and semi-enclosed spaces were full of stinking mud.
Most of the buildings and streets were full of mud. Here and there, buildings
had been cleared, and walkways scraped clean down some of the main streets. The
three magicians had emerged in the lower part of the city, near the water's edge,
which was marked by a massive wall of new construction. They had fought one battle
with a Kraelian mage commanding a squad of golems, and won. But they had to assume
that the magic used must have alerted someone in the city. The water edge of the
city was nearer, but only the landward edge, where it rose to become the peninsula of
Point, offered a likely chance of escape.

Recapitulating the last actions of the three magicians:

They turned another corner and emerged onto what might have been an avenue in
the old days of Krael, before it drowned. A broad open way of stone and mud, lined
with rubble, ran past them, down a slope to a wall in one direction, up to a low
bluff in the other.
"Now that," Fandil said, "is very interesting." He was staring at the wall
downslope from them.
"Why?" Cho asked. "I know nothing of Krael, but cities often have walls...."
"Unless I am greatly mistaken, and I studied the records of Krael intensively at
one time, this is Maringellis Way," Fandil said. "It ran from one of the landward
gates to the waterfront, and there was no wall at the foot of it."
"There is now," Adie said. "I presume that's the new waterfront." She swept a
glance along the wall. "Too easy to get trapped down there. We need to move
upward."
"Yes, yes," the old mage said, sounding testy. "But it would be interesting to
know WHY there is a wall there now. It must have required considerable work in the
present to erect it, don't you think?"
"Probably," Cho agreed. "But we really don't have time to stand here and wonder
about it, much less go and look." But he matched Fandil's intent stare.
"The lake!" Adie said. "What if that wall is keeping out the lake?"
"If less of Krael rose than we see, and they built a wall and pumped it out?"
Cho asked.
"That must be what they did!" Fandil now shared Adie's excitement. "If we
could breach that wall, we might drown most of the city again--"
"And ourselves with it, if we don't get moving," Cho finished.
"The shore is closer than the landward bluff--"
"And a trap, whether we breach the wall or not." Cho took each of his
companions by an arm and turned them upslope toward the bluff. "We can think about
letting the lake back in later. Now we should walk, not run, toward the dry ground."
"Not...? Oh." Fandil slapped himself on the head with his free hand. "Running
would be too conspicuous, I suppose. Especially for old folks like you and me. I'm
sure Adie could run very beautifully...but that would also draw attention."
"Unless the magicians here are all sworn celibates," Cho agreed.
The avenue was less clear than it had appeared at first glance. Four hundred
years under the lake had cracked and shifted the paving stones, layered them with
mud, and added a lot of miscellaneous debris, some of it gruesome and all of it rank
with decay. Paths had been tramped through the muck, but they were only a minor
improvement. Until the three travelers reached a major cross-avenue which Fandil
said was the Kingsway, which had once gone from the city's main gate to the royal
palace, an edifice that seemed to be still underwater out in the strait. This had
been cleared of debris and the mud scraped back from a ten-foot-wide aisle down the
center.
"Faster going if we follow the Kingsway," Fandil panted. Though the three of
them were not running, they were walking...very briskly.
Everyone looked both ways, and then ahead on up the slope.
Adie spoke for them all. "No. This Kingsway won't take us where we need to go.
Onward and upward."
They went onward and upward in grim silence for several minutes.
"I expected trouble sooner," Cho murmured. "It's almost insulting that nobody
NOTICED our arrival."
"Better insulted than attacked," Fandil retorted.
"There's somebody up ahead," Adie said. "Lots of somebodies. By that big...
might be a palace or a temple. Very near the bluff."
"Looks like a crew clearing it." Fandil, who had been using his staff as an aid
to steady walking over the uneven ground, picked it up and shook mud off the buttcap.
"We may be in for another fight."
"Will be," Adie corrected. "We'll be going right past that place."
"We'll have to," Cho agreed. "If we start wandering all over Krael trying to
keep out of sight, we'll never make it out of the ruins."

To be continued next cycle with new material.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Hi Aruak,

It is an honor to serve as Duelmaster, but I wanted to take this opportunity to
apologize to the friends, family, and management of Skirmish. I did not intend to
kill and regret the outcome of the fight. My condolences.

                                      SPY REPORT

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARUAK CITY to
see what's new. Uncool, MANIACAL TUFTS. I mean 0-0-0 is bad. Will they will be
allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training practice! What was the name of that
team who got 4-1-0 this turn for a total 257-140-7 you ask? (Sure) COLORIFIC's
their name, and fighting's their game! MVP award for WOLFBROTHER? SCARLET KNIGHTS
II's proud of it after beating JEAN FELIX and getting 22 points. Talk about yer
major upsets! JEAN FELIX's match with WOLFBROTHER cost it a loss of 21 points! Like
KRILL CAVALRY's ROCKIE DEE is sweating since she got challenged by Duelmaster
JEREMIAH JAY COOKE! This Duelmaster is like something else! JEREMIAH JAY COOKE
stopped ROCKIE DEE dead in hers tracks! Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob
to his teammates? Don't ask me!
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. The warriors
of WAR-C-KERS must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys
know something that I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why GERFEL'S FRIENDS'
been avoiding WAR-C-KERS so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can KRILL
CAVALRY's KORO CLOUD be more popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is
that really the same?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? What a bummer! HURT got wasted by DESIGNATED SLACKER! But with a
7-5-1, I guess ELFQUEST aren't too bummed. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you
guys can do?
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Congratulations to Jeremiah Jay Cook, Duelmaster. Drinks are free at The Bulldog Inn
for The Duelmaster. Perhaps some serious tipping will be necessary to drown the
sorrow of the kill and loss of Skirmish and the loss of Superficial Hitman. A
bittersweet week! -- Kennelworth

JGW -- A 14-1-1 in the last three turns? Seems awfully convincing to me. A salute
to you and your winners. -- Kennelworth

Tankesh -- Why, whatever do you mean by that? -- Kennelworth

Elinae -- Very, very lucky. -- Bull Horn

JGW -- I thank you for the compliments on my longevity and success, even though I
know you meant Mino, who just reached his 1000th win with his critters. I will pass
your message along to the old pirate. -- Kennelworth

Windchaser -- Well, I guess I am sorry, too, since I did not leave you to your peace
and quiet. I did enjoy the win, however. -- Aries

Wolfbrother -- I truly feel like you are a "brother", so I appreciate your letting me
win that one. -- Man's Best Friend

Velvet Finish -- It sure was. I really, really, really liked the finish. I hope
your itching stops soon. -- Flea Bag

Rockie Dee -- You really put it to me! You are my better. Salute. -- Bull Horn
(tooting rather lightly)

The Singing Bandit -- I did not have what was needed to topple one of your great
skill. I salute you, the true warrior. -- Magenta Maggot

Tankesh, me matey -- This'n old pirate bea right hyere fer yon takin'. Aye. -- Mino

Damascus -- I surely needed that! I wasn't sure I could win. Thank you. Thank you.
-- Carmel Camel

Geeamos -- Are you part of Amos and Andy? Next time don't try kissing me. I won't
turn into a prince, you know. (And get something to kiss a little harder with!) --
Tangerine Toad

Natas -- That was a popular brawl and a popular finish. -- Turquoise Tiger

Jon Fleet -- That was pleasant. Shall we try again? -- Violet Vulture

Whining Fiona -- Cry about your spilt milk, little lady. Here's a handkerchief,
albeit, somewhat used. You are lucky to be alive, yet you act the part of the Bimbo.
My, my. Crybaby! -- Yellow Streak, Proud Colorific; Purple People Eater, Proud
Colorific Mgr.

Chuck Davis -- You over-the-hill fogey! Let's try that again on MY terms, you pimp!
-- Silver Lining, Proud Colorific

Walk The Line -- You didn't walk it long enough. You have to walk and walk and walk,
you know. -- White Lie

Treestump -- That was like chopping down a pine tree. Soft and swift. Soft and
swift. -- Black Plague

Congratulations Jeremiah J. Cooke! Duelmaster! Drinks are free at the Bulldog.
I'll tell Tankesh to issue challenges to help you out and stay on top. -- Adie

JGW -- You should pat yourself on the back for that one (me sending Kiri to test her
mettle, despite style disadvantage, against you, and for keeping me from a 5-0 turn),
but not too much. I was testing something out with that challenge, so you can
consider that 1-0 record against us a freebie. Personally I think you got a bit
lucky. Well done never-the-less. Enjoy the lead. -- Tankesh
P.S. How sick is that!? You don't even need to challenge to get easy wins, you just
randomly match up with those you normally would challenge! Lucky bastard....

Ron Steele -- Unbelievably bested? I agree. -- Kiri

Koro Cloud -- Ah, that's the good stuff! -- Airk

Paladium Haze -- Not bad, but no cigar. Teach more and I might let you win next
time! -- Kaelen

Khalhums Dwarf -- Is this an attempt to ignite elf vs. dwarf antipathy by our match
up? -- Elinae

Scarlet Rose -- Did you know I ecuonorp words backwards every won and then? I hadn't
noticed. -- Donald

The Consortium did my teams proud at the tournament, proxying my seven to a 63.2% w/l
record, and 28.6% TVs. Thank you Kennelworth and crew! -- Adie

G. Puerco & Kennelworth -- Ok, before I jump into this, what exactly would you expect
from an exhibition tournament between Aruak TCs? The Commission, as I am aware, has
never let LPs fight in basic arenas, and several of them may be retired, semi-
retired, or even at totally disproportionate skill levels? -- Adie (ooc: Is this
just a spot you want me to write or such?)

Bull Horn -- Get above me again, and I'll show you just how lucky you were to win
that! -- Elinae
P.S. I'll grudgingly accept your comment on my beauty. Good stuff. :)

Kennelworth -- Did you like that spot with Lord Xiang? Great! I wrote it! :) --
Adie

JGW -- I have no plans on taking over the reins of my team's activities again in
Aruak City. I don't respond well to missives such as yours from people of your
'character', which is why I placed Tankesh in charge of my teams in the first place.
If you have issues or insults with and for him, please direct them his direction.
I'm sure he will respond appropriately considering your attitude and background. --
Lady Adeolar "Blackwood" Marianka, Manager of the Bulldog Inn

Michael Eldritch -- Welcome to Aruak City! Heart and Soul of Andoria. We are so
glad you have introduced yourself, AND decided to be a part of our fine culture here.
Your respect for our ways makes you one of us. Come and mingle with the other
managers and warriors at the Bulldog Inn. And ask as many questions as you wish!
Good luck, we are happy to have you. -- Lady Adeolar "Blackwood" Marianka, Manager of
the Bulldog Inn, owner of the Tuft Tuggers (a.k.a. Adie)
P.S. There are no Dark Knights here that we know of.

Michael Eldritch -- Sorry about my boys giving you a beating, not exactly the kind of
introduction a new manager would prefer. Welcome to Aruak, I run the Tuft Tuggers
for Adie. Stick it out, and enjoy! -- Tankesh

Cold Cast -- It takes finesse to not swing first, but end the fight swinging last.
That's my definition, brutal has nothing to do with it. Good luck. -- Kaelen

JGW -- And I loathe men of your 'style'. But I might claim that drink anyway...the
next time the Bulldog is not so...watched. -- Fiona

Kennelworth -- Thank you for noticing. Funny, when I came in here I said I would
play by my own rules, and it seems they mimic the Andorians. So far it has carried
my team well. To the next twelve turns. -- JGW

Purple People Eater -- No, I can't beat you, but my warriors can beat your warriors
finally. -- JGW

Tank-Boy -- Funny, I do not use Andorian honor for you (read, I don't avoid your
teams) since there is nothing to honor there. You want to knock 50% or better, then
go for it. That record would put me smack-dab in the middle of the pack, so
something must be right about it. A lot of those fights against 'maintained' teams
came at the same commission randomly matching us together (including a bloodfeud
revenge I never sought to obtain). You want to live in your fantasy world; be my
guest. You are on my short list here 'buddy.' I'll feel free to challenge your
warriors at any time, and I will not avoid. Evidence of this is your recent
challenge to Ron Steele. Be careful what you wish for. You may just get it. -- JGW

Adie -- You must know what it is like putting up with Tankesh. Brash, hotheaded, and
just plain stupid! I tell him he's second class for working for you and he construes
it to mean you are second class. I know how to treat a lady with respect since every
lady is a possible mother. Without a mother no one would be here. Please excuse his
insipid comments and understand I do not bear you ill will. But if you have a man
working for you, or 'volunteering' I will feel obligated to make him the brunt of my
jokes. Even if I don't need the help to make him look like an idiot. -- JGW

SwineTiger -- Do not fret, my brother. Random matchups are part of arena life, and
so was with this. I am glad you were the beneficiary and not some Andorian scum.
Good show and continue the great work in Aruak City. -- JGW

Gerfel's Friends -- I have no sympathy for your loss. You chose to challenge Jean
Felix and play with fire. I will not care what you think about your loss, nor will I
care what ends up happening with your bloodfeud, but remember your Andorian
counterparts will see if you are operating with 'Health, Humility, Honor.' -- JGW

Kiri -- Maybe we should call you "Littlespear" instead of Dragonspear. -- Ron Steele

Superficial Hitman -- You should ask those healers for a refund on your cafeteria
plan. -- Jean Felix

Flea Bag -- Aw, a bloody TP...have fun getting all those dents out of your shields.
-- Velvet Finish

Kaelen -- I'm still a bit dazed, but I believe you mentioned help? -- Paladium

Camel -- Hmm...that was quick. -- Damascus

Donald -- Chalk up another "Scarlet" lose. -- Scarlet Rose

Slacker -- Michael says I have one more chance...any ideas? -- Cold Cast

All -- I've been told that Aruak City has helpful managers, such as the General who
helped Hammurabi some time ago. My arcane compilations have been of little use to
date, so how about a round of drinks and some strategy talk? -- Michael Eldritch

Bull Horn -- On and on and on and on and.... I thought my ears would NEVER stop
ringing. This is, like, totally too much. Don't do it again, okay? -- Rockie Dee
P.S. And you DID make a career error. You should have been a foghorn or something.

Violet Vulture -- You'd be a sweet little thing if it weren't for the beak. -- Jon
Fleet
P.S. And that purple neck, that's...odd.

Aries -- You're the biggest ram I ever saw. Those horns! Do you knock down walls as
your day job? -- Windchaser

Airk Arcstone -- Odd name. Not from out my way. -- Koro Cloud
P.S. I probably need a strategy change.

Kennelworth -- Gawds, I hope not! If Aradi was the heart and soul of Andoria,
well...the mind boggles. -- Leeta

Man's Best Friend -- I have this notion that we're talking at cross purposes. --
Leeta

Velvet Finish -- Why? And where? -- the Scribe

The Dark Knights sat at the Dark Table with grim faces. All present knew that there
could be no quarter. The Forces of Desolation would be unleashed. There would be no
turning back, no mercy and no hesitation to do what was necessary. Teeth gritted and
knuckles whitened with fury as the IMPERIAL PROCLAMATION was signed by each Dark
Knight.
AS OF JULY 1, 2006 -- WAR IS DECLARED ON THE ALLIANCE KNOWN AS THE VENDETTA

pick an arena, issue a challenge, actually win something, and then maybe (and we
stress maybe) you may speak. You may come to our home arenas (8, 31, and 47) and
confront us, but we suggest you learn to win in your own "home" arena (52) first.
