AMON THE GIANTSLAYER By Adeolar Major contribution to Chap. 1 & 7 by Generalissimo Puerco CHAPTER 4 The Hurinwood, outside Aruak City, 12 years ago: Amon awoke with a headache that would make a giant proud. His head throbbed right above his left eyebrow as if his heart had implanted itself between his skin and his skull. He lifted his hand before him to make sure he was still small. He smiled as he remembered Adie's spell had worn off a long time ago and he was still his normal 3'3". He was laying on his side still when a foot tall person walked up with a club. Amon's smile disappeared. "Watch this MiKaila." Amon's eyes went wide right before he saw about six more images of the little twerp fade into darkness.... Amon sputtered awake this time with a splash of water. When he looked around he saw that same one foot tall guy standing on his chest, for Amon was now on his back. Amon growled and tried to grab him, but found that he had been bound and tied with a dozen small ropes. The tiny woodsman standing on him was scruffy with primitive clothes. The little man pushed his chest out in pride as he threw away a miniature bucket and pulled out a spear. His tail swayed back and...Amon squinted, 'A tail!' Amon squirmed, "Release me or I'm gonna ki..." The Brownie brought the butt end of his spear down upon Amon's head; SMACK!! "Shut up! You are nothing." He raised his chin, "If I want to smack you around, you can't do anything about it." He stuck his tongue out at Amon. Then Amon heard the most soothing but also commanding voice, "Rouie, release the Halfling. And stop pestering him." Amon couldn't see where the voice was coming from, but the little runt on his chest got off and drew a little sword. Then he noticed the other dozen brownies around him. They all started cutting the ropes. As soon as Amon was free, he stood and threw off the strings, roaring at the little men. They went squealing for cover. Before Amon could chase them though, the voice came again, "Stop!" Amon spun around. There she was. Amon's eyes swam, and that, combined with his head wound, made him stumble around disoriented. Darkness was edging his vision, but he could see the Nymph waving her had in front of him. Then...she was his best friend in the whole world. No, the whole universe. Amon looked at the author..."Hey, wait a minute...I don't have any friends." The nymph asked him to sit down, and guess what...he did!! She smiled at him. That impossibly beautiful smile that only a god could bestow. Amon smiled back, but...he didn't know why. Grinning at her he said, "I don't smile. Why am I?" "I've cast a charm spell upon you." She paused, then told him to smile more, and Amon smiled hugely. She looked him over and looked at his equipment which was lying to her right in a pile, "Did you kill those wererats that were chasing me the other day?" Amon kind of swayed and bobbed his head like he was drunk for a minute, "Yep!" The nymph let out a sigh of relief and Amon smiled hugely again. She looked at him, "I thank you for saving me from those abominations...." Amon waved his hand in unconcern, "No problem." "My name is MiKaila. What's yours?" "I am Amon the Giantslayer, Hero of..." he put his hand to his head and toppled backwards. A second later he saw MiKaila standing over him with a concerned look on her face. He smiled once and saw her beauty disappear into the blackness.... Amon awoke shortly after in the most, well almost, desirable postion he could possibly imagine; her lap. MiKaila had his head in her lap and was looking at him as he began to smile once again, especially since his head felt well and he had such a spectacular view. Rubbing his head he said, "What did you do?" "I healed it. You'll be fine." Amon heard a few little chuckles all around him. His head rotated trying to get a glimpse of the little runts who had tied him up and clubbed him on the head. MiKaila noticed his anxiety, "Don't worry, Rouie and the others won't disturb you any more." Amon smiled, "You still got that 'charm' spell on me?" "Yes." Amon's smile went from ear to ear, "I hate that!" MiKaila continued, "I have a request to ask of you." Amon perked up grining. "I have a dear friend that has been captured by those wererats. If you rescue him, I will grant you anything you wish within my power." Amon laughed heartlessly, "Those wererats are nothing. I could...." "There are about twenty of them." One of Amon's eyebrows went up. "I think they have some kind of connection with a wizard in Aruak who is trying to round up rare creatures and people for who knows...." "Alright, alright. I get the point." Amon grinned. "I'll just do it all quiet like." MiKaila looked relieved. "My friend's named Kalin. He's easy to recognize because he is a unicorn." "Excuse me! A...a what?!" Amon leaped up and scowled at her. "You want me to rescue a horse?!" MiKaila's head lowered, hiding her face from him behind her hair, as she started to weep. "OK! OK! Don't give me that. I'll help you. Besides, you'd probably just charm me into doing it if I did't." She looked up and he gave her a toothy super hero grin, putting his hands on his hips and puffing out his chest which didn't make it much bigger than his belly. She giggled. Amon gathered his gear. "Alright, where is he?" MiKaila turned her head to the forest beyond the glade, "In a camp to the north of here. But be...." She looked back. He was no longer there; vanished silently into the misty morning forest. CHAPTER 5 Amon trudged off through the forest mumbling to himself, "How do I get into predicaments like this?" Amon looked at the audience, "This sucks." Heading north through the forest, it took Amon a whole day before he came across the camp. But there was no way to miss it! The place was a zoo. There were definitely more than twenty guards here, but they all appeared to be in human form right now. Huge tents and cages filled the meadow as the sound of whips and whining animals permeated the air. The scum running this slavery trade were outfitted well, appearing almost as if they expected a large enemy force to fall upon them. Amon desperately wanted to be that overwhelming force, but he was here for one reason only; MiKaila's unicorn, Kalin. Amon sat crouched in the shrubbery observing the camp. "Hmm...what should I get from MiKaila after I get her friend?" A big grin spread on his face. Amon padded into the camp chuckling quietly to himself. Amon silently made his way through the misty camp for an entire hour. Strange creatures and people, tied or caged, looked at him curiously. Some cried out to him for help, alerting guards, which forced Amon to split for short periods of time. Amon began ducking into the shadows to keep from being seen by the slaves too. Crouching under a log, Amon finally heard what he'd been waiting for. A horse neighing. Amon headed for a large pavilion where the noise was coming from. Amon ducked behind a nearby tent and watched. Three strong men were hauling on ropes tethered to a beautiful white steed with a two foot pearly white horn twisting from its head. They pulled it from several directions to keep its horn at bay. The unicorn heaved and pulled in its struggle, bringing one of the men close enough to cave its skull in with a hoof. They eventually clubbed it across the head and took it inside the tent. Amon crawled over to the tent and lifted one side a little to peak in. The unicorn was chained to the ground in four places and its horn was wrapped in cloth. Amon left as the men came out of the tent grumbling. He would wait till nightfall. That night, the encampment was silent and the full moon lit up flowing mists in a strange dance. Amon stalked through the mist, shortsword drawn. Spinning to one side, Amon ducked behind a tent as a tall lanky figure appeared only ten feet from him. The wererat's head whipped back and forth sniffing at the air. Amon gritted his teeth as it came within a foot of him. The wererat continued on through the mist. Ducking around a corner, Amon headed for the front of the unicorn's tent. At the sight of the halfling, Kalin the unicorn awoke on the ground, four chains linking him to pinions driven deep. Looking around the tent, Amon could only see one guard; a huge wererat sharpening a broadsword. As Kalin stood up the wererat stood also. Kalin began looking for an escape but saw none, so he tried to influence the rat with his telepathy. The wererat chuckled and approached, "Ahh...sad are ya. Not as sad as your gonna be when our wizard friend...UHH." Kalin lunged futilely with his horn and knocked down the rat. "Rrr,...you're gonna pay for...AHHHHH!!!" Suddenly a shortsword exploded through the front of his chest. Kalin backed up as a three foot form wiped its shortsword upon the dead wererat. "Amon the Giantslayer, at your service." Kalin sent a telepathic message. Amon looked down at the wererat and scowled at the unicorn. "He's a giant to me," said Amon irked by the horse's question as he indicated his size. Kalin nodded. Amon walked towards the unicorn, "Let's get those chains off and get out of here." Kalin looked down at Amon as he pulled out some lock picks. Amon looked up, "Ya, ya... you can thank me latter." Amon went to work, "I heard you, I'm hurrying." A few minutes latter Kalin's hooves were free. Kalin thanked Amon. "Sure whatever. What was that? You want me to climb on?" Kalin nodded. "OK." Amon leaped onto Kalin's back just as a wererat walked in. Kalin charged. The suddenly sprinting horse threw the halfling off-guard before he could gain his balance. He wasn't exactly good at riding. Holding on to Kalin's mane for his life, Amon yelled, "WHOOAAA!!" Just before Kalin trampled the wererat Amon reached forward and flung the cloth off his horn. The rat put up his arms in a pitiful attempt to ward off the rushing unicorn which crushed his body under its charge. Flying out of the tent, Amon held on and pulled himself forward. Looking ahead he snickered in disgust. He leaned forward so Kalin could hear, "Let me get this for ya." Amon reached towards Kalin's horn and pulled the wererat's arm off of it. "There ya go." He flung it into another guard's face as they rushed through the camp, with Amon laughing evilly. Before the other guards could even react, the two of them were whipping though the forest at a frenzied speed. Amon was holding on with one arm while flailing the other in protest of the branches slapping him in the face, "Ohhh...ah...ohh...ouch!!!" When the branches stopped coming Amon was going to protest when he saw a thirty foot wide cliff-banked river just ahead which Kalin was rushing towards. Kalin telepathically told Amon to hold on. Amon's eyes almost popped out of his head. His mouth opened just as Kalin leaped into the air, "OH SHIT!!!" Some short time later, Kalin trotted into MiKaila's glade. Amon was on his back not looking very happy. Arms folded and jaw clenched, Amon bounced up and down on Kalin with a billion little cuts from lashing tree branches and shrubbery. Amon leaped off of Kalin and pointed at MiKaila as she appeared from the trees, "You owe me for that one!" CHAPTER 6 Amon lay sprawled on the grass before the pool in MiKaila's glade, staring up at the sky when he heard the voice again. "Ha! Beat that you stupid Halfman, or whatever you are." Amon looked over to the brownie Rouie, "It's halfling, little fool." Amon glanced at the target they had set up. In it was a foot long spear almost dead center. "I could beat that blindfolded." "Alright, Halfling little fool, DO IT!" Amon casually pulled out a dagger, turned his head to the side to give the brownie a non-chalant look, and flung it. "Damn you! You know what?" Rouie stood right in Amon's face, "The only reason you win is because the point of your dagger is so big, it fills up the entire bullseye!" Amon gave him a big toothy grin. MiKaila came over to them with a platter of grapes. Amon and Rouie took some. "Thanks." Amon stuffed his mouth, "OK, lets get down to business." Amon sat up, "Hey Rouie." Rouie mumbled through a full mouth, "Ya." As soon as he looked up Amon flung a grape at him. Rouie fell back from the impact and had to use both hands and feet to remove the grape from his head. Amon looked to MiKaila, "Now you said you'd give me anything I wanted within your power?" "Yes. I owe you that. Anything." Amon glanced sidelong at MiKaila, "Are you ABSOLUTELY certain that I can have anything?" MiKaila scrunched her brow. What is this little man getting to? Maybe I should play it safe. "Anything I have you can have, Amon." Amon holds up a grape, scrutinizing it, "Oh, OK. I see. So only material possessions." "Well not necessarily. I can also provide favors." "No, no, that's OK. I know what I want." "But I haven't even shown you what I own." "I've seen everything I want." Amon stared at her, locking his brown eyes to her crystal blue eyes. MiKaila cocked her head in curiosity, but only for a short time before it dawned on her. She shook her head back and forth ever so slightly. But Amon caught the movement and smiled hugely while nodding his head yes. MiKaila's head went down. "No," she whispered. She looked up. Amon was still looking at her, "Yes." He got up and sat next to her side leaning towards her ear, "I...want...you." If you can imagine a jerk like Amon trying to look meek and humble, you deserve a prize. Amon's last three words struck MiKaila mortally. What did he want from her? Her body? She stole another peek at him. He was still quietly sitting beside her, staring, but with one difference; no cunningly devious smile. Then it clicked, she still had her 'charm' spell upon him. Could it be this vicious little person actually had feelings for her. I could just turn him down flat with my spell in control, she thought. Then she looked at him again, sitting so patiently with puppy dog eyes. She smiled slightly, he smiled back. When she giggled a little at the expression on his face, he sat forward and gave her a big hug. Rouie was watching the whole time with his jaw slack when he busted up at Amon. This three foot person was hugging a five foot tall lady as if she was his, and he was showing her affection. A person who was going to kill him earlier, and was the most annoying jerk in the whole world, was hugging HIS nymph. MiKaila responded in earnest, "Quiet Rouie! This is serious." She looked at Amon who was wandering away from her because he said he was going to pick flowers for her. "My 'charm' spell is on him. He's serious because my spell doesn't allow him to do anything that would hurt me; physically or emotionally. What should I do? I told him he could have whatever he wanted." She looked over to where Amon was. He was skipping along happily collecting flowers. She felt an inexorable force on her will pushing her toward what he wanted. As a being of magic, a spirit molded and bound to the Hurinwood, she didn't understand the entire nature of her being. But for such a magical spirit, her word was her bond. Rouie climbed up on a rock beside her. In a sarcastic tone he put in, "Why don't you just GIVE yourself to him." Rouie was chuckling heartily when MiKaila got up and went over to Amon leaving Rouie to drown in a newly found silence. "Amon. I have an answer to your wish...." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * The formation of Steel and Silk was, ironically, only intended to be a research project. Having pieced together fragments of many ancient texts, and consulted with forces best left unnamed, I had extrapolated a masterpiece of alloy and strategy-- single-minded and relentless. Knowing I would need others expertise concerning combat techniques, I hired a handful of individuals as "councilors." -- Damascus: Rolando Burnque by birth, a local bouncer and respected "strongarm." -- Paladium Haze: A man of many names, and son of an infamous "privateer." -- Scarlet Rose: A vengeance-driven goblin hunter, who sought an outlet for her rage. -- Velvet Finish: A mysterious dancer whom I mistakenly made a pass at. I named my creation Cold Cast, and in practice, his prowess so impressed the four, that they asked to stay on as an ARuak City team. Each had their own reason... -- Damascus: "I'm stronger that Cast, but he knows how to maximize his impacts. He's teaching ME now." -- Paladium -- "Even a creature of speelforged steel can know honor, but he must learn by example. I stay! -- Scarlet: "If he is to survive, he must learn to unleash his anger...I can teach him that." -- Velvet: "Practice counts for nothing without application. If the others say they're in, then so am I." Now, the beginning has been rough. Only Paladium and Velvet have tasted victory. They assure me that progress has been made, and that it's far too early to act judgemental. Meanwhile, I patiently continue my research, and with new insights, I will eventually try my hand again...next time there will be NO mistakes. -- Michael Eldritch, mgr. of Steel and Silk (DM-11), Penumbral Mists (DM-8) and Complusive Compiler of Matters Arcane + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Out of the Past #23 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + They picked their way across the Kingsway in silence and located the best route up the slope toward the bluff. It wasn't as simple and straight-forward as it appeared: the street that would have been their obvious route was choked with rubble from the collapse of an ornamental archway where it joined the Kingsway, though they could see that it was clear farther on. But to reach the cleared part, they were going to have to scramble over the rubble, which looked treacherous as well as filthy, or find some alternate route. All three of them surveyed the visible options. After a moment, Adie said, "Have you noticed the state of the Arcanum here?" "Yes," Fandil answered. His voice was like flint, like steel striking sparks off flint. "In flux, strentgh, direction, polarity, as it should only be around great works of magic...and it is stronger than anywhere else in Alastari at this time." He paused, then went on, "As though Khaldren, or these henchmen of his, have gathered all the magic from across Alastari and concentrated it HERE for his purposes." "I wouldn't have believed it possible to concentrate the whole Arcanum in one area," the sun priestess mused. She twisted one lock of flame-colored hair around her finger and frowned. "I know that heavy sudden use can tap out an area, until the rest of the Arcanum flows in and levels it again. So I suppose this might be the reverse of that...." "No." Cho was frowning, too, turning his head this way and that as though sniffing out an elusive scent. "No, I don't think so. The energy here isn't..." he shook his head, "I can't quite put a finger on it. But a lot of it is power from blood sources, for one thing. That has a distinct flavor. From tapping the arena systems in the Clanhold, and from the side effects of the arena system. If they are side effects, and not something the Greywand intended." "Explain that," Fandil barked. "Lady Sheila--" "I will explain," the Adantri said, "but not while we're standing here in plain sight. That alley over there looks fairly clear and seems to be going in the direction we want." Fandil glanced at it. "Fine." He moved that way, pausing only long enough to make sure both his companions were coming. "Explain." "First point," Cho said, climbing over a mound of muddy bricks. "Sheila is very old--three or four thousand years, at least--" "Her elven blood," Adie said. "A quarter elven," Cho agreed, "but also a quarter orc, and half human. This does not explain her age. That longevity is due, in one way or another, to magic. It is not natural to her original body. Even natural longevity extended to that length can be, at the least, unbalancing to the mind. Memories accumulate beyond what the mind can handle well. Biases and divergences become exaggerated." He shrugged, slipped in the mud, and slid down to bump into one wall of the alley. "There are ways of training the mind to handle that load," Adie said. She teetered on a clump of bricks and sprang away, coming down on a nearly clear spot with a splash of mud. "To be sure there are. If you recognize the need, have a trainer at hand, and are willing to take instruction. Maybe all three of those factors apply to her. We don't know, but they might. Or not." He waded through souplike mud to peer around a corner, gesturing for the others to wait. Fandil joined him at the corner, being enough taller to peer over Cho's head. There were people along the next stretch of the alley. Probably people. Maybe golems. They looked like half-changed Aruaki, and reminded him unpleasantly of the time of the plague a few years ago that had affected all shape-shifters. There was one "normal" person who seemed to be in charge, a weedy-looking middle-aged man in a magician's robe with a muddy hem. His back was to the three of them. Fandil raised his hand and flexed his fingers. Adie, who had come up behind him, grabbed his wrist. "No," she whispered. "Too conspicuous to use a spell, remember?" She put a half-brick in Fandil's hand. The old Ardiventi looked at her, at the brick, at the mage down the alley, and then grinned at her. Taking a half-step back, he cocked his arm, took careful aim, and let fly with the brick. It hit the weedy mage on the back of the head, hard; he staggered and fell, blood pouring from his broken skull. The workers turned on their fallen overseer instantly, beating him with the tools in their hands, or clawing at him--and many of them, half lion or tiger, had formidable claws. Cho drew in his breath with a hiss. "This entire area must be sensitized, all of Krael, perhaps." He glanced at Fandil and Adie. "Don't you feel it? Their violence and the blood they are shedding is feeding into the Arcanum." Adie frowned, raising her head as though testing the air for a scent. "Yes...it isn't supposed to do that, is it? There should be some elaborate spell or device--" Fandil muttered a curse, bitten off sharply. The others turned to follow his gaze. The workers who had finished destroying their overseer had now started on each other. "One of the side effects of the heavy use of blood magic," Cho said, his voice detached, dry as dust, "is an increased bloodlust manifested by all in the vicinity. Only our automatic magical shielding protects US from the influences." "Then if all the Aruaki arenas have blood-magic concentrators in use--" Fandil began. Cho nodded. "We have no time to waste standing here," Adie said. "We have work to do in Aruak City and elsewhere. Now." She stalked into the alley, the intensity of her purpose shimmering around her. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Why should I write a column? I'm the winner. I'm The Duelmaster. I'm a Proud Colorific. I'm a Lord Protector. Why shouldn't the loser write my column for ME. Can a Treestump write? Certainly can't fight. (chuckle) Great, look what I see below me. A couple of scumbags--Richard Hendrix and Onewolf. I like scum. I eat them for lunch! Don't know why Purple People Eater has Yellow Streak on our team. How can someone with a yellow streak be a warrior? Bah! I want Hendrix the most. Need to close that JGW's mouth! Four scumbags on a team?! FOUR! Sure sounds Delarquan to me! I guess I can brag a little. I am a 9-10-17-15-16-8-9 striker. I'm blessed in damage (Just try me out, pal.) and in attack. I crit with just about anything. I kill! Only one in this arena, cause the boss holds us back. (That damn Consortium contract!) Got a few more in tournaments however. Hope to get me one more in the arena. I do. Challenge me if you want to die. Avoid and hope it works. The Black Plague waits for no man or animal. SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of ARUAK CITY brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for SCARLET KNIGHTS, whose 0-2-0 this turn dropped them by 9 into 17th. Ha! MILITANT LEGION turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 4th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch GERFEL'S FRIENDS' heads swell from their 3-0-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see DESIGNATED SLACKER win a fight and gain 18 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, DESIGNATED SLACKER beat ARIES and ARIES lost 14 points. You're breakin' my heart. BLACK PLAGUE challenged TREESTUMP for ARUAK CITY's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And it's out with the old, in with the new, as TREESTUMP takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. JGW EXPIRATION, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was BULLDOGS. Ha ha ha ha! TREESTUMP was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. RICHARD HENDRIX was challenged by one of WOLFBROTHERS' warriors this turn, with ONEWOLF having a lead of 29 points going into the fight. Question now is, will ARUAK CITY accept this sort of tacky behavior? ONEWOLF beating RICHARD HENDRIX. The insult, the....yech! I guess I can give a little credit to VELVET FINISH of STEEL AND SILK for challenging up by 25 to TWO-S0PEAR. VELVET FINISH lost to get 9 points of recognition. Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and gone, and get to see if their team cared. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one. What does the ARUAK CITY arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of ARUAK CITY. I feel much better now. Hey, Lady Adie, you got your wish. -- Kennelworth Sledge -- Yep, I am very glad Doc came back and brought you along. (wink) -- Flea Bag Tankesh -- You are too hard on JGW. Rationalization aside, he is winning, and winning well. We shall see if he "holds on", but meanwhile--he deserves our salute. -- Kennelworth Tankesh -- Feel free to design and run a Total Parry. We will help you. This is a friendly arena, no? (chuckle) -- Kennelworth Michael -- Yep; come on over to The Bulldog Inn. There is much to be learned there. The first drink is on me. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Cold Cast -- Sure. Thanks for the advice. -- Flea Bag Black Plague -- Congrats to The Duelmaster. Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Windchaser -- Whaddaya mean, I'm neither a bull nor a dog? I have horns like a bull. (nicer, actually) I have a cud. I chase cats. I let some people pet me. I feel like a bull or a dog or both. Just because someone slipped and named me Aries??????? -- Aries Adie -- Nice historical presentation. Keep up the fine work. -- Kennelworth Cold Cast -- You challenged? Haven't you learned we Bulldogs are your bane? (but thanks for the thought) -- Bull Horn Jumpin' -- I bulled my way to that win, didn't I? (I said that just for you, Windchaser!) -- Aries Jean Felix -- I'll just bet you like cats better? -- Man's Best Friend QOW -- General trends for running styles--like AL/OE/KD plus armor. That's a BIG question, and we will try a short and sweet answer.... The less the armor, the allegedly faster and less endurance burn, but the less protection. Quick, decisive offensives tend to need little, and those who think defense first tend to need more. In general. In Andorian arenas, the expectation is lower KD's and not aiming for vitals (HE, CH, AB). In general, killers try for vitals, hitting legs can knock down (quite advantageous), hitting arms can drop weapons. OE's tend to determine your pace. Fast and furious usually means high. Intense defending (like dodging) tends to mean high. Slow and parrying can best be done with low offensive levels. In the middle might be the rest. Offensives tend to be run "hot" (high OE). Defensives tend to be run low. But there are "scum"/tank bashers and lungers and strikers and slashers and pikers and plungers which are more defensive. None of this is a simple yes/no. Read/devour Terrablood. Read the Arena 93 newsletter each turn. Get on the RSI site and ask questions. We will answer. -- Kennelworth and The Consortium Folk Fiona -- Thank you for the wonderful compliments. We deserve them! (grin) -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager Elinae -- Of course! To the winner goes the spoils--even if it is a mere tuft. -- Black Plague, Proud Colorific Ron Grizzard -- That'll teach you guys to brag about beating a Colorific. So there! Did you see stars? Colorful stars? -- Silver Lining Ron Steele -- That'll teach you guys to brag about beating a Colorific. So there! Did you see stars? Colorful stars? -- White Lie, Proud Colorific Richard Hendrix -- You're next! (And YOU cheat, meanie!) -- Yellow Streak, Proud Colorific Firewall -- I will give you credit. You were simply better than me. You cad! That will change. -- Golden Glow, Proud Colorific Treestump -- My bad; my good; my win. (Of course.) -- Black Plague Jon Fleet -- You have my permission. I always say, "grab what you can while you can, even if it is a whirlwind!". -- Turquoise Tiger Rockie Dee -- No duets with Bull Horn. You are pledged to me. -- Violet Vulture Natas -- Always a pleasure. Always a pleasure. -- Tangerine Toad Me critters bea hot! Aye! -- Mino Onewolf -- Very well "fought". We credit that one to the Doc. -- Turquoise Tiger Man At Arms -- Surprise; surprise! It is hard to move through all that melted caramel, eh? -- Carmel Camel For those who seem to have to know.... Black Plague was hi/low/LS/bash. -- Purple People Eater, Proud & Perfect Colorific Manager Congratulations to Black Plague, Duelmaster and Lord Protector! Drinks at the Bulldog for you. -- Adie I wouldn't congratulate that dork. -- Tankesh (rolling his eyes) Doc Steele -- Looks like I spoke too soon! Welcome back, Mr. Steele. Looking forward to dueling with you once again. -- Tankesh Kennelworth -- Figures you and Puerco would stick me with the work of arranging an exposition of Aruaki Tournament Champions. Not to be crass on my part, but isn't that kind of rude to volunteer somebody else for such a large task? -- Adie PPE -- You should be tsk tsking yourself there you ugly wart infested beast. You're slipping; to allow my three turn record to demolish yours like last turn.... -- Tankesh Golden Glow -- I like collecting ednolb tufts from cifiroloc warriors. -- Donald Windchaser -- Aries is Greek for Ram. Sounds "Bullish" enough I suppose for one of Kennelworth's. -- Adie The Scribe -- I posted a story last turn, so I got you covered there. I'll be posting a lot of stories these days...OLD stories, plus maybe small new snippets, or continuations. We'll see. -- Adie Jon Fleet -- Speed isn't everything obviously, you need to improve your attack. -- Elinae Windchaser -- I was hoping to learn more. Good fight. -- Kiri Rayek -- Ah, crap! I did it again! I am just WAY too aggressive, and my aim sucks! I tried not to hit you in tender spots.... My deepest apologies to the Scarlet Knights. I am single handedly ruining the reputation of my manager(s). I'm sure Adie's friend Armalias is going to have a few things to say too.... -- Airk Koro Cloud -- After last turn, I had to come back for another since you were still ranked above me. My apologies. It was good, but I preferred last turn better, a much better fight and learning experience. -- Kaelen Son of Jerk -- What kind of name is Krej fo Nos anyway! :P~ -- Donald All -- I have been told that a warrior gets bonuses when training a new warrior in skills for their first 10 fights. Truth or lie? (QOW by a new manager) -- Micah Xavier, DM 93 P.S. Would you recommend new managers having teams in DM 11? All -- Forgive my lack of a DM column last turn. The writer was on vacation. -- J.J. Cooke Adie and Kennelworth -- Actually I brought it (the TC Invitational) up because I thought it would be fun to discuss the possible outcomes down at the Bulldog. My prediction: Belana over Intendrid in the final. That fight would easily go five or more minutes. You have to admit, it would be fun to see. -- Generalissimo Puerco Congratulations to Tuft Tuggers for pulling me out of the top team spot after numerous rounds at the top. Salute. -- JGW Mino -- My apologies for not recognizing you in the 1000 wins and putting the congratulations to your Consortium mate Kennelworth. Great accomplishment. -- JGW Kennelworth -- Sympathy is for those who are weak and without conviction, so why do you feel sympathy? I had you pegged for strength and conviction! -- JGW PPE -- Good challenges by a worthy adversary. Impressive. -- JGW Tankesh -- I'm tired of sparring back and forth with you. Your standing up is admirable from my initial post entering this arena, but you are losing your mind. A good manager scouts an arena and gets a feel before entering to make sure the tide is right for what he wants to achieve. I doubt you take a war hammer and repetitively hit yourself in the head just to prove you can do it. A clever manager hand chooses his challenges and works within the context of the arena to ensure success. In short, you and I both work within the arena to our successes and we've both done well and both are to be held in esteem. I'm willing to admit that. The question is can you swallow your pride and admit an 'invader' is doing as well as you are, or are you so taken with rage that you cannot see past the tip of your nose? -- JGW P.S. SwineTiger is not 'in bed' with me. In fact he is more of a respectful manager I converse with. His ties to me are just conversations, and no allegiance to any given banner is shared. Lord Xiang -- I sure hope you come back in soon. I don't know if I can handle such Andorian insanity much longer without a calming influence. -- JGW Seraphim -- Nice to see you with new conscripts. Good luck on your use of overwhelming 'force'. -- JGW Violet Vulture -- Purple plumes? Gosh, I never expected them to look like THAT. I mean, on fans? That is so cool! Do you dance with them? -- Rockie Dee Elinae Silverbow -- Ma'am, accept my apologies! I leapt forward with harmful intent and then...I glimpsed your face. I was stunned. I cannot begin to tell you how your beauty and grace affected me. Please accept that gift of skills in slight repayment for my temerity and rude intent. -- Jon Fleet Kiri Dragonspear -- But, listen! I'm not a dragon, honest! Those are all down in Dal Shang or somewhere. I'm just a guy who happened to make an admiring remark with no disrespectful intent at ALL. -- Windchaser Kaelen Thunderheart -- What IS that, some kind of performance enhancing drug? I mean, *I* could hear your heart thundering, and then you rushed out and attacked like there was no tomorrow, and if I hadn't fallen down right away, there would NOT have been a tomorrow...for me. Ouch. -- Koro Cloud P.S. Do you ever get the impression that my manager isn't paying attention? Paladium Haze -- You know, I didn't expect it to be like this. -- Pony Airk -- (surprised look) I'm Aruaki. I'm from here. -- Koro Cloud Kaelen -- You figure beating me proves anything? -- Koro Cloud the very surprised Flea Bag -- My apologies. That really WAS a slip...to make amends, let all of Aruak City know, I utilize the Slashing attack. -- Velvet Finish To All Concerned -- Haunt, Ponly, Farshot, Barricade and Bull Market, my warriors salute you. Now, two simple questions: How strictly enforced IS the 100 word limit for my postings? And what does it mean when your gladiator is introduced as a "local?" -- Michael Eldritch P.S. Thank you Kennelworth and Adie for your advice. Unfortunately, the mysteries of the "Web" are beyond me, and I must rely on my trusty quill and parchment assessments. Also, it wasn't Hammurabi I spoke of. It was HANIBAL of Cannibalz. As to your first question, it's not enforced at all any more. *smile* Some managers would be hard pressed if it were! -- Ed. Q.O.W. -- What are the specific advantages/disadvantages of the different weapons (aside from the obvious bash, pierce, slash qualities)? For example, ability considerations aside, what would make me choose a greatsword over a Maul, or vice versa? -- Michael Eldritch Adie, Fandil -- Sorry not to have written a longer spotlight, but the family emergencies just keep emerging. More next time. -- the Scribe 11 August 2006 All -- I support Vendetta Cartel's observation of The Dark Knights! If war is declared on V.C. by The Dark Knights, then war is also declared on The Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire by The Avengers of Light! We have been quietly awaiting such a chance to expose ourselves (all interested parties contact me c/o The Barbarians: DM 31, Attn: Timothias)!
