And Belana Bladesinger, a rogue who dueled her way to become the first Tournament Champion of my team. The following is the story of a threat that emerged in the early days of King Mikael, before the Andorian League became a Kingdom. There were forces in motion to destroy Sheila Greywand and usurp her power. Here we follow one thread of those activities, enveloping my gladiators, adventurers in their own right, and eventually myself in what was to be one of the first blows to Alastari. Andoria was one of the biggest obstacles to any successful attack on Ghea.... WHAT EVIL WE DO NOT KNOW PART I Aruak City. The Heart and Soul of Andoria. The largest of Andoria's cities, Aruak has always played center stage for the kingdoms. Whether as the capital of the league in years past, or as the center of scholarly and magical research in all of Alastari, Aruak has always set the pace for its clan holdings as well as all of Andoria. Aruak City is old. Within its sprawling network of cobbled streets, lined with ancient slate-roofed houses, lies a manicured landscape tailored over a period of four hundred years. The streets and alleys are wide, with parks and temples dotting the city. Within the ancient inner city walls, mostly torn down from lack of necessity, lies the wheelwork pattern of roads housing magnificent buildings, ranging from the theater, to the grand palace, to the sprawling temple complexes of Demnat. But as the heart and soul of the Andorian League, Aruak City also draws the deadliest fire from its enemies.... * * * The view was spectacular. The only building with a higher vantage point was the vaulted tower of Demnat. But access to that happened to be...hindered. The beast god would not allow his own entry into the holy temples. But no matter. The palace bell tower would do. Looking across the city, one could only admire the effort and the number of lives expended to develop such a horrendously beautiful and sprawling city as this over four hundred years. It was no wonder this city was once the home of the High King of Andoria, and if things went as planned, it would be again. But only to his highness' detriment. The palace servant stretched out and peered over the edge. The palace grounds sprawled out beneath him. To the west was the vacuous archival space of the Great Library. Beside that spread the multiplex buildings of the temple to Demnat, not to mention the other three temples dedicated to the beast god whose structures pierced the skyline. On the north stood the arena. Most of the secular sections of the city resided over there amongst the gladiators and managers. The servant's sharp eyes caught the sable field and rampant lion of the surcoat of a temple guard, the constables of the city. Hopefully that illusion of security would help to lure the Andorian King here. But enticing the King to leave Andor was up to the others. The final trap was all his. The servant came down out of the tower. His shift having ended, he worked his way though the palace grounds and headed north. Passing through the north gate-keep of the old city wall, the servant made his way to the site of the largest number of potential hazards to his plans...The Bulldog Inn. * * * Two Lord Protectors walked into the Bulldog Inn that evening. The air was dry and it augmented the incense and kitchen fragrances drifting aimlessly about the room. One, a black bearded dwarf, headed for the bar as the other, a young, lithe, human brunette paused by the Aruak City Hall of Fame trophy wall. She stood up next to the pictures on the wall and tapped one. "Hey, Torin. What do you think? Is this rendition of me a little too becoming?" The Lady Protector, known as Belana Bladesinger, looked her drawing over. The plaque read, 'Adept Tournament Champion of Aruak City'. Belana was of average height for a lady. But at 5'4" she was short for a gladiator. But like many gladiators, she was in excellent shape. A slender, beautiful, woman, she was not very tough, but her muscles were strong. She could best most men in an arm wrestling contest. Her long, curly, mahogany hair, and warm brown eyes did wonders to conceal the flagrant and energetic personality held within. Torin, the dwarf woodsman, a contradiction of terms, glanced over his shoulder to look over his companion, "Well lass, I reckon ya don't really have a problem with a pecture thaut shows off yer bosom. Sooo...no." Torin turned back around, "Hey, Kennelworth. Gev me soma yer finest, ol' friend." Kennelworth, owner and proprietor of the famous Bulldog inn, welcomed his guest with a smile, "It's good to have one of my best customers back in town." He grinned, "Not to mention a good friend." Torin adjusted the seat height for his small stature and climbed up. The dwarf beamed at the infamous barkeep, "I sure do mess thes place." He set his beaverskin hat down, the tail flopping over the edge of the bar, and adjusted his lumberjack coveralls. Kennelworth set an ale before the burly dwarf, "So, is Adie still 'enlarging' you so that your height qualifies for the commission?" "Yer not makin' fun o' me size now, are ya?" asked Torin as he knocked back the ale. The elder manager just smiled and served up another ale. "What about your inventions?" he added. "Oh, there coming along. I'll bring 'em by sometime." "So what brings you to town?" Belana hopped up on a stool, "Yeah, Torin. Why ARE we here?" "Well, besides the brew, Adie asked me if I'd like ta look ento some occurrences that Kennelworth's various sources turned up. She thought being immortal Protectors could keep us from serious permanent harm. So's I volunteered ya." "Geez. I'm overwhelmed with love and warm feelings from you," quipped Belana in as sarcastic a tone as she could muster. "Thanks. But what are we dealing with here?" Torin finished his mug in one downing, then took a deep breath...the foreboding kind. "Well, here's a hint. Adie gave me thes for us to study. She said she wasn't sure why she felt it necessary to give it to us. Some problem with divining. Anyway, I dunno how she gets such thengs...." Torin drew forth an ancient, dusty, leathery book from his sack. Belana and Kennelworth leaned over to read the title. Belana's eyes widened. She gasped and brought her hand to cover her mouth. Kennelworth turned the book to better focus on the archaic words scrawled on the cover: Agonar's Tome of Demonology Volume I Souls from the Void Kennelworth looked at the two, "You gonna need some help...?" PART II Now what's this? Something new, the servant thought. Lord Protectors here for a graduation ceremony would be common. But to have two randomly walk in...and look jittery? The palace servant crouched back deeper into the shadows of his corner table and turned an ear to listen. "Whoa, whoa, WHOA!" Belana jumped off her stool and stepped back raising a finger, "Wait a minute. We have to deal with DEMONS! Lord Protectors, and even chaos creatures, are one thing, but...," Torin opened the book, "YUCK!!" She leaned closer to look, "That...that's disgusting." "Belana," it was Kennelworth, "there's still the possibility that you'll encounter no demons at his place." "Wait, whose place?" "The wizard found dead on the beach. He was into demonology and conjurative magics. He has, or had, a place outside of town." "Yeah? And who do you think killed him, huh?" "Hey, lass. Calm down. Adie's getting more help as we speak." Torin motioned to his mug to have it filled, and Kennelworth gladly obliged. "We're just here because she wanted ta get the investigation goin'." The dwarf continued, "Besides, I dunna think we'll be checkin out the house." He turned to Kennelworth, "Yous mentioned it at the meeting of managers, an' everyone will be heading there. Actually, Adie, for some reason, suggested that we head into them woods if you dunna have anything else?" The barkeep nodded, "The other points of interest ARE being covered. You might as well look elsewhere for clues. And I'd trust in Adie's magic." Alara, a waitress in the Bulldog Inn, walked past one of her patrons in the corner and noticed his mug empty. She headed for the bar and quickly returned with a pitcher to refill his cup, only to find nothing but a copper jer-hawk and the mug. Alara looked to the door and saw nothing. He had just disappeared. Shrugging, the waitress went back to her duties and cleared off the table, never noticing the white smoke drifting past her feet. "But I remember from my gladiator days here in Aruak that the Hurinwood is haunted." Belana obviously didn't want any of this. "Dunna worry, lass. I know me way around the woods." "You do?" asked Belana, always skeptical of Torin's claim of woods skills. He was, after all, a dwarf. "Suren you trust me as much as me inventions." Belana narrowed her eyes at the dwarf, recounting his strange ideas for inventions. They all had worked however. "OK. As long as you've got it under control, I'm not worried." The Lady Protector headed for the door while Torin finished his drink. Kennelworth took the mug, "I didn't know you've been through those woods." "I havena. But dunna tell her that." "You always were mischievous," he said grinning. He turned serious, "Be careful." Torin slapped his hat on, pulled it tight, and fastened the strap. Placing a pair of jer-hawks on the counter, Torin winked at Kennelworth and headed after Belana. * * * Jharian Dellon, of the clan Dellon, High Champion of the Temple of Demnat, and Captain of the Aruak City guards, reached across his desk and snatched the list from his personal aide's hand. "Another ten people!?" "Yes sir, two families sir. Both live west of town on the farms behind the stables." "But we had doubled our night patrols." Jharian stood quickly, scanning over the list. "This situation has become intolerable. Has his Eminence mentioned anything about his attempts to divine the situation?" "No sir." "The farmers are frightened and restless because of the presence of slavers, and his Eminence has nothing to help?!" Jharian's temper was rising quickly. "You know sir that there's no proof that it's slavers." Jharian stormed past his aide and the man followed in suit. "People are disappearing. What more proof do you need?" The aide was practically running to keep up with his captain. "There are no signs of struggle or signs of passage sir. It appears as if they never existed." "All the more reason to gain Demnat's advice." His Eminence, the High Priest of Demnat, Orn Olharin, unclasped his brooch and hung his cloak and mantel in his armoire. The duties of the position were very numerous and demanding, but to give the people what they needed was worth the effort. Orn was looking forward to a bit of a rest after this morning's service when the steward entered the room. He bowed with reverence, "Your Eminence, Captain Jharian seeks an audience." Orn turned, about to respond, only to see Jharian striding through the door. "Please, feel free to enter." Orn said jauntily. He would normally berate any who sauntered in unannounced, but Jharian was one of his closest friends and was an exception to the rule. His expression changed when he saw the look on Jharian's face. The Captain of the guard turned to his aide, "Wait outside." Orn waved off his steward as well, before the man could speak out against the intrusion. Jharian was obviously upset over something as he waited and remained calm until the door was shut. Jharian stepped forward with the notice, "I apologize for the intrusion, but this is infuriating." He handed over the notice. Orn took it and quickly read over the contents. He crinkled it in his hand, "By Demnat. Ten more." He shook his head. "Have you learned anything, your Eminence?" "No. But this has to be more than just common slavers." The High Priest turned and paced the room, "My vision by Demnat is blocked on this matter, and my own magics in divining and scrying are being misguided." Orn took a deep breath, "We're going to have to resort to different methods of tracking this problem down. Your men won't find anything." Jharian, by this point, had calmed down. Seeing his Eminence react so quickly and decisively, and seeing him think it through, had a calming effect on the soul. His speech was smooth and steady, and his voice was never raised. Jharian waited patiently for Orn to finish. "Jharian, my friend. I want you to go to the Academy and gather some volunteer sorcerers. Make sure they're war wizards, their loyalty is assured. Keep this quiet." Orn switched his pace. "Assign one to each of your patrols tonight. You'll need them to track these 'slavers'." The High Priest turned and faced Jharian with a determined look, "To fight magic, one must wield magic." * * * The Tuft Tuggers guild house was getting quite full in Andorak, and this particular resident didn't like to draw attention to herself. Normally quite shy, she was more quiet than usual because of the obnoxious nature of a few of her team mates whose attention she did not want. Her voice was soft, almost a whisper, "Adie?" Alaina slowly peered around an open door, "Adie." She looked about the shrine she was peering into. Centered against the rear wall of the room was a large basin of water. Around that burned a multitude of lit candles on the surrounding dais. A large circular, stained glass window, centered with a golden disk with rays reaching out, sat above the basin. The window faced the east, and at this time of morning the sun shown down into the room, illuminating it in golden autumn colors. Adie stood before the basin, a halo of light about her, illuminating her hair and white gown into an aura of warmth. When Adie spoke, Alaina had to blink to bring herself back to reality. "I'm here Alaina." Adie brought her hands to her sides and turned around to face Alaina, "What can I do for you?" "I didn't mean to interrupt." "I was just relaxing. My prayers were finished at sunrise." Alaina smiled hesitantly. "Well, I heard about your call for assistance, and you've been busy with rituals. I was wondering what was going on. Maybe I could help you." Adie stepped down from the dais. "Come, we'll talk over breakfast." Adie, manager of the Tuft Tuggers and its off-shoot teams, was technically a chaos creature since she came to Ghea from another plane, or dimension, or... whatever. She was quite human though. Well, actually half-elven and half-human. About 5'5", Adie was of typical build for a woman who traveled worlds through adventure. Not very strong in appearance, her build was slight but well toned from foot travel. Her hair was a fiery orange auburn, and mid-back length. She wore it in a variety of fashions, all femininely elegant. Eyes of blue-violet complemented the fall colors she was fond of wearing. Lastly, she always wore her holy symbol, a gold disk with a sun burst pattern, for she was a priestess. Some people theorized her god was related to, or was, Ankor, the southern sky god. But the most noticeable aspect of her being was her incredible kindness. Adie turned from the stove she was now working over. "I hope you like southern cookin?" she said in her best terran 'southern' accent. "You mean from the Federation?" Alaina was thinking Alastari Adie couldn't help but smile, "No. Never mind." The priestess finished the ham and grits and served some up. "Adie, why don't you hire someone else to cook?" Alaina asked. "You seem to have an endless amount of money when you need it." "Is that how it appears?" asked Adie with a grin. She shrugged, "I just like to do it. Why, you don't like my cooking?" "No, its excellent. It's just time consuming." Adie shrugged again and sat down, "I guess it's like many things. 'Why do it yourself?'" she asked rhetorically, "People do things for various reasons. In this case, it brings me joy because, in the end, the experience is worth it." She gave a mischievous grin, "Besides, what does a Lady Protector have to worry about time for?" "But you're not even a gladiator, much less an LP." Adie smiled and shrugged nonchalantly. "Well, down to business." Settling into her chair, Adie nibbled on her food before continuing. "Normally, I attempt to leave the affairs of the people of Ghea in their own hands. It's a self imposed rule I use everywhere I travel. I don't want to accidentally alter destiny or history. The reason for my recent activities is this. I have to help my friends. It's in my nature to, and here in Alastari, as a manager of several teams, I've gained many good friends." Adie took a sip of her orange juice. "Usually I help them in minor ways. Funding, shelter, and even transportation, assuming that none of this affects the world balance. But things have changed a bit." Adie finished her orange juice. "Many strange happenings have hinted at a possibly large threat in Aruak. I attempted to divine the situation, but only received cryptic answers. But they led me to believe something big is in the wind. I could never forgive myself if I let my home arena city, and all of my friends who live there, get injured, or worse. So I'm going to help my warriors and others get to the bottom of this. I'll use my magic if I have to. I've just got a bad feeling about this and I'm not a pacifist." She took a deep breath, "Besides, I'm kind of realizing that this world has been, and is easily influenced by outsiders. I'm going to be one of them eventually." Alaina thought about everything that was said for a moment. "I understand. I'll help if I can. Aruak is home to me also." Adie nodded, "Torin and Belana are already on the case. They're pretty much working blindly. I'm hoping that my cryptic divination will lead them to more clues. They ARE going to turn something up, and your local lore of Aruak City could be quite useful. Thank you for the offer." A small, warm smile graced Alaina's kind face. * * * Belana wiggled under her pack, "I can't believe you got me to carry all this crap." She continued to shift under the bulky frame-pack that Torin built. "How the heck did you fit all this garbage on me?" "Just a little imagination, besides, you can never be over prepared, lass." Torin was scanning the edge of the woods. Morning dew dripped from the maple trees, but the grass at their feet also held it and had drenched their shoes during the long hike out here. Thankfully though, 'Torin's Instant Sealant', a concoction he brewed up, kept their feet dry. "That goo you put on our boots worked good," said Belana, thinking out loud. Brushing some of her curly brown hair from her face, she looked around. "So, this is the Hurinwood. Looks quite beautiful actually." Belana shouldered her pack again to get it snug. "Well, lead on." Torin glanced around, adjusted his beaver-skin hat, and picked a random entrance to the woods. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Out of the Past #24 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + "We have no time to waste standing here," Adie said. "We have work to do in Aruak City and elsewhere. Now." She stalked into the alley, the intensity of her purpose shimmering around her. The two men followed, Fandil hurrying to catch up with her in case any of the crazed Aruaki attacked, Cho keeping a watch behind them. Even so, they were no more than two yards apart at any time. When they were clear of the recent small battlefield, which now contained nothing but the dead and one half-changed Aruaki who was still attempting to claw himself and his surroundings, Fandil said, "You were explaining why Lady Sheila might have wanted this bloodlust to develop, Cho. Continue." Pausing only to search the dead mage for his magical tools and make sure they were smashed, the Adantri said, "Yes. First, as I said, she is old beyond any normal lifespan." Adie began assembling a fist-sized ball of solar fire. "The elves--" "The elves are not immortal," Cho said. "Yes, their lives are long, but three thousand years is old for even an elf, and Sheila is not an elf. Remember that. She is NOT an elf, and there is no reason to suppose that her natural lifespan would be anything like as long as she has already lived. Unless great care and forethought is taken long before the maximum natural age is reached, the personality becomes... aberrant. Values and priorities change. It is a normal part of aging, of course, but if not checked in those who extend their lifespans, it results in a personality that is not sane by the standards of ordinary people. It becomes a personality that sees ordinary people as 'lesser', as tools and resources rather than people with rights. I believe Sheila has reached this condition, maybe reached it long ago." They all paused as they came to an intersection. Adie peered in one direction, a miniature sun blazing in her fist. Fandil, magical staff at the ready, looked down the other side of the cross-street. Cho searched the shadows in the alley behind them. "Someone crossing farther down," Fandil reported. "We'd better wait till they're out of sight. Do you really believe Lady Sheila is insane, Cho? Simply because she's old?" "Sane, insane, not-sane, who can draw a line?" the Adantri said. "I believe that Sheila should be counted as not sane in a human sense, yes. Her age is only the first reason. There is the Grey Wand, also. The Grey Wand is not the source of her power, as both of you must know." "Gods, I hope it isn't!" Fandil said. "I've only been near it twice, but that's more than enough to know that it's... tainted." "Yes. The Grey Wand has great power, but it's a tool of Chaos. Much of Sheila's power goes to containing that of the wand and keeping it from wrecking havoc on Ghea. But being constantly near it is--" "Being near it is tainting HER, isn't it?" Adie said quietly. "Great magical instruments affect those who are in constant association with them, bending their bearers to the alignment of the device. It takes time, of course, but-- How long has she had the Grey Wand?" "No clear records remain," Cho said, "but--" "Move now," Fandil commanded. The three of them darted out and across the street, into another alley that seemed to be going in the right direction. "--But she's had it at least since the last Chaos War. Five hundred years." Adie winced. "Not good." "But she set up the arena system to develop warriors who could protect Alastari from another Chaos invasion," Fandil protested. "There are so many arguable points in that. Such as, can't the Gates just be closed? How is Alastari benefited by having thousands of its young adults--and older ones, sometimes--die in the arena? DO the arena warriors develop the skills needed to fight in the Gates? I could argue on the value of a quite different skill set, one putting value on teamwork, for instance." Adie, in the lead, held up her hand, and the others stopped. Gestures guided them to one side of the current alley, while she took the other. There was no obvious danger, just a muddy alley strewn with unidentifiable rubbish. Because of the angle at which the alley climbed the slope toward Point, and the height of the walls on either side, there was only a narrow bar of sunlight down the center. A bar of sunlight? Moved by the same realization, Fandil and Cho looked up. A strip of sky, veiled by light clouds, and no sun. The angle was wrong for sun to lie on the ground in this alley. Cho hissed and pointed up the alley to the next bend. "There is a Gate up there, and this light is coming through it." "I don't see the Gate," Adie muttered. "But I know the light is wrong." "The Gate itself is screened by an illusion," Fandil said. "Whoever is handling it got careless about the light." "But he need not be careless about other things," Adie finished. "We may already be observed, and if we move closer, we will definitely be observed." "And we can't go backward," Cho said. "There has been increasing activity on the street that crosses this alley behind us." Adie glanced up at the walls on either side. Mud-stained stonework, more than head-height in all places and much higher in some, but broken at the tops, cracked, leaning and bulging and generally looking unreliable. "Don't even think of climbing out," Fandil said. "Well, okay, maybe you could, but neither Cho nor I is of a wall-climbing age." "I haven't climbed a wall in fifty years," Cho agreed. "Climb or fight," Adie countered. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Aruak City: Well, that was unexpected. There are hordes of 'scum' out there for me to challenge and fight, and they must all be avoiding me, for here I am after fighting the Duelmaster (an unfavorable match) and winning! I wasn't expecting that, but I will take it! We shall see how long I can stay on top. The selection of challenges below me certainly looks excellent! A bit about me... let me see, I prefer to fight with the Aimed Blow style. Well, the newsletter says that, but do you know why? I am an elven spell archer. It takes brains to be a sorceress, and agility to be as good with a bow as I am. I have both. I like precision and accuracy, always taking the best shot. Hence, aimed blow came naturally to me. It is too bad magic and arrows are not allowed on the sands. Not here in Aruak, but elsewhere that I shall not disclose at this point, I own a tavern and inn called the Cloak and Dagger. Cliche, right? Wrong. If I am here next turn, I will tell you why. Duelmistress, Elinae Silverbow, Spellarcher SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. Say good-bye to TUFT TUGGERS, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the MILITANT LEGION stable. It was a tough week for NEVERWAKE, to drop 8 places in the rankings. Coming up with a solid 0-0-0 outing, FISH MONGERS III has advanced 4 places in the rankings. Advancing in the rankings was MILITANT LEGION who went from last turn's 10-4-2, to this week's record of 14-4-2. Drawing on all of hers experience as a 9-6-0 warrior, MAGENTA MAGGOT went for the Duelmastership against ELINAE SILVERBOW this week. Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was ANIMAL FARM's MAGENTA MAGGOT, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by ELINAE SILVERBOW. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff? Here is other news that is of note. Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad JGW EXPIRATION? Big bad JGW EXPIRATION. Big bad JGW EXPIRATION. ARUAK CITY's afraid of the big bad JGW EXPIRATION. Tra la la la la! For those of you who like math, try this one: JGW EXPIRATION + Weapons That go Boom = ANIMAL FARM + Avoid City. Well just about everybody wants a piece of WINDCHASER, who was this week's most challenged warrior. Was it guts or an overtaxed mental capacity that had SCARLET ROSE challenge up 26 points in the rankings to take on FIREBASE? Trading many whacks on the head and a loss for 3 recognition points, SCARLET ROSE shows that a gal doesn't have to be good to get places. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, SILVER LINING went after RICHARD HENDRIX, who was higher by 20 points. Well, when the dust settled, SILVER LINING overcame RICHARD HENDRIX. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! DAMASCUS defied all odds and slew SHEWISH GIANT in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as SHEWISH GIANT's meat is notoriously tough. Yes, and another newbie bites the dust as HARRY TOESTACK goes down under the sword of BLACK LION. Thanks to this, BLACK LION now has 20 recognition points. Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper time is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights. Its been fun, and I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos). Delia's Gone -- You are more enduring than I thought, you endearing Lady. -- Flea Bag Jeremiah Jay Cooke -- A salute to your fine win. -- Bull Horn Jean Felix -- I hope you don't think me a bully for that! Nor as a dog for winning either. (wink) -- Aries Windchaser -- You can call me Taurus if you wish, but the stars are really not aligned correctly for it. -- Aries THAT Hannibal! Too bad he couldn't have TC'd. He certainly had great people proxying him. -- Kennelworth Embezzling Scribe -- Thanks for being there. -- Golden Glow Ron Grizzard -- See. You should have spoken the truth. -- White Lie Airk? Airk? What kind of silly name is that? Orc? Or worse? -- Silver Lining Richard Hendrix -- It was a long hunt. Even better last turn! I have never seen a winning streak as great for the Tuft Tuggers as the last four turns. I don't know what he did, but he found recruits who were ready to take the Tuft Tuggers to a new level. -- Adie Q.O.W. -- For those interested, I thought I might, since my team has been on such a good roll, post all my warriors ability scores.... I wonder if there are any interesting patterns that Michael Eldritch might notice: ST: 7,8,8,9,12 CN: 9,10,12,13,13 SZ: 9,9,11,11,12 WT: 15,15,17,17,21 WL: 9,15,17,17,21 SP: 4,5,5,9,14 DF: 5,11,11,15,21 Any patterns? Low to moderate Strength, Constitution, and Size. Are these important? Strength in this case tends to match size, totaling around 20, which usually gives good damage. That can be important. Strength of 9 and 11 equals good weapon selection. Note the 8s are one train from 9. Constitution, is important for defensive warriors. I might have a few of those...but it's good for endurance too, which LUs, WSs and SLs need. BAs, PLs to a lesser extent. Size? Well, you get what you get, but my sizes look good enough for good damage and the ability to use two handed weapons (you need a 9 for that). But I like smaller ones because they are often highly skilled. Wit, higher is better! Fast learners make great warriors. Will, higher is better! Some styles that have low endurance burn can get away with lower endurance levels. Hmm, maybe that's why I have one 9 on the list. Speed, its main skill is decise. It is not important if wit and will are high enough, which also give decise at the higher end. I don't add to speed usually. Deftness. 11 is the breakpoint for skills and weapon use. It tends to suffer if it starts low and you need to put points in wit/will. What can I say, I'm at the extremes a bit there. ABs love DF, as do PRs. Hmm...do I have any of those styles? My Duelmaster is an AB, and usually I don't make them with less than 17.... I hope that is a bit informative...but not too much! Good luck everybody. -- Tankesh 13-2-2! Holy bejeezes! NEVER has the Tuft Tuggers (or any of Adie's teams, which are particularly few) done that great before. Well, it sure can't last, but I'm enjoying it! Except the kills that is, where'd those come from? Crap, those are our alliance mates warriors! Ok, who's killing.... <cracks his knuckles> -- Tankesh Tankesh -- I swear I didn't mean to. He was coming to kill me and I defended myself with poor aim. Tell Armalias to keep his warriors on a leash! -- Kaelen Tankesh -- Same here! -- Airk Pauly -- You are certainly welcome to stay awhile and join in our fabulous Aruaki Andorian culture. Please do so. -- Adie Windchaser -- I certainly know there is a big difference between a ram and a bull. But from the Bulldogs perspective, they are similarly related enough to utilize any terms that might reference them. They are both four legged, temperate climate, hooved herbivores that love to lock horns and charge. -- Adie Silver Lining -- POW! One more strike against Colorific and his ruffians! Another hit for Jeb! You didn't see me comin' did you, you cur?! -- Airk John Fleet -- The victory and battle were excellent. -- Kiri Armalias -- I am deeply sorry for Leetah's death. It was an unexpectedly hard and brutal fight. I am glad to have survived it myself, for your gladiators are too bloody. You need to change their ways if you will not be managing them directly, especially since you are part of the Cadre, an ANDORIAN alliance. -- Kaelen Treestump -- Sorry I didn't mention you in the column, but there wasn't much to say, it was a quick fight, and you probably won't reply anyway. -- Elinae Firewall -- Shucks, and I saw just warming up! -- Donald P.S. I'm thinking you'll be gnidiova me in the future. The Horde -- I'm really sorry that Culhan killed Shagrat. Especially since I'm not fighting Culhan since he's on his number for the next tourney. Hopefully there's no hard feelings. I honestly fought with a low KD and attacked the LL so I wouldn't get in this situation. Again, sorry about dodging the blood feud. -- Pauly Tangerine Toad -- Cool! I've got orange warts now, and they just totally clash with my hair. Which means, I have to change my hair color, which I just LOVE to do. There are so many possibilities.... -- Rockie Dee Kiri Dragonspear -- Some days, I'm just not up for teaching. Take it as it comes, child. -- Jon Fleet Designated Slacker -- May I call you Desi? You are beyond question one of the best students I've encountered, you bring out the best of my teaching ability. -- Windchaser Ron Steele -- A golem? Hmm, does that mean that "ron" is a kind of steel, just like "carbon" or "stainless"? -- Koro Cloud Grishnahk -- If you can't move faster than that, you'll end up as street pizza beneath my hooves. I wouldn't want that to happen. It makes the horses nervous anis prone to mess up the shoes. -- Pony P.S. Not to mention what a drag it becomes, cleaning up where they walk. I reply with steel and your women shall cry when they start the body count!!!!!!!!! Remember to sign your posts to whoever from the VC wrote that earlier Ad. -- Dark Knight Blackstorm 4 September 2006 Civil War/The Crusades The next edition of the Civil War series is to be held in Tobir, arena 14, beginning November 25th with a round where all participating managers must DA all 5 of their warriors; in addition all warriors must be prefixed with an A an F or a D in the following manner: A-Broke Stroker or (A) Broke Stroker. Names simply beginning with the letter of your federation will NOT count as properly prefixed! Existing teams are welcome but no warrior who survives the DA who had prior Fight Experience (arena or tourney) will be allowed to score or challenge into the contest teams. There will be an equal number of teams set up for each of the three factions (Andorian, Free Blades, and Delarquan) to create sides as equal as possible. This along with the DA round should set up pretty equal footing for all managers. After the DA there will be another round where you can either DA again or fight your new, or surviving, warriors so they will be set up to challenge an opponent beginning on round 1. So as a recap DA round, turn 0, then turn 1 it begins with the following rules: The Civil War to be held in arena 14. - The contest runs for 10-28 turns (barring ties). - No tourney participation allowed. Teams with warriors participating in any tournament are disqualified. - An even number of teams per faction worked out by the Faction Leaders. No later substitutions are allowed. - If a manager brings in a second team and challenges into the contest he is DQ'd and his side will fight one team short! - Three factions will be participating: Andorian, Delarquan, Free Blades - Everyone prefixes their warrior with A-, F-, or D- (No prefix = disqualification of the warrior) - Turn DA: (The DA Round) November 25, 2006. Every warrior must DA. (Warriors not DA'd on Turn 0 are disqualified) - Turn 0: December 9th, 2006. There will be no scoring this turn it is meant to allow for challenges on turn 1. - Turn 1+: Scoring as detailed below - Each team gets 1 point for defeating a warrior from an opposing team. - Fights against warriors on your team do not generate points in any situation. - The team with the most points each turn gets a Battle Point (if there is a tie for the most points then no Battle Points are accrued) - The first team to 10 Battle Points wins the war - Managers of teams on the winning side each receive a +1 bonus potion to be used on a warrior on their contest team. This must be applied within a month of the conclusion of the contest and the team must have been active on the last turn of the contest. Anyone wishing to participate, and feels they can probably stick around for the duration (don't want to handicap a side, of course unforeseeable events cannot be planned for), should either diplo me at THE DEATH SQUAD(63) in Tobir (arena 14) or place a personal ad in the arena. You may also contact me via the Duel2.com boards! Let me know which faction you would like to fight for! This contest is intended to be open to ALL managers wishing to pit themselves against each other to try and determine which faction has the best managers! -- Street Legal 14 September 2006 I am back in the arena and thinking back to those days in 1984 where I was a novice and clueless manager. Now, 22 years later it looks like I am an ancient and once again clueless manager. I am looking to recover some old warriors. Since none of them are Aimed Blows, they are no threat to win anything. I just want to see how they turned out.
