The attackers were pressing closer around Lord Protector Eclipse. A lot of them
weren't even trying to fight, they were just hemming him in with their bodies, trying
to bring him down under the weight of their flesh. Where were they all COMING from?
He swept the shadow of his dark shield across them, and they didn't flinch, didn't
even seem to notice. If he correctly understood the nature of the shield...and he
probably didn't, it was so new to him, but he had an idea that any normal person
would run from that shadow as from a nightmare. So did that mean these weren't
     Cut, stab, slash, cut, smash.
     They bled normally.
No, they bled like carcasses. He stared into the eyes of a man, or what looked
like a man, that threw himself, itself, onto his blade. There was no mind there, no
soul, no man at all. Just a body. He stabbed it to the heart and shoved it away
with a shudder. But every time one died, two more came forward to replace it.
Even the ones he'd killed were getting up and coming at him again. They were
even less efficient, but they were still coming and still coming. Stabbing killed
them, if they could be called "alive" to begin with, but it didn't stop them. He
began to hack off limbs. It was exhausting. He stamped on a bodiless hand that was
clutching his heel. He whirled in place, hacking and smashing and trampling. The
arena was not like this. He had known, intellectually, that fighting in the arena
wasn't the same as "everyday" combat, but neither was this, in a different way. Was
there no END to these bodies?

"They're cooking a spell," Fandil said. His words came between grunts of effort
as he slammed the end of his wizard's staff into one attacker after another.
"Yes," Cho agreed. His sword was moving constantly, but it was not flashing,
not now that it was bloody from tip to guard. "And every one of these...warm bodies
we kill adds to the power they can use." A pause while his blade swept another
blood-spilling arc across the front of the mass of attackers. "We could use this
power, too, if we could--"
"No! This power here is VILE," Adie said. "We shall not touch it. That would
be to stoop to the level of our enemies." Her beam of concentrated sunlight burned
across another rank of the attack; spilled blood boiled away in its wake.
Cho shook his head and muttered something in Adantri.
"Don't make me laugh, Cho!" Fandil gasped. "That was NOT a nice thing to say
about--" He paused while his staff shattered the skull of another attacker. "My
staff isn't going to take much more of this," he reported. "And we need to do
something about that spell, whatever it--"
"Some kind of killing blast," Cho said.
"I'll show them 'deadly blasts'," Adie growled, gathering more sunlight into her
grip. Filtered or not, it was power, and clean power. And if she could hold
together enough of it, she could burn through whatever filter the Kraelians had put
over it. With the full power of the sunlight to wield, her enemies would find
themselves in a hard place.
Fandil was muttering an incantation, trying to match the rhythm of the words to
the spinning and thrusting of his staff. Even in the current weakened state, it
should be possible to fashion a shield from the Arcanum. Shielding was one of the
last magical functions to go.... But the battle was a distraction he didn't need
right not. And when he reached into the Arcanum, he found it...tainted. The blood
magic, he guessed, the whole Aruaki region must be contaminated with it by now. He
wondered in passing whether Cho had been right, whether Sheila Greywand had planned
the arena system to give her access to blood-power when there was no other source she
could tap. Not that it mattered right this minute....
The Arcanum was sluggish as well as weak and smudged. The shield was forming so
slowly. Too slowly. The attackers began to collapse without being touched, which
must be signaling the launching of the spell; they were giving their lives to fuse
it. Fandil groped for more power.
And felt Adie's gathered sunlight pouring into him like hot iron into a mold.
The shield snapped into shape and position.
Something struck, barely visible, a mass of dark, writhing energies that pressed
downward like the weight of the world. Fandil staggered, then steadied, braced by
Adie's strength added to his own.
And the attackers kept coming. Only stumbling and shambling forward, now, but
still coming. The shield didn't stop THEM, they were physical, not magical. And
they could flow over the three magicians like a wave of flesh and bone, drowning
them, breaking the concentration that kept the spell shield in place. Adie and
Fandil were aware of that approach but could do nothing without dissolving the
shield. Cho hacked at the zombies like a madman, but he was only one man and one

Eclipse staggered and almost fell when the pressure of the attack against him
suddenly fell away. He leaned against a bit of broken wall, when had he reached the
wall? and blinked sweat from his eyes. A lot of the zombies were simply collapsing.
Falling to the ground, falling into rapid decay, into noisome pools. But some were
turning and moving toward the other center of battle. Enough zombies to overwhelm
that small group. He shook off the blurring of fatigue. An enemy of my enemy might
be a friend, right?
He hefted his shield of shadows and headed their way.

The shield wouldn't hold much longer. Fandil found it hard to believe the
amount of power the Kraelians had assembled in these days of a weakened Arcanum. But
they were using blood magic, and probably even darker sources. And they didn't care
how many of their supporting sorcerers they burned out in the effort. And he and
Adie would burn out eventually, even if Cho left off the physical defense to aid
What was Cho doing? Fighting, yes, that was obvious, but the old Adantri was
shouting, as well. Not spells, they sounded more like curses. Serious, "I really
mean it" curses. Cho was beginning to sound, in fact, like a man in the process of
losing his temper. NOT a good thing for a magician to do.
The dark weight of the spell pressed down on the shield and then...wavered. A
different darkness edged against it. A cleaner darkness, the passionless calm of a
winter night. Where it touched the black fury of the Kraelian spell, that spell
began to fade. As though it was a wineskin that had sprung a leak.
At the same moment, Cho lost his temper completely and roared out something that
shattered the stones heaped around the plaza. Lifting them into the air in a stone-
fanged whirlwind that sailed across the open ground toward the Kraelian mages.
Too many powers collided over the plaza. Brightness of the sun, darkness of an
eclipse. Howling winds and flying debris. Earthquake and a roaring of disturbed
Fandil felt his shield collapse inward toward his staff like an umbrella
closing, but he could tell that the spell he'd raised it against was gone. There
were other problems, of course, there were always other problems. He caught Adie's
arm as she stumbled and nearly fell; Cho had her on the other side. They turned
together and looked up-slope toward Point.
The gladiator they had seen before was standing there, staring past them. "Some
kind of dike broke," he said, "and there's water, a lot of water, pouring into the
lower part of this town."
"Good! Let's get higher up and away from it," Fandil answered.

"Good gad," Senator Sedalia muttered, panting along in Stepharoo's wake, "the
wench is tireless!"
"I have an elixir--" Old Doc Circ began.
"No! I don't need your potions, you quack!" More quietly, he added, "It's only
two miles. Less than that, we must have come half way already." He looked ahead,
where Stepharoo and Gissanniah were vanishing over the crest of the peninsula. "And
the rest of it will be downhill."
"Unless you're going to roll down the hill," Circ pointed out, "it won't be any
Sedalia scowled at him. The old alchemist seemed disgustingly spry, and
continuing the argument would take too much breath. He and Circ were almost at the
top themselves, and it would be an obvious move to stop there and survey the
situation. Any minute now.

The two veterans stopped side by side and looked down on the town of Point.
"Not one of Point's better days," Old Doc Circ murmured.
An explosion over the nearer edge of Krael shook the air and the land, and dust
blasted upward in a fountain.
"Not one of Krael's better days, either," Sedalia added, pointing into the
distance. "Parts of it are being flooded again!"
"Good! But where have Gissanniah and Stepharoo gone?" The alchemist fumbled in
the pockets of his robe. "I have a telescope here somewhere...."
Sedalia ignored him and scanned the town below. One part of it had burned a
year or so ago, he remembered hearing about that. What he hadn't heard was that the
burned buildings had been abandoned, no effort made to clean them up or clear the
sites for new building. The jumble of blackened walls and tumbled, half-burned beams
was depressing. All the outlying areas were depressing; the population, what
remained, had withdrawn to the core of the town around the empty arena and the mound
of the Ogre's Tomb. A broad lane ran down from there toward Krael, or at least,
toward what had once been Point's harbor. People were gathering on that path,
holding weapons, and even from this distance, the senator could hear the mutter that
warned of a crowd fast becoming a mob. Stepharoo and Gissanniah had almost reached
the rear of the mob.
And in front of it, coming up from Krael, was a group of four people, with a
confused mass of Kraelians in pursuit.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

<sigh> I am not the social type. Yet I have been told my column last turn was not
sufficient. Chopstick Surgeon, unlucky match on your part. Kennelworth, thank you
for the drinks and praise. Is that enough?

Kiri, Duelmistress

No that is NOT enough! <Tankesh looks annoyed>. I did not work my butt off to get
my third parry lunge fighter graduated from this arena, BUT with a great record
unlike the other two, to let you not take advantage of the writing space to brag or
tell stories. To make a story short, she's kind of a 'barbarian' type. She's a
tribal elf pulled out of the wildlands, but she's not comfortable with city folk,
hence her quietness. Her family was slain by a dragon, but she regained the family
heirloom, a magical dragon slaying spear, when she slew the beast with it in battle
by sneaking into its lair and taking it up in arms to avenge her kin. Nuff said.
Ok, Kiri is a gifted parry-lunge warrior. No major weaknesses: 12-10-12-17-17-5-11,
good/good, hi/lo, sc, adex att/ini/par, ex def. Learns decently, but they're spread
around. She'll probably keep fighting on the isle (eventually) due to her talent,
but not at this moment. It's time to sacrifice to the RUGS!

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ARUAK CITY brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, GLEN PARK LODGE,
since COLORIFIC took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this
keeps up, GLEN PARK LODGE, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop
of 8 in the rankings? BULLDOGS turned their 3-1-0 turn into a 4th place rank in the
listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's
all watch GERFEL'S FRIENDS' heads swell from their 3-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha!
Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see
TWO-S0PEAR win a fight and gain 25 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, TWO-S0PEAR beat WHITE
LIE and WHITE LIE lost 25 points. You're breakin' my heart. Going for broke or
broken, our Duelmaster HIGH ELF Dark Arena Challenged this turn. And if variety is
the spice of life, ARUAK CITY may be getting bland, as KIRI DRAGONSPEAR stays top dog
in the city. The Victory Tavern, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries.
Where do they get this stuff? From ARUAK CITY's trash dumps?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. TUFT
TUGGERS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team.
Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass act of
cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was ANIMAL FARM. Ha ha ha ha! Ooh,
I'm frightfully impressed, WINDCHASER was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ARUAK CITY's
morgue. More variety. Whoa! I'll even buy KIRI DRAGONSPEAR a drink tonight!
Anyone who can come back from the Dark Arena, I want to be on hers good side!
COLORIFIC has cause to pause today, as SILVER LINING was sent to the Dark Arena, and
came back--though not in the best of moods, I'll wager. Titanium shields and bamboo
daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of ARUAK CITY. I feel much better now. I see the crowds are
getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens

Kiri Dragonspear -- Congratulations on your repeat title. Duelmistresses drink free
at The Bulldog Inn, as you well know. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor
P.S. Your DM column was exquisitely efficient!

Shucks, Wolfbrother, poor old Bull Market just didn't have a chance, did it? --

Tankesh -- Life is cool. Looking forward to The Face. Will I see yours? --

Lord Kronos -- You call me little mortal? Jeez, some folks don't even think there is
such a thing as me. But, I guess that is better than being dead undead like you? --

Pony -- Well, Wolfbrother wasn't buying! -- Bull Market (who's run is done)

Too-S0pear -- Wow! Was that any way to treat a nice little doggie? Don't you like
dogs? -- Man's Best Friend

Tuck -- That hurt! Please pick those fleas a little gentler next time. -- Flea Bag

Aries overpowered Veteran mercenary. Of course! -- Aries

Aries -- I see we have yet some to teach you about Health. Humility. Honor. --

Walked The Line -- We walked it and we walked it and I am not at all pleased to see
that you are still walking it. I feel deserted! -- Carmel Camel

Lord Kronos -- Let me assure you that it was all my pleasure. Lots of pleasure. I
do believe you nearly croaked! -- Tangerine Toad.

Kung-Fu Master? Beat me?! I really go feel like a tiny little maggot. -- Magenta

Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle o' rum. Ye hav yer Happy Holidays, landlubbers! -- Mino

Tankesh The Bearded Gremlin (or is that just dirt?) -- I do believe I see a 9-3 for
you. How nice. Going down hill, eh? I also see a Proud 9-3 for me. I like winnin'
and am willing to give you green Thumb to help you. I am a gentleman. -- Purple
People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager

Khalhums Dwarf -- Thanks for being there, loser. -- Yellow Streak and White Lie,
Proud Colorifics

Jumpin' -- What can I say? I'm good. -- Golden Glow, Proud Colorific

Bull Market was a mode Total Parry at 12(+1)-17(+1)-11-9(+2)-19(+2)-13-11(+2). He
learned stats in 8 of 13 tries. He was a "work in progress" wit the 4-7-0 in the
arena and 2-3-0 in tournaments. Despite all that, he will be missed. It is rumored
that with his death, the DOW dropped 1000 points. -- Kennelworth

You are done, Silver Lining. You are no Proud Colorific. Begone! You may have
thought your sleek 9(+1)- 11 15-16(+1)-17-4-15(+1) slasher figure would get you
somewhere, but you are wrong. Sure, you fooled me with that body (still looks fine!)
but your silly focus on initiative and your inability to understand decisiveness were
your pitfalls. Indeed, you stupid bimbo, learning only 31 skills in 22 tries, of
which only two were decise, places you in the low IQ status. You are simply not a
Proud Colorific. Begone, I say. -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager
(declaring Silver Lining to be purple and devouring it whole)

Kennelworth -- Spring water please. Thank you. -- Kiri (for those free drinks)

Kennelworth -- Are you asking Adie again for info related to the team I manage?! I
swear I'm going to rip your.... What are you, senile!? Are you purposely trying to
aggravate me? -- Tankesh

Kennelworth -- Danika has a lot of horsepower behind her weapon, though not quite as
much as we'd like. We're trying to upgrade her engine. <wink> -- Adie
P.S. Don't let Tankesh know I dropped into say hi and answer. I'm busy with Fandil
at the moment....

Yellow Streak -- You wanted me? Oh...sorry. -- Kiri

PPE -- You've been hogtied and cooked before, don't make me do it again, you ugly
beast you. -- Tankesh

Windchaser -- Me? A heart condition? <laughs> Funny. You do realize my name is a
metaphor and adjective, correct? My tribe call me 'thunderheart'. It carried over
to my adopted family. -- Kaelen

Koro Cloud -- Aw, shucks! Too dab all my weapons ekorb! -- Donald

Son of Jerk -- Hell yeah you are! -- Danika

Aries -- You only overpower when fights are thrown your way. I would have preferred
to drink your soul.... -- Lord Kronos

Koro Cloud -- <raised eyebrow> You spelled my name wrong, illiterate human. --

Windchaser -- Experience is key. As a long lived sorceress, I know. That is about
all the credit you deserve however. -- Fiona

Tangerine Toad -- <yawn> -- Lord Kronos

Delia's Gone -- I hope for another match like that! -- Special!

One-Eye -- Yes, I left you with one. Be grateful to have kept the other. -- Zyn'kyr

Osksi Noble -- I think my Automaton would perhaps say something to the effect of "eat
dirt", which is apt. Pathetic Delarquan.... -- Fiona

Bobo -- I guess you're on the right team. Anyway, I'm coming after you with Tuck
because he's the only one who needs any fights before the Face. He only needs one
more, so win or lose you're off the hook the last three turns. Hopefully I win.
Well, or at least not get killed, you are a hitman, after all. -- Pauly

All -- If I was a rich man, I would definitely fight full time in this arena, but I'm
already stretched thin going in Valamantis and Aradi, with Shadowspire arena 81 fast
approaching. I'm sure I'll be back, but thanks for sharing the sands with me. --
Pauly, mgr. The Red Hand

Kaelen Thuderheart -- Er...I don't know how to say this except just right out, but
there seems to be a feeling amongst leading cardiologists that a thunderous heartbeat
is a sign of trouble. -- Jon Fleet
P.S. What this note SAYS is "turbulent atmosphere, with possible electrical
discharges," but I don't see how that could really apply.

Fiona Starmantle -- You're a maniac? It doesn't show at all. Or does it refer to
that...well, it's a rather ODD hairdo that you've got. All those spiky bits. I
don't think it's really YOU. -- Windchaser

Gorin Rogad -- Well, that puts me in my place. How embarrassing. -- Pony
P.S. Wash your hands. They're all red.

Donald Dunsen -- Ah! Thanks. I was afraid I was going to get stuck with "Worst
Record at Graduation," assuming, of course, that I live that long. A win will help.
-- Koro Cloud

Big Ethel -- Dratted woman! I was just trying to do my JOB, you know, which is to
sting you on the, er, hip. Because you're as big as, er, it's a noticeably well-
shaped hip. Okay. Next time pass on the flyswatter. -- Horsefly

Aries the Ram -- (recoiling in horror) -- Windchaser

Ed. -- Well, you do need a big horse. -- Pony

As well as a very, very calm one. -- Ed.

Zyn'kyr -- Not, it is NOT unfortunate. I'm still using it. -- Koro Cloud

The Flying Peasant -- I know a guy with a catapult. I'd love to help you live up to
your name. -- Rosie Volkerding

All -- It is great to be here in Aruak City. When I was a kid, my Dad's uncle owned
the neighborhood tavern, a little place called Glen Park Lodge. My team here in your
fair city is a tribute to the colorful (and drunk) characters I recall from many
picnics, holiday parties, and sporting events. -- Indimar Fallon

Superficial Hitman -- Honey, you have got to last more than a minute if you want to
party with me. I guess your name should have warned me you were all show and no go.
-- Laverne

NEED A TURF WAR ALLIANCE?? Master Beru, Wretch, Reaper, and Xoan have come together
to form an Alliance for the TURF WAR in DM47 with no regards for experience in
competitions or even the game. If you want to enjoy the thrills of the competition,
we have space for up to three more managers. Contact Master Beru at
d_spinella@msn.com for more information or send a note to Master Beru at DM 29--Army
of Darkness. If you are interested, we need to move quickly, since the contest
starts in January and there are a few requirements to meet to participate. May your
blades find the chinks in your enemy's armor. -- Master Beru

6 December 2006

As an American I honor my cultural heritage by stealing any good idea. This idea was
originally proposed by Lord Xiang in November 2005. RSI will be opening the arena
(81) for teams willing to sign the following pledge:

* I pledge that I will not send warriors from this arena to a Tournament, nor will I
use a Tournament prize on a warrior from this arena.
* I pledge to run a full team when I run turns in this arena. If circumstances
preclude my running less than a full team I will notify the Player Committee.
* I agree to abide by the decisions of the Player Committee.
* I understand that any warrior that participates in a Tournament shall be sent to
the Dark Arena until they are dead.
* I understand that any warrior that receives a Tournament prize shall be send to
the Dark Arena until they are dead.

The following are the rules for joining this No-Tournament arena
1. No tournament play for warriors in this arena (Dead tournament or otherwise).
2. One team per manager.
3. Teams start with new rollup (or a zero fight equivalent team is transferred into
    this arena.)
4. No tourney prizes allowed to modify warriors in the arena.
5. Twenty teams required, per RSI.
6. Waivers are required to allow self-regulation on tourney ban, granting RSI
authority to Dark Arena any warrior that participates in a Tournament (until the
    warrior is dead).
7. Rotating council to enforce tourney ban and maintain arena integrity.

The main purpose of the Player Committee is to maintain fair play in the arena:
* Warriors that participate in Tournaments will be sent to the Dark Arena until they
are dead. This means that the Player Committee has the power to send another
player's warrior to the Dark Arena
* Managers that abuse the rules of the Arena may be banned/transferred from the

The player with the most votes overall will fill slot 5 and that term expires end of
November 2007.
The player with the second most votes overall will fill slot 4 and that term expires
end of September 2007.
The player with the third most votes overall will fill slot 3 and that term expires
end of November 2007.
The player with the fourth most votes overall will fill slot 2 and that term expires
end of May 2007.

During the month that the chairperson's term expires the Player Committee will select
one of the remaining 4 players to be the next chairperson. During the month that any
member's term expires the arena will vote for a different player to join the Players'

If you want to be a candidate for the player committee:
1. Post a message in the Duel2 Forum at
2. E-Mail Deke at DekeYoung@Comcast.NET
3. Send a Diplomatic Note to Doc LeGrand's Lab [ARENA 81]

There are 4 steps to joining this arena
1) Send in a new team rollup to RSI with the following pledge taped/stapled to the
rollup sheet, or transfer a ZERO FIGHT EQUIVALENT TEAM to Arena 81 and send RSI the
following form.

No-Tournament Arena (81)
* I pledge that I will not send warriors from this team to a Tournament, nor will I
use a Tournament prize on a warrior from this team.
* I pledge to run a full team when I run turns in this arena. If circumstances
preclude my running less than a full team I will notify the Player Committee.
* I agree to abide by the decisions of the Player Committee.

2) [Optional] post a message on the Duel 2 Forums in the Creating a No-Tournament
   Arena thread
3) [Optional] send an e-mail to DekeYoung@Comcast.NET with your team name
4) [Optional] Send a Diplomatic Note to Doc LeGrand's Lab in Arena 81 with your team
name and intent to join Arena 81 and abide by the Arena rules.

RSI will be processing overviews for this arena as soon as you send them into
The first turn will run in January 2007. This will be a normal speed arena.
While I am encouraging everyone to use TEAM MAINTENANCE it is not mandatory.
The intent is that players that run turns will run a full team. One warrior teams
are discouraged and will a topic for the Player Committee to resolve.
I also encourage players to join the Duel2 Yahoo Group for faster updates and
feedback. http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/duel/
