Sixty or so of the golem-Aruaki first. They might be able to use weapons, or not, depending on how much intelligence had been left to them, but they were a physical menace even so: sixty against three? He knew that many gladiators believed themselves invincible at any odds, and knew that was not true. They were going to need their magic to hold their own against the tide of bodies, and it might take all they could do with this depleted Arcanum to draw upon. And behind the golems were the mages. None of them major talents, as far as he could tell, but Cho had been right: destruction is the easiest kind of magic. He risked a sideways glance at Cho. The old Adantri had sheathed his sword and was holding his staff again, looking like the magician he could be when he put his mind to it. Thank the gods for that! The deadliest swordsman could not hold back this tide, but as a pair of magicians, aided by whatever strange power the gladiator Eclipse had, they could make a good try. "We've got to change the odds here," Eclipse said. He sounded calm. Facing death regularly in the arena could do that for you, sometimes. "The people of Point can't match the golems one on one, or even two on one, and they're just ordinary people; they can't do a thing against the mages." "All true," Cho said. "We need to kill as many golems as we can until the mages get in range, and then concentrate on fighting their spells, leaving the golems to others." "If we haven't killed enough of the golems by then, we'll be overrun," Fandil noted. "And if we use our greatest power against the golems, when the mages come up, we'll be too tired to match against them. A pretty puzzle, eh?" "There is enough life left in these golems that their death will release blood- power into the Arcanum," Cho said. "Tainted power," Fandil protested. "I'd use foul water to put out a fire, if that's what I had," Cho answered. Fandil didn't respond to that. He knew it was true, that they might have to use the blood-power when it came to it, but he didn't have to like it. Eclipse swept his shield-shadow across the front of the charging golems. They went down--didn't stay down, sure, but while they were on the ground, the ones behind them were stumbling and falling on top of them. It was a start. The Kraelian magicians were hanging back, out of reach of the shadow, though. Too bad. He would have liked to bring THEM down, even temporarily. Heck, he'd like to know what all he could DO with this shadow business. He had no training in it, he was a gladiator, not a magician. Ace of Shadows...what did it actually mean? He kept the shadow of his shield moving back and forth across the golems while he pondered that. Darkness, coolness. Negative emotions? What good would those things do here and now? Unreal appearances, forebodings? Hmm. "Hide in shadows." Concealment? Not now, their enemies wouldn't be tricked into thinking they were not here. Would they? Adie knew the moment when the mood of the crowd changed from hostile to helpful. It was still on the brink of being a bloodthirsty mob, but now it was one she could direct. Provided she and her companions could protect them from whatever the Kraelian mages had in store. "This way!" she called, waving them forward as she turned to look back down at Krael. At the wave of spell-bound Aruaki and others being driven ahead of the magicians. Her heart sank at the sight. Many people on both sides might die here, and most of them innocent of major wrong-doing. So be it. She could see no other way to deal with this. These magicians had too firm a hold on Krael and on their slaves. But it would not remain so. Krael would be destroyed again. And the grip of the Kraelians would be broken away from the Aruaki people. This was the first step on that road. "Sweep them back into Krael!" The people of Point poured past her with more enthusiasm than she had expected. Poured past, shoving and shouting. She struggled to keep her feet. A hand gripped her arm, steadying her. "They are angry, more angry right now than they are afraid," Senator Sedalia said. "Their anger has been growing for a long time, while they feared to act on it." "A lot of them will die," Adie said. "Everyone will die eventually," Old Doc Circ said from her other side. "It's the common lot of men, even, eventually, of Lord Protectors. But they will strike a blow first at those who have all but destroyed their town and their way of life. Who knows, with the information we have, and the knowledge you and your companions have, we may even sink Krael again and give Point back its port." "I know all that," Adie said crossly. "But I don't have to like it, even when it's necessary." She spotted a stone beside the road, part of a wall, it looked like, and climbed onto it to see farther. She stood on the lower edge of Point, what had once been its waterfront, and the slope of the land let her look down across all of Krael that lay inside Point's former harbor. More of the ancient city lay out of sight to the west, toward Iaye, and more, she was sure, was still drowned under the waters of the Trier. But she could see enough. A jumble of ruined buildings layered with slime, here and there the ribs of a sunken ship, and scattered areas that the Kraelians had been clearing of debris. Here the stump of a tower, there a plaza with a geometrically exact shape, somewhere else a roadway that connected one bit of neglected ruin with another. A pattern in it teased at her mind, but it was incomplete, and she couldn't guess what shape the final design would have. Only that it would be a design of power. Her hand went to her hair automatically, twisting a flame-colored lock, as she puzzled over it. This was a measure of Khaldren's confidence and ambition, that he would try to make all the ruined city into some kind of spell-sigil; it was at least a mile across, maybe more. It had to be stopped before he could charge it. Something so big...once it was powered, stopping it would be, not impossible, but nearly so, and as destructive as allowing it to go to completion. There must be a way. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Cities by the Shore #9 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Point: The battle was chaotic. Eclipse had no awareness of, no time to even wonder about, the course of the struggle as a whole. He ended up teamed with the old Adantri, Cho. The gladiator hadn't expected...what he got. Cho was old, and he was some kind of magician. But apparently there was a factual basis in the tales of all Adantri learning to use a sword as soon as they could lift one. The pair of them quickly developed a rhythm: a sweep of the shadow-shield brought down, temporarily, the mindless horde in front of them. The both men stepped forward to disable as many as they could. Back behind...Eclipse didn't know what, exactly, Cho was doing, but there was a shield of some kind that gave him time to prepare for another shadow sweep. The shadow business was turning out to be more tiring than Eclipse had expected. He'd thought at first it was the shield, but he had to put some of his own energy into it somehow. He was trying to focus his attention and strength as he did in an arena fight, but...dammit, there must be a better way! If, when, they got out of this alive, he was going to sit down with someone, some magician, who could give him a few pointers in using this Ace of Shadows stuff. Unless it all went away. That might be a good thing, in the long run. Just so it didn't go away in the next half hour! It was exhausting. His shield arm was as tired as his sword arm. Fights weren't supposed to go on this long. He knew how to conserve his endurance in a duel, but then, the other guy had the same problem. Here, when one opponent went down, another stepped forward fresh and ready to go. He tripped over a body, staggered, and collided with Cho. It was like being hit by lightning. Eclipse was sure that his hair stood on end and his eyes popped out on stalks. Well, maybe not the eyes, although they hurt as though they'd popped out and snapped back. Several times. The shadow-shield was suddenly a lead weight dragging at his arm. The shadow it cast was heavier, too, somehow; it fell on the zombies in front of them like, well, a pillar of lead toppling. Fandil lost track of his companions. Adie, he knew, was behind him somewhere, keeping the Pointers aimed at their common enemies from Krael rather than herself, himself, Cho, and the gladiator Eclipse. Cho and Eclipse were off to his left, on the other side of the river of zombies. Too strong a river to dam with the meager power currently available from Ghea's depleted Arcanum. All they could do was hope so that it could be turned aside or its force blunted before the entire town of Point was swept away. Where had all these zombies come from? Some, at least half, he could see were Aruaki who had been stripped of their ability to shape-change, frozen into a half-changed state that made them formidable...beasts. Human intelligence had mostly gone with the ability to change. He could not tell if they might ever be restored to normal. It seemed wrong to kill them as the dangerous beasts they now were, but the situation was kill-or-die. At least until he could reach the foul sorcerers behind them, who had twisted them, controlled them and drove them forward. There were people who deserved to die! He shouted spells in a voice of thunder, making them up as he went along, anything to wring a shred of effect from the power at hand. Heedless of the cost, he would be useless for a week, at best, but that was better than being dead. A presence at his shoulder, supporting him. A flood of honey-colored light. "Fandil! I don't know what to DO with this! Can you use it?" He dared not risk the time now to look at Lady Protector Stepharoo, vanished into an amber prison so long ago, but the power she was offering... "Yes!" Adie balanced on the low wall, her attention riveted on the action down-slope, between Point and Krael. She had gotten the people of Point headed in the right direction, with the help of Senator Sedalia from Iaye. But now-- She winced. The Pointers were cutting into the vanguard of the Kraelian slaves, but they were taking losses. "This was inevitable, lady," Sedalia murmured beside her. "As you know." "I know," Adie admitted. "I don't like it." She reached for the winter sunlight, gathering it into ball of power, grimaced as she gauged distances and resistances. "As matters stand," she said, "I'd do well to reach the first of the Kraelian sorcerers, and they've got shields up. I'd end by hitting our own forces. But there must be something I could...." She studied the scene, gaze ranging to either side of the battle. There! To the west, creeping under the bluff that had been Point Headland, movement where none should be. And no shields that she could sense. They were probably leaving off the shields in order to remain unseen. Ha! But she'd only get one chance to strike them, and then they WOULD put up shields. Have to make it count, then. She weighed the force vectors one more time and launched her bolt. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Cream. Cream. Cream. Yep, that is still me there at the top. But you all knew and expected that. After all, I fought a surgeon and you all know they lack deftness. (Thanks, Gerfel, for having the Surgeon there for me.) I am not saying much else. No, I am not going to reveal my secrets. I am just good. No I am not going to give you a few clues to my make up. Go get reborn; that may help. No, I am not going to talk about Health Humility Honor. Kennelworth does enough of that. I am simply going to revel in the delight that an arena like Aruak City knows enough to have its very best on top. Ta ta. Aries DMII SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, ARUAK CITY? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, COLORIFIC, since ORDO HERETICUS took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps up, KRILL CAVALRY, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 5 in the rankings? VOLTRON turned their 3-2-0 turn into a 5th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch GERFEL'S FRIENDS' heads swell from their 4-1-1 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see ONE-EYE win a fight and gain 24 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, WHITE LIE beat AIRK ARCSTONE and AIRK ARCSTONE lost 23 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, ARUAK CITY may be getting bland, as ARIES stays top dog in the city. The Victory Tavern, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From ARUAK CITY's trash dumps? He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. TUFT TUGGERS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like BULLDOGS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, BLUE LION was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to KAELEN THUNDERHEART of TUFT TUGGERS for challenging up by 22 to BULL HORN. KAELEN THUNDERHEART won to get 102 points of recognition. Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's see if anyone's dead or dying. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... FIREBASE, a glorious 5-4-2 fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad MILITANT LEGION. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah!
