Point:

Lord Jerrofil, whose manor was near Point, supplied the horses and--he insisted
on it--an armed escort. "The roads aren't safe," he said. "There's been a lot of
banditry, random violence," he sighed, "and beggars everywhere. I can't remember a
time like this, not here. Down south, during and right after the Rirorni War, but
not here."
"We aren't helpless," Adie told him sharply.
"I'm sure you're not," Jerrofil agreed, "but unless you want to exhaust
yourselves by fighting hourly, you will accept the escort, my lady. Then you might
not have to fight at all; few of the bandits are so desperate--yet--that they will
attack a party of armed men. Also, well, you might need a guide. The earth tremors
have disrupted the roads, and some areas are impassable now."
Fandil raised an eyebrow. "I hadn't realized the tremors were so severe, away
from Krael. The ones three days ago--"
"Were not the only ones, or the worst ones," Jerrofil said. "Things have been
especially bad around Seam, but according to the latest news from travelers, anywhere
within sixty miles of Point and Krael has been hit to some degree. Some buildings
have fallen or are no longer stable, trees have come down here and there, at least
one stream has changed course, but the worst are the bridges. Most of them are
fallen or unsafe."
Adie frowned, one hand going automatically to twist a lock of hair. It was
perhaps forty miles from Point to Aruak City, a day's ride if they met no problems...
though it was well into the morning, and she had hoped for an early start. But it
was beginning to sound like "forty miles over good roads" was too optimistic. Her
mouth set in a stubborn line. If anyone... such as Khaldren, thought such obstacles
would turn her aside, that person was in error. But maybe it would be better if old
Fandil didn't have to undertake what sounded like a wearing journey, and besides,
someone should keep an eye on Cho. She turned to Fandil.
"Don't even think it," the Ardiventi mage said. "I'm coming with you."
Adie looked at him for a minute, then shook her head. Not in denial, but she
knew an immovable object when she saw one. Fandil was coming. So be it.
"And best if we get moving quickly," the old man went on. "We've got a window
here where we can leave unobserved, we should take it."
     "How--?" Jerrofil began.
"Cho is creating a distraction. We don't figure it will hold the Kraelians's
attention for more than an hour, though, so...."
"Yes, of course. I commend you to my Captain of Horse, Tollisker," Lord
Jerrofil said, "and he to you. May you guard each other for safe journeying."
The captain, a young man who looked Convincian rather than Aruaki, nodded
soberly and signaled to his men, Five horsemen led the way out of Point, two fanned
out to the right and two to the left, and another five brought up the rear, Tollisker
riding with the two mages in the middle of the mounted group. "Have you a preferred
route, my lady and lord?"
"Whatever will get us there most quickly," Adie said.
Tollisker looked to the side, though she didn't think he was studying the
overgrown field. After a moment, he looked back and said, "We will begin by trying
the straight road, then, and diverge only when we must."

Cho had only promised Fandil an hour to get clear in, and he was glad of that.
The illusion he had created to distract the Kraelian mages was fighting his control
like a live thing, and he feared it might become one if he fed any more power into
it. That was the trouble with doing any kind of magic in an area where the lines
power and reality were so tangled together: you could never be sure what would
happen.
He forced his unreal leviathan back from the seawall that protected lower Krael
from the lake. Cursed his tendency to build in too much detail; it made the illusion
more convincing, but also gave it more reality from within, and this... thing he had
made was absorbing the chaotic energies around the drowned city and becoming more...
solid. But he was no apprentice to lose his grip on a spell, and he pinned it with
his will and began to dismantle the web of forces that sustained it.

They rode for an hour without problems, though less rapidly than Adie wished.
Tollisker held them to a steady pace, walk and trot and walk again. He said that
they could not count on finding remounts short of Aruak City, therefore they weren't
going to ride these horses into the ground, that the time gained at a gallop would be
lost when they were afoot. Adie acknowledged the sense of that, but she chaffed at
the delay.
Along the Point peninsula, through land which, Tollisker said, was all under the
wardenship of Lord Jerrofil. If so, it spoke well of Jerrofil's stewardship. There
were fields that had been abandoned, one saw them everywhere in recent years, but
fewer than she'd expected. Farmsteads and hamlets occupied and in good condition,
people who paused in their work to watch the troop pass and raised a hand in greeting
and salute to Jerrofil's banner.
"Things are better here than I expected," Fandil said quietly.
Tollisker shrugged. "Most of the people here are Convincian, not Aruaki. And
Point arena is closed. So we haven't been hit as hard as the Clanholds. It's bad
enough, though. You'll see, soon."
"See what?" Adie glanced around, looking for the unexpected or the out-of-
place. But it was much the same as they'd seen all the way from Point, fields and
patches of woods, a farmstead tucked under a hill. Watchers on the hilltops. More
hilltops than farther west, the land rose into a chain of rugged hills at the end of
peninsula, then would fall away into the river valley where Aruak City was located.
"Around the next hill," Tollisker said. He was tense, Adie saw, like a man who
is not only ready for trouble but actually expects it at any moment.
It made her tense, too, and she began gathering sunlight against... whatever
need might arise.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings Aruak,

I extend my respect and thanks to my fine opponent, Turquoise Tiger. Request a
rematch any time you wish it. My challenge this turn goes to Windchaser, who I am
0-1 against. If not I, then it would be nice to see one of Leeta's warriors occupy
this position next turn.

                                      SPY REPORT

Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for ARUAK CITY. I don't wanna hurt anybody's
feelings or anything, but VOLTRON really goofed with their 0-0-0. The guys at KRILL
CAVALRY like really pulled together to get a 4-1-1 this turn, moving up by 7. One
team deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 1 after going 3-1-0. Keep it up,
TUFT TUGGERS! MVP award for DAWNING DANIKA? TUFT TUGGERS' proud of her after
beating DELIA'S GONE and getting 20 points. Talk about yer big time losers! ONE-EYE
got smashed by HONOR, and lost 17 points! Like KRILL CAVALRY's WINDCHASER is
sweating since he got challenged by Duelmaster CHOPSTICK SURGEON! Boo, hoo!
WINDCHASER slew (slaught? slet?) CHOPSTICK SURGEON! Actually I never liked her
much. She just wanted to fight all the time. I hear the top team insists all their
warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of ORDO HERETICUS must be getting
lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't?
Is there some deep dark secret why COLORIFIC's been avoiding ORDO HERETICUS so much?
Or is it just that they're too scared? Like, is ONE-EYE popular, or what? He was
challenged the most in all of ARUAK CITY! He's got a 7-21-2, is that good? For
sure, I was holding my breath when I found out THRISS challenged KORO CLOUD. After
all, haven't DARKOVER II and KRILL CAVALRY had a long standing duel in ARUAK CITY?
It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but KORO CLOUD wants me to write about it
since he subdued THRISS. Satisfied?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All ARUAK CITY ever talks about is fighting!
Me, I'm more laid back. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. I had a fun
time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Koro Cloud -- Gotcha. I needed that for respect. (of myself) -- Magenta Maggot

Chopstick Surgeon -- Well fought. You deserved to retain the title. You caged me.
-- Turquoise Tiger

Champeen Chopstick! Agin! Aye. -- Mino

Tankesh -- Sissy?! Heh, heh. I just love it when you show your overt jealousy. It
wasn't you that went 4-0 last turn, was it? -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific
Manager

Airk -- Ignore me? You cannot. I am the one who floored you. (So did that pansy
Khalhum's Dwarf, by the way.) -- White Lie, Proud Colorific

Ian Marsh -- Consider yourself planted. Luckily, it was not for good. -- Green
Thumb, Proud Colorific

Tow-S0pear -- Luckily? I got a "W"; you got an "L". Ho, hum. -- Silver Lining,
Proud Colorific

One-Eye -- There was nothing surprising about that fight, was there? -- Golden glow,
Proud Colorific

10-1-1! Who slipped up on this team! Jerk! -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific

Congratulations to Duelmaster Chopstick Surgeon. DMs drink free at The Bulldog Inn
-- Kennelworth, Proprietor

Tankesh and Kendrick Stormblade -- Mino and I call him Kendrick. When you approach
my age, one cannot remember much more than two syllables. -- Kennelworth (a name with
too many syllables)

Arvin Larn -- How many scratches was that you made in eighteen minutes? Why, it is
despicable that you can go that long. (wink) -- Flea Bag

Sledge -- A pleasure meeting you. Is The Doc here to stay. I hope so. -- Chief
Sitting Bull
(Interpreted from -- How. Doc stayum? Kowabunga.)

Outhouse Commando -- I guess I wasn't yet ready to unleash my bite. -- Bark

Kennelworth -- Thank you for the welcome back. I am going to try and stay active
here and in Talcama as well. -- Doc Steele

Tankesh/Q.O.T.W -- How much would it take to get you to challenge my team with all
1/1/1 strats? -- Kendric (call me Ken or most anything else)

Kendric -- *smacks him upside the head* -- Dio Ridenow

Ordo Hereticus -- We deeply regret the death of your warrior last cycle and await
your BloodFued versus Benjamin. He will not be ducking your challenges. Tho I DO
expect him to try to win. -- Kendric

Ordo Hereticus -- Indeed, I deeply regret the final outcome of that match. I was NOT
trying to get the kill. Please allow me to extend my condolences to the kin and
friends of Velade. -- Benjamin

Green Thumb -- Poor weapon selection on my part contributed to the outcome, I fear,
tho I salute your stratefy..a first for me to experience. Perhaps another time. And
thanks for the learns. -- Ian Marsh

Haunt -- My thanks for a fine match my first cycle back in the arena. I could have
wiwhed you were a bit better teacher, but I'll take the win and be happy. Care to
join me for a drink at The Bulldog Inn? I'll even buy *grins* -- Margaret Alton

AruaK Managers -- You need more warriors active. I had to fight a commission warrior
this last cycle. I was REALLY hoping to test the mettle of REAL warriors. -- Honor

Commission -- PLEASE..more matches like THAT one. Cult Member was a FANTASTIC
instructor. I attack, one hit = 1 win and TWO Experts... can I challenge him again,
please please please???? -- Thriss

Maybe if you joined his Cult?

Donald Dunsen -- As purely as a matter of honor, Gullet must be avenged. Afterwards,
"you" can buy the first round at the Bearded Dwarf and we can forget this
misunderstanding. -- youseff

Special! -- Ya got something against us stunties, eh? Yer lucky I forgot me greaves.
All said and done, good bout there. -- Tobius

Flea Bag -- How about best two out of three, just so we can get this over with...then
first round's on me at the Bearded Dwarf. -- Arvin Larn

Benjamin -- You realize that I will be avenged. It is only a matter of honor,
nothing more... -- Ghost of Velade

Purple People Eater -- Refusing to stoop to such a level as your, I will refrein from
following in your footsteps. After all, if I were as depraved as the common street
thugs you employ, I too would enjoy debasin the honors and traditons of this fine
arena. I depart, leaving you this bit of advice, Exitus acta probat. -- Eisenhorn

Tankesh -- Being a follower of the law of Lord Murphy, I expect misunderstandings
such as what recently happened, to come round every now and again. Once the matter
of honor is resolved, I truly hope that much ale will be consumed together in her
name. Afterwards, we can start a petition to imporve the medical facilities. --
Eisenhorn
P.S. Or at least, get the commission to hire better staff...

Every time we get better staff in there, they start agitating for better
     equipment. Too expensive.

Magenta Maggot -- Sorry, kid, but I just can't stand to be near you. Makes me gag.
-- Koro Cloud

Dawning Danika -- You're too tall. Women should be short and cuddly. Someone's got
to whittle you down to a proper size. Not me, though. -- Horsefly

White Lie -- There's not a word of truth in that. -- Windchaser

Delia's Gone -- Well, it wasn't MY doing. She just went. -- Pony

Croi Makin -- I hope Nian der Thal comes along and whacks you on the head. -- Jon
Flute
P.S. Wash your hand.

Turquoise Tiger -- Because you're special, of course. -- Windchaser
