[Darkover II compound]

Kendric sat in the office set aside for him in the Darkover guildhouse in Aruak City,
elbows resting on the arms of his chair, his head lowered in thought and his large,
strong hands steepled in front of his face. His appeared to be focused on some far
distant point and his brow was furrowed. A mug of cider sat on his desk, apparently
untouched and the candle was burned well down, a puddle of wax having congealed
around the stand after overflowing it. A soft cough broke his reverie and he started
a bit, turning his head to see who had made the noise. "For pity's sake, Ben, make a
little noise next time you come in! I've got enough gray hairs without you scaring
the life out of me and adding a few more," he rumbled, his eyes twinkling a bit as he
raised a fist in a mock threatening gesture. "Dio would NOT be pleased if you scared
me right into a heart attack."
Chuckling softly and shaking his head, the earnest young man just shook his head
reprovingly. "I DID make some noise, Ken. I knocked on the door for about 3 minutes
before coming in. You were the one who sent for me. The message is ready, then?"
     "Aye, it's ready. Sorry I didn't hear you. I was...contemplating what we've
learned here and what rumors you've been able to track down. It's a curse of getting
old...you get lost in the dusty corridors of your own mind from time to time."
Rising, he stretched his immense frame, listening to a few joints creak a little and
then ran a hand through his shoulder length black hair, grimacing at the thought of
the new flecks of silver that were sure to be added to it soon enough. He took a
letter from the desk and handed it to his young warrior and then clapped a hand to
his shoulder. "Be careful, Benjamin. There is something vast and dark in this city.
I hope that by means of this message we might finally begin to get some solid
information on what has been going on, but I fear there may be those who would wish
us to remain in the dark on this. I know I asked you to take Callista with you, but
make sure both of you go armed...and be vigilant. Treat this as another match in the
arena. While you go in search of the Tuftuggers and their Manager, there may very
well be someone looking for YOU."
Taking the package and carefully stowing it in his vest, Benjamin grasped Kendric's
hand and squeezed it firmly, nodding. "We'll be careful, Sir. That much I promise
you. I hope to have a message for you when we return." Saying that, he turned and
left the office, a slight, red haired shadow trailing along behind him.

[streets of Aruak City]

The two figures hurried through the streets, one large and thick as an oak, the
other slim, seemingly whipcord and steel. The larger one led the way, seeming to
part the crowd as a mighty ship crashing through the waves, the smaller trailed just
behind, oozing the tension of a tightly wound spring as they made their way through
the late evening crowds. Reaching a corner, they stopped to check their back trail,
but saw no one. Continuing on, they reached a section where the crowds thinned and
the light was none to good. Sensing something, the smaller figure reached out a
delicate, fine boned hand to catch the arm of her larger companion. A soft voice
whispered through the darkening air. "Ben, someone's watching us."
"I know, Callie. They've been watching us for the last five blocks. I don't
feel any hostility, just... awareness of us. Let's move on, but at a more careful
pace." Reaching under his cloak, he laid a hand on the hilt of his scimitar,
prepared to draw it at a moment's notice. Moving on, they again reached a more well
lighted area and both gave a soft sigh of relief as they saw their destination not
far ahead and relaxed just the slightest bit. Without even looking around, Benjamin
strode out into the square, his long stride carrying him quickly towards a door on
the far side.
Suddenly, he heard a crisp soprano voice ring out, "DOWN!" just as something hit
the backs of his knees, causing him to fall to the ground. Rolling over as quickly
as he could, he rose to one knee, his scimitar sliding free of its sheath with a
steely rasp. He darted his gaze around the square, seeking the source of warning and
danger, but found nothing. The crowd milled around the booths, on the edge of
bolting in fear of a swordfight in the market. Seeing nothing, Benjamin reached down
to the small form that had crashed into his legs, helping her up. "Are you hurt,
Callie?" he asked anxiously, fearful that she may have been injured and thus falling
into him. Glaring up at him, the petite redhead took his hand and allowed him to
pull her up.
"Aside from having your great lump of a body fall on me because you were too
busy thinking of where you were GOING to be instead of where you were, I'm fine.
Didn't Kendric tell us to be careful? To pay attention?" Her voice never rose above
a conversational tone, but the razor sharp edge on her words should have cut him to
ribbons.
Feeling shamed at the outburst, he started to yell at her, barely getting his
mouth open to start, "Why you little..." when her small hand darted up, caught his
left ear and twisted it, using the pain to turn his head to a nearby signpost with a
dagger buried in it, still quivering. His voice trailed off as his mouth hung open,
then he dropped his eyes and swallowed the rest of his angry rebuttal. Shaking his
head, he was finally able to speak again in a subdued voice. "Seems I owe you my
life then, lass. Thank you for saving me from a much harsher lesson."
Taking a last, deep breath to calm herself, Callista shook herself and then
smiled, an impish, wicked smile. "Owe me your life, is it? We'll have to find out
how much that's worth now, won't we? But later. For now, let's get this little
adventure over so we can discuss your worth over a drink back at the House."
Shaking his head and chuckling, he bowed deeply to her and then motioned her to
take the lead. Giggling a bit, she led them to the door they had been aiming for.
Looking up, she saw the TuftTuggers emblem and name. Satisfied they were in the
right place, she reached up and swung the knocker, thumping it soundly. A doorman
answered and she handed him the letter. "A message for Tankesh, Manager of
Tuftuggers from Kendric Stormblade of Darkover II. He requests a response as soon as
possible, please."
The doorman looked uneasy as he took the message, looking around carefully
before replying. "I'm sorry. Master Tankesh is unavailable for a response at this
time. As soon as he can free up a moment, I'm sure he'll get back to your master."
With that, the doorman stepped back and shut the door firmly in their faces and they
heard the bar and bolts slide home. Turning her face up to Benjamin's, Callista
looked a bit lost. "NOW what do we do? That wasn't supposed to happen...."

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Special! Well, it was for me. And this time I managed to take the title
without killing, which is a relief.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ARUAK CITY games. Former top team ORDO HERETICUS was
unseated this week as BULLDOGS moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top spot with a
4-1-0 record for the round. There were bitter words at ORDO HERETICUS' guildhouse
after a 0-0-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 7th. Dark Arena
anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how
this week ANIMAL FARM went 3-0-0 to move up 5 in the rankings. Did only my eyes note
the 4-1-0 record which BULLDOGS managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such
a record will draw challengers! SHOTGUN GANDHI caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested STRIKE and was awarded 25 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, MAGENTA MAGGOT put down
FARSHOT, causing him to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. Who here was
not present for the title fight this week as MARGARET ALTON boldly challenged
WINDCHASER in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? Although MARGARET ALTON
made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious
WINDCHASER. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their
position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In ARUAK CITY "art" is a word that has
long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to beat
in ARUAK CITY these days is MANIACAL TUFTS. At least, most blades in town are
looking to avoid them. Apparently the stalwarts of BULLDOGS are catching the bulk of
jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty
fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. TWO-S0PEAR take warning!
You have more than a few enemies in ARUAK CITY. I cannot but express pride for the
fearlessness of CALLISTA ALTON who cast caution to the winds and challenged HORSEFLY,
a fighter 27 points higher. 1 points of newly earned recognition and a dose of my
admiration is what CALLISTA ALTON must now weigh against the defeat which resulted.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! This week marked the last days of FIREWALL who at
5-6-0 was dispatched to the Dark Arena by the command of MILITANT LEGION's demanding
management. Must the anguished spirit of CHOPSTICK SURGEON toss forever in the grave
unrevenged? Against the code, WINDCHASER has escaped his deed unpunished by GERFEL'S
FRIENDS! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets
enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in ARUAK CITY. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a
maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Windchaser, Lord Protector -- Congratulations on your ascension. Salute. --
Kennelworth

Congratulations, White Lie. Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. --
Kennelworth

Jon Flute -- You pounded me and oiled me so that I am just plain mellow. -- Leather
Hide

Darkover II -- We only avoid the best. A salute to you! -- Kennelworth

Venomous Concubine? Me. I thought I could handle more than one concubine! -- Man's
Best Friend (Tail, and whatever else, hanging in despair.)

Dirk -- That last turn ... you tire easily. Perhaps some Wheaties and a lot of
workouts? -- Flea Bag

Lustig Broklaw -- Me fight long. You suckem peace pipeem. -- Chief Sitting Bull

Benjamin -- My bite was worse than my ... Bark

Honor -- A salute to you. You are my better. -- Honor

White Lie, champeen?! Shiver me timbers! Ye done fine, Lie. Aye. -- Mino (siccing
his critters on White Lie)

Callista Alton -- See! I didn't smell as bad as you thought, did I? -- Saffron Skunk

Margaret Alston -- I am impressed. -- Turquoise Tiger (retired)

Tankesh gone?! (Sniffs around.) I thought Aruak City smelt better for some reason.
-- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager

Jumpin -- Thanks for being there for me. -- Golden Glow, Proud Colorific

Khalhum's Dwarf? He's the only one brave enough to fight me? Aruak City is filled
with puds! -- White Lie, Proud Colorific Duelmaster (Well, I SHOULD be!)

Coming after you, Windchaser. I am! -- White Lie

Windchaser -- <Furious> I was too focused on wanting to take from you that which is
most precious in life and failed to first strike a mighty blow as I have so often
done to you. And now you have escaped to the Isle. Your team mates may not be so
lucky... -- Morlin Soulslayer (aka. Special!)

Windchaser -- <rolls eyes> Pay no attention to that man with the bic'ed shiny bald
head. He gets... carried away sometimes. Over dramatic. Better than YOU being
carried away, is it not? <is that a genuine, or evil smile on her face...?> -- Fiona
Starmantle

     How about "genuinely evil"?

Animal Farm -- We will gladly take the rest of your 'critters' away. We will carry
their 'load' and you can find new sou... people to fill your ranks. Do not mind, we
will take good care of them. -- Fiona

Man's Best Friend -- No. But I can show you what is it to be a lady's best friend...
-- Fiona

Youseff -- Hello... <a come hither look>. Do not let the record fool you. As much
as I loathe fighting by hand, apparently I have some skill and it is not reflected in
my record. You have potential, but is it more than just potential to be a good
gladiator? -- Fiona

Thriss -- Fast? Perhaps. I tend to fight in an unorthodox manner. As I learn I'll
find out what's the best strategy for me. Hopefully I make it back from the
tournament. You seen Tankesh? -- Johnny

Honor -- Wuss? Not. We'll duel again, if as Johnny noted, the tourney is not 'bad'
to me. And as he said, we're looking for Tankesh. -- Danika

ARUAK CITY -- I'm taking over our team for the time being, we may be inactive this
turn. We'll see. We have yet to find our management. We know Adie is out, but
we've begun a search for Tankesh. He'd never just leave the team like that... --
Kaelen

Kennelworth -- I have quite a gap to close in the win/loss column, so I need all the
Farshot v Golden Glow type match ups I can get. Of course now he is ranked way too
high for his skill level, but that is the price you pay for upchallenging. -- Doc
Steele

Kennelworth -- The RUGS do seem particularly cruel here. But after 24 years I have
learned a bit of game patience. We'll see what I can grind out. -- Doc Steele

Kendric -- My apologies for missing last turn after the kill, I was being held out
for tournament timing purposes. We accept death as quickly as we give it here at the
Neverwake guild house. Feel free to bloodfeud, hold a grudge, or otherwise seek to
teach us the error of our ways at your convenience. While Doc Steele is having us
honor the upchallenge and avoid traditions of Aruak City, he still expects us to kill
our opponents as often as the Arena Master allows it. Frankly, I am a bit frustrated
that you would even whine a little bit about a death on your challenge. -- Sledge

Bark -- That was a close bout. I guess I'll have to work on my conditioning a bit
more to have a better chance next time. -- Benjamin

Maxim Sorel -- Benjamin was right. You ARE a crummy teacher, tho I will give you
credit for being able to take a blow. One or two more and the fight would have been
mine. Until next time. -- Thriss

Saffron Skunk -- Wow. Color me impressed *giggles* Sorry, couldn't resist the play
on words. A shame my debut was such a stinker. -- Callista Alton

Flea Bag -- You can certainly take a hit. Or four. You know, if you take a bath
once in a while, you can lose those fleas...then you might have a future as an
instructor. My thanks for the fine learns. -- Honor

Turquoise Tiger -- That was certainly a workout you gave me. I consider myself
fortunate to have pulled off the win, even if it did put a damper on your last outing
here in Aruak City. Thanks for the learns and good luck on the Isle. -- Margaret
Alton

Bulldogs -- Hmm. Was making us most avoided last turn supposed to be a clue that you
were going to challenge us a lot THIS turn? -- Kendric

Neverwake/Sledge -- Do you fear reprisal so badly that you had to duck us this last
turn? Be warned...if you hide for the remainder of the Bloodfued, we WILL come get
you on your return. -- Warriors of Darkover II

Dawning Danika -- Tankesh? No, I've not seen him. Heck, I've never even met him.
Tho I think Kendric wants to talk to him. -- Honor

Johnny Ash -- To echo Thriss, not only haven't I seen him, I've not met him either.
Hmm, this doesn't sound good. I'll let you know if I hear anything. -- Thriss

Tuft Tuggers -- We do not know where Tankesh is, but if there is anything we can do
to provide assistance, please feel free to ask. -- Kendric for Darkover II

Tuft Tuggers -- Thank you. Try Rattybl23@aol.com -- Dartor

Kennelworth -- We are getting might old, aren't we. -- Dartor

Windchaser -- Good job getting the throne. You do have some skill. -- Dartor

Which comes as a surprise to many.

Delia -- If that weapon didn't break I probably would've still lost but I would have
made it a closer match. -- Saraya

Two-S0pear -- I'm going to have to try some of those s0pears, they seem to be more
effective weapons than what I've got. -- Pony

Lon Braddock -- Darn it! We were perfectly matched! That fight could have gone
either way, which being so, it SHOULD have gone MY way. Drat. -- Horsefly

I don't believe this "Delarquan Spy" business. I think he's just a ruse. Someone
sent to distract us: we watch him, and the REAL spy is ferreting out all our secrets!
So I dealt shortly with him. Someone had to. -- Koro Cloud

Leather Hide -- That isn't enough armor, though. -- Jon Flute

Bark -- Well, I hope so, because otherwise you'll be buried under the boots thrown by
the neighbors around here! -- Jon Flute

The Bulldog Scribe -- So tell him to stand up already. -- Jon Flute

Morlin Soulslayer, aka Special! -- Third time's the charm. -- Windchaser

Adie -- There is no spotlight from me this time simply because I didn't have a chance
to get it written. There will be one next cycle (barring further problems). -- the
Scribe

All -- I've been...out of circulation for the last couple of months, and my lists

a manager name or alliance since the middle of February, let me know in the ads, via
diplo, or in an e-mail (Sue (at) solberg-mathews (dot) com). For that matter, if
you just want to make sure I've got things right, you can always do the same. -- The
