+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Chronicles of Andoria #10 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Following the defeated attempt by unknown forces to unleash a horde of demons into
the Palace in Aruak City, a number of questions arose. Was it an attempt to
assassinate King Mickeal, the new King of Andoria? Was it an attempt to destroy the
Aruaki King, or to usurp the power of the Priests of Demnat? Who was behind the
abominable plan? At this time, magic became unstable and tainted throughout Ghea.
The reasons would be learned later.
Forces were at work to destabilize Andoria during those times, and the King moved to
consolidate his power. He began issuing new proclamations from on high to the
dislike of the Andorian League's members. He disbanded the assassin's guild. He
took power from the local regimes and consolidated it under his authority, slowly
turning the League into a single Kingdom. Many approved of his moves, as he was not
eroding the rights of the citizens of Andoria, and in fact was codifying their
liberties at the expense of the local rulers' ability to curb them.
But some balked at his reforms. Some managers did not approve of his abolishing of
death in the Dark Arena, instead turning it into a path for poor gladiators to
'retire'. He sent an army to join the Karnhorns in battle against invaders from the
east across the sea. This displeased many, and later they would be proven right.
Some rulers were loath to give up their power, and one man in particular was sure
that Mickeal was some kind of imposter and usurper. Kyrican, Chancellor of the
Military Academy in Targirr, led the charge against King Mickeal's reforms.
Influenced by outside powers, later known to be manipulated by a powerful chaos being
the lady known as Raven, who had ties to the Folstrom, Kyrican led an insurrection.
He took over Aruak City with his army and challenged the King. It would later be
learned that it was Raven and her backers who were behind the attempted demon
invasion in the caverns beneath Aruak.
By the time Kyrican had made his move, King Mickeal had new trusted allies. Many of
them loyal Andorian gladiators and their managers, some of them very powerful.
To be continued...

Aruak City, the Bulldog Inn:
"Things are worse than they look," Kennelworth said. The old innkeeper rubbed
his forehead. "I don't know where to start in telling you--"
"Start with the plague," Fandil suggested. "We've heard that has reappeared."
Kennelworth shrugged. "Something LIKE the plague, but I'm not sure it's the
same."
"Unintended shape-change, with the Aruaki being unable to change back?" Adie
asked.
"That, yes, but that's the least of it. A lot of the people who change die
immediately, sometimes in the process of changing." He grimaced. "Very...
unpleasant to clean up after. The ones who survive either go on a bloody rampage--"
"Instinctively seeking the power of blood magic to restore themselves?" Fandil
theorized.
"How should I know? The ones that don't go all-out for blood fade away, wither,
as though they were aging fifty years in an hour, and they die of it. This is not a
good time to be Aruaki."
"And probably no better a time to be Narsh Utur, even though their origin is a
little different," Fandil said. "I wonder if it would help to know exactly what the
old magicians put into their spells when they were creating the Aruaki?"
"Maybe," Adie said, "but that's a project for a different year. It could take
months to find out, *IF* it is possible at this late date, and we have more urgent
problems."
"The alligators," Fandil said, nodding. "Is there any pattern to this version
of the plague? Does it hit only people who are already functional shapechangers?
People of a given clan, age, gender...?"
"The closer they are to an arena, the greater the risk," Kennelworth said. "But
everything's worse near the arena, and worst of all on or right after fight days.
Hatred expressed between Aruaki and non-Aruaki. Casual violence, and not just by,
well, thugs and the like. Last week I saw a woman, a genuine lady--I won't tell you
her name--kick a man in, ah, the lower body because he didn't get out of her way fast
enough. I've seen children pushed under carriage wheels to get them out of someone's
way. Nobody CARES about anything except themselves these days. If this is
Khaldren's doing, then the sooner we take him down, all the way down, the better.
Anything it takes to defeat him, I say we do it. Whatever the cost. Or there won't
be anything left here worth having."
Adie stood, eyes blazing and jaw set. "We have to go after Khaldren. Now."
"We're not ready, Adie," Fandil protested.
"If we follow Cho's advice and WAIT--" she spat the last word, "we'll waste our
energies fighting the damned alligators and have no strength LEFT when it comes time
to tackle Khaldren. If he ever decides it is time."
"Cho is honest," Fandil said, "and I know he's being straight with us in his
advice. It really would be a bad idea to ignore--"
"I'm tired of going around in circles, poking at the edges of the problem with a
long stick. I'm starting now, and I'm going to move fast and act with all my
strength, whether you will help me or not. This has got to stop!"
"I think you're making a mistake," Fandil said, "or at least taking bigger risks
than you realize. But if you're determined to do it, I'll help you any way I can."
"Good." She took a deep breath and sat down again. "I'm not going to take of
without a thought, you know. I realize we need a plan of some kind. BUT! We don't
need an elaborate, every I crossed and every T dotted plan. I say we start at the
arena here. Find, again, that device or talisman that collects the blood-power and
stores it and transmits it to Khaldren. Destroy it--cut its connections, drain it of
power, and destroy it, as a first step. Yes?" She looked at Fandil and Kennelworth.
Fandil exhaled noisily, stared at the ceiling for a moment, then looked back
down. "Okay."
"Better to do it now, before the fights, then," Kennelworth said.
Below Point or Krael:
This new tunnel had none of the polish of the ones they'd started with. It was
naked rock with exposed tool marks (though nothing crude), and it seemed to
Gissanniah that it was, in some way she couldn't define, more "dwarven." Okay, she
could define the low ceiling, but other than that... she could almost see the dwarves
working here. In fact, she could see them, shadowy ghosts moving about their ancient
business. How odd. Could they be ghosts? And if they were ghosts of the builders,
why should they be HERE? She wished Kegrald, the Khalhums Dwarf of Iaye who had
first told them about the tunnels, was here. Kegrald had said his grandfather (some
ancestor, she couldn't remember now if it was his father or his great-grandfather or
some other) had told about the building of these tunnels. Which must mean he hadn't
died here. But maybe some of the others had? It was not unknown for powerful men to
kill the people who had prepared secret places, in order to keep the secrets. If
some of the dwarves had been killed to keep the secret of these tunnels--and others
had escaped in time to take it out into the world--then that must prove the tunnels
were important? At least, that they had been important once.
She bumped into Old Doc Circ and stopped, blushing a little. At least no one
would be able to see her blushes in this murky underground place! "What?"
"First power node," the alchemist said, steadying her with one hand and
gesturing upward with the other.
A sigil had been carved into the arched ceiling of the passage.
"Oh... good. That means we're on the right track, then? Do we destroy it now,
or what?"
"Or what, I believe," Senator Sedalia said. "How does this sound as a plan: We
will penetrate to the heart of this place, marking the nodes as we pass them. Devise
the destruction to work by a remote signal after we're out again--"
"GOOD idea!"
"But in any case, move quickly," the senator finished.
"Right." Circ removed his backpack and began to take out small bottles, half of
them round, the other half cubical. He passed the round ones to Gissanniah, the
square ones to Sedalia. "These potions are inert by themselves," he said. "Poured
together, one bottle of each, onto a double handful of lamb's wool," which he also
pulled from his pack, "they turn it into a clay-like mass that can be molded and
stuck to walls or ceilings. Ten minutes after mixing, the result becomes rather
drastically explosive and should be enough to muck up any magical sigils they're
stuck to."
Sedalia looked at one of the square bottles dubiously. "I'm not sure I like the
sound of this procedure."
"You'd be strange if you did," Cho answered. "But it'll work, and everything
else I can think of would take longer to set up." He unrolled the map and held it
against the wall so they could all see it. "We're here." He pointed to a node at
the edge of the pattern of tunnels. "This node over here is the central one.
Blowing it is necessary but not sufficient to destroy Krael again. For sufficiency,
for certainty, we need to take out at least three other nodes as well." He traced a
route with his finger. "We'll go in this way and come back out by the same path. I
know that isn't the wisest thing, but some the tunnels may be impassable. The ones
we've already been through, we know will be open."
"We aren't going to argue," Sedalia said. "Let's do it and get out."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hello Aruak City!
Running short on time as usual for ads, so I am going to make my ads the Dm column
for this turn. I have always tried to take the time to write a Dm column when
possible over the years. It is an honor to take the Throne, one should respect it
enough to say a few words. So without further ado, I'll peruse the ads and make a
few comments:
Kennelworth - I explained your congratulations to Onewolf and he seemed pleased.
Thanks. -- Doc Steele
Kaelen - It seemed like a good turn to come back in and have Onewolf reclaim the
Throne with a couple of TPs on top. I do not see Onewolf being out TPed anytime
soon. -- Doc Steele
Airk -- The tendency for tons of plate-con warriors in this arena is exactly why Doc
says I did not get DAed long ago. -- Farshot
Maxim -- I will answer for Sledge on this one since your threats were directed at my
whole stable. Bloodlust? I run 7, 6, and 5 KD and rotate all attack locations in
this or any arena. Perhaps it is not that I am unfamiliar with your traditions, but
then you are unfamiliar with me. 24 years ago when I started playing in Talcama, I
used to pull out the strategy sheets before I even read my fights and fill in a 10
for every minute for Kill Desire. When the game began you got 2 points for a win, 1
point for a loss, and 4 points for a kill. The spy reporters went out of their way
to praise the slayers. In short, it was a game about gladiators fighting in an
arena to the death. 24 years later my record in Talcama is 1037-938-126. That is
Bloodlust.
I have come to respect and even admire many of the managers here. I have learned
that up challenging with avoids is about as competitive as downchallenging and not
avoiding (my old ways), so I changed my style of play to honor Aruak City and her
managers. I am enjoying an old fashioned basic experience, where I allow warriors to
get political points and write personal ads. Hell, I am enjoying blowing up at you
right now. If another "invasion" were to happen tomorrow, I would stand with Aruak
City and drive off whoever showed up. Please let that be enough. I will never be
able to completely abandon my roots and run 1 KDs and attack the arm. I may be
slightly wiser and more tolerant after all these years of conflict in the game, but I
am still Doc Steele.
When I first came to this arena it is because I heard of managers that would threaten
and gang up on less experienced managers that did not honor your traditions. Perhaps
my unusually poor arena record here has misled you to think that I was one of those
sheep for you to slaughter? I do not know who ran the Purple People Eater team or
what happened to them, but I am willing to bet they did not have my experience,
skill, or tenacity. I assume this was Maxim of Ordo Hereticus that was speaking.
When I challenge your team I will be going back to the old days and using that 10
kill desire again. So gather your girlfriends together and let us all bath in our
own blood! -- Doc Steele of Neverwake and Wolfbrothers
Well that was fun. I hope this column makes it in on time. Should spark a little
conversation.
Doc Steele for Onewolf
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly ARUAK CITY games. There were bitter words at ORDO
HERETICUS' guildhouse after a 0-0-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into
12th. Dark Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the
corner! Witness how this week MILITANT LEGION went 2-1-0 to move up 7 in the
rankings. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0 record which LETHAL HERITAGE managed to
post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! FLEA BAG
caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested LORD
BENNETT and was awarded 21 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable
duels, PONY put down DIRK DARKBLADE, causing him to lose 16 points of recognition in
the process. As is fitting, the most sought after warrior on the challenge boards
this week was none other than Duelmaster ONEWOLF himself. Who here was not present
for the title fight this week as ROMMEL boldly challenged ONEWOLF in order to strive
for the Duelmasters honors? This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All
hail ROMMEL, Duelmaster of ARUAK CITY! Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly
6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city ARUAK CITY. ARUAK CITY, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of
thy guilds is BULLDOGS, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels.
Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part
of last week avoiding BULLDOGS. Indeed it was TUFT TUGGERS.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? I must report the passing of TWO-S0PEAR, veteran of many duels.
15-21-0 final record His was not illustrious--but death plays no favorites. Some say
a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in
hand then a sword on the belt!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in ARUAK CITY. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell,
and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Tuft Tuggers -- A salute to your 12-1-0! Well done. -- Kennelworth
Onewolf -- Congratulations again. Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. --
Kennelworth, Proprietor
Doc Steele -- You make an interesting proposal, but I am sorry, but my opinion is
that up is up is up to me. Only the Duelmaster is exempt. Good luck to you.
Health. Humility. Honor. -- Kennelworth
Youseff -- Yourself is fast becoming a Bulldog favorite! -- Flea Bag
Slag -- Join the party. Run my fine record to 0-6. Makes your life easy, eh? --

Kennelworth -- Thanks for the welcome! It IS good to be back, my friend. Even tho
Mino seems to want to take my team out single-handedly. *sigh* I'm ordering the
deep-fried frog legs, with a great big stein of your famous ale! And I'll buy a
round fo <cut off by Hal>
Kaelen -- Mighty kind of you. I hope I can stay around as well. It has been too
long, and I need to regain my previous place in the rankings. -- Lord Xiang
Doc Steel and Seraphim -- Huzzah! It is good to be here with other Delarquans. --
Lord Xiang, mgr Lethal Heritage
Soultaker -- My humorous friend, it will be good to banter with you again. -- Lord
Xiang
Jackhammer -- I consider myself lucky to have survived, never mind find myself
victorious. The learns on top of that just makes my whole week! -- Rommel
Dirk Darkblade -- Oiy. I hate when I get the jump, then lose the fight. All in one
minute, of course. I salute you. -- Pee-Wee Herman
Lon Braddock -- OUCH! That was slightly off-balanced. Need to renew the bribes at
the Commission. -- Yamamato
Wheat Wildebeast -- Okay, okay. I see EXACTLY where I went wrong with my strategy.
Let's try that again sometime soon. -- MacArthur
Dawning Danika -- You definitely deserved that one more than me. Oh, btw, NICE
learns. At least I got the booby-prize, tho. -- Patton
Two- Sopear -- The deck was kinda stacked on my side, nice try! -- Lord Bennett
Man's Best Friend -- Thought I had you there a few times, had you desperate a few
also, just couldn't put you away. Nice fight! -- Mr. B.
Bark -- I knew it, all bark and no bite, congrats on hangin' so long. -- Domingo
Pink Eye -- Looks more like blood red now, you really should get that looked at. --
Dayle Glassjaw
Selia -- Looked like a good fight there for a few seconds, congratulations on a fine
victory. -- Samantha
Kennelworth -- Howdy, old buddy, looks like we are hooking up in randoms just like in
years past, good luck to you my friend. -- Barnabas
Wow, the newsletter was a mess! -- Tuft Tuggers
Once a golem makes up its mind to do something one way, it's just about
impossible to change the said mind. We did try. -- Temp Ed.
Onewolf -- Congratulations on holding the throne. Drinks are free for the Duelmaster
at the Bulldog Inn. Although Doc Steele wrote your column for you, it's always good
to see somebody new writing the column. -- Tuft Tuggers
Doc Steele -- We're sure the Consortium will respond as well similarly, but yes, the
Duelmaster can challenge whomever they wish. It is an honor to receive the challenge
of the DM. Some though find it is the MOST honorable if a DM challenges the top of
the CCs. As for challenging up or down within the CCs, although we are somewhat
amenable to that idea because we have had our own difficulties challenging up when
our warriors are ranked at the top, not DCing even up there has always been the most
Andorian thing to do, and has been a part of Aruak culture for a LONG time. Plus,
allowing DCs in the CCs would add another small bit of 'exception' to DCing in
general that could be a bit more confusing to new managers or other non-Andorians.
Another way to supposedly tag us as 'hypocrits'. We already DC from the throne and
sometimes on bloodfeuds, we're inclined not to make another exception. -- Tuft
Tuggers
Kennelworth -- We hardly avoided you last turn, but we end up still avoiding you the
most. Interesting, people either must be lazy and not putting in their avoids, or
your gladiators just aren't feared anymore. -- Kaelen, for Tuft Tuggers
Jumpin' -- The win was nice. The learning was pathetic. -- Airk
Lustig Broclaw -- Nice try buddy. -- Johnny Ash
Venemous Concubine -- Reven had a lady before. People think I'm mid and dislike my
hceeps impediment. I like you. Nice and kinky! Want to do more naht fight? --
Donald Dunsen
Veteran Mercenary -- Veteran? Not from my vantage. How'd you survive so long? --
Kaelen
Patton -- I crushed you. -- Danika
Magenta Maggot -- We've had a great dearth of death recently, let's not spoil it by
talking up death. It's looking very Andorian around here despite so many Delarquans
in town. We like it. -- Kaelen for Tuft Tuggers
Master Darque -- Too bad it's just for timing. We'd love to have you stay more
often. Shame. -- Kaelen for Tuft Tuggers
Koro Cloud -- It is 'Black' Root, not dark root that causes heart problems. Not that
I have any problems. I think you just need to get the wax out of your ears, you're
hearing things, perhaps your own heartbeat. -- Kaelen
Arvin -- That was a good scrap, wasn't it. -- Johnny
Jackhammer -- You and I both. Broke both my weapons against Tobius. It was
infuriating having to rely on my delicate hands. The arenamaster was foolish enough
not to let me surrender. Physical combat definitely is too based on the fickle lady
luck. With magic, luck is not a factor, as the arenamaster found out. <cunning
smile> -- Fiona
The Venemous Concubine will not get her kicks with Donald Dunsen. I have added the
essence of her soul to our... 'collection'. -- Zyn'kyr
Koro Cloud -- Overmatched by experience. Figures. -- Fiona
What a fool! Morlin (Special!) got himself killed in the Dark Arena! Well, we
didn't get as much essence out of him as we would have gotten from Wurm Kin, but we
will take it. <devious gentle laugh> -- Fiona
Wow, I think that is the first 5-0 turn I have had in years. Hopefully that is a
sign of good fortune for me. -- Dartor
Tuggers -- Sorry I haven't emailed you yet. I have been busy lately. I will try to
soon. -- Dartor
Onewolf -- You are one dominating defensive. Congrats. -- Immortals
Doc Steele -- I know we have never spoken before, but I would like to say that your
presence here is appreciated by us here and we wish you a long and prosperous stay
here, from one ancient manger to another. -- Dartor, mgr Immortals
"The signal is given for the duel to begin." And a good thing, because we were
waiting poised on our toes to rush out and start flailing away, and there's just so
long you can poise on your toes before they start to cramp. -- Krill Cavalry
Maxim Sorel -- Not to sound rude or anything, but you'd make a great salad. Just the
tiniest dab of oil and a merest drop of vinegar. Delicious. -- Horsefly
P.S. That assuming one can't find a horse to bite.
Fiona Starmantle -- As maniacs go, you're quite a pleasing sight. -- Koro Cloud
P.S. So is the win!
P.P.S. I was going to say something else, but just in the time it took to move to a
new line, it slipped awa-- Ah! I note that, as usual, the arena clerks state that
we are both "local." Have you EVER seen them state that one duelist in a match is
from out of town? This business about being local is so unnecessary, because we
already KNEW that.
Blue Smash... that's a kind of blueberry punch, isn't it? Seems like it must be.
You certainly punched me! And smashed me, too. -- Pony
Chief Sitting Bull -- That you defeat me is not something that bothers me much,
everybody does that. But you could at least get UP to do it. -- Jon Flute
Samantha -- I am so envious of your height, I'm afraid it made me a little testier
than I might normally be. Of course, I'm not used to this gladiator stuff, and maybe
I'm always that testy. It's probably too early to tell. -- Selia Storm
P.S. A lot of maniacs around this town.
My, isn't it amazing what the golems will do when they get away from you? Lurking
control characters, even! -- Jorja
Tankesh -- The golems get in on it regardless. Very pushy, golems. -- the Scribe
