It was a bit stiff after a long night laid out upon a slab of rock, not to mention the bump on his head. But, he was still alive, always a good thing for adventurers, and he had a new mission. The sun was going to be up soon, and he wanted to disappear quick. He had a lot of questions about who was putting him up to this task, but they didn't have quick answers. Besides, he was tired of watching Aruak slowly descend into chaos under the polluting taint of blood magic. He may be Adie's team manager, but there was more to being a 'right hand man' than running a team. Besides, they were good enough now to run themselves. Breezing by the Bulldog Inn, he could see there was a party going on. Or at least, the tail end of an all-nighter. He stopped to look at the recent arena newsletter posted outside the door. "Damn, looks like I was only holding my team back." He stepped away and then spotted the Lirith Kai style red 'dress' woven with gold dragons that he'd missed for so long. "Is that Lord Xiang? That explains the party." He wanted to much to stop and greet him, perhaps have a drink... Tankesh was normally kind of flaky, but when he was serious about the things that mattered, he was a whole different person. Many enemies had learned that the hard way. He melted away into the morning shadows, mission on his mind. Slipping into the Tuft Tuggers guild house, he gathered his gear, and his long unused disguises, then made for the arena. It was a mess when he got there. The night fights were brutal, no longer the mandated release and fake 'death' that had once been decreed for Andorian arenas. It had been too cruel to kill people for not being skilled warriors, and the Dark Arena was merely a retirement tool. But not now. Tankesh took some time in a dark alley to put on his disguise. Andoria was in a period of relative chaos, with the Arcanum fairly unstable, blood magic seeping through the arena systems, and long dead foes reborn to wreck havoc across the lands. King Mickeal was hard pressed. It was about time he took up arms and did something. He went to find the registrar... but no one was there. Tankesh's brow furrowed. Something was amiss... Aruak, earlier that evening: As always the eroded fissures beneath Seam and Aruak were the preferred 'residence' of Fiona and her allies. Not that she preferred spending any time there. The heat and humidity were too much, and she was glad to leave. Caves were so unrefined. She navigated through the hidden entrance into the warehouse they rented as their daylight staging area. Exiting into the cool night air, she took a deep breath and savored the night and it's shadows. Clouds dappled the sky and the stars were bright. She wasn't looking forward to tonight. Her 'team', buried in the rosters at the arena (that wasn't cheap), scheduled all it's fights in the evening. Some of her allies were a bit shy of sunlight. But tonight was her night to fight, and ohhhh she so distained being a 'gladiator'. Her mind spit out the word. So crude, using a sword. But she had too. Luckily most of the idiots she fought didn't inflict any real wounds on her. It wouldn't do to have her nimble fingers mangled, incapable of weaving the strands of shadow she so favored in magic. She made her way to the arena to get ready for her fight. Surprisingly, Windchaser, a LONG time warrior from Leeta's team, intercepted her. "Good evening m'lady." "Hello," the elf maiden replied with a hint of interest. "You said once perhaps we could, meet sometime." He showed surprising courage for a male in the manner of his confidence and boldness Fiona thought, raising an eyebrow in surprise herself. Most men were quivering masses when they asked for her company. "Yes, yes I did," she smiled. His approach was unexpected. She eyed him curiously, having never put to much time in observing him in the arena. Windchaser was Aruaki, and he had not been afflicted by the blood lust and magical taint afflicting the city... yet. He could come in useful she thought. Fiona smiled with no small manner of coersion and made her plans. "I am about to," she rolled her eyes slightly, "fight. But I think we can arrange another meeting..." Fiona finished arming and armoring up, all the while thinking of how best to put Windchaser to use. She stepped onto the sands. Her opponent was Tobius. That was a preferable fight in her might, and she thought perhaps she could actually win that one, given enough time. The duel went as planned. She pleasantly, though disdainfully, began picking him apart slowly, and as many of his style, he didn't swing back. And then, both her swords broke. She shook her head disbelievingly and held out her hands in an "isn't that great, I guess I'm done" gesture. Fiona looked at the arenamaster, expecting him to end the fight. But he did nothing. "I'm done, I surrender," she called at him. There was no way she was going to 'punch' her way out of this. Her hands were prized to her as a sorceress. "Continue!" he called back. Fiona verbally spared briefly, insisting she was giving up, but he refused. She knew she had to fight, she would not be let out of the arena. Returning to her opponent, she painfully and very poorly flailed a few punches. She'd never learned to hit anybody in her life, ever! When the fight ended, with her bloody hands wounded by sharp hard armor and shields, she seethed with unrivaled anger. One glance at the arenamaster and anybody standing near her who caught the look knew her intent. The Arenamaster would be dead by the end of the night.... + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Cities by the Shore #17 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Aruak City: Kennelworth said that everyone going into the arena was watched these days, counted, identified, and he thought checked magically. Anyone who practiced magic was identified as such and barred from entry. Or most anyone; he figured the ones that were allowed in had come to some kind of understanding with Khaldren. Maybe not allies, but sworn not enemies, at least. But there was more than one entrance to the arena, even more than one obscure entrance. Adie knew that, and she was still surprised at the one Kennelworth found for them. The innkeeper had connections in unexpected places. They were in a wine merchant's cellar, their presence apparently known only to the mountainous Shew who moved barrels around. He moved one now, lifting it off a stand and rolling it to one side. There was nothing behind it but the wall of the cellar, made of old bricks. Beams framed panels of bricks and supported the ceiling. The Shew stood next to one of the posts, face to the wall, and did something that nobody could quite see. One section of bricks pivoted on its center and opened a narrow passage on either side. "You go in on this side," he said, pointing to the one on the right where they would be walking beside the outer face of the bricks. "If you were coming back this way, you'd go on the other. But you aren't. I daren't leave it open that long, and I've got other stuff to do, so when you're through, I'm going to close it and put the barrel back. You have to find your own way out." "Getting out should be easier," Fandil said. "People leaving the arena aren't watched as closely as those coming in, after all, they've already paid, so who cares?" Adie nodded. Getting out was not a problem for present worry. With a little luck, there would be nobody watching by the time they were ready to leave. "Where does this take us?" she asked, gesturing at the doorway. "Dark Arena level, behind the armory." "Okay. We're going in now. Close it behind us. And thanks." The Shew looked down at her. "Something's bad wrong," he said. "Fix it." *** ***** *** ***** *** Although the Aruak City arena didn't have the financial problems of some, which forced them to rent out space to all manner of productions when the gladiators weren't dueling, it was generally quiet between fight days. But not this quiet. It was like a tomb, and this was the night before the fights. There should be people at work, checking weapons, training, preparing the Infirmary for a new influx of patients. Even in this far corner of the structure, it should have been possible to hear something. Silence. Dead silence. Adie looked at Fandil, uneasy for reasons she could name and for others she couldn't. The old mage looked back at her, barely visible in the glow-worm light of the safety strips along the walls. He shrugged and gestured that they should go forward down this corridor. She took a deep breath and nodded. That's what they were here for, after all. The first step was hard, it was as though she was pushing against some soft resistance. She thought it might be her own reluctance, and the uncertainty born of the darkness and the silence. But it didn't get easier. The slight sound of her footsteps was swallowed without an echo. The resistance remained; it felt like they were pushing into hostile territory. She wished for more light, but they hadn't brought lanterns, hadn't expected to need them. And she did not want to make a magical light down here. As well blow trumpets and announce their presence. But she wished there was some sign of others down here. Fandil touched her arm and pointed at one of the doors along the corridor. It looked no different than the others to her, and she had no sense of something special behind it. But Fandil looked like a dog on point, a cat who's discovered a mousehole with a mouse in it. Adie stepped closer, almost on tiptoe, and ran her hands through the air an inch from the door's surface. Nothing. She glanced a question at her companion. He stepped up next to her. Immediately his hair stood on end, and even his beard bristled, as though from the effects of static electricity. He moved his hand toward the door's handle, and sparks flew between his fingers and the metal. Adie shook her head. She still felt, sensed, nothing at all, on a mundane or a magical level. But this door, whatever was behind it, had to be important. She made a shooing motion to get Fandil back from it. Since it was reacting to him, better that she should be the one to open it. He stepped to the side along the narrow corridor, and Adie put her hand on the cool metal of the latch. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. I must say, I never really expected my challenge to go through, never mind take the throne away from such a fearsome warrior as Onewolf. But here I am. And I feel that it is a great honor to address such warriors and managers as reside here in Aruak City. I also believe that it is past time that a warrior from Lethal Heritage takes the throne. I will endeavor to keep it, but knowing the caliber of the warriors arrayed against me, I shall not cry if I am defeated. Rommel First Duelmaster for Lethal Heritage in Aruak City SPY REPORT Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in ARUAK CITY. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! It was a tough week for ORDO HERETICUS, to drop 6 places in the rankings. Coming up with a solid 3-2-0 outing, MANIC MARVELS has advanced 4 places in the rankings. It looks like the guys(?) at NEVERWAKE had a good week as they went 3-1-1 to put them in 2nd place. I guess steroids help! Hey everybody, watch out for FARSHOT, who flew up 19 points in the rankings after mashing FLEA BAG like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was FLEA BAG, who dropped 11 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with FARSHOT. Drawing on all of his experience as a 23-8-1 warrior, MAN'S BEST FRIEND went for the Duelmastership against ROMMEL this week. It's a proud day for the BULLDOGS stable, as their warrior, MAN'S BEST FRIEND, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Here is other news that is of note. Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad LETHAL HERITAGE? Big bad LETHAL HERITAGE. Big bad LETHAL HERITAGE. ARUAK CITY's afraid of the big bad LETHAL HERITAGE. Tra la la la la! For those of you who like math, try this one: LETHAL HERITAGE + Weapons That go Boom = MANIC MARVELS + Avoid City. And who is this SELIA STORM you ask, with 42 points and a 4-0-2 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). BLACK LION defied all odds and slew SHEWISH GIANT in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as SHEWISH GIANT's meat is notoriously tough. For those of you who missed it, Death showed up, grabbed PATTON by the ear and took him away to a place where he won't need a coat. Yes, and another newbie bites the dust as DAYLE GLASSJAW goes down under the sword of WHEAT WILDEBEAST. Thanks to this, WHEAT WILDEBEAST now has 35 recognition points. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens. Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ARUAK CITY have no sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MAN'S BEST FRIEND 6694 24 8 1 111 BULLDOGS (157) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ZYN'KYR 6579 14 2 1 134 MANIACAL TUFTS (431) ONEWOLF 5505 26 4 0 130 WOLFBROTHERS (506) AIRK ARCSTONE 6778 14 8 2 117 TUFT TUGGERS (305) -KAELEN THUNDERHEART 6777 15 6 1 115 TUFT TUGGERS (305) -LORD KRONOS 6111 13 9 1 115 MANIACAL TUFTS (431) FARSHOT 6713 11 6 0 115 NEVERWAKE (508) -VIOLET VULTURE 6612 18 4 0 113 ANIMAL FARM (510) ROMMEL 6621 10 10 0 102 LETHAL HERITAGE (570) DONALD DUNSEN 6787 18 7 1 97 TUFT TUGGERS (305) JACKHAMMER 6613 12 7 4 97 NEVERWAKE (508) GOLDEN GLOW 6803 18 7 0 95 COLORIFIC (511) MAGENTA MAGGOT 6627 14 12 0 93 ANIMAL FARM (510) -DRACULA 6319 11 6 0 93 UNIVERSAL HORROR (552) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FLEA BAG 6804 19 9 0 89 BULLDOGS (157) -WIND RUNNER 5510 11 4 1 88 WOLFBROTHERS (506) MR. We enjoyed it. It is good to see that we share the thought that it is appropriate and a responsibility for the Duelmaster to write a DM Column. Yours was particularly telling and enjoyable. -- Kennelworth and Mino Let us both comment and support some of Doc's statements last turn: 1. For 24+ years Doc Steele has been one of the very, very best managers in the game. Maybe the best. 2. Doc Steele and The Consortium have not at all had a good relationship over the years. It has been improving of late. (We smoked a peace pipe.) 3. Doc has played admirably within the "rules" of Ultra Andorian Aruak City and we are very very pleased to have him as a part of The Heart And Soul Of Andoria. Indeed, he has greatly earned respect from us for what he is doing and how he is handling it. 4. We must admit amazement that Doc stated he would stand against Aruak City invaders now and we accept that as "enough". -- Kennelworth and Mino Doc, Maxim -- We do not know that Maxim was speaking of a Purple People Eater team, or if he was speaking of Purple People Eater, who is the Manager of The Colorific Team. If it is the latter, we can assure you that the "man" behind PPE has equal experience, skill, and tenacity as you do, Doc. -- The Consortium Folk Congratulations to Rommel, Duelmaster of Aruak City. Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Kaelen of Tuft Tuggers -- I read your note with interest last turn. You know, the one about the flippant avoid-Bulldogs comments? Well, well. Perhaps, then, your 2nd in a row avoidance of Bulldogs means something more? Trying with all your might to hold on to those dwindling tufts? They say whistling cures fear. Perhaps you should try puckering for it? (wink) -- Kennelworth Elfquest -- I am really, really sorry for Two-S0pear's demise. I know I challenged, but I really had no intentions of death. Wow! Mea culpa. -- Man's Best Friend All -- it would appear that Man's Best Friend has regained his bite. Beware. -- Kennelworth I did not mean that facetiously, Elfquest. I, too, am sorry. -- Kennelworth Leather Hide chose to "take one for the team. As a 6(+1)-11-13-7-20(+1)-16-14(+1) ST he was apparently well beyond my management abilities. -- Kennelworth Barnabas -- Back at you Pal. -- Kennelworth Dartor! Wow! Congrats on the 5-0! You should stick around more and make us all feel inadequate. Salute. -- Kennelworth Lord Bennett -- I, a mere peasant, am not good enough to have outlasted you. It was my gold which was glowing, not the glint of your tarnished steel. -- Golden Glow, Proud Colorific Pee Wee Herman -- I took my thumb and stuck it in your squeaky throat! -- Green Thumb, Proud Colorific Farshot -- What a weird fight, was surprised I lasted as long as I did, you seem a little strange, are you human? -- Mr. B. Flea Bag -- Boy, wasn't that an exciting fight! -- Lord Bennett Lon -- You hit like a Mack truck, caught me by surprise. -- Domingo Joe -- Thanks for the victory, I really needed that to boost my low esteem. -- Samantha Charlotte -- Man, I came out smokin', I just knew it was my day! -- Dayle Glassjaw Xiang -- Huzzah. It's good to be back, and doubly good to see our good friend and the great Doc back as well. Let the misbehaving commence? -- Seraphim Temp Ed. -- Golems have minds? -- Seraphim Chief Sitting Bull -- You gooder Chief, Me gooder Sitter. -- Barricade Rommel -- Congratulations on the Throne. -- Doc Steele for Onewolf Kennelworth -- Thanks for confirming the Duelmaster exception. Up is up will be the on-going policy. -- Doc Steele Lord Xiang -- Good to know that Lethal Heritage is you. Good luck. -- Doc Steele Tuft Tuggers -- I'll challenge up when not on the Throne. That is until someone DCs me. Then all bets will be off. -- Doc Steele Dator -- I got a good chuckle out of your personal ad. I just had my 36th birthday, but in the game timeline I am "ancient." Thanks for the encouragement. This is an excellent arena; I look forward to playing here for a long time. -- Doc Steele Walk the Line -- Back to the end of the line, buddy! *grin* -- Patton Jon Flute -- Salute! -- Yamamoto Portland Porky -- Neener-neener!! -- MacArthur Green Thumb -- Bah!! Consoriumite! -- Pee-Wee Herman Rommel -- Congratulations to a Duelmaster who seemed to earn his throne the hard way! Well done. -- Kaelen, Tuft Tuggers Well, that's one way to peek the most ralupop title! Let the Consortium llik your competition! -- Donald Dunsen Patton -- As long as it wasn't MY booby(s) that was your prize. -- Danika Barnabas -- Another welcome guest! Aruak seems to be a resort for 'out of towners' these days. -- Kaelen, Tuft Tuggers Koro Cloud -- It seems I have definitely surpassed you all around. -- Kaelen Jumpin' -- Toast. -- Airk Doc Steele -- It brings us pride to learn you think so highly of some of Aruak's managers. But we get even more joy knowing that you enjoy not only the arena culture, but find a good challenge in our play style, and even more joy knowing you're having fun in a basic arena. Alas, not any arena, but the Aruak City arena! As for blowing up, we love it! Nothing like a great competitive (hopefully at least mildly friendly) feud to keep things entertaining and fun! Salute! -- Tuft Tuggers Jackhammer -- <looks at own weapon, checks to make sure she herself is not broken either> I must have been drugged to perform so poorly compared to recent fights. <points at him> I'm not finished. -- Danika Saffron Skunk -- Point that thing someplace else! -- Johnny Ash Magenta Maggot -- Lucky. You caught me on a ffo day. I'll try again. -- Donald Blue Smash -- It surprises me to no end that I can actually win as a gladiator. <she spits the word out in despise> -- Fiona Dracula -- We have the lord of your kind as our ally. You should join us. -- Zyn'kyr Koro Cloud -- Those who are not Aruaki, are not 'local'. <rolls eyes> -- Fiona Yamamato -- You rushed out screaming in some unknown language, and it unnerved me. I'm a very conventional kind of guy, and I didn't know what to make of it. -- Jon Flute P.S. Besides, I startle easily. Very nervous disposition. Pink Eye -- Have you tried eyedrops? The pollen blowing around this year is terrible, isn't it? -- Selia Storm P.S. Oops, I didn't realize I'd killed you. Well, um, maybe it isn't fatal, but you can retire? Kaelen Thuderheart -- Why am I not surprised? -- Koro Cloud Dirk Darkblade -- Mine's shiny, but that doesn't seem to stop it. -- Pony Bark -- It occurs to me that I don't really like dogs.... -- Horsefly Chief Sitting Bull -- (cough, cough) Smoking...not good for you! (cough, cough, wheeze) -- Jon Flute Samantha -- I do try. -- Selia Storm Kaelen -- That's true. Dark Root causes serious personality problems, which is a whole different problem. -- Koro Cloud Our congratulations to Lord Bennett. -- Krill Cavalry Kaelen -- When I was in the wars, they let me use all my skills. Damned Grey Witch put a spell on me to make sure I "wasn't too good."
