There had been a day when the Dark Arena had faked death in Andoria to allow the poor unfortunate souls to retire in peace. And now today, even the regular fights were bloody, and it showed in the visceral reactions of the crowd. With the breakdown of magic in Ghea and the establishment of a new magical order, the world had turned on its head. Those events had unleashed so much chaos, that King Mickeal had his hands full just trying to administer the kingdom, let alone defend it and solve all its problems. One of those was Khaldren. And that's why Tankesh was here, watching as the Dark Arena fights began, beside a seductive, yet cunningly manipulative, and possibly evil woman. The King was weak in many ways, but not in his friends, and it was Tankesh's job to help take down Khaldren. If it meant dealing with...whoever this woman was, who seemed to be his enemy as well, then so be it. Tankesh watched as the Arenamaster signaled for the fight to begin. His 'companion' grinned at the sight of Devellan Jara giving the signal. He filed that tidbit of thought away with his broken knowledge that something had happened to or with the Arenamaster just before he'd.... A gentle hand touched his. "You can call me...Fleur." Tankesh's mind tickled with the notion that she paused as if she'd had to consider her name. "Now, I have some information for you." SHE drew her chair closer to his. HE tried not to spy down her blouse. It was difficult, and she had a faint scent, like vanilla and cinnamon, that was alluring. "Khaldren is fueling the chaos in Aruak through the arena. See the crowd?" she asked, looking away from him briefly to survey the rotunda end to end, and gesturing delicately. "They thrive on carnage, more than ever, because their minds have been warped. Every death fuels a device, a device powered by blood magic, that twists their minds and taints their magical blood. The weaker willed the Aruaki, the more the device is capable of inflicting them with its curse...a curse that they can pass on." She looked him in the eyes, then surveyed his body briefly. Tankesh did the same, but blinked. Fleur continued. "It is spreading throughout the city. Find this device, and you find the means to lift the curse." Tankesh scoffed slightly. The arena was huge, and he knew how small magical devices could be. "Where do I start?" he asked. The crowd roared suddenly, and it did not die down. The patrons, the 'cursed' patrons, were ecstatic with visceral joy, some even attacking each other. Tankesh and Fleur looked down at the sands and saw that Wurm Kin had decapitated his latest foe. "Him," Fleur answered. "Wurm Kin is the only person I know who is a lackey of Khaldren. Start there, and work your way into his organization until you get the information...needed to find the device." Tankesh's elven eyes narrowed as he surveyed Wurm Kin. "Watch out with him though. THIS particular Wurm Kin has more to his name than just...panache. I will keep in touch and give you a way to contact me. When you learn its location, tell me." "Why?" Tankesh asked, turning on Fleur. "Why can only you destroy it? And why can't YOU find it?" He paused. "And why are YOU so interested in this?" "I can not find it because it is shielded by magic. And I do not have..." she leaned closer, "your talents, investigative or...otherwise. And only _I_ can destroy it because none of your 'friends' will understand its magic." Tankesh flashed her a look. He knew deep inside what that really meant. She wasn't as feeble as she seemed, nor untainted. This 'Fleur' had a dark side that was darker then he realized. "Lastly," she interrupted, "I have a keen dislike of Khaldren and his goals..." Fleur leaned closer, her lips brushing Tankesh's. "And I am interested in this because I have a keen _like_ of something..." her hand reached inside his thigh. "Else." Tankesh raised an eyebrow with more than a passing interest. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Cities by the Shore #19 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Aruak City: Fandil was reluctant to move on from the doorway where Adie had disappeared. It seemed like abandoning her, even though there was nothing he could DO there, and he might find some way to act and help if he continued. Plus there was the job he was supposed to be doing. Because Adie had disappeared did not lessen the importance of the job: the blood magic focus had to be deactivated, destroyed if possible. He wished that Cho hadn't stayed behind in Point. Ah, but if wishes were horses, all beggars would ride. Better to deal with what was real here. That he was inside the arena and alone. Perhaps Khaldren or his lieutenants thought all the danger to them must come from Adie, because her fiery personality made her the most visible. He would show them that age and cunning had its uses, too. Fandil flexed the fingers of his free hand, transferred his staff to that hand, and flexed the fingers of his other hand; ready to work. He extended his magical senses along the corridor and as far into the adjoining spaces as he could. No people within his range, which meant nobody close enough to be a problem. Nobody here in the sub-cellar of the arena, nobody near the stairhead to the next level up. No...people. But he sensed a mind, at the least an awareness. Perhaps a golem. On this level, ahead and to his right by thirty yards or so. That would be a place to start. Adie waited for her hidden opponent to make a move, and it did nothing. Foolish of it. She could be preparing a spell that would blast all hostile presences into-- No, she couldn't. She suddenly recognized the configuration of forces and intentions confronting her: it was the blood-magic collector or some part of it. The device she had come here to destroy. But if she formed a spell here and now, the collector would simply absorb the energy. She dared take no magical action in the presence of this thing. And for physical action, she needed a physical enemy, and preferably a little light to see him by. Laughter, and a man's voice. "You are more cautious than I was led to expect. Perhaps you will survive after all. That would be...pleasing. You are well-formed, and for a woman, intelligent. I have been alone long enough, I think." In the darkness, something closed around Adie's wrist. Perhaps a man's hand. Perhaps...not. It had no warmth of flesh, did not quite feel like fingers as it drew her "forward." She held back her immediate impulse to fight against it. She could do nothing standing here in the blackness, and this contact might take her to a place where she could act. "Am I in communication with Great Khaldren himself, then?" she asked. "In communication with," the voice repeated. "Yes, that is well put. "And yes, I am Khaldren. None other could bespeak you here. Certainly not that old fool you left behind!" "Where is 'here'?" "No particular place, at the moment, but I will have you brought to my citadel. My current, temporary, citadel, as I shall have a much more suitable place created for me once I finish this business between myself and the Madwoman Sheila of the Isle." "Madwoman?" "Oh, yes, unquestionably. She's been insane for centuries, you know, but she used to hide it better. Since the Eyes of the Isle failed, she has become... careless. Or perhaps she no longer realizes that her mind is going." His voice became thoughtful, and Adie had a mental image of him leaning back in a chair, maybe swirling a mouthful of brandy in a snifter, something casual, anyway. "Age alone would be enough to wear her down, even a pure elf grows tired in time, but the Grey Wand is an active agent of Chaos. She used to understand that danger and shield herself, but no longer. I could simply wait until the Wand has destroyed her utterly, as it will if nothing is done. But I have already waited...a long time. I am fundamentally not a patient man," Khaldren said, "and you would do well to remember that." Adie was silent for several moments. Khaldren's calm assumptions with regard to Lady Sheila were stunning in the first place. And then when she thought about them...disturbing. Adie was half elven herself and knew many elves claimed that no one not of pure descent could support the weight of memory that came with centuries of life. They were biased, of course, and they exaggerated, but...not completely. And Sheila was only a quarter elven, and more than centuries old. Four or five thousand years, according to the stories Adie had heard. Oh, true, there WERE ways to deal with that danger, if you recognized it in time. And the Grey Wand was undeniably a Chaos artifact. Sheila kept it with her always, actually carried it on her person. If the shielding was insufficient-- The outstretched hand by which she was being led touched something solid. Stone. Fitted stones, she could feel a joint between two blocks. "I seem to have arrived somewhere now," she said, "so now you can tell me where that is." "A poor replacement for the golden towers of Elinar," Khaldren said. "I believe you people call it Zorpunt." SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of ARUAK CITY brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, NEVERWAKE, since COLORIFIC took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps up, VOLTRON, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 5 in the rankings? SCARLET KNIGHTS II turned their 2-0-0 turn into a 9th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 3-1-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, MANIC MARVELS, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see DICKY V GOES POSTAL win a fight and gain 17 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FLEA BAG beat WALK THE LINE and WALK THE LINE lost 9 points. You're breakin' my heart. Due to absence, and inability to defend the throne, ONEWOLF has lost the Title of Duelmaster. Start setting that alarm earlier! And it's out with the old, in with the new, as MR. B. takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Victory Tavern, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From ARUAK CITY's trash dumps? Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. What's the big D? VOLTRON was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like BULLDOGS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, HORSEFLY was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to MAN'S BEST FRIEND of BULLDOGS for challenging up by 20 to AIRK ARCSTONE. MAN'S BEST FRIEND won to get 106 points of recognition. Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's see if anyone's dead or dying. Gee, IMMORTALS, ain't it past due for sending LON BRADDOCK Dark Arena? What took ol' '9-11-1' so long? Hope? Ha ha aha ha! Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see BROWN NOSE and COLORIFIC at The Victory Tavern tonight celebrating their bloodfeud victory over SELIA STORM. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? There's got to be a better place in ARUAK CITY to get a drink than The Victory Tavern! Any suggestions? Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of ARUAK CITY. I feel much better now.
