Under Krael:

Old Doc Circ insisted that he be the one to throw the mixed explosive against
the ceiling. "This material is of my creation," he said, "and I'm the one who
understands it best. Also, as a youth, I did a certain amount of, ah, throwing
things."
"Relic of a misspent youth?" Senator Sedalia muttered. "I could tell a few
tales of my own--"
"Not now," Cho cut in. "The malign power of this place is affecting us all, in
small and temporary ways now but it will increase with exposure. Let us do this and
get out as quickly as we may."
     Sedalia nodded and stepped back.
Circ finished molding the second putty-like mass of explosive and glanced upward
at the carven ceiling. "Any specific spots up there I should aim for?"
"Opposite sides of the inner circle of sigils," Cho said, "but anywhere within
the sigils will do."
"Right, everyone out of the way, start back along the route we laid out," the
old alchemist said.
Each of the others picked up part of Circ's gear--the old man would not need any
encumbrance once he threw the explosives into place and began his own run for
safety--and left. Gissanniah started to coil up the cord they'd followed down into
the maze, then left it. The cord might make it easier for Circ to follow...if he
survived this first stage.
The tunnel seemed narrower than when they'd come down it, the walls closing in,
squeezing them, choking off the air. Gissanniah decided that had to be all in her
mind, she didn't LIKE small closed places under the ground like this, and maybe it
was part of the "small and temporary" effects of the sigils, too, but-- The sound of
footsteps behind her made her jump, and she looked back.
It was Circ, running, and he gestured breathlessly for her to move faster.
"Only ten minutes to get out of here," he reminded her as he caught up.
"If you fall and twist an ankle--"
"Oh. Yes, good point." The old alchemist slowed down just a little. "Or if I
get too winded to run." He grimaced. "It's been a while since I stayed in condition
for the arena every two weeks."
They closed the distance to Sedalia and Cho, who were mixing another wad of
explosive.
"Keep going!" Sedalia barked. "Go on to the next point and start mixing there."
"Right." Gissanniah grabbed the now-wheezing alchemist by the arm and kept
moving along the cord to the next node of the pattern.
While they were mixing there, Sedalia and Cho hurried past. Circ placed the
explosive, and they ran farther upward, passing the senator and Cho again. Another
batch.
"This is the last one," Cho said as he and Sedalia caught up with them. "We
don't dare take longer, things are about to blow." He grimaced. "Too bad we didn't
have Raigavor along, he LIKES blowing things up."
Gissanniah took the wad of chemical-soaked cotton from Circ and pressed it to
the sigil on the ceiling. "Will this be enough?"
     "Probably. Almost certainly. Now, RUN!"

Aruak City:

Fandil was reluctant to move on from the doorway where Adie had disappeared. It
seemed like abandoning her, even though there was nothing he could DO there, and he
might find some way to act and help if he continued. Plus there was the job he was
supposed to be doing. Because Adie had disappeared did not lessen the importance of
the job: the blood magic focus had to be deactivated, destroyed if possible. He
wished that Cho hadn't stayed behind in Point.
Ah, but if wishes were horses, all beggars would ride. Better to deal with what
was real here. That he was inside the arena and alone. Perhaps Khaldren or his
lieutenants thought all the danger to them must come from Adie, because her fiery
personality made her the most visible. He would show them that age and cunning had
its uses, too. Fandil flexed the fingers of his free hand, transferred his staff to
that hand, and flexed the fingers of his other hand; ready to work. He extended his
magical senses along the corridor and as far into the adjoining spaces as he could.
No people within his range, which meant nobody close enough to be a problem.
Nobody here in the sub-cellar of the arena, nobody near the stairhead to the next
level up. No...people. But he sensed a mind, at the least an awareness. Perhaps a
golem. On this level, ahead and to his right by thirty yards or so.
That would be a place to start.
Fandil shifted his staff into his left hand and wiped his right hand on his
robe, shifted it back and wiped his left. Maybe he was getting a little old for this
kind of adventure...no, it was just nerves. And he was really worried about Adie.
His mouth twitched, finally curving into a smile. She wouldn't like being considered
a "fragile flower of femininity," though. She could take care of herself. Better to
worry about what he was going to find.
He reached a cross-corridor and paused. The Awareness, golem or whatever, was
down this way. He ran over a few spells in his mind, just checking lightly to make
sure they were ready, the way a warrior might check to make sure his sword was ready
to hand. Power moved here, seething just under the surface of physical reality,
spinning slowly toward the Awareness. That probably meant that the presence he
sensed was the collector-concentrator-transmitter of the gathered blood-power, or
something placed to guard it.
He turned to the right and moved down the narrow corridor, counting his paces to
block out the tension.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Sure, sure, I know. Who here would have thought that a Vulture would be on top
of things in Aruak City. Why not? Vultures are typically on top of things. We
roost on high. We clean up the environment from the top of the "trash". We eat well
--certainly better than most. Vultures rule!
So, how about me? What's a Vulture got going?

I know, that's all a little personal, but it IS me. You get what you see.
Good luck to everyone moving forward. May you not find yourself as a part of
the environmental carrion. If you do, I'll just have to well, you know. Sayonara.

                                      SPY REPORT

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out ARUAK CITY to
see what's new. Too bad, COLORIFIC, but BULLDOGS was just too good to be stopped.
HELL'S BELLES like really fought hard to move up to 9th from 15th. Way to go! One
team deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 1 after going 4-0-0. Keep it up,
ANIMAL FARM! MVP award for JON FLUTE? KRILL CAVALRY's proud of him after beating
ONE-EYE and getting 22 points. Talk about yer major upsets! WOLFBROTHER's match
with MAGENTA MAGGOT cost it a loss of 14 points! The Duelmaster isn't going to stop
just cause she's Number One! JUMPIN' knows this. He was challenged by the
Duelmaster. This Duelmaster is like something else! VIOLET VULTURE stopped JUMPIN'
dead in his tracks! I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours
sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? NEVERWAKE was the most avoided
team. Is a 114-140-15 record really that scary? Is there some deep dark secret why
BULLDOGS' been avoiding NEVERWAKE so much? Or is it just that they're too scared?
Can KRILL CAVALRY's SELIA STORM be more popular than me? She was challenged the
most, but is that really the same? Speaking of challenging 27 points above did you
hear about CAT RIO of HELL'S BELLES vs. IMMORTALS' BLUE SMASH? (And how was that
intro!) CAT RIO lost to BLUE SMASH, but he got 2 points. BLUE SMASH won, and got 2
points. I don't get it. For sure, I was holding my breath when I found out MORTICIA
ADDAMS challenged HORSEFLY. After all, haven't HELL'S BELLES and KRILL CAVALRY had a
long standing duel in ARUAK CITY? It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but
HORSEFLY wants me to write about it since he was subdued by MORTICIA ADDAMS.
Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys
can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Its been
really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Question of the Week! A manager on Noblish Island asks: How do weapons affect
different types of armor? Any responses could be posted here and I'll forward them,
or posted in the Noblish Island (DM 93) newsletter. Thanks. -- Leeta and Jorja,
Krill Cavalry

Congratulations to Violet Vulture, Duelmaster of Aruak City. Duelmasters drink free
at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth

Horsefly -- Perhaps you spoke too soon? Or perhaps your bite went South? -- Bark

Sleepy, Dreamers -- Missed that. Thanks, Jorja; do you know them? A salute to
Sleepy's 1000+ wins! -- Kennelworth

Khalhums Dwarf -- Thanks for reaching up to pet me, pal. (You remind me of The
Sentinel or The Death Stud--wink.) -- Man's Best Friend

One-Eye -- Keep on scratchin'. -- Flea Bag

Blue Smash -- Me smashum, you bluem. How. -- Chief Sitting Bull

Venus V. Devinci -- It was a pretty picture until it came time for dinner. -- Filet
Mignon

Hey, Doc. Yo, Lady Adie. Where were you all? -- Kennelworth

Tromat Ironshoe of Khalhums -- Why should I choose my own? I'm just going to pick
them to pieces anyway. Carrion. -- Violet V

Avast, Kennelworth, ye landlubber. Showed ye now! Me critters 5-0-1 done planked
yon 5-0-0, eh? -- Mino

Delhia's Gone -- It was my pleasure. Consider yourself maggotized. Yeah. -- Magenta
Maggot

Morticia Addams -- I would say that stunk, but then, you might think that a bad
thing, when, indeed, I was thrilled! -- Saffron Skunk

Mordant Derserter -- Well, I didn't think you should die for that deserting, but
then.... -- Wheat Wildebeast

Convicted Thief -- Oh, well, I thought it was fun. -- Lilac Lizard

Jon Flute -- Why thank you for all the compliments. I'm glad I came immediately to
your defense yesterday. I heard some people downgrading and chastising you and
saying that you were not even fit to sleep in the slop with the hogs. I promptly
stated that I thought you were. -- Wheat Wildebeast

Colorifics were not perfect, I shall admit; but I am reasonably satisfied with the
4-1-0. The best stay the best and on top. -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific
Manager

Selia Storm -- I WILL NOT wash it until you touch it. -- Brown Nose, Proud Colorific

Assassin -- The chicken crossed the road because you couldn't catch it and kill it,
Dunce. -- Golden Glow and Yellow Fever, Proud Colorifics

Veteran Mercenary -- Ho hum. -- Golden Glow, Proud Colorific

Pony -- Hah! Beaten to the finish line by a pretty nose! -- Brown Nose, Proud
Colorific

Ambitious Guard -- Ho hum. -- Black Eye, Proud Colorific

Convicted Thief -- You surely are a poor fighter, aren't you? -- Yellow Fever, Proud
Colorific

Man's Best Friend -- First of all, you can have the win, but not the tuft, sorry.
The Commission FAILED to send me to the Dark Arena as I had requested, so I had no
avoids, no if-challenged strats, etc. I was neither prepared for nor expecting you.
Second, you only won because somebody blunted my sword before the fight. Did you see
that none of my attacks did extra damage and many sweet attacks bounced? Sabotage I
say! So no tuft for you on that fight! But you earned a win, you can keep it. --
Airk Arcstone

Joker's Wild -- Gone already? Sheesh! -- Tuft Tuggers

All -- We're out of town a bit. Several things on our plate, notwithstanding our
manager is out adventuring, and Tankesh felt he had to do the same and summarily
vanished. We'll be back though. -- Tuft Tuggers
P.S. Consortium, enjoy the wins while we're gone...

Wolfbrothers -- That was not nice at all. Saraya was trying to become my first
parry-lunge to advanced and you killed her with little regard. I won't bloodfeud
with Dirk because of your style advantage. Hopefully, Blue Smash can move up and get
in range. -- Dartor

Shotgun Ghandi -- Hey! I didn't do it! -- Koro Cloud

Dicky V Goes Postal -- Thanks, I needed that. -- Jon Flute
P.S. Clears the sinuses.

Brown Nose -- No way I want you behind me. -- Pony

Bark -- (gagging and wincing away) Halitosis. -- Horsefly
P.S. I shouldn't have inspired you to try biting.

Green Thumb -- Gosh, I bet you couldn't kill a houseplant! -- Selia Storm

Wheat Wildebeast -- It will just make you more beautifully blonde, you know. -- Jon
Flute

Our congratulations to Violet Vulture. -- Jorja and the Krill Cavalry
