True, there wasn't much to see here. It seemed a limbo-ish type of place. A room, minimally indicated by gray walls, floor, ceiling. No windows. No obvious lighting. Something that might, if you were feeling generous, be called a table and a couple of very basic chairs. Limbo was not unexpected, but he had never imagined it to be furnished. He touched one of the chairs curiously. It didn't feel like any particular type of material, wood or metal or whatever, but it felt solid. Real. Ready to support him. And he definitely wanted to sit down and do some thinking. With a shrug, he sat in the chair, let his hands rest on the table. Okay. He was sitting, and his old bones were glad of that. Now to think. First, was he alive, dead, or something in between? Hmm. Of itself, that probably didn't matter. It was what he could DO that mattered. He had something that certainly seemed to be his familiar body, and until proven otherwise, he would assume that it would function more or less as it always had. He wiggled the fingers of one hand in demonstration of that. He wasn't about to fire off a spell without knowing where he was and what might be affected; that would be irresponsible. But he could sense an Arcanum. Not powerful, but it seemed steady. He sifted through the commoner spells, just looking at the patterns in his mind and not attempting to energize any of them. He could probably cast a spell here. Better not to do so until he had some prupose beyond just "seeing if he could do it." So he was probably as functional as he could expect to be, and maybe more. Fine. Where was he, and could he go somewhere else? "Fancy meeting you here!" Fandil jumped and looked around quickly. Cho was walking toward the table. Questions crowded his thoughts. He picked one. "Where are we?" Cho shrugged and settled into the other chair with a sigh. "Nowhere particular," he said. "Think of it as... time out. And how did you get here?" "That was going to be next question," the Ardiventi mage said, "closely followed by 'how do we leave?' I don't know how I got here." He paused and frowned, searching his memory. "The golem at the arena did something. I think this was meant to be an alternative to dying by implosion. As such, I like it. And you?" "I'm just passing through on my way to somewhere else. This is, um, a short cut." Fandil laughed. He hadn't thought he could laugh right now, but Cho said the damnedest things with a straight face and such a reasonable tone! When he could stop, he asked, "How do I get back to Alastari from here?" "That's, well, Alastari is a strange place to get to because it's so tangled up in multiversal quantum strings, but it shouldn't actually be hard." Cho paused, frowning at nothing. "Are you familiar with the Nexian Gate?" "Certainly. That's a basic transfer point for--" "Good. Fix your mind on the Nexia, close your eyes, and start walking?" "That's all?" "Yes." Cho gestured around at the grayness. "This isn't exactly a 'place', you see. It's more like a state of mind, and a lot harder to reach than Nexia. A lot easier to leave than to arrive here, too." "Good. Somehow I didn't expect it to be simple. Ah... what about you?" "Business Elsewhere," Cho said. "Rather messy. You're well out of it." Zorpunt: Adie put all her will into the spear of flame. It was by the will that it was thrown, not the hand. Whatever wickedness Khaldren intended here, he would not survive to encompass it. A distant part of her mind kept telling her to get her anger under control, but she had held in her long and fully justified anger at what he was doing for too long. Restraint merely let him do more. And she was tired of being restrained. She poured out her wrath without hesitation. Khaldren had gathered the fuel for this fire, let him roast in it. All his stronghold was on fire now, roaring up into the night sky. Everything flammable burned, stones cracked and fell. Bursts of strongly colored flame showed where some spellbook or magical device was consumed. Good! Let them all burn. Let there be nothing left for any other foolish and ambitious mage to find and use. She became aware of someone calling her name and pulled her attention away from the fire. Reluctantly, because it was HER fire, and it was doing HER work of destruction here. She saw Fandil standing well back from the flames and waving to get her attention. She went toward him, then frowned as he backed farther away. "Put out your fires, Adie!" She looked around, then realized he meant the fires with which she was cloaked. She quenched them. Slowly, not because it was difficult but because she... didn't want to? She would not let Khaldren infect her that way! "What happened in Aruak City?" "It's a long story, but the device has been destroyed there," Fandil said. "How about helping the fire-fighters before all Zorpunt burns down?" Iaye: Senator Sedalia dropped his carpetbag on the floor just inside the doorway to the Lenpros guildhouse. To him the muted thump sounded weary. And the gods knew he was weary enough himself, and Old Doc Circ and Gissanniah as well. His manager, who had been sitting in front of the fire with a brandy snifter cradled in his hand, looked up. "How did it go?" Sedalia shook his head. "It didn't go at all," he said. "For two days all we got was a run-around, and flunkies telling us that 'the king is too busy to see you'." He lowered himself into the other chair, glad of the warmth of the fire. It had been foul weather for traveling, rain or snow the whole time. "Finally they told us the king had gone to the Isle 'to observe the tourney' and would not be returning 'for some time'. Pfaugh! What kind of king runs off to the Isle when his people are suffering?" Lenpro raised an eyebrow, firelight reflecting in his eyes. "A king who is courting a popular rebellion," he said. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 293): LORD BYRON of SMITHSONIAN (Curator, mgr.) My, this place SMELLS! Smells mighty fine, if you ask me. Yes, it does. Such a sweet, sweet smell. I had hoped to get the chance to wrestle this title from Onewolf. Us skunks have a thing about wolves, you know? But, such as it was, Onewolf was sitting the defense out. I suppose he needed the rest. I suppose. Now, Selia was no easy bargain replacement. No way! At least with The Wolf Of One, I had a style advantage. But not with The Storm. No! However, I gladly accept the throne because I worked hard for it. It is too soon to reveal my stats. I am working even harder to stay alive and graduate from The Heart And Soul Of Andoria. I cannot give away any secrets just yet. Suffice to say, a repeat title will be difficult. But I will give it my best shot. Unlike the last Duelmaster, I shall not abdicate. Saffron Skunk, Duelmaster SPY REPORT Welcome ARUAK CITY. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Bein' on top is great while it lasts, BULLDOGS. But how many friends do you have now? Hmmmph! I always thought DEADMAN'S HAND was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 1-2-0! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! TARSUS DOLPHINS is now ranked 6th with a 3-2-0 turn. ANIMAL FARM showed ARUAK CITY what they were made of as they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-0-1. What's with SELIA STORM? She actually beat BULLDOGS' FLEA BAG, and walked away with 24 more points from the fight. Major screwup at IMMORTALS. SLY APPARITION lost 12 points to SNOW WHITE. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe SLY APPARITION will provide more easy wins... Try as he might, GALLOWS POLE wasn't good enough at persuading SAFFRON SKUNK to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. ARUAK CITY thinks SINEW and their 9-10-1 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... The bums at TARSUS DOLPHINS couldn't face the challenges from SINEW! No excuse for that! What do people see in FILET MIGNON? Hers 13-4-1? BULLDOGS ain't talkin', but she's got 55 points. ONEWOLF expects the easy win by going 67 points down. KORO CLOUD will find this a hard lesson! ONEWOLF subdued KORO CLOUD. WOLFBROTHERS calls this fighting? In my day... A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. Sending a warrior to the Dark Arena reminds the others they'd better shape up. Tough beans, BLUE SMASH. That's what a 15-25-1 gets you. We all knew it had to happen sooner or later. A warrior can't stick around with a 10-14-1, and SILVER SNAIL easily took care of JOE THE SPLICE. TREMOR was plum wore out after VENUS V. DIVINCI pounded 'im silly in a Bloodfeud. SINEW'll have to get a little better before going after VENUS V. DIVINCI again! Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty. Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. ARUAK CITY is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SAFFRON SKUNK 6910 13 5 0 168 ANIMAL FARM (510) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ONEWOLF 5505 33 6 0 166 WOLFBROTHERS (506) SLEDGE 6917 14 5 3 142 NEVERWAKE (508) SMUSH 6916 11 1 0 121 NEVERWAKE (508) SELIA STORM 6953 14 7 2 110 KRILL CAVALRY (374) FLEA BAG 6804 29 16 0 103 BULLDOGS (157) WALK THE LINE 6708 22 32 0 103 ELFQUEST (515) KORO CLOUD 6618 17 46 0 99 KRILL CAVALRY (374) CHIEF SITTING BULL 6872 21 8 0 98 BULLDOGS (157) DELIA'S GONE 6707 19 35 0 94 ELFQUEST (515) BLACK EYE 6946 10 3 0 91 COLORIFIC (511) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GALLOWS POLE 5496 14 7 0 87 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) BARK 6915 15 12 0 83 BULLDOGS (157) JON FLUTE 6922 12 16 0 83 KRILL CAVALRY (374) -LITTLE CROW 6007 11 2 1 83 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) -SHOTGUN GANDHI 6760 5 0 0 81 ARMED & GREGARIOUS (580) LILAC LIZARD 6964 13 2 0 80 ANIMAL FARM (510) -BROWN NOSE 6939 5 0 0 78 COLORIFIC (511) PONY 6820 17 26 0 77 KRILL CAVALRY (374) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SILVER SNAIL 7006 7 2 1 66 ANIMAL FARM (510) HORSEFLY 6860 12 23 0 64 KRILL CAVALRY (374) -YELLOW FEVER 6978 6 0 0 58 COLORIFIC (511) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -ECRU ELEPHANT 7005 7 1 0 56 ANIMAL FARM (510) FILET MIGNON 6981 13 4 1 55 BULLDOGS (157) HARLIN DOBBS 5486 9 8 0 51 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) SNOW WHITE 7010 6 2 0 45 COLORIFIC (511) PIGSTICKER 7035 4 0 0 42 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) -DICKY V GOES POSTAL 6940 1 4 0 37 ARMED & GREGARIOUS (580) -GREEN THUMB 6830 9 8 0 35 COLORIFIC (511) CAT RIO 597 7 13 1 35 HELL'S BELLES (68) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SLY APPARITION 7000 8 6 1 33 IMMORTALS (85) SLAG 6947 4 2 0 32 NEVERWAKE (508) VENUS V. Makes for a really fine aimer; yes, indeed. -- Kennelworth Congratulations to Saffron Skunk from Animal Farm, Duelmaster of Aruak City. Health. Humility. Honor. Duelmasters drink free at The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor Cat Rio -- You gave it a terrific shot! I was surprised (read--unprepared) by your bloodfeud and was very, very lucky to hold on for the win. -- Filet Mignon Koro -- Yu fly. Me sittum. Me winnum. -- Chief Sitting Bull Blue Smash -- We hope you will "stick around". That Dartor can drive a cold, hard bargain. -- Kennelworth Walk The Line -- Some may have said that was boring, but I must admit that I enjoyed the music. -- Flea Bag Arwen -- Everybody loves you. I was lucky to get to spend time up close and personal. (sigh) -- Puppy Love Pony -- My yelp made you skittish, did it? Well, bark, bark! -- Bark I would surely hate to see my brother, Fandil The Wise, blown up in his mission with that golem. I surely would. -- Kennelworth Joe The Splice -- No pity for wildebeest, eh? Just because he died in the infirmary at your hand? Take that, Joe! Take that! -- Lilac Lizard Jak Silverflame -- Hmmmmmm. I guess you get to suffer right along with Joe The Cold. So take that, too! -- Butter Burro Sly Apparition -- I had a field day with my trunk and my tusk. Salute. -- Ecru Elephant Krill -- Ye be bloody fine; ye be. Thankee fer me Beest! Aye. -- Mino Onewolf? Oh, Onewolf! Where are you? I want you. It will be just my luck for Doc to tease me with your possible running, only to find that I will have been challenged by others, and no Onewolf will have run. Surely not.... -- Saffron Skunk Delia's Gone -- You almost were, weren't you? -- Black Eye, Proud Colorific Nahum -- Next time you will keep things neat and snow whitish, won't you? Honest to pete, you'd fit right in. -- Jon Flute Bark -- Well, I always jump and stumble when dogs bark at me. It's what horses do. -- Pony Consortium -- Well I must give you congratulations for going 3-0 against my team last turn. Maybe someday I'll figure out the answers like why Joe the Splice couldn't finish him off or why Sly didn't get to attack again. -- Dartor Hell's Belles -- I'm sorry for laughing heartlessly, I really didn't think Tina was that bad off. Sorry. -- Tremor Puppy Love -- Instead of a sword I think a can opener would have worked better. I'm glad it wasn't monotonous to you. -- Kai Din, Din, Din -- Easy now, watch where you swing that thing! I feel like Nearly Headless Nick. -- Hatari Jax -- Not to bad yourself on you first fight too. -- Nahum Saffron Skunk -- Congratulations on making Duelmaster! -- Tarsus Dolphins Hell's Belles -- Sorry about Tina. I know how it feels to lose one of your own team mates. May Tina rest in peace. -- Tarsus Dolphins Sinew -- Congratulations for getting moved up to #4 in the to 5. -- Tarsus Dolphins Jax -- Sorry you didn't get to fight last time, oh well. May be they think you are too good to fight every time. (wink) -- Tarsus Dolphins Puppy Love -- I see you are competing to the top, good luck with that. Also good fight last time. -- Arwen Dartor -- Don't worry about Cortez; he's in a better place right now and apologies accepted. And good luck with Din's blood thirstiness.
