"Who is he that he should become king of the Andorian League? What do you know of him?" "Little more than you do. He is as ambitious as any man I've ever seen," Herlas said. "Ruthless. As to his background, nothing. People who asked questions when he first appeared... disappeared." The woman glanced at him, and her eyes reminded him of her name: Fireblade. "Did YOU try, magician?" "Yes. I have never liked dealing with the unknown." "And yet, here you are. Not disappeared." One hand went to the hilt of her sword. He looked away and shrugged. Hoped his face wasn't red with the memory of that. "It was a close thing, I think. But he needed a magician he could control, and he... decided he could control me." "How?" Now he was sure he was flushing, and it was all he could do not to hang his head in shame. But he kept his voice steady. "Blackmail. I have done things in the past that I would not like made public--" "Why am I not surprised?" "Worse things than just... indiscretions and bending of the rules. Things I bitterly regret, now, when it's too late to not-do them. Things that, well, would make it laughable for ME to be trying to do the right thing now, if it weren't for the fact that no one else seems willing or able." Fireblade's eyebrows rose. "And you know what is the 'right thing' to do now?" "Gods, I wish! I'm hoping you've got a clue here, Lady. But at the least, I will take Korneth with me, if I go down. I have already done what I can to insure that." She made a sharp gesture with one hand, to dismiss his statement. Or so he thought. Until he noticed Korneth approaching. He went hot with embarrassment again. How many years had it been since he'd made such an amateur's mistake as not watching who was around him? When Korneth reined his mount around to ride beside the magician, Herlas said, "I'm not sure this parade was a good idea." "You think not? But there were people beginning to wonder if the king was dead, you know. It is necessary for a people to have confidence in the existence of its leader." Herlas wondered if the mocking undertone in Korneth's voice was intentional. "It may give them a belief in his continued existence," he said, "but it hardly inspires confidence in his fitness to rule." "It just reminds them of how little has been done for the League as a whole in the past few years," Fireblade added. Korneth smiled. It was his smile that had first warned Herlas that this man was... unusual. An old woman he had known when he was a child, a servant in his family's house, had once described such a smile as 'someone who's sharing a joke with seven devils, and so full of himself he doesn't believe anyone will catch him out'. Did Korneth honestly think everyone was too stupid to figure out that he was up to no good? Or did he just not care? Herlas heard Crystal Fireblade catch her breath sharply beside him. She saw it, too, so he wasn't just imagining things. "Perhaps it's just as well," Korneth said. "Let people once realize that the king--who has no heir--is no longer fit to rule, and they will look with more favor on a new dynasty." He raised a finger, and two men clad all in black, one in a nobleman's silk and velvet, the other in the plainest of plebian garb, drew near. Assassins. "A new dynasty that is prepared to maintain itself and rule with a firm hand and a sharp blade. It will be like... the old days." He smiled again and spurred his horse forward, but the assassins stayed behind. Istoreth, Skaithvarn: Whatever spell was on the city of Istoreth to make it perfect and beautiful did not extend to the waterfront. It was simply a working waterfront. Prosperous, busy, noisy with the shouts of venders and the cries of gulls, odorous with the stink of ancient fish. The gladiators could see vessels that hailed from ports all around the glacier-fed lake that was the Trier Sea. Gissanniah began to count them off in her mind, dragonheaded ships from Snowbound, Karnhorn ships with two or three banks of slave rowers, white-sailed Andorian ships, intricately painted hulls of the elves of Ardivent, so many more, as a way to avoid looking at the blot of darkness anchored in the center of the harbor. It was the shape of a ship, as large as any other there, dead black so that it drank any light that fell on it. A tall mast rose from the center but seemed too slender to support sails against any earthly wind. No oars were visible. All the normal ships appeared to be shrinking away from it toward the edges of the harbor. "That is your task," the Istorene High Magician said, nodding toward the Black Ship. The gladiators noted that he didn't look directly at it. "We want that gone from our harbor, gone from our waters entirely. Make it so. If you can." Senator Sedalia took a deep breath, paused for a moment, and then said, "It's a challenge, no doubt about it. We'll do what we can." Gissanniah just restrained herself from hitting him. What could they do? What could gladiatorial skills or political savvy do against that blot on the Trier? Sedalia turned to the mage. "Tell us what you know of this ship," he said. "Since you sought demons rather than marines to rid yourself of it, I presume it's magical in nature?" "Magical, and of the darkest nature. Demonic, almost certainly. It comes from Kurukar, where the accursed kaliv has opened the Darkest Door." Sedalia nodded. "We have heard rumors and unconfirmed reports of the kaliv's activities," he admitted. "We get little news out of Aradi now, but there is a hint that a Chaos Lord there is considering the use of his special skills against Kurukar." "No!" The Istorene faced them squarely, which he had not done till now, and his eyes were full of lightning while sparks leapt from the points of his mustache. "There must be no unleashing of Chaos magic against the demonic forces, or the whole world might be unmade!" + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #14 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Andor: Herlas glanced at the assassins out of the corner of his eye. The one in silk had a slight smile; the one who looked like a peasant had no expression at all. Both were staying close, right on the edge of earshot distance, as in "maybe they can hear what we say, and maybe not." If he had been Korneth, the Zensovian would have picked the assassins with the best hearing he could find and had them at just such a distance. After all, they'd been trained to double as spies in the old days when the kings of Andoria had protected their guild. Which meant no talking private with Fireblade during the rest of this parade. And would the assassins keep with them afterward? If Korneth's trust in him had fallen that far, Herlas figured it might be time to put his ultimate contingency plan into motion. He slid his glance toward the redhaired Lady Knight riding beside him. She raised an eyebrow, then glanced toward the assassins and shook her head slightly. What, did she think him such a fool that he would talk where he could be overheard? He reined in annoyance. He'd been a big enough fool over this business already, why might she not fear he would continue so? Why was it the only interesting women he'd met could see that he was a fool and a blackguard? It was enough to depress a man. The parade which had seemed endless looped back to the palace and ended. Lady Knight Fireblade made another tiny, cryptic gesture and just... rode off! What did she mean by it? Why did he care? He'd been playing out a lone hand so far, why did he suddenly yearn for an ally? Herlas shook his head, hoping to shake out strange notions, glanced at his assassin shadows, and rode toward the lodge on the edge of the palace grounds where he was currently living. ***** *** ***** *** ***** Crystal Fireblade knocked on his door just after full dark. The front door, and she knocked openly. Herlas looked past her gray-cloaked form into the rainy darkness, then nodded. "Did anyone follow you?" "I think not, though it's difficult to be sure." She shrugged out of the cloak which had concealed her mail, the hood that had covered her flame-colored hair. "We must take action of some kind, and soon," she said. "You know that." At his nod, she went on, "Have you thought what kind of action? The lost king must be replaced, and this Korneth of Sengir must be eliminated. But who the first, how the second?" "Alonj of Fratsfa for the first," Herlas said. He indicated two chairs drawn up to his fire, welcome on this wet night. The Convincians will accept him as a legitimate ruler, the Fratsfan will accept no one else. The Baron of Ardivent is too far away, and nobody knows which way the Clanholds of the Aruaki will go these days, they are too disorganized within themselves." "Raltumas?" "Not of immediate concern. The defection of Aradi has weakened them, and they were never as coherent as other parts of the League." "And what of Korneth? He will block any attempt to put Alonj--or anyone other than himself--on the throne. It is my feeling that he will be hard to dispose of." "Mine, too. There were those assassins early today, a rather pointed message, I thought." "Yes. Where are they now?" Fireblade glanced around as though she expected to see them in some corner of the room. Herlas smiled. "Posted in quite likely places, watching intently and seeing... very little. Bats or whatever moves around at night. If those two are all Korneth set to watching me, as I hope because he can't have many at his call yet, then we are safe enough for now. Later... probably not." Crystal Fireblade frowned. "Should we leave Andor, get to where he can't spy on us, do you think?" The magician got up and began pacing, tapping his fingers against each other behind his back. After several minutes, he said, "No, I don't think so. True, we're at risk of spying if we remain here, but once we move away from the center of the action, we would need to find spies ourselves or lose touch with what's going on. My feeling is that we need to know what is going on here, at least until we've dealt with Korneth." "I take your point, but what about Alonj of Fratsfa? Not only do we--or someone--have to tell him that he must take over governance of the League, he must be protected. Korneth is surely as able as we are to see that Alonj is the obvious replacement for the vanished king." Herlas barked a laugh. "Have you met Alonj's Adantri wife? I have, and I would not want to be an assassin trying to get past her!" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 300): ZIP of Z GLADIATORS (Mr. Zee, mgr.) SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of ARUAK CITY brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, KRILL CAVALRY, since ANIMAL FARM took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps up, COLORIFIC, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4 in the rankings? TECHNO 8 turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 4th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch ANIMAL FARM's heads swell from their 4-0-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see SEPHIROTH win a fight and gain 24 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, SEPHIROTH beat DICKY V GOES POSTAL and DICKY V GOES POSTAL lost 30 points. You're breakin' my heart. Due to absence, and inability to defend the throne, ONEWOLF has lost the Title of Duelmaster. Start setting that alarm earlier! And it's out with the old, in with the new, as ECRU ELEPHANT takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Bulldog Inn, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From ARUAK CITY's trash dumps? Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. What's the big D? DEADMAN'S HAND was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was BULLDOGS. Ha ha ha ha! HORSEFLY was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. JON FLUTE was challenged by one of PATRONAS VERITAS' warriors this turn, with ERITHE ENDIREDRE having a lead of 19 points going into the fight. And sorry to say, ERITHE ENDIREDRE beat JON FLUTE, leaving a bad feeling with the crowd. I think exploitive snob is the term I'm looking for. Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's see if anyone's dead or dying. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one. What does the ARUAK CITY arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of ARUAK CITY. I feel much better now. I see the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ECRU ELEPHANT 7005 15 4 0 115 ANIMAL FARM (510) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -ONEWOLF 5505 38 9 0 171 WOLFBROTHERS (506) -LITTLE CROW 6007 17 2 1 136 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) -LILAC LIZARD 6964 20 3 0 115 ANIMAL FARM (510) -SHOTGUN GANDHI 6760 7 0 0 109 ARMED & GREGARIOUS (580) -GALLOWS POLE 5496 20 10 0 108 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) FILET MIGNON 6981 21 8 1 104 BULLDOGS (157) -WINTER DAWN 7014 8 0 0 104 WOLFBROTHERS (506) SILVER SNAIL 7006 14 5 1 100 ANIMAL FARM (510) HORSEFLY 6860 18 31 0 97 KRILL CAVALRY (374) SEPHIROTH 5854 8 3 1 97 NIGHT'S GUARDIANS (474) KEEPER OF SECRETS 5814 9 3 0 96 NIGHT'S GUARDIANS (474) ERITHE ENDIREDRE 5141 10 7 0 94 PATRONAS VERITAS (470) -TALKHIS 5143 10 4 1 91 PATRONAS VERITAS (470) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BARK 6915 22 18 0 84 BULLDOGS (157) SNOW WHITE 7010 13 6 0 77 COLORIFIC (511) DICKY V GOES POSTAL 6940 4 5 1 77 ARMED & GREGARIOUS (580) JON FLUTE 6922 14 28 0 70 KRILL CAVALRY (374) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME THUNK 7090 9 5 2 66 TECHNO 8 (609) GRAVETWIST 5253 5 5 0 65 ETHEREAL ANGELS (481) -BROWN NOSE 6939 5 1 0 63 COLORIFIC (511) -SLAG 6947 8 3 0 59 NEVERWAKE (508) BUTTER BURRO 7062 9 1 0 57 ANIMAL FARM (510) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -SARAH BELLUM 7003 8 9 0 56 HELL'S BELLES (68) -WOEBRINGER 7049 4 0 1 56 NEVERWAKE (508) GREEN THUMB 6830 12 10 0 51 COLORIFIC (511) PUPPY LOVE 7026 11 9 0 50 BULLDOGS (157) -CAT RIO 597 9 21 1 49 HELL'S BELLES (68) -CEREAL KILLER 642 8 5 0 49 DIRE FATE (42) MOCHA MONKEY 7107 6 3 0 48 ANIMAL FARM (510) -HARLIN DOBBS 5486 10 9 1 47 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) -YELLOW FEVER 6978 7 1 0 47 COLORIFIC (511) TRIPPER 7093 6 8 0 46 TECHNO 8 (609) CINDERELLA MAN 7102 6 6 0 44 IMMORTALS (85) -PIGSTICKER 7035 4 0 0 42 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) -BEAN SIDHE 7130 4 0 0 40 NIGHT'S GUARDIANS (474) -ANGELFIRE 7095 3 1 0 38 NEVERWAKE (508) -SACRED WARS SMURF 776 5 7 0 37 DIRE FATE (42) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TOM SAWYER 7101 6 6 2 33 IMMORTALS (85) -BOWIE-KNIFE 7071 2 2 0 28 DEADMAN'S HAND (505) WORKING MAN 7087 6 8 0 26 IMMORTALS (85) SONG OF SUMMER 7119 5 4 0 25 KRILL CAVALRY (374) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -THE LARANI NYMPH 777 6 4 0 22 DIRE FATE (42) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TWOFLOWER 7120 4 4 0 22 TECHNO 8 (609) -ROXANNA DEHEDD 7097 2 6 1 22 HELL'S BELLES (68) STABLEBOY 7118 3 6 0 15 KRILL CAVALRY (374) TINK 7164 1 0 0 15 TECHNO 8 (609) WOODROW BILLIT 7151 2 0 0 13 KRILL CAVALRY (374) PENNYWISE 7129 1 5 0 12 NIGHT'S GUARDIANS (474) TONK 7163 1 0 0 11 TECHNO 8 (609) -AGRAEDUS 6721 0 1 0 11 PHILANTHROPISTS (576) TORRID TIGER 7141 1 0 0 10 FURRY FURY (611) PUP TENT 7134 1 3 1 9 BULLDOGS (157) MIXED BREED 7135 1 3 1 7 BULLDOGS (157) WORRIED WALLABY 7139 1 0 0 5 FURRY FURY (611) THE ANALOG KID 7165 0 1 0 1 IMMORTALS (85) SHY MEERKAT 7140 0 1 0 1 FURRY FURY (611) DRAYTON FLASHSTONE 7166 0 1 0 1 IMMORTALS (85) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. Me critters needs a drink! -- Mino Gravetwist -- And to think I almost planted you? -- Green Thumb, Proud Colorific Winter Dawn -- I think you cheated! Did you use the Evil Queen's looking glass? I'm going to tell the Seven Dwarves and Prince Charming and everybody! Humpf! -- Snow White, Proud Colorific Colorifics -- NO losses! Or else! -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager Pup Tent -- Most unkind to smack a girl in the head. I will miss Teri, she was one of those "If she survives, she will be good" fighters. PR: 7/5/9/17/15/14/17 -- Technogeek Stableboy -- Must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. -- Twoflower Puppy Love -- Like wow, you're all boring and stuff. -- Tripper Sephiroth -- It was worth a shot. -- Thunk Consortium -- FOUR separate whines from you about one single retaliation challenge? That's just sad, even for an Andorian. And it's also incentive to continue doing just that. And here I'd pretty much decided to start playing nice until I saw this turn's personals. -- Ichabod Onewolf -- I think I may want a rematch in five or so turns if you're still around then. -- Keeper of Secrets Thunk -- Well, THAT turn was a waste for the both of us. -- Sephiroth Technogeek -- I think you should look into better medical care for your warriors. That's a rough three turns, especially in the "Heart and Soul of Andoria". -- Ichabod Shotgun Gandhi -- Well, fry me for a roasted pigeon. It's been a while since we last saw you in front of us, and I wouldn't have minded if it was a while longer. Still, Jorja says "we might as well be polite." So, eh, ouch, good fight, I guess. -- Horsefly, being polite with a notable effort Erithe Endiredre -- Oh, it's you. Why am I not thrilled? Because I figure I'm going to lose, and behold, I lost. Even the prettiest little lady is less than welcome if she runs a sword into my gizzard and rapes me of a lot of skills I could have used myself. Should have used myself, come to that, but I wasn't fast enough off the mark, which was, well, Bad of me. But I was tired. There are days like that. -- Jon Flute Pennywise -- I've known some people with that quality or capacity. Unfortunately, it so often goes with the reciprocal of "pound-foolish." Maddening when you see it in others, embarrassing when you ultimately recognize it in yourself. Still, sufficient unto some other day is the error thereof, right? -- Song of Summer Twoflower -- Look, the horses are camera-shy, okay? Live with it. Go photograph camels or something. They have no self-respect. -- Stableboy Agraedus -- I will take this opening win as a good omen for my career, the gods know I'll need it. Too bad you get to take a loss as the opening omen for yours, but think positively! Nowhere to go but up, right? -- Woodrow Billit Mixed Breed -- Perhaps you'll feel more tuneful when the moon is full? -- Song of Summer P.S. Though summer is about gone now. That's what it means when the apples come ripe, yes? Very tasty, too. Ecru Elephant -- Of course not. The terms of my contract forbid it. -- Tromat Ironshoe of Khalhums Kennelworth -- Aw shucks, now you found out my secret. How about doggie bag or the mad yelper. -- Dartor Thanks for all the congrats to Sly. He was fun to run. -- Dartor 8 July 2008 ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** ALLIANCES OF ALASTARI ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** *TURF WAR VI RULES* Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns) Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War!
