"Here?" Fern sat on one of the benches and looked up at him. "Of course, here. Surely you didn't expect the wife of Emperor Alonj to come to the Flower Shoppe? The rumors that would start--! No, no, trust me, this is better." Lenpro shrugged. She was probably right, but he didn't feel like admitting it just then. He looked around at what he could see of the park. Lawns, flower beds, trees and statuary set with equal care. No people on this chilly morning. No place for eavesdroppers and spies to hide. Okay, it was as safe a place to meet as they were likely to find. It was also early, and cold, and damp, and the bench was not the most comfortable he'd ever sat on. Movement caught his eye. A woman alone--no, not alone. There was an older woman with her, and two men, but they kept back a little. Chaperon and guards. The woman was Fratsfan to all appearance, tall, blonde, and regal-looking. Coming toward them. As she neared, he saw that she had slanted eyes, not in the elven fashion that some Fratsfans did, but after the Adantri style. And if he needed further confirmation of her identity, she wore a sword as though she knew what to do with it. She strode over to the benches, nodded once to Lady Fern, and faced Lenpro, saying nothing but raising one eyebrow in question. Lenpro blinked, wondering how to start the discussion. He hadn't expected it to be this hard, and she wasn't being helpful here. He took a deep breath. "We need Emperor Alonj to take over as head of the Andorian League," he said. "No." "The king is dead, no heirs, and Alonj is best placed to step into the role." "No! Alonj has no desire to govern more than he does now, and this is work enough for any man. Find someone else." "I truly believe there isn't anyone else who could do the job," Lady Fern said. "Only Emperor Alonj has the legitimacy to avoid a civil war." The Empress Kitiara sighed and sat on the other bench. "I know. We can see the situation as well as you do, I suppose, and we've talked about this. And about personal choices and public duties." "Then you can see the need," Lenpro said. "Without a firm and accepted hand on the reins, the Andorian League will fall apart." Kitiara looked at him for a moment. "Is this bad?" Lenpro stared, shocked at the question. This woman was from a highly placed family in the Empire of Lirith Kai, and she could question the value of a unified government? "Of course it's bad! Without the League--" He groped for words. "War between Convincia and the Clanholds?" she suggested. "Raltuman piractical raids on Ardiventi shipping?" "War between the Delarquans and the Karnhorns, fought across Andorian lands," Lenpro countered. "It's the united strength of the Laague that keeps them from encroaching." "I could argue that," she said, "at least about the Delarquans. But I suppose this isn't the time for it." Lenpro bit back the argument he'd been about to start and nodded. Later for that. "You said you'd discussed this with Emperor Alonj. What conclusions did you come to? What are you--is he--prepared to do?" "For now, probably about what you want him to do," she said, grimacing. "Take over central authority in the Andorian lands for the duration of this emergency. And yes, we know that 'this emergency' is actually a complicated situation with may different problems running together. And immediately organize responsible people to start considering ways to resolve the individual problems once things are stabilized." "If he remains king of the League, that will solve the--" "No, it won't. A king over the Andorian League is just a bandage over too many cracks in the structure. It needs to be FIXED," she said. "What cracks?" "Divisions and distrust between humans, elves, and Aruaki, for a start. The running sore of the Assassins' Guild. The drain of too many of the best young people through the arenas into death or the Isle--" "That one is beyond our fixing," Lady Fern said. "As we've discussed before: once the Gladiatorial Commission enters a country, it does not leave. Let's focus on things we CAN change." "Andor," Lenpro said. "That's where we have to start." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 301): ROCK GLAS HUT FUN of ORCISH IDIOMS (Slugbait, mgr.) SPY REPORT You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf Modeen. I return to ARUAK CITY once again! Woof! ANIMAL FARM were a bunch of dogs after TECHNO 8 got through with 'em! 4th ain't so sweet as 1st! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! TECHNO 8 is now ranked 1st with a 2-3-0 turn. What's with THE ANALOG KID? He actually beat PUBLIC ENEMIES' GODFATHER OF DIXIE, and walked away with 18 more points from the fight. Major screwup at KRILL CAVALRY. WOODROW BILLIT lost 10 points to MIXED BREED. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe WOODROW BILLIT will provide more easy wins... NIGHT'S GUARDIANS' hatred of WOLFBROTHERS surfaced again as SEPHIROTH challenged ARUAK CITY's top dog. Try as he might, SEPHIROTH wasn't good enough at persuading ONEWOLF to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough! Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... The most avoided team was ANIMAL FARM. In my day, no team with a 1136-642-38 would scare me off! What's the problem, NIGHT'S GUARDIANS? What do people see in LILAC LIZARD? Hers 21-4-0? ANIMAL FARM ain't talkin', but she's got 91 points. Keep challenging up 45 points, DICKY V GOES POSTAL, and I won't have to write about you much longer. LILAC LIZARD always accepts those kind of challenges... DICKY V GOES POSTAL did pretty good last week in beating LILAC LIZARD to get 32 points. Why did LILAC LIZARD lose, you ask? Simple: she wasn't good enough. There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters to walk away, or not? How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to go... Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf. Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. I come to you with a public service announcement. Some of you may already be aware of Shadowspire and some of you may not realize what exactly you're missing. This isn't your average arena. This is Shadowspire, a large and very active arena where role-playing is encouraged; many managers are active both the personal ads and the D2 forums online, and excitement reigns with many grudge matches from turn to turn. If you haven't checked arena 81 out, I urge you to do so. After returning to the game almost 2 years ago, after a 15+ year hiatus, I was looking to try and recapture the magic of the game I remembered from my youth. After finding my first two arenas lacking, I almost quit the game again. That was until I found the newly opening Shadowspire. It was here that I found the magic and excitement that I remembered. I truly love this arena and am sure you will too if given a chance. Rookie or experienced veteran, it matters not. Both have come together here to successfully make an arena with plenty of competition to challenge the vets, yet with the no tourney format, friendly enough for the novices to get their feet wet and learn (or relearn) the game. When I say that even novices can find success here, I speak from personal experience. I still consider myself a "newbie" to the game but have found plenty of success with my first two Duelmaster titles and two ADM graduates to date. I encourage you all to check out the D2 forums at www.reality.com/duel2/ and look over both the Shadowspire newsletter and DM-81 forum section at the bottom of the page. The forum banter and personal ads help to clearly show that the "old school" feel for the game is still alive and well here in Shadowspire. Also, if you're a former Shadowspire manager who is currently away, I encourage you to return and help continue to make this one of the most entertaining arenas in the game today! I hope to see many new faces in the near future and am excited to see the return of some of the old faces whom have been away! Sincerely, Vanek 8 October 2008 After 17 long years they are finally cutting the Cowboy loose. Red & stinging, my hand is now sufficiently slapped. The state of Texas' boot print is stamped across my ***... Uncle Damnit! I am only 34 (think about it...) so plenty of time to reinvent myself...prospects are great. After wading through the culture shock I hope to be amongst you soon, dishing out paper "w"itch slaps and taking my share of them from you. See you @ the Winter face '09? Only time will tell. Good luck. -- CFH/Rat Salad, 5 Below Zero and an assortment of other underachieving thugs. P.S.
