Fratsfa:
It was one of the worst parts of the city. Calling it a slum would be an insult
to honest slums elsewhere. Lenpro's first instinct was to hustle the Flower Girl out
of there. How did she even come to know such an area? He glanced sideways at
Sizzling Sunflower. It might be better to ask how she could help finding it.
Sunflower was leaning close to a man, talking earnestly. Persuasively, because
his firm gestures of refusal were becoming uncertain. Very persuasively, because she
finally took him by the arm and brought him over to Lenpro. As he watched them
approach, the manager was impressed with how carefully the stranger did not attempt
to take any liberties with the Flower Girl.
"This is Two-finger Tom," Sunflower said. "He saw what happened, and he'll tell
you what he saw."
"Yeah, well." The man squinted at him, looked around carefully, leaned closer.
His breath was bad. "I seen some of those cat men grab a couple of decent girls.
Dragged 'em off, they did. I reckon that has something bad in mind."
Lenpro resisted the urge to step away from this case of walking halitosis. "We
can't go by what you 'reckon'," he said. "What do you know for sure?"
"That a coupla those Aruaki--" Two-finger Tom spat, narrowly missing Lenpro's
boot, "they grabbed a coupla human girls and dragged them off. Down that way," he
added, jerking his head toward the river. "No telling what they might do to the
girls. Cats. You can't trust 'em."
"Then we'd best go look for the girls." Lenpro glanced around at the crowd that
had gathered. "A group of us are going to look for the girls who were taken," he
said. "A disciplined group, not a mob."
Someone in the back of the crowd laughed. "Sounds to me like a mob--a LYNCH
mob--is what's needed here."
"Yeah, we can start by killing all those beast-men! More beast than man, THEY
are!" someone else yelled. Also someone in the back that Lenpro couldn't see. The
crowd stirred and muttered, some in agreement and some not, but the agreement seemed
to have the upper edge.
"No killing out of hand!" Lenpro shouted back. "That isn't the Andorian Way--"
The first man took up the argument again, his voice dripping contempt. "The
'Andorian Way' is just a pretty toy the elves and beast-lovers came up with to hobble
us honest humans! That 'Andorian Way' isn't worth spit!"
The crowd stirred and muttered. A lot of the mutters seemed to be in agreement
with the hecklers.
"Show yourself!" Lenpro demanded. "If you have courage in your convictions,
step forward and show your face."
The crowd stirred and a man came forward. Was thrust forward, perhaps against
his will, by the people around and behind him. He looked defiant, truculent.
He looked Karnhorn. Lenpro knew that racial stereotyping was often unfair, but
he needed to discredit this man before the crowd became a mob. "Is this the Karnhorn
party line you've been handing out?" he asked, keeping his voice calm, idly curious.
"It sounds like it, and you look like it."
More stirring in the crowd, mutters, a wave of suspicion. If there was a
lynching, this man might be first, and he could see it. "I'm no Kjarran-lover," he
growled. "Don't go putting words in my mouth!"
"Somebody's been putting them there," Lenpro said. "Somebody with his
headquarters in Zuwayza, I'd guess." He held up a hand and stopped the surge of the
crowd--for now, at least. "You didn't want us to wait for facts before lynching
Aruaki, why should we wait for facts before lynching you?"
"I'm not--!"
Someone threw a stone, Lenpro couldn't see who. It arched up over the heads of
the crowd and struck the possible Karnhorn on the side of the head so that he
staggered and fell, blood running down the side of his face.
The crowd roared and became a mob, maddened and excited by the blood, by having
a target for hostility that had been festering. Lenpro cursed and pushed Sunflower
back. He wanted the heckler for questioning, but he wasn't going to get the man.
The mob would see to that--and maybe that mob had been triggered by his accomplice
who didn't want questions asked. He wanted to go in search of the missing girls, but
he suspected that wasn't going to happen right away, either. The witness, informant,
that Sizzling Sunflower had found was in the thick of the mob.

SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon ARUAK CITY,
for I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! Nothing works for a team like victory (How's
that for a perceptive observation?) as COFFEE WARS can attest... ARMED & GREGARIOUS
had cause to celebrate, after DICKY V GOES POSTAL got 18 points by beating FILET
MIGNON. FILET MIGNON certainly had a baffled expression on hers face, after losing
to DICKY V GOES POSTAL and losing 10 points in the process! A certain someone saw
ONEWOLF at The Bulldog Inn with the shakes, and now he fails to show up to defend his
throne. What a pathetic slob! Now I can't insult DICKY V GOES POSTAL, as he has
gloriously dueled to the top. Oh great new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on
too thick) So who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering
milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
So much to report, so little time! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the
mountaintops, so stand the warriors of NEVERWAKE, alone and unchallenged. Like a pup
with its tail between its legs, COLORIFIC scurried away from NEVERWAKE. Oh, the
shame! Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and CINDERELLA MAN is it right now.
Most challenged warrior. Isn't IMMORTALS proud! BROWN NOSE found himself challenged
by a warrior 18 below: TWILL. TWILL of TECHNO 8 kept hers wits as she lost to BROWN
NOSE.
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have
fallen into an unconscious stupor.
All good things must come to an end. More important duties call me. ARUAK
CITY, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Bulldog Inn.
'Til next time-- Novgorodny Vir

It was good seeing both Doc Steele and Technogeek at The Face in Tempe. --

A BIG BIG salute to Shotgun Gandhi--the Champion Class slasher TC at The Face. Well

Jon Flute -- That was bad. I hope we don't do it again next time. Go eat some Oleo!
-- Butter Burro
Kung Fu master -- Your style is no match for us offensive Lizards! (wink) I was
proud of that win! -- Lilac Lizard
M. Chardinee -- What Filet Mignon said. -- Mocha Monkey
Butter Burro -- Hmm. Were you aware that if a flour tortilla is fried in butter as
though for a quesadilla, but then sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar instead of grated
cheese, it's nearly a sopapilla, in so far as you can do that without deep fat
frying. Slide it onto a plate and sprinkle with powdered sugar and there you are. --
Jon Flute
P.S. Which is basically a way of not acknowledging the loss.
Hmm, I may have to try that.
Gray Matter -- Life always looks worse in grayscale. -- Song of Summer
Raging Bull -- Darned if I know what turned that trick, but I like it. Now if I can
figure out how to repeat it. Hmm. -- Woodrow Billit
Cinderella Man -- What I figure is, you need to clean some more hearths first. --
Stableboy
Tonk -- Ouch. That was my head you were using for a gong or whatever. -- Irvin Flete
P.S. And no, it is not actually hollow, it just sounds that way.
Pup Tent and Mixed Breed -- Well, why not? You two were annoying the horses, and I
always get blamed for that. -- Stableboy
Raging Bull -- You going to try again on the theory that Third Time's the Charm? --
Woodrow Billit
Our congratulations to Onewolf. -- Jorja and the Krill Cavalry
