Fratsfa:

"So," Lenpro said, "we have two basic--linked but distinct--problems. The
chaotic magic, and the civil war. Is that correct?"
Lady Fern nodded. "Over-simplified, but correct."
"And Fandil is going to have to be the one to deal with the magic--"
"I have heard of the mage Fandil, of course," Herlas cut in, "and I would guess
he has as good a chance as any and better than most, but... will he do it? Will he
do it in TIME?"
"He's working on it now," Fern said.
The younger man blinked and looked around the room blankly. "Already? But how
did he know?"
Fern laughed. "That is a question I prefer not to ask my brother, along with
'what are you doing?'. It is sufficient to know that he is working on it." She sat
even straighter in her chair. "Your obvious intention, Lenpro, is to state that we
here in this room must begin to deal with the civil war side of the problem."
"Preferably before it becomes an outright civil war," the manager from Iaye
said. "At the moment, it's more of a palace coup. If we can stop it now--"
"Ah..." Herlas shifted a little in his chair, "that may not be possible.
Cutting it off before it becomes an outright civil war. The tensions and irritations
that Korneth has been working with are real enough, and by now they're probably--
almost certainly--inflamed enough that bringing them to a halt short of violence
is.... I don't think it can be done."
"Just what, exactly, 'tensions and irritations' are you talking about?" Lenpro
scowled. "The Andorian League is probably the best place to live in all Alastari--"
Herlas sighed, looked at Outcast Orchid almost helplessly for a moment, then
squared his shoulders. Definitely a 'you aren't going to like this' gesture.
"Korneth may have come out of nowhere I've ever heard of, but he gained local support
quickly. Very quickly--and more than you might think, especially in Convincia. The
Great Thane has been... cool, but he hasn't made any effort to stop the drift of many
of his lesser thanes into the..." a vague gesture, of one groping for words, "the
isolationist camp, I might call it. And at a lower level still, among the ordinary
people, farmers, small merchants, the foundation of Convincian strength, there's a
lot of resentment against, well, the Aruaki first. They don't like how powerful the
Aruaki are in the League. They don't like Aruaki wanting to marry their sons and
daughters and 'taint' their own family bloodlines. They just--"
"They don't like the Aruaki," Fern finished. She looked thoughtful and glanced
at Lenpro. "What has been your experience on Iaye? It is officially under the
government of the Aruaki Clanhold, is it not?"
"Officially... sort of." Lenpro got up and started walking around the room,
finding an outlet for his own irritation in the activity. With obvious reluctance,
he said, "We don't see many of the Aruaki on Iaye, and if some official were to come
and try to give orders... they probably wouldn't be well received. But that's a long
way from civil war!"
"It's the soil that a civil war can grow in," Fern said. "The werefolk are not
welcomed with open arms here in Fratsfa, either, especially since the plague. Some
of the plague-driven shape-changes and the associated personality shifts were," she
sighed, "frankly disastrous. But it isn't the fault of the Aruaki themselves!"
"It doesn't need to be," Sizzling Sunflower cut in. "It isn't the fault of the
river if someone's house gets flooded, but no intelligent person builds too close to
it even so."
"Yes, exactly so." Herlas nodded. "Even people who aren't hostile to the
Aruaki have taken to avoiding them--"
"We don't see it in the arenas," Lenpro said.
"Yes, well, they're avoiding the gladiators, too, I bet," Orchid said. "Nobody
was giving gladiators the benefit of the doubt up in Andor just recently."
"There's also hostility toward gladiators," Herlas admitted. "Many people see
them as tools of the Grey Wand, which they fear outright. And, again, they resent
the effect of the arenas on their sons and daughters. That it draws them away from
what their parents consider the proper life and duties--"
     "Immortality--"
"A lot of jealousy, huh?" Orchid asked.
Herlas nodded again. "A lot of people have trouble accepting the typical elvish
lifespan, but at least elves can be killed. Add in the guarantee of resurrection...
jealousy, resentment, even religious outrage. There was a lot of dissatisfaction
that Korneth could strike a match to."
"It's all well and good to SAY these things," Orchid growled, taking her turn to
stamp up and down the room. "But what can we DO about them? The Aruaki aren't going
to go away. The arenas aren't going to go away. The elves, and the Grey Wand,
aren't going to go away. All this stuff you're SAYING isn't telling us what we can
DO."
Herlas smiled, though there was little amusement in the expression. "Korneth's
solution is to kill or 'cast out' the Aruaki--send them back to Ratan, apparently.
Get rid of the arena system, kill Lord Protectors whenever they turn up and destroy
the bodies so that they can't be resurrected, and direct the energies of the
remaining Andorians toward a war with the Karnhorn Empire."
"Scapegoats," Lady Fern said. Her expression suggested that if she wasn't a
lady, she'd spit on the floor.
"Cut off Korneth's legitimacy by providing a ruler that all can accept as--"
"But can 'all' accept Alonj?" Orchid asked.
"As an alternative to a civil war, yes, I think so. If we get the message on
that out before emotions become so inflamed that nobody wants a reasonable
alternative to civil war. But these irritations... they won't go away, because they
do have a real foundation," Lenpro nodded acknowledgement at the Zensovian mage, "but
they've become exaggerated. Inflamed," he repeated, liking the word.
"So we need anti-inflammatories." Fern nodded. "It won't be easy, but--"
"Maybe if the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors help out people, all kinds of
people--the ordinary ones you were talking about," Sunflower began.
"No." Fern and Lenpro spoke together, and immediately. Lenpro gestured for his
sister to continue. "If we add the burden of gratitude to the resentments already
festering, it will make things worse. No, better if we find some way for the
ordinary mortal human Andorians to help out the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors, that
might do better."
Sizzling Sunflower looked dubious, but she shrugged and sat back, accepting her
manager's perception as being wiser than her own. "How, then?"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Hi there, all, it is your shady Shy Meerkat. Shady? you ask. Well I am sitting
out until the big tourney this spring. All those death threats had me running and
readying all my other Meerkat clan. We stick together, you know. Can never be too
careful with some of those crazy predators out there.
Anyway, Green Thumb, I would say well fought, but, you know, standing there
getting stuck like a pig is not very similar to fighting. You were a great DM, mind
you, and I suspect you may return this turn to take the throne. Keep your head up,
Mr Thumb.
As for Grimm. I told him you were coming, but he didn't seem to really listen to
me. I swear his mind is elsewhere these days.
Thanks, Kennelworth, though, Grimm will be away from late July to Oct. Now, I
am not sure if he means he will or won't be at the face. He will let you know. Till
my next time on the throne. Be well, brothers of Aruak.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail ARUAK CITY! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for
your deeds. And let's see, GRAY MATTER fought TOM SAWYER and gained 21 points and
contributed to COLORIFIC's 4-1-0. TOM SAWYER has lost to GRAY MATTER, falling 23
points, while helping make IMMORTALS a 0-5-0 turn. Due to his absence and inability
to defend the throne, SHY MEERKAT has lost the title of Duelmaster. We should ask
GREEN THUMB about the thrill of victory, and what being the new Duelmaster does for a
warrior, it's now the one to ask. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from
unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew. Talk about
gristle!
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. IMMORTALS has cause to stand tall, as
they were ARUAK CITY's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to
beat. And guess who avoided IMMORTALS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was
ANIMAL FARM. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that GREEN THUMB from
COLORIFIC was ARUAK CITY's most challenged warrior this turn.
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their
enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Always good to rest in ARUAK CITY, but never good to wear out my welcome.
Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in ARUAK CITY again, farewell--
Alarond the Scribe

Congratulations to Shy Meerkat, the new Duelmaster of Aruak City. DMs drink free at
The Bulldog Inn. -- Kennelworth, Proprietor
P.S. I am sure Shy Meerkat and Grimm will compose far better DM Columns than did
Green Thumb and PPE.

Tom, Tom, poor old Stableboy? He was such a nice guy and a fine warrior. I surely
wish you hadn't killed him, as he will be missed. But I am sure that accidents do
happen. Life in the arena is very tenuous at best. -- Kennelworth

Cautionary Orc -- When one has a name like mine, one knows caution. It surely paid
when you came knocking. -- Dog Meat

Harline Flete -- Well, you didn't think I would give that one away, did you? --
Dogmatic

Dangerous Criminal -- Well, shucks, that was fun. Will you throw the stick for me
more some time soon? Sorry you got so tired so quickly. I will see if I can get
Kennelworth to bring you a dog biscuit. -- Hound

Still awaiting the appearance of my newest Bulldog. Hopefully Udder will appear next
round. -- Kennelworth

Tirla Dancer -- You twit! That was MY win, and you stole it away. You are a, a,
a.... Red Head, Proud Colorific

Milo Pickering -- I was passionate about the challenge and even more passionate about
the win. Yes! -- Purple Passion, Proud Colorific

What?! A twinkle-toed meerkat? I've been cheated! Cheated! Why, that little
pipsqueak cheated me out of the throne! I protest! -- Green Thumb, Proud Colorific

Colorifics -- I am terribly embarrassed about your performance of late. It is
despicable. A 1-2 this round? Losing the throne? A 6-4 these past three turns?
You all disgust me! Losers! I want change NOW, or else. -- Purple People Eater,
Proud Colorific Manager

Irvin Flete -- That was fun. I didn't have much trouble figuring you out, because
you remind me of the boss's pet cat, Irvin. -- Claret Crawdad

Userous Merchant -- I get really riled when jerks ramp up my interest. My stinger
comes out! -- Black Bee

Corvo Black -- I like BOTH my food and my drink. (burp!) -- Purple Pig

Ahoy, ye Shy Meerkat. Champeen! Aye. -- Mino

Commission -- I'm beginning to believe that you don't like me. I've sent in
personals the last 3 turns and not seen any printed and yes I did put the arena
number. -- Dartor

Jorja -- My condolences to Stalbeboy. He was a good warrior but Tom was too
bloodthirsty. Bloodfeud will be honored. -- Dartor

Kennelworth -- Tough luck with your fighter also. Cinderella Man was not looking for
the infirmary death but it happens too often with our teams. I guess that is why you
avoid so much. -- Dartor

Well, you guys convinced me to sit Meerkat. I am sure he would have done fine, but I
do like the skills I may pick up in the Champs. God knows WSs and Challengers don't
really go together. -- Grimm

So here comes my stable, now if they stop dying I would be happy. -- Grimm

I must appologize for lack of a DM column. I will do better when I come back. I
have just so many reasons to be shy. -- Meerkat

And yes Furry Fury is run by me. -- Grimm

Tom Sawyer -- Well, that's a bummer. And you really had to work at it, considering I
had a CN of 19. -- Ghost of Stableboy

Purple Pig -- I don't think purple ham would go well with green eggs. -- Corvo Black

Dogmatic -- I can't stand someone so rigid in their views. -- Harline Flete

Claret Crawdad -- Strong, but not a good vintage even so. A little harsh. -- Irvin
Flete

Red Head -- Temper is not your friend, unless you keep it on a tight rein. -- Tirla
Dancer

9 February 10
All -- I know you all thought the old Wiz that is Fiz went off to die somewhere.
Well, I didn't. Now I'm back to befuddle and frustrate you with my senseless
ramblings. I look forward to reconnecting with all my old friends and enemies alike.
-- Fizban the Famous
