                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

YES! I did it! I won my third DM Title and earned enough recognition points to
get out of here alive! Lord Protector Rose Rooster! Has a neat ring to it, doesn't
it? I think I will crow all day!
But before I start the unabashed crowing, let me summarize my fighting career
for you. I was born a 11-9-11-15-15-12-11 ambi slasher, with another 1 skill bonus
in initiative. Normal endurance and good damage were mine, as expected. I am
finishing with three adexes, in the offensives, of course. I learned at a mediocre
1.69 rate during the 20-8-1 arena record. No tournaments for me. I liked most of
the slashy weapons, and think that either the rose hatchet or the rose scimitar is my
favorite. (4-27-2 HA, 14-60-5 SC, 1-10-2 BS, O-5-5 other) I am sure Mino will let
you know my true faves when they are published.
Good luck to all in the upcoming Face-To Face tournament. I won't be there,
because I am OUTTA HERE! YAY!
          Rose Rooster, DMIII

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Say good-bye to COLORIFIC, as they are pushed from the coveted top
team spot by the NICK JR. stable. Coming up with a solid 3-2-0 outing, NICK JR. has
advanced 3 places in the rankings. THE HITCHHIKERS is no joke as it posted a 4-1-0
week advancing from 5th place to 4th place. Hey everybody, watch out for GREEN WITH
ENVY, who flew up 21 points in the rankings after mashing TUCK like a melon. Keep
your eye on this beast. And falling like a basher in the top ten was TUCK, who
dropped 11 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with GREEN WITH ENVY.
Unlike most arenas, ROSE ROOSTER managed to get his challenge off against the 19-41-0
CORVO BLACK. Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was
KRILL CAVALRY's CORVO BLACK, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by ROSE
ROOSTER. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at
that location.
Here is other news that is of note. Did you hear that THE HITCHHIKERS was most
avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of THE HITCHHIKERS'
warriors, I'm not surprised! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch COLORIFIC's act
in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from THE HITCHHIKERS.
Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, BERLAM FOOTE would be president.
Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. In a touching display by a
'touched' warrior, WOOF WOOF went after SMIMATSU, who was higher by 20 points. Well,
when the dust settled, WOOF WOOF was subdued by SMIMATSU.
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! Well, the arena is no place for slow learners (and
hopefully T.P.s) and ROSE ROOSTER demonstrated that very violently on CORVO BLACK's
body. Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper time is a very important
step on the road to Duelmaster.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. Its been
real, and its been fun, but it hasn't been real fun...-- The Unknown Spymaster

Nick Jr. -- Nice point gain! Kudos from the sad Bulldogs. -- Kennelworth

Maydee Quick -- That is twice. I don't like you. I don't want to match with you.
I'd rather race the ugly hare who lets me beat him. -- Tangerine Turtle

Berlam Foote -- That was fun and really worked out for me. -- Rose Rooster (crowing
unabashidly)

Avast, ye Rooster. Gratters 'n all. This'n ole pirate done bea proud 'o ye! Aye.
-- Mino

Blue Bulldog

That's what I'm talking about, Colorifics. A sweet 4-1. Only that imbicile Yellow
Belly lost. What are you Colorifics going to do to him for ruining our perfect
record? -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific Manager

Fruit E. Bowl -- That was an interesting and despicable intro letter you sent to the
Rapscallions. I think I'm going to like you! -- Purple People Eater, Proud Colorific
Manager

Ha ha ha, Animal Farm! Who's got the best win-loss record, now? Colorifics, that's
who! 66.8 to 66.0. My fine management led us to a 9-4 three turn record, while ugly
and incompetant Mino led you to a 5-3. WE ARE THE BEST! -- Purple People Eater,
Proud Colorific Manager

For those interested, Rose Rooster's faves were: SC, Mod/Vlo, Learns Decise. -- The
Animal Farm Digest Publisher

It IS very, very unusual, but I have "refused" the 3-10-18-3-13-9-14 recruit, and
somehow he ended up in The Dark Arena. (sigh) -- Kennelworth, Bulldogs

All -- Yes, we are back. Unfortunately, four of the members of the team oare of
adventuring. When I find them they will be back on the sands. -- Dartor

Cowlick -- Well, I brought a weapon that is practically bigger than I am, and it
actually worked this time! I always find it quite entertaining when you guys yell
"Moooooo"! -- Smimatsu

Caniliv Kat -- Nice one, I was thinking I was a little faster than you, but it didn't
work out. Good luck on the Isle, and thanks for teaching me some things on the way
out. -- Paragon

Cowabunga! -- I feel like one more hit might have done it, I need to find a bigger
weapon. And by the way, why aren't you teaching me anything? Because of that, 1st
one is on you at the inn. -- Tapik

Blue's Clues -- I think we're both feeling a little Blue after this matchup. While I
appreciate a win, this seemed like a little bit of an unfair matchup for you. We'll
try it again sometime after you get some more fights. -- Esterbrook

Willie Frue -- Another fun fight! I'm sure we'll be doing this on a regular basis.
-- Jadow

Aruak City -- Happy New year to all! Thanks for the hearty welcome back last year
and we're looking forward to many more exciting duels here! -- F.E. Bowl, Assembly
mgr.

Our congratulations to Rose Rooster. -- Jorja and the Krill Cavalry squad

Paragon -- Taking turns is important. -- Corvo Black
P.S. I'm not a golem, darned if I know why the Commission insists on that. I'm sure
that if I were a golem, my mother would have warned me.

Smimatsu -- We, Corvo and I, have teachers' liscenses. It's what we do. -- Berlam
Foote
P.S. Although winning is good, too.

Black Eye -- Luck is all it was. -- Corvo Black

Rose Rooster -- You definitely gave me the bird there. -- Berlam Foote

Jadow -- You're slim? How can anyone tell? -- Wilbert Frue

situation.

Tickle Me Tiger -- You're a devastating woman. -- Georgie Boy

Tangerine Turtle -- Oh... I thought you were a skipping stone. -- Maydee Quick

                              "DARK ARENA" -- The Novel

For centuries, the Shagornan Elves have been forced to live underground.
Human invaders, the Delarquans, burned their forests, sparking a war of elven
annihilation. The elders told tales that when the Delarquans marched to war
against the elves, the land itself bled as they passed. Since the war, the
elves have dwindled with every passing year, while the humans multiply like
rodents across the land of Alastari.

Now, the Delarquans have disappeared. Some say they departed, others indicate
it.s a ruse, but there have been whispered rumors of another greater threat
looming in the region. Khyron of the Shagornan Elves has been tasked to
determine the cause, realizing that failure is probable and at the end of the
road death could be the only reward.

Khyron has known only the safety of the caves, but now he must journey to the
world above...the World with No Ceiling.

Throughout the years, many fine writers have played Duelmasters/Duel II and have
contributed greatly to the history and background of the world of Alastari. One very
intense period, during the early '90's, was during the Rocanis War, when authors from
both the Delarquan and Free Blades arenas collaborated on writing the history of the
invasion of the arena-city of Rocanis. Mark Manley (aka Grimwood) is a long-time
manager in Rocanis, and was one of the writers who contributed so much to this
history. Over the subsequent years, he has worked to bring his novelization to life
and make the story of the War and the preceding events which led to it available to
the greater public. Many Rocanis legends appear in the book: Itoz Trollbane,
Sandstorm, and others. The novel is a treat to read--even more so if you are familiar
with the game!
