She stood and brushed leaves and dirt off her clothes (there were, of course, no flowers at this season). "I'm getting a little TIRED of this, Alourin," she said when her younger teammate landed beside her. "Is it so unreasonable to want to be able to use the door of the guildhouse?" Alourin glanced back at the building's front door. Or where the front door would be, if there wasn't a lot of water mounded up against it. "I didn't think the lake would actually CAMP on our doorstep," she admitted. "It's...very patient, isn't it?" "More so than I am," the Lady Protector said. "What luck have you had finding out what the lake wants of us?" Alourin shook her head and started down the street at a brisk trot. "Let's not stand in front of the guildhouse talking," she said. "If it sees me leaving, it might try to follow. I got thrown out--actually thrown out the door!--of the Steak- on-a-Stake yesterday when the lake followed me in. I didn't even get my sandwich, and I'd already ordered!" "I didn't know they did sandwiches. I thought it was all shishky bobs." Raven Eyes cast a last glance at the mound of water. "What have you found out?" she asked again. Alourin dodged a mostly-frozen set of ruts in the unpaved street. "I'm not sure. It's easy to TALK to a lake, but really hard to listen. I mean, it doesn't have a voice, not really. You have to listen really closely to the lapping of the waves on the shore, and if there's any other noise at all--" Raven Eyes stopped and turned to frown at her young teammate. "Do you mean to tell me you're going down to the lake at NIGHT?" Someone jostled her--the street was crowded--and sent an insinuating hand around her waist toward her belt pouch. She broke the wrist with a quick grip and twist, then jabbed her elbow backward without taking her eyes off Alourin. The screams didn't seem to bother her, but she was, after all, a Lady Protector. She had heard screams before. "Well?" "But I wasn't really alone," Alourin said. "The lake was there, after all." "Allie! It isn't SAFE down by the shore at night! And not just because of lake monsters, either. Jorja TOLD you not to--" "Well, Jorja isn't here, and we want to get the lake off the doorstep, don't we?" Alourin assumed her most innocent expression. "Maybe I can get it to stay in the pool while we work out what it wants? Then we could have the door back." "I want the lake totally off our property." "You say that about every pet I bring home!" "If you graduate--and don't hold your breath till that happens, the way you've been doing lately--you can set up a pet farm on your Lady Protector lands. But the guildhouse you have to share, and nobody ELSE on the team wants to live in a menagerie." "When Surfer Sam was doing stand-in managing, HE didn't care." Raven Eyes snorted. "Of course not! Monsters followed HIM home, too." Alourin waited till the sun had set, and then she waited longer while her teammates settled down to sleep. She sat at a window on the second floor and watched lights go out on the adjoining properties and across the street. Some people were taking a long time to settle down. Especially at the High Jinks guildhouse three doors down. They seemed to be having a party. Of course, they had a party every night.... Finally the street was dark, and all of Riztab that she could see beyond it, except for a few places near the shore. They wouldn't be much of a problem, since she didn't plan to go anywhere near them. There was lots of shore, after all. She climbed out her window. Hers was on the side of the building and didn't have a flagpole, but that was okay. There was a downpipe from the gutter that was firmly bolted to the wall, and she could slide down it easily. She had before. And gotten dirty, but hands and clothes would wash. And besides, it might rain, and then she wouldn't need to wash. When her feet hit the ground, she stood for a moment studying the sky and waiting to make sure no one had heard her. Nothing stirred except for a small wind, and the sky was heavy with clouds. It probably WOULD rain. Well, she'd been wet before. She went around to the front of the guildhouse to collect the piece of lake there, then set off for the shore. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ------------------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 504): T. Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. We now have a new top team for all of you guys to dogpile on. DOOM LEGION now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it. It was a tough week for DRAGON RIDERS, to drop 6 places in the rankings. Coming up with a solid 2-0-0 outing, DARKMOON has advanced 6 places in the rankings. Hey everybody, watch out for IVY, who flew up 24 points in the rankings after mashing SOCRATES like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. SOCRATES was beat by IVY and drops 24 points. Well, if ya don't shows up at the laundromat, ya can'ts wash yer clothes. CHAINSAW VIGILANTE did not fight this week so his title was forfeit. It's a proud day for the DARKMOON stable, as their warrior, BRIARTHORN, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the RIZTAB arena. Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad ARENA FELINES? Big bad ARENA FELINES. Big bad ARENA FELINES. RIZTAB's afraid of the big bad ARENA FELINES. Tra la la la la! For those of you who like math, try this one: ARENA FELINES + Weapons That go Boom = BLOODSUCKERS + Avoid City. And who is this STANK SHANK you ask, with 77 points and a 14-10-0 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! Challenging down 16 points was LUIGI. Pretty soon he'll be using two shields and selling 'T.P.: The only way to clean up' pins. Definition of petty: LUIGI beat MISSY, a mismatch of 16 points. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, NAMBY PAMBY went after BOO, who was higher by 20 points. Well, when the dust settled, NAMBY PAMBY was beat by BOO. Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! WIDDER GERTRUDE defied all odds and slew HEZDLAT THE GIANT in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as HEZDLAT THE GIANT's meat is notoriously tough. We might as well mark the passing of LOCKE, who was relatively new to the arena at 3-1-0. Probably killed before his first shave. The audience likes blood and there was plenty of it covering ALOURIN as she was driven to an early grave by INVINCIBLE MARIO of the TEAM MARIO. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens. Well, there's the manager of the RIZTAB giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Hasta la bye-bye. During the past 40+ cycles Hammer has been hosting the Hammer Run for the Roll Ups in DM 33. Thus far only the Ripper and Slasher categories have produced winners to claim the 5 New Team Roll Ups Prize for being the first declared Style Master of their respective categories to graduate. Every contending stable has gone inactive for one reason or another, including CASINO HAMMERZ, over the past several months. Now DM 33 faces the harsh reality that if RSI chooses to close any arenas due to little or no interest, Niytyole Island could very well head the list of endangered regular arenas! In an effort to preserve his beloved island, Hammer is announcing the continuation of the Hammer Run for the Roll Ups; combined with the Hammer 500 which will conclude both contests on T-500 [duedate July 13, 2005] should DM 33 continue to remain open in the coming months. Attention Hammer Runners! The Hammer Run is for 0 FE Basic Arena Warriors ONLY.
