TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Spymaster Torric staggered out of the old office building with a small, locked
chest and a growing sense of doom. He had let the ghost leave the building and
merely been glad that he didn't have to deal with it. But that was so irresponsible!
And besides, Makrok would say he should have done something about the ghost. That it
appeared to be the ghost of one of the First Citizen's ancestors further complicated
the matter.
Torric steadied himself against the current that ran parallel to the shore of
the lake and-- Wait a minute! Current? Since when? He looked around frantically.
He was still partly sheltered by the ruined stub of, um, by a bit of ruined wall.
But he could see, farther out in the lake (the moon was bright, though not quite
full) and also between his position and the shore, that sticks and leaves and other
floating debris, and even a fish or two, was being swept along counter-clockwise and
very rapidly. As though somewhere out in the middle of the lake someone had pulled a
plug, and the water was now swirling down a drain.
Rushing water tugged at his knees, even in the shelter of the broken wall.
Torric jerked his horrified gaze away from the lake and moved shoreward to the edge
of his protection, squinting at the channel he had to cross. Twenty feet across,
between knee and waist deep, and it swept under the old office building (or through
broken-open rooms, which would amount to the same thing. If he lost his footing, he
would be swept along with the current and would probably drown under the building.
Not a pleasant prospect, because he was fairly sure that his arena insurance didn't
cover resurrection from death-by-drowning.
Okay, so he'd be careful. He was nimble, he was stronger than he looked, and he
was highly motivated. He raised the iron-bound chest to set it on the wall beside
him.
The magician on the shore shrieked. "No! No, don't leave it there! You must
bring it to me!"
Torric looked at the man briefly, gauging his capacity to make trouble. Would
the fool magician try to cast a spell? Even a non mage such as himself could feel
that this was NOT a good night for such things.
No. No spell. Good. Unusually sensible for a magician, in fact. They could
always come back tomorrow--by daylight--and get the chest with a boat. If it was
still there. If the LAKE was still there. How long would it take the lake to drain
away? Or was there more water coming in somewhere? If the business was magical, and
what else could it be?, there was no telling what might happen next.
But first, there was getting to the shore. Torric looked at the water uneasily,
it was racing now and there was even foam on it. He could swim, of course, but he
didn't like to. A glance over his shoulder, out across the lake, encouraged him
forward. It was worse out there, and the "worse" might move toward the shore any
time. Better to get clear while he could. If he could.
He threw himself forward into the narrow channel and found the water deeper than
expected. Waist deep where it should have been only up to his knees, chest deep a
moment later. A fish collided with him and nearly knocked him off his feet; with
scrabbling fins it tried to climb his arm, eyes staring and mouth opening and closing
in silent pleas.
What was he supposed to do with a fish? He didn't LIKE fish, they were cold and
slimy and prickly. He threw it from him toward the shore, where it fell into a still
pool between two bits of broken wall and vanished. Torric followed, half wading and
half swimming.
"Angle to your left!" the magician shouted. "The left! The left!"
For lack of a better plan, Torric did so. It was hard going against the
current, but at least this let him lean against the flow. It made him feel a little
less likely to be swept away.
The magician was jittering along the shore, keeping even with Torric's uneven
progress, and when the spymaster was near, and facing a desperate last couple of
yards, the old mage braced himself against a ruined doorway and extended his staff
out across the water.
It seemed unreasonable that the staff could be that long, must be ten feet or
more! But there it was, and Torric grabbed it.
SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
RIZTAB brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. If this keeps up, THE RAITHSKAR,
you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4 in the rankings?
DREAMERS turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 3rd place rank in the listings this turn.
Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch DARK ANGELS
II's heads swell from their 3-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big
deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see SUGAR win a fight and gain 21
points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, MESCALINE MAN II beat SHADOW and SHADOW lost 16 points.
You're breakin' my heart. MEOW MIX Bloodfeuded LUIGI for RIZTAB's Title this turn,
and guess what happened? And it's out with the old, in with the new, as LUIGI takes
the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. I'm not in a
very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new,
don't you, RIZTAB?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
CASTLE, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team.
Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like TRIPLE 6 MAFIA avoided
them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph.
TILLERITA was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM
insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to GANJA of TRIPLE
6 MAFIA for challenging up by 21 to SILENT ANGEL. GANJA lost to get 2 points of
recognition.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for RIZTAB's
morgue. More variety. And sending COMRADE KULAK to the Dark Arena was supposed to
be one of your better ideas, CULTS-R-US? We're all going to die in the end, so why
worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
What does the RIZTAB arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Just wait 'till next time I show
up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! Paste this one in your scrapbooks, you'll
