"Well, why AREN'T you going to the Isle?" Sweet Betsey demanded. "I thought
that was the whole idea of the gladiator thing."
Alourshin shook her head and leaned back on the bench, enjoying the unseasonably
spring-like breeze. "The whole idea of the 'gladiating thing' is to SURVIVE it. I
have. Now I can get out of the game alive. I've wanted to retire for a long time,
but I never saw any point in DYING to do it."
"But--"
"You see that island out there?" Alourshin pointed across the water. There
were several small islands in this part of the lake, rocky humps with trees and bits
of old buildings. People said, well SOME people said, that they were the remains of
what had been the waterfront a long time ago, before earth movements had...deepened
the lake, or lowered the land, or raised the water, or whatever. Tokken M'Krok
claimed title to three of them, and various other people and institutions had claims,
some of those claims being stronger and some weaker. "That island is officially the
property of the arena here in Riztab--don't ask how, it's a really long story--and
arenamaster Rillion has agreed to lease it to me for a nominal fee." She paused. "I
think he just wants a caretaker, really, to make it clear to M'Krok that the arena is
hanging onto it."
Betsey looked at the island, then turned an incredulous gaze on her teammate.
"You're going THERE? You're going to LIVE there?"
"Yes. It isn't the end of the earth, Bets. I'll have a boat, I know how to
row, I know how to swim, I won't be TRAPPED there or anything!"
"But what about..." Betsey lowered her voice, "lake monsters?"
Alourshin opened her mouth to assert that lake monsters were mythical, then
closed it again. They WERE mythical, of course, she even knew what mythos they
belonged to. But that didn't mean they weren't real, too. "I'll be careful," she
said.
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly RIZTAB games. Warriors--remember that glory waits
always around the corner! Witness how this week HIGH JINKS went 4-1-1 to move up 3
in the rankings. EPICURIOUS caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as
he skillfully bested IRONSTORM and was awarded 24 points in recognition. In one of
the week's more notable duels, EPICURIOUS put down IRONSTORM, causing him to lose 20
points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing has KALEN in the past laid
claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his combat skill yet
again. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their
position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city RIZTAB. RIZTAB, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy
guilds is DREAMERS, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels.
Apparently the stalwarts of CULTS-R-US are catching the bulk of jests down at the
challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Loose talk at the arena has
reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after
LEIBNIZ. Watch your back! A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this
week, it seems that MANGY POLECAT posted a challenge against the more highly
recognized LEIBNIZ. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand MANGY POLECAT was
overcame by LEIBNIZ. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. My condolences to ICE AGE for their loss
of a very promising warrior, BLING BLING. BLING BLING went to doom before the arms
of MISSY MOSSY, a warrior of HIGH JINKS. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and
assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
The girls are as pretty in RIZTAB as ever I remembered them....and the fighters
as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed
a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
