Dullens Duellist Duellos
by
Hammer the WordSmith
Minister of War
"O God the Lord, the Strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in
the day of battle." -- Psalm 140:7 Amplified Bible
Welcome one and all to the torch lit opening ceremonies of ZalCon3.
Rumor has it that twenty plus managers have answered the call to cross blades
and match wits in what promises to be the fiercest and best ever historic Zalgor
Prigg sponsored contest in the Alastari Annals of DM/D2.
Legends and Legend Killers are reportedly delivering their stables to the
Dullens Dark Arena in anticipation of the greatest free for all ever witnessed upon
the Dullens Dueling Sands.
There remains yet one more Preliminary Round of Dark Arena Fight Options for
those contestants who are in quest of an Elusive Godling or Knacky Gladiator that
will tip the scales in favor of their stable, ensuring their enshrinement into
Managerial Mayhem Megalomania Monomania Mythology for ever more.
On the eve of this historic occasion, Hammer has chosen the torch lit path to
witness the grandeur and the glory from inside the blood stained DM 13 arena; instead
of merely watching wistfully from the outside, as so many managers have opted to do.
Perhaps a handful of fence sitters will heed this historic ZalCon3 call by
sending a stable to the Dark Arena registration prior to the 22nd of October due
date; before Dullens once again closes its doors to all but those who are truly
anointed ZalCon Zealots.
Hammer anticipates scribing an allegorical chronicle of the Dullens Duellist
Duellos [The Duelists' Code] as inspired by the entrants whose Dullens Dueling Code
is modified and mutated to win by whatever means available over the course of the
contest.
"May Your Blades Be Sharp and Your Wits Sharper!"

SPY REPORT
So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Hey everybody, watch out for DARKWIND, who flew
up 19 points in the rankings after mashing GHOST OF ELDRAD like a melon. Keep your
eye on this guy. Try as hard as the CARDOW HUNTERS stable might, they were unable to
find their warrior (and ex-Duelmaster) SILENT HAWK before this week's fights. In
front of all the crowds, DARKWIND took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give
the bum two weeks. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff?
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the DULLENS arena.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Ask not the elves for counsel,
for they will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh?
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in
next week's fights. Its been fun, and I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos). Now that I've
got you worked up for Snide Clemens, I'll be leaving-- The Unknown Spymaster

ZalCon3 Zealots -- There was such a crowd milling around the reopening of the Dullens
torch lit arena that it was difficult to recognize all the managers who turned out
for this historic opening round event, what with all the screaming and blood letting
going on! Zalgor Prigg, TigToad and Manager seemed to be enjoying themselves
immensely at the competitive turnout for the third ZalCon contest! Thought I saw
Maximillian and Liam the Goth, but with all the pushing and shoving going on it was
difficult to make a positive identification in the flickering torch light! Expected
to see Tripwire, The Greek Guy, Rillion, Ultraist, The Consortium and several others;
however, all the perilous pandemonium made it extremely necessary to focus my full
attention upon making sure that all five of my ASTONISH HAMMERZ gladiators not only
registered, but actually entered into the torch lit arena sands to meet their fate!
-- Hammer/Minister of War
P.S. It will actually be sometime in December before Christmas when I actually get
to read the fight results, as I have requested that the Gladiatorial Commission
forward my newsletters to my brother for safe keeping until I arrive at his home for
the Christmas Holidays and College Bowl Games! However, if anyone is interested in
being included in a famous Hammer the WordSmith storyline during the course of this
contest, please feel free to contact Hammer via Diplo, Personal Ad, Spotlight or
Email the necessary information needed to scribe a storyline to
ammerDM@fastermail.com

HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.

I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for
five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
Xiang, D2-101

*--*--*--*--*--*--*--*--* NEWS BULLETIN -- Second Edition *--*--*--*--*--*--*--*--*
In the interests of better dueling for all, those arenas which are and have been
for some time quite small are being closed. The regular-speed (two-week) arenas will
close at the end of April, the slow (four-week) arenas at the end of May. The arenas
which will be closed are:
DM 13 Dullens DM 46 Ardivent DM 63 Amen-Tei
DM 20 Seam DM 48 Caer DM 64 Kurukar
DM 23 Ti DM 49 Vithicar DM 66 Tarrgir
DM 27 Point DM 53 Khalhums DM 67 Barikala
DM 34 Monuntial DM 55 Khalani DM 76 Simtakka
DM 37 Sibikhas DM 57 Andor DM 79 Miroi Chang
DM 44 Krill DM 58 Delarq Tor
In order to participate in regular arena dueling, managers in these closed arenas
may choose to move their team to any other arena. It is not necessary to move a team
for its warriors to compete in tourneys; inactive teams will remain in these closed
arenas until/unless they move (similar to the arenas of Firehold, Cimmeriac, or
Sentern, DM 68-70). Teams from closed arenas may transfer to any arena, even an arena
where their manager already has an active team; in such a case, both teams will be
allowed to fight. As in the past, warriors already graduated to ADM will retain their
old identification numbers from their original arena, but their transferred teammates
in the new arena will receive new identification numbers for their new arena. Moved
teams and warriors will retain all their training, records, and other attributes when
they move, and may begin fighting in their new arena immediately.
There are two exceptions to the above team transfer rule, however. Managers
may not transfer teams to DM 93 (Noblish Island). Also, in DM 33 (Niytyole Island), a
manager may not have more than one team in the arena; a manager could transfer a team
into this arena from a closed arena, but would have to transfer the old one out first.
We realize that most managers have strong loyalty to their home arenas and would
like their arenas to remain open. If managers and arenas work together to collect
fifteen active teams in one of these arenas, that arena will remain open. Similarly,
if there is enough interest, we could reopen any of these arenas at a later date. If
this happens, any teams which transferred out will be allowed to return.
These measures are being taken in the interests of better dueling for all, the
reasoning being that arenas with only a small number of teams are simply not as fun as
larger arenas with more managers interacting. This move also gives us the flexibility
to reopen arenas or open new arenas at some time in the future, if there is interest.
Requests for team transfer may be directed to Customer Service at any time.

Name-Change-O-Rama
The winter tourney brought a lot of people to the Isle who didn't appear there
normally. This included Commission employees. Half a dozen arenamasters regarded
each other warily in the mirror behind the bar at the Pig in a Haystack. The Pig was
obscure and mediocre, drawing few gladiators, which is what they had all been looking
for. They saw gladiators every day. Most arenamaster were convinced that this was
some kind of punishment.
You could always pick out the arenamasters in a crowd. There were superficial
differences: One of these had clearly Adantri features, one wore an eye-patch, two
were female. But there were, in significant ways, alike. The same size, the same
hair-trigger alertness, the same deadliness.
The one-eyed man broke the ice, raising his beer mug in salute. "I'm Zrof One-
Eye from Zukal. Sugar of Arvat--" One of the women bowed slightly. "I know Sugar.
The rest of you...?"
The Adantri matched his salute. "Dernal of Dayla Kiv."
"Daiyla Kiv? Ah...."
"No, without the 'I' in it. These damned bureaucrats can't spell, and they
thought adding an unnecessary vowel was exotic." Disgust dripped from his voice.
"Tell me about it!" another man growled in agreement. "Khagal of Niatoli, and
what they do to the spelling of THAT simple word--!"
"I thought Daiyla, I mean Dayla Kiv had a different name right now,"
Arenamistress Sugar said. "The arena, at least, because of a contest?"
"Chavez Ravine." Dernal's tone was the one that substituted in polite company
for spitting on the floor.
Zrof blinked, taken aback by the bitterness. He wouldn't have minded a contest
in Zukal, and damn what they called the place. "It's only temporary, though."
"Temporary, shmiperary," another man muttered. He seemed well into his drinking,
although, like all arenamasters, he carried his liquor well. "They do it all the time
in Aradi. No reshpect. Go around changing thish, changing that. I wish I could
change shome thingsh." He signalled the bartender for a refill.
The second woman put her hand over his mug. "You've had enough, Harkon. Try the
coffee, instead."
"You should be mad, too, Ripplesh," Harkon said. "They're going to do shtuff
like that in Jahnsh, aren't they?"
Ripples Dorrigan shrugged. All the men paused, some with glasses half raised, to
watch. "It's the way things are," she said. "Not much we can do about it."
"You know," Khagal of Niatoli said, "maybe we could make a few changes. Fix the
spelling of Arena 33, for one, change a few standby titles--"
"The Commission hates changes." Dernal of Dayla Kiv topped up his glass and
drained it gloomily.
"Yes, but if we disguise it," Sugar of Arvat said, excited, "make it... maybe a
general Name-Change-O-Rama! Then we could slip OUR changes through and no one would
notice or mind."
*-------*-------*-------*-------*-------*-------*
By popular demand, we are holding a Name-Change-o-Rama during the month of March.
If you wish to change the name of your warriors or teams, please contact RSI Customer
Service. The charge for a name change is $1, unless you're in DOOMCorps, in which
case you take your chances. (Just kidding, guys! *snicker*)

Pagan's Logical Argument on Tactics and Their Suitability
The suitability comes from the "Red Book" in its explanation of tactics and references
to styles.
I of course assume that there are only two possibilities WS (Well Suited) or US
(unsuited). Nothing in the fight says you are using this tactic unsuitably so how can
we judge tactic usage...?
I look to the Favorites Chart and see what tactics are possible to the style and those
must be Well Suited. All the other tactics must not be Well Suited.
Perhaps there's a middle category, but I can't see a defined structure to prove it so
I stick with what I can know. Managers make the three pronged assumption because
weapons have three categories, WS / S / Unorthodox. They assume that tactics must
work the same way without any data to support their belief.
I believe that any style can use a tactic that they can get a favorite in. All other
tactics lower their style's fighting "string" in the program. There's always a chance
of getting a favorite tactic based on luck and any warrior could get any tactic, but I
don't think so.
Why I haven't made a change in my charts to reflect my ideas:
1. Everyone thinks of tactic usage as possible across all the styles, and some
tactics are better suited to some styles over others. Hence the three pronged thing,
or a varying degree of effects depending upon which tactic for which style.
2. I trust my intuition when I think of only WS and US, because I know that my
strategies will not make me fall on a decision which adversely affects my warriors
since I use only those tactics I see as WS to the style. Plus I feel I'm logically
correct <smile>.
This is how the tactics are written on the styles, in the current RSI stuff:
"The Parry-Riposte style is well suited to the Lunge, poorly suited to the Slash, and
horribly suited to the Decisiveness and Bash tactics."
WS I can understand; Poorly Suited has no reference for me; Horribly Suited means US
to me but this could all mean varying degrees of badness. How in the world do you
rate terms like Poor, Horrible, Ineffective, not-well, and other tags I've seen
mentioned in the styles of the Red-Book to denote skills not WS?
Favorites chart lists Slash, Decise, and Bash as not possible to ever have as a
favorite tactic. If you add up all the number of PR warriors that got one of these as
a favorite tactic you get the big ZERO. Decise I see is against the fundamentals of
the style. Bash is Horribly Suited...? Using Bash for the PR is just wrong since the
style doesn't even have a weapon that it could be used with. But I would bet that
they wouldn't put that in there if one or both of the following reasons were true:
1. the PR's had a bashing type Well Suited weapon, or marginally suited bashing
weapon
2. the PR's get an EXTRA negative when using the Bash tactic. (I believe unlikely
given my stance on the functions of a tactics usage at the end of the this essay.)
HERE'S ANOTHER:
"Offensively, because of its economy of motion, the Parry-Strike style lends itself to
Decisiveness modification. The Slash, Lunge, and Bash tactics can be used, but are
not very effective."
What does "not very effective" mean? Does it mean Poorly Suited? Why is there a
reference in the Parry Riposte about Horribly Suited to Decise and Bash, but not to
others? Does that mean that the Parry Strike is/or is not Horribly Suited to a
tactic? Is 'not very effective' the same as 'poor', or 'not well'?
This is all ambiguous. But let's try and look at what we "know."
The Favorites chart lists Slash, Lunge, and Bash as not possible to ever have as a
favorite tactic. If you add up all the number of PS warriors you get ZERO with those
tactics. I guess I could start to assume that the reason the PR got a special extra
mention about the Bash tactic may be from that style's weapons selection. The PS
weapon selection does offer it the potential to at least use a weapon suited to the
three tactics even though they are not suitable to the style (it is not possible to
get them as a favorite).
HERE'S ANOTHER:
"Defensively, the Parry-Lunge style is Well Suited to both the Parry and the Dodge
tactics. The Riposte can be used to some effect, but it is not a well suited tactic.
The Responsiveness tactic is not at all suited to this style."
A lot of the same questions apply. I can see Well Suited, but what about the other
tactics? Since the PL is not suited at all to Response, then is this the worst
possible tactic that could be used for the style, or should I assume that 'not at all
suited' has more innate badness than 'Horribly Suited'? The others are bad but not as
bad? Does it go from helpful to gradually getting worse? Wouldn't the program have a
rhyme/reason for tactics used by styles? Wouldn't there be a simple computer
formulation to be used in the fighting? I it goes from helpful to bad in categories,
then so far I have listed quite a few categories over the presumed three.
I hate the red-book for stuff just like this, and I am not alone in this opinion.
Favorite tactics for the three above styles listed in the Favorites Chart:
PR 3 Lunge ; 11 Riposte ; 6 Parry
PS 12 Decise ; 9 Response ; 9 Dodge ; 1 Riposte ; 8 Parry
PL 23 Lunge ; 12 Dodge ; 12 Parry
Now if you look at what the actual favorites are then you'll see the only tactics that
are Well Suited. Neither of the three have a favorite tactic available that didn't
say it was Well Suited. They had some WS tactics that weren't written about at all
but as for the PR we assume Riposte could be a favorite, where PL we assume that Parry
could be a favorite. The other tactics mentioned as being 'Poorly Suited', or 'could
be used to some effect' are not listed to be a favorite tactic at all for the
corresponding style when you look at a Favorites Chart. But we don't even have to
assume the styles WS tactics, just by looking at the Favorites Chart we can see them
for ourselves.
I think the need to put more words into the "what is the such-and-such style" made the
writer(s) of the Red-Book put comments about which tactics could be used. By looking
at the Parry-Lunge style you immediately guess that this style will be able to use
Parry and Lunge tactics, and the inferences seem to show themselves this way through
all of the styles. The trouble is determining if there are degrees of US tactics or
not. I personally doubt that there are.
I'm sure that the Poorly Suited, Horribly Suited, and other adjectives used in the
style explanations of all the ten styles reflect both the weapons available to the
style and the preferential weapons that are well-suited. I have to say preferential
since weapons used can be well-suited, marginally-effective, or unorthodox. Use a
marginally effective weapon with a tactic listed as Poorly Suited and you have a bad
combination, so instead of listing Bash for the PR as 'not-well' (or some such
adjective) it gets listed as 'horrible'. What it broke down to was the PR using a
weapon with negatives, and a tactic which causes negatives. But enough of my rambling
about the Red-Book of Lies....
I'm sure that anything not able to be gotten as a favorite tactic is a negative
modifier to your warrior. The others only alter the program's numbers. Like moving
some of your attack skills to Decise when using the decise tactic but over all not
reducing your warrior's total skill performance.
Say a warrior has 10 skills in all 6 skill areas
INI RIP ATT PAR DEF DEC TTL
10 10 10 10 10 10 60
Now let's assume a 5 skill bonus for a WS tactic
Our Striker uses Decise - a WS tactic
INI RIP ATT PAR DEF DEC TTL
9 9 9 9 9 15 60
In this case I can see a shuffling around of 5 skill points towards Decise, lowering
the effectiveness of the others by 1, while keeping the total skills at 60.
But use a tactic your style can't get a favorite in (in my opinion an US tactic) and I
bet it enhances that area while subtracting from your warrior's total skill
performance by twice the amount (2 skills per area instead of 1)
INI RIP ATT PAR DEF DEC TTL
10 10 10 10 10 10 60
A Parry-Lunger uses Decise - an US tactic
INI RIP ATT PAR DEF DEC TTL
8 8 8 8 8 15 55
In this case I can see a shuffling around of skill points towards Decise, lowering the
effectiveness of the others by twice the amount of a WS tactic, and lowering the total
skills to 55 (that's a 5 total skill loss). Where the former keeps you at zero skills
negated, the latter would keep you at a negated skill level. Use your favorite
tactic, and I assume there would be no shuffling of skills just an enhancement of the
skill area correspondent to the tactic. And in my examples that would be an
enhancement of +5 skills in decise for a total of 65 skills ( a +5 total skill gain).
