"O God the Lord, the Strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in
the day of battle." -- Psalm 140:7 Amplified Bible

Hammer furrowed his brows together in deepest thought as his carriage pulled
into the courtyard of his newly established ASTONISH HAMMERZ guildhouse near the
recently reopened DM 13 Arena.
A dispatch rider had brought Hammer the registration papers from the offices of
the Gladiatorial Commission, so Hammer had been quite busy contemplating whether or
not to assign these new gladiators to the Dark Arena for round 2 of the ZalCon3
contest.
In some respects, the original five warriors who had fought by torch light in
behalf of his stable last cycle might have been better representatives for the
ZalCon3 competition, but the intrigue of sending an entire stable to the Dark Arena
to compete in a contest with replacements was theoretically too interesting to miss!
Now the decision to use the Dark Arena a second time had to be reached and done
so rather quickly with other matters pressing in upon Hammer from the outside world!
Upon closer scrutiny, Hammer decided that the replacements were much better
suited for his purposes; however, each gladiator left something to be desired in
their general creative makeup that seemed to whisper "Dark Arena" more than once.
Hammer weighed the consequences of sending one or more of these new replacements
to the Dark Arena, but decided against such a seemingly rash decision as he continued
to work with the creative numbers to produce gladiators that would bring him personal
enjoyment with each ZalCon3 newsletter report in the weeks and months ahead.
Participation in ZalCon3 was intended to be a type of "Retirement Party" for
Hammer in the aftermath of his announcing that he would no longer host or sponsor
another contest in Alastari.
However, that did not mean that Hammer would refuse to experiment and continue
to run gladiators that brought him personal satisfaction and/or fulfillment that was
foreign to most of the other managers who were competing in this contest.
Hammer decided that creating these warriors and entering them in the upcoming
all Mailer Apprentices Tourney with 1FE under their belts was far more challenging
and intellectually stimulating than to merely send them back to the Dark Arena.
Should Death be their Destiny, then Death would have to seek them out on the
Basic Arena or Tournament Sands and not in the Dullens Dark Arena!
Further consideration was the journey that Hammer was about to undertake and the
length of time it would take for him to receive his Fall Mailer Tourney results.
Deaths in the Tourney and the obvious delays to entering replacements in the DM 13
contest would certainly erode the 100 Fight Minimum required for a ZalCon3 manager to
receive an Iron Stable/Iron Manager Award. Improving a contest gladiator would be
too good an opportunity to let slip away by a hasty decision to send one or more
gladiators to the Dark Arena, a gamble that Hammer decided was too risky as he
prepared for his upcoming journey.
Also at risk was the opportunity to be able to create any replacements in
time to be entered into the Fall Mailer Rookies Tourney; therefore, with the hand
that was currently dealt to Hammer, it made better sense to allow these five new
replacements the opportunity to prove their worth with one fight in DM 13, before
competing against a field of probable well timed 4FE registered Apprentices Tourney
combatants.
Hammer understood this to be a Win/Win situation for his stable. Those
ASTONISH HAMMERZ who found some way to live through the experience would somehow find
a way to compete among the ranks of the ZalCon3 warriors who were being created and
prepped by the managers of the following stables:
     ARCANE ARCADE 427 KATHOUSE 519
     ARENA FELINES 530 KIRKWOOD 1 535
ASTONISH HAMMERZ 521 LUROCIANS ABC 534
     BLUE COLLAR 538 PERFECTION QUEST X 527
CON ZAL CON 525 POTTER POTPOURRI 523
DARQUE FORCES 540 PROJECT MAYHEM 537
     DREAMERS 539 SLAUGHTER'S CREW 520
DUNGEON CELL ZC3 522 STYLE AND STRIFE 529
FORCE OF FIVE 533 STYLE OVER SUBSTA 524
     FURY'S EDGE 528 SUPERIOR FORCES Z 531
     ISN'T IT OBVIOUS 536 WHAT MOM'S SAY 526
Plus, there was still time for a handful of managers who had been sitting on the
fence trying to decide about entering the ZalCon3 to send a stable to the Dullens
Dark Arena due dated October 22, 2005 and qualify their replacements for the Opening
Scoring Round due dated November 5, 2005.
Hammer decided that it would be best for his stable to gain the 1FE and survive
the rigors of the Apprentices Tourney, than to enter the Rookies Tourney to gain
experience among gladiators of equal 0FE and miss an opportunity against opponents
who were obviously more experienced on the arena sands.
Sending these five gladiators to the Dark Arena now would be counter productive
to the experience they would gain by surviving the Apprentices Tourney.
Any resulting Death would fit into the fabric of his plan and Hammer would still
be able to achieve the minimum required 100 fights to claim an Iron Stable/Iron
Manager Award in behalf of his ASTONISH HAMMERZ to anoint a deserving contest
gladiator.

"O God the Lord, the Strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in
the day of battle." -- Psalm 140:7 Amplified Bible

Hammer read with great interest and ironic surprise the newly delivered notice
from the Gladiatorial Commission that had just been handed to him moments before by a
travel weary dispatch rider that had ridden long and hard to bring him the message.
"This changes things immensely," stated the veteran manager to no one in
particular as he scanned and rescanned the notice, "but not too drastic a change and
it will ultimately fit into the overall scheme of things better than any previous
plan that I could have devised for this ZalCon3 gladiator stable!"
Hammer thoughtfully drummed his fingertips on the wooden desk as he meticulously
rethought his strategy for the next round of the ZalCon3.
The immediate problem was in deciding what to do with the misprinted information
regarding his first replacement warrior. Obviously, the registration had been filed
by Hammer due to false, or rather mistaken information originally provided by the
Gladiatorial Commission, which in turn had subsequently disqualified the registration
of the first gladiator in question and put the completed registration of the other
four ASTONISH HAMMERZ gladiators on hold for both the ZalCon3 and Fall Tourney.
Yet, this was NOT an unpleasant surprise setback, but rather an opportunity to
create a gladiator who Hammer would use to take advantage of the ZalCon3 format of a
second Dark Arena round; another Win/Win situation as Hammer concluded his analysis.
Hammer decided that it would be best for his stable to send the original four
remaining replacement gladiators to the DM 13 sands the next cycle as planned; for
the chance to survive the ZalCon3 Basic Arena experience, plus gain the 1FE to
qualify for the opportunity to also try to survive the rigors of the Apprentices
Tourney against more experienced competitors, which would immeasurably season his
stable for ZalCon3.
Meanwhile, this unexpected replacement-replacement gladiator would have to prove
himself worthy in a fight by torch light to also be granted the opportunity to
survive the rigors of the Apprentices Tourney in preparation for any ZalCon3
opponents.
Hammer deduced that, although there would be a small window of opportunity to be
able to receive notification of any deaths on the ZalCon3/Dark Arena sands, that
there should still be enough time to register any needed replacements for the Rookies
Tourney to gain valuable experience among competitive gladiators of equal 0FE prior
to the first point scoring round of the ZalCon3 competition in DM 13 due dated
November 5, 2005.
The Only Major Gamble that Hammer would be making was that his upcoming journey
might possibly necessitate a 4 or 5 round ZalCon3 delay in getting any replacements
registered as a result of one or more of his ASTONISH HAMMERZ gladiators being killed
in either the Apprentices or Rookies Tourneys.
Hammer was more than willing to defy those odds and proceed as planned.
Any resulting Death would fit into the fabric of his plan and Hammer would still
be able to achieve the minimum required 100 fights to claim an Iron Stable/Iron
Manager Award in behalf of his ASTONISH HAMMERZ to anoint a deserving contest
gladiator.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of DULLENS! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team CARDOW HUNTERS was
unseated this week as ARENA FELINES II moved up from 5th ranking to take the top spot
with a 2-2-0 record for the round. The proverbial rising comet can only hope to
compare with FURY'S EDGE's team record! A 1-4-0 week and now a firm grasp on a 5th
place ranking. I have begun to suspect trickery on the part of ISN'T IT OBVIOUS.
How else weeks like this one's 1-4-0? How else the sudden move to 6th team? The
proverbial rising comet can only hope to compare with DREAMERS' team record! A 0-3-0
week and now a firm grasp on a 10th place ranking. My tutors were fond of telling me
that the higher you rise the harder you fall. This week KIRKWOOD 1 went 0-1-0 and
fell 13 notches into 17th! BASHING FELINE caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested SL-SOLITUDE and was awarded 10 points in
recognition. Due to his absence and inability to defend the throne, DARKWIND has
lost the title of Duelmaster. The city has turned out in honor of BASHING FELINE,
for with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest position in the city!
Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole
city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city DULLENS.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins.
In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in DULLENS. Nice atmosphere you have here! Sadly warriors, now longer can I
keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till
next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are
angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Erudite ED -- There are a handful of stable names that provide clues as to the
identities of the managers, but would you be so kind as to consult your Espionage
Envelope for DM 13 and please release the names of the known stables/managers, so
those who fail to speak up in the P-ads this cycle will be revealed to the other
competitors? -- Hammer; Minister of War

Alas, I am far from my Espionage Envelope this cycle, as I am visiting relatives
before they get snowed in for the winter. I shall do a manager list for you
next cycle though. -- The Saint, keeper of lists

ZalCon3 Zealots -- Welcome to the Party! -- Hammer; Minister of War
P.S. HammerDM@fastermail.com is the accurate spelling for interested correspondents!

Zalgor -- Participating in ZalCon3 is how I am celebrating my contest sponsorship
retirement! My Best Wishes are being sent your way from overseas, because as the
Host of this celebrated contest you have your work cut out for you my old Tempe Facer
friend! -- Hammer; Minister of War

Kat; the Calico of Contest Craziness -- Unlike your start in the Delarq Death Fest,
at least all the other 21 stables have matching records! Glad to see you on the
sands old friend! -- Hammer; Minister of War

Maximillian -- Hello, old friend! Welcome to a fast arena contest from your slow
arena roots! The great thing about it is WE are NOT responsible for hosting this
contest and can appreciate the effort Zalgor Prigg puts into documenting and
officiating the proceedings! -- Hammer; Minister of War

Master Darque -- Glad to see you changed your mind and made arrangements to cross
blades in this contest as well, my friend! Looks like your alliance is well
represented here in Dullens! Plenty of competition and hopefully plenty of Spots and
P-ads as well in the weeks ahead! Gives everyone something constructive to do
between TW4 rounds! -- Hammer; Minister of War

Street Legal -- That must be you managing SLAUGHTER'S CREW my friend! Do the memory
of Slaughter Priest proud in the type of contest he would have enjoyed participating
in! Looking forward to crossing blades! -- Hammer; Minister of War

Garfield -- Not surprising to see one of your stables on the contest sands! Style
Master contests always draw the most interesting competitors! -- Hammer; Minister of
War

The Greek Guy -- Always enjoyed your presence in Niytyole Island way back when the DM
33 Hammer contests were at their peak! -- Hammer; Minister of War

Manager -- Looking forward to seeing what you draw from the Dark Arena! You and TGG
always spiced up the competition in Niytyole Island during the Hammer sponsored
contests back in the day! Many are the managers who respect you for your countless
accomplishments on the sands and your Semi Annual Facer Reports on the Round Table.
Hammer respects you for reaching out and encouraging a newbie to transfer his
mediocre at best stable from Noblish Island DM 93 to cross blades with many of the
legendary veteran managers who were migrating back to Niytyole Island DM 33 way back
when! Your encouragement to an unknown newbie made all the difference in the choice
made by Hammer to recruit other newbies to transfer their stables to DM 33 and make
history! My current stable of gladiators may not be what others would allow to live
for such a contest as this, but I look forward to surprising my peers with the hand I
have been dealt for this ZalCon3 contest! -- Hammer; Minister of War

ZalCon3 Zealots -- While I am waiting for the rest of you to speak up in the P-ads my
stable of misfits would like to introduce themselves while they yet live! -- Hammer;
Minister of War

ZalCon3 Slashers -- Odds are that I am not one of the favorites to compete in this
category, but I do hope to make our competition on the DM 13 sands a most painful
experience for those who sign on to my dance card! -- HAWKEYE HAMMER SL

ZalCon3 Rippers -- Hammer may have retired from sponsoring contests, but he still
enjoys creating Rippers for contests when ever an outlandish set of numbers lend
themselves to such a creation! Hammer may not be entirely satisfied with my creation
numbers, but I do hope to poke a bit of pain among those on my dance card and bring
some Ripper satisfaction to Hammer in the process! -- ICE PICK HAMMER PR

ZalCon3 Aimers -- Manager is not the only manager prone to creating Total Parodys!
Just because I am a Lady does not mean a scratch of pain will not run the sands red
among those who sign on to my dance card! -- SCARLET HAMMER AB

ZalCon3 Total Parodys -- Some circles refer to those of our style as Toilet Paper
warriors! Those who sign on to my dance card will probably agree, but even certain
brands of Toilet Paper can be painfully discomforting during times of great duress!
Hammer considered sending me to the Dark Arena, but what is a contest without
creatively challenged gladiators surviving, while highly favored and blessed
gladiators die? Hammer remembers Maximillian's Morya Madness! -- ICE CLAW HAMMER TP

ZalCon3 Bashers -- Hammer knows that this contest will probably be full of [BURP!]
much better Bashers than [BURP!] what his stable has to offer! But those who sign on
to my [BURP!] dance card will [BURP!] become painfully [BURP!] aware that some
gladiators are created for [BURP!] comedy relief as well as full of [BURP!]
surprises! Veterans of Maximillian's Morya Madness will remember to [BURP!] take
nothing for granted on the [BURP!] contest sands! That is why Hammer has spared my
[BURP!] life from the Dark Arena [BURP!] to compete in this [BURP!] contest with the
rest of you [BURP!] contestants! -- WAR BURP HAMMER BA

ZalCon3 Zealots -- "May Your Blades Be Sharp and Your Wits Sharper!" Especially when
it comes to remembering to brand your gladiators with that tell tale style master
identification label in their names! Did you notice how many of the warriors who
were sent to the Dark Arena last cycle did not have a style master identification
label in their name? What a shame it would be to have one or more of your gladiators
disqualified from the Style Master competition due to non style identification! Then
adding insult to injury, when at the end of the ZalCon3 the stat numbers of the
gladiators who won the awards for outlasting the competition are revealed with the
proper name identification; knowing your gladiator was far better suited for the
style than the experimental warrior who received the awards! Be seeing you on the
sands! -- Hammer; Minister of War

ZalCon3 Zealots and ZalCon3 Slashers in Particular -- Be it known to one and all that
due to a clerical error in the paperwork originally provided by the Gladiatorial
Commission, that the heretofore ASTONISH HAMMERZ gladiator named HAWKEYE HAMMER SL
has been branded an imposter and has been forthwith eliminated and disposed of
according to the ways and means of the aforementioned Gladiatorial Commission, thus
making his dance card invalid/obsolete to all those who were looking forward to an
intimate encounter with said gladiator! -- Hammer; Minister of War

ZalCon3 Strikers -- My painful dance card must first stand the test of being
singed/burned as I must prove my worth by torch light; before being given the
opportunity to further prove myself in the Apprentices Tourney to qualify as an
ASTONISH HAMMERZ gladiator proven and established as a well qualified bone fide
competitor among the ranks of the ZalCon3 gladiators! -- DATORCH HAMMER ST

I don't know why one Cardow Hunter fought and the rest didn't. We're looking into
the matter, and next time you'll have all five or none. -- Uncle Wolf, Cardow Hunters

                                 THE VIRTUES OF SPEED

For several years now, many of the Duelmasters veterans have eschewed the
warrior attribute of Speed. The Rogue She-Puppy of the Galaxy once summed up this
sentiment by declaiming that (paraphrased): Anything Speed can do, Deftness can do
better; many weapons have a Deftness minimum, but none have a Speed requirement.
This article covers aspects of Speed which may have been overlooked by many other
Duelmasters managers.
Other articles have covered how Speed will affect a warrior's decisiveness. I
won't belabor the point, except to say that the higher the Speed, the better the
chance of "getting the jump" on an opponent. However, Speed without a moderate level
of Deftness will generally get a warrior in trouble. The converse of this axiom is
that a HIGH Deftness, combined with a HIGH Speed, will give a warrior a definite
advantage.
Perhaps the greatest advantage in developing a high-Speed warrior is the "VERY
HIGHLY COORDINATED" statement which can be derived therefrom. If SP + DF > 31, the
VHC statement will appear on the warrior's overview. On its own, the VHC statement
does little more than aid decisiveness, responsiveness, and dodging. But, if SP and
DF are both > 31 and either SP or DF > 14, then the VHC statement will be modified by
"with the ability to use a weapon in each hand." So, not only will a warrior
generally get the jump on his opponent, but if the opponent dodges towards your
warrior's off-hand, this warrior will get a free shot at his opponent with the
off-hand weapon. For parry-types, using a bladed weapon (dagger, hatchet, short
sword, etc.) for parrying purposes can oft times be the difference between winning or
losing. The opponent is generally caught off guard and succumbs to the unexpected
threat.
The greatest advantage to this high-Speed attribute can be seen in Strikers.
Due to their innate endurance bonus, Strikers can be shorted in both CN and WL.
Combine this with a small SZ, and your warrior can load up on ST, WT, SP and DF. Try
something like 13-5-10-13-9-17-17. This will make an awesome Striker.
For parry-types, reduce ST and add to WL. (Obviously, this cultivation of Speed
should not be applied to Total Parry warriors...unless you desire a Total Pud!)
Example: Parry-Ripper 7-6-7-17-15-17-15; five WT Statements; Incredibly Quick; Very
Highly Coordinated; born Expert in Riposte. This warrior fights well at 4-2-6 HE-HE-
R, 7-3-6 HE-HE-L (desp) with EP and off-hand SH, and ALE. A born initiative-stealer
with great learns!
As for Slashers, this technique will usually result in an additional bonus: The
"SENSATIONALLY QUICK" statement; however, this will usually be accompanied by the
"does LITTLE DAMAGE" statement. Slashers will get the jump, but they would do well
to train up their ST if they want a winning record. ST = 9 is a safe bet, as this
will get you a scimitar. Combine this with an off-hand hatchet and go for the legs.
Experiment a little with this and you can turn an otherwise DA-bound rollup into
a Speed Demon. Just pray that your warrior doesn't get HOSED! I hate when that
happens! :)
     Best of luck.

Kalkin, mgr. Faerun's Finest (7), Wraiths of Wrath (22), Wiccan Warriors
          (33), and Knockaround Knights (74)
