TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Avenging Antelope guided his horse slowly into the dusty town of Dullens. It
had been a long, dry ride and he was eager to hitch the gray gelding to the post
outside the nearest saloon and order a whiskey. He could imagine the burning
sensation as the liquor poured down his throat, refreshing his weary body....
"Snap to it, Ante," growled the cranky voice of the team captain, Rampaging
Rhino, "We're almost there. I want to get the supplies offloaded and see about
hiring some domestic help right away. The Guildhouse is bound to be filthy after
what, ten years of absence?"
Avenging Antelope winced. He wanted a few hours to rest before dealing with
the issues that restoring the old Satan's Kingdom Guildhouse would bring. He had
been in town a few years back for just a couple of fights, but he stayed at one of
the local inns during his stay. He did make one trip out to the Guildhouse at the
request of one of the old Satan's Kingdom senior gladiators to pick up the old log
book. The place had been filthy even then. He hated to see what it looked like now.
Still, RR was voted the team captain unanimously and Avenging Antelope found
himself nodding despite himself.
"Okay, RR. I also have to get over to the temporary Commission HQ and register
the team. I have the official paperwork in my saddlebags. It shouldn't be long."
He smiled a wry grin. There were several saloons en route to the Commission HQ and
the arena. There would be *more* than enough time to get that whiskey.
The five riders trotted up to an old, tall stone tower near the center of the
oldest region of Dullens. The gate was chained shut and a shutter clattered against
a windowframe in the swirling breeze. A tumbleweed drifted slowly down the road
towards them, passing their supply wagon on the way.
"This is it, boys," Rampaging Rhino shouted while dismounting, swinging his long
leg over the rump of his chestnut stallion. "This is home."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
It was a good try, Oedipus, but you have to remember that fighting with both
shoes on is different. And I'm afraid the arena stewards here are picky enough to
insist that you wear both shoes or none. Tedious of them, but there it is. They're
really into symmetry.
Darkwind
SPY REPORT
Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! SATAN'S KINGDOMS had cause to celebrate, after
BLOATED BEAVER got 16 points by beating ROBERTO LEATHAM. Win some, lose some.
Speaking of which, BLOATED BEAVER was winsome, after beating ROBERTO LEATHAM and
seeing him lose 9 points. Out with the old, in with the new. Enter GHOST OF ELDRAD,
handily defeating DARKWIND. With 85 points, WINDWALKER of CARDOW HUNTERS takes the
position of DULLENS' Duelmaster. Word has it one team in DULLENS is taking speech
lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
And how sociable are DULLENS' warriors? Come, let us see.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Questions are being
raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain tavern in
DULLENS would I avoid!
Do not think spyreporting in DULLENS is the highlight of my life. Keep those
sands bloody and the buzzards fat! Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

Hmm. I look at the dates on this newsletter, and I wonder, "What's up?" These
golems appear to be easily confused. -- Jorja, Cardow Hunters
I don't know who this Koo Koo Kung Foo is, besides a rotten cook, but I don't like
him anyway. -- Little Ox
Now that Ox has brought it up, I don't care for this... person, either. He teaches
poorly. -- Windwalker
P.S. It is right that the crowd laughed at him.
I don't see why someone out there, such as a golem-specialist artificer-mage, doesn't
realize that your average neuter golem is NOT an effective impersonator. Gendered
ones are more convincing, but, of course, they're much harder to control. -- Ramshorn
Golems don't make good salesmen, either, not that anyone is like to want to buy part
of Mordant. Although I hear the place has a bridge that could be a good buy. --
Blackbuck
P.S. The Commission seems to think I lack courage. Little do they understand that
what they took as pussilanimity was actually simple prudence.

Name-Change-O-Rama
The summer tourney brought a lot of people to the Isle who didn't appear there
normally. This included Commission employees. Half a dozen arenamasters regarded
each other warily in the mirror behind the bar at the Pig in a Haystack. The Pig was
obscure and mediocre, drawing few gladiators, which is what they had all been looking
for. They saw gladiators every day. Most arenamaster were convinced that this was
some kind of punishment.
You could always pick out the arenamasters in a crowd. There were superficial
differences: One of these had clearly Adantri features, one wore an eye-patch, two
were female. But there were, in significant ways, alike. The same size, the same
hair-trigger alertness, the same deadliness.
The one-eyed man broke the ice, raising his beer mug in salute. "I'm Zrof One-
Eye from Zukal. Sugar of Arvat--" One of the women bowed slightly. "I know Sugar.
The rest of you...?"
The Adantri matched his salute. "Dernal of Dayla Kiv."
"Daiyla Kiv? Ah...."
"No, without the 'I' in it. These damned bureaucrats can't spell, and they
thought adding an unnecessary vowel was exotic." Disgust dripped from his voice.
"Tell me about it!" another man growled in agreement. "Khagal of Niatoli, and
what they do to the spelling of THAT simple word--!"
"I thought Daiyla, I mean Dayla Kiv had a different name right now,"
Arenamistress Sugar said. "The arena, at least, because of a contest?"
"Chavez Ravine." Dernal's tone was the one that substituted in polite company
for spitting on the floor.
Zrof blinked, taken aback by the bitterness. He wouldn't have minded a contest
in Zukal, and damn what they called the place. "It's only temporary, though."
"Temporary, shmiperary," another man muttered. He seemed well into his drinking,
although, like all arenamasters, he carried his liquor well. "They do it all the time
in Aradi. No reshpect. Go around changing thish, changing that. I wish I could
change shome thingsh." He signalled the bartender for a refill.
The second woman put her hand over his mug. "You've had enough, Harkon. Try the
coffee, instead."
"You should be mad, too, Ripplesh," Harkon said. "They're going to do shtuff
like that in Jahnsh, aren't they?"
Ripples Dorrigan shrugged. All the men paused, some with glasses half raised, to
watch. "It's the way things are," she said. "Not much we can do about it."
"You know," Khagal of Niatoli said, "maybe we could make a few changes. Fix the
spelling of Arena 33, for one, change a few standby titles--"
"The Commission hates changes." Dernal of Dayla Kiv topped up his glass and
drained it gloomily.
"Yes, but if we disguise it," Sugar of Arvat said, excited, "make it... maybe a
general Name-Change-O-Rama! Then we could slip OUR changes through and no one would
notice or mind."
