       + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Larkin here, with a report from the Winter Tourney. Okay, maybe this isn't
Atlantis, but it's somewhere warm, and if that isn't a beach, at least it's sand,
and, as advertised, there are drinks with umbrellas in them. And young women with a
lot of suntan showing. By the time you read this, the tourney will be over, but
while I'm writing it, the tourney is NOT over. And a lot of you guys reading this
won't have been able to go, anyway.
I'm interviewing Zalgor Prigg, one of the managers participating in the Old
Valamantis Bloodgames, and let me tell you, Old Valamantis is not a place you want to
hang around if you don't have to. It's rotten with magic, to begin with--Folstrom
magic, the blackest there is--and then it's got all this blood and violence on top of
it, and it makes for a dark and scary venue. Anything might rise out of the ruins
around the arena, summoned by the blood and the curses of the managers.
"Mr. Prigg, could you tell us why you--"
"It was the play on words," the manager said, overriding the question. "I
couldn't resist--the chance to call a Bloodgames team Phoenix, you know, the 'rising
from the ashes of death' business. Of course, then I had to change it to Phonetix,
but that's okay, keep people guessing."
"I've heard the Commission mages talking about that name, sir, and they seem
alarmed. One of them said the name was practically a spell in itself, used here."
"I heard. That's why I had to change it."
"Have you considered what might actually rise from the ashes and blood here as a
result?"
"Well, no, but that isn't my business, you know. I manage gladiators. Let the
mages worry about what pops in from some other dimension. Besides, what if nothing
happens?"
"But, sir, there have already been reports of zombie rats and tentacled monsters
lurking in the backs of the locker rooms! And someone is bound to consider that you
have a partial responsibility--"
"No," Prigg said, "I have no responsibility for that kind of thing. I'm no
magician, I haven't been reading forbidden tomes...." He paused, looking thoughtful.
"Maybe it was TigToad with his Obscure Lore...."
"I don't believe there's a team of that name in this Bloodgames--"
"No, not here. Earlier, in Veastian. He could have been, hmm, preparing for
this, opening contacts if not gates, stuff like that. Has anybody seen any Dark
Toads around?"
"Not until they've had six drinks with umbrellas in them. Tell me, sir, have
you given any thought to the moral implications of the Bloodgames?"
"What moral implications?" the manager asked. "This isn't about morals, it's
about survival. And the way to survive on the sands is to kill your opponents every
chance you get!"
     "Yes, but--"
"There's a reason they don't hold these contests up in Andoria," the manager
said sternly. "Good people in their ways, the Andorians, but they just aren't cut
out for this kind of grim business." He paused to listen to the roar of the crowds
jamming the ancient arena. Checked the marquee where slaves dangled from ropes and
updated the records of participants. Nodded, grimly satisfied. "Another death.
That's good--can't have too many survivors, or it cheapens the victory at the end."
     "But the death toll--"
"Bah! Don't get the idea that these gladiators are the flower of Alastarian
youth. The ones who enter the Bloodgames are the men with no hope. We offer them a
future they could never have dreamed of, but they have to work for it, sweat for it,
bleed for it, and sometimes die for it. The survivors..." he bared his teeth in a
grin that would not have looked out of place on a wolf, "they owe us EVERYTHING, and
they'll do anything to repay us."
     "But--"
"And besides," Zalgor Prigg went on, "if you really want to take up the moral
question, go talk to the Grey Wand. She's the one set this up, after all."
"I don't see the point, frankly. She's got plenty of Lord Protectors, and they
have longer training, skills polished and honed to a--"
"The Bloodgames victors, they're Her enforcers," Prigg said. "No polish, sure,
but when a dirty job needs doing, one of these guys will do it, and no questions
asked."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Hail Dullens, the Avenging Antelope salutes you!
I'mmmm back and ready to roll after another title fight against Darkwind. Mmmmy
tournammmment fights have helped me get the edge on these arena only warriors, but
they still have a lot of fights and scare mmmme a bit.
I was asked by mmmmy teammmmates to mmmmention a past story. I was the
assistant to the weapons mmmmaster here mmmmany years back and was part of Dullens
history. It unfolded as follows:

(Dullens History Lesson--Translated from Antelopese by Bloated Beaver)

Back when the original Satan's Kingdom team was relatively new to Dullens, a
long saga unfolded whereby an astronomical event, namely the arrival of a huge
meteor, created from a special chaos born--magical ore which tumbled in toward our
world from deep space, created a tear in our reality.
Each person in the entire world was somehow duplicated--there were twins
everywhere! Unfortunately the twins were not identical, rather in some cases they
were warped and evil and in others they had completely different personalities. It
was quite amusing at times, but scary at others as conflicts grew across the map. At
the same time the meteor also threatened to tear the boundry between our reality and
the Chaos realm.
In fact, one of the reasons for the creation of the Gateway arena was that one
of the Chaos Gates was torn permanently open, forcing Lady Sheila to station a
permanent garrison of gladiators on the other side of the Gate. It took quite some
time until the magic to seal the Gate was discovered, allowing the gladiators to
return to Alastari.
Diverting the meteor took the combined efforts of Lady Shiela and a group of the
most powerful wizards in Alastari and it took them the better part of a month to
achieve. This left plenty of time for all sorts of trouble to occur.
In my case, I was busy sharpening weapons and stocking the guild supply room.
It was about 10-12 years ago, so I was in my early teens at the time. That was
pretty much all I did those days--that and dream of being old enough to sign up to
fight myself. While I was working, my twin arrived on the scene--apparently he was
quite the lothario, and he went to a local pub and began trying to make moves on
female patrons. Being that he was a teenager, he was thrown out and he fought back,
injuring a barkeep in the process.
The whole thing was reported to the Sherriff of Dullens, who, at the time was
Tex. I think that was his name. So of course the Sherriff and his possee arrived to
arrest me. The guild was pretty empty and I had no idea what they were talking
about! I gave up, though, and was taken to jail.
About an hour later they caught my doppleganger and he ended up in a cell next
to me. It took the better part of a week for them to sort out which one was me and
which one caused the trouble at the bar.
Fortunately I was in jail, though, because the twin of one of the fighters,
Handsome Swine, ended up burning down the guildhouse. If I'd been in my chamber, I
might have ended up dead.

And that's a true story!

Your Duelmaster,
Avenging Antelope

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
DULLENS brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, DAGGERS DEEP, since THE
CONFESSIORS took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Gee, I'm
impressed, a 3-0-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, THE CONFESSIORS, the Fates teach
humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see
KALLI ELISABETH win a fight and gain 17 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, SLOBBERING SNAIL
beat ROBIN DYAN and ROBIN DYAN lost 11 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if
variety is the spice of life, DULLENS may be getting bland, as AVENGING ANTELOPE
stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do
you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. THE
CONFESSIORS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team.
Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like SATAN'S KINGDOMS
avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me.
Hmph.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if
the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
There's got to be a better place in DULLENS to get a drink than The Yellow Dog
Tavern! Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so
nice! So nyaaah! Paste this one in your scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come
this winter-- Snide Clemens

Mara Blade -- I'm jealous! The Commission recognizes that YOU are Rirorni, why can't
they see that about me? Damned clerks. -- Blackbuck

     You haven't bribed us yet.

Avenging Antelope -- *I* didn't eat antelope at the barbecue, I had chicken! Well,
sort of, grousy birds, anyway. I am totally innocent of the antelope-killing. --
Darkwind

I suppose I should feel kindly-disposed toward the Ghost of Eldrad, since the ratings
it gave me probably contributed to my graduation. But I'm not. I don't like ghosts.
I wish they would all evaporate, or get back in their tombs, or whatever. --
Windwalker

I don't think guardsmen should be allowed to get drunk, at least not on duty. The
arenamaster was disgusted, and I can well believe it. I was disgusted myself. --
Ramshorn

Robin Dyan -- Wow, remind me never to play cards with you. Talk about fast fingers
and hot luck! -- Soft Rock

So, I'm leaving. That will feel odd, it's been so long. I wonder where I should go?
Probably not the Isle, although I'm told that I am "not so bad" (details on request).
But I want to do something ELSE with my life now that I'm done with this. --
Windwalker

Kayelbe -- Greetings to you, and come by our place for the regular barbecue (if you
don't mind risking the ire of the Avenging Antelope). -- Jorja, Cardow Hunters
