Stonedog ducked in through the door-flap and began to stamp the snow off his
boots and shake out his coat. "Still coming down," he reported.
"What a surprise." Rainbird made a rude noise. "If you're in for the night,
drop the second curtain, will you? There's a fierce draft through that doorway."
"If I close it off, the room will fill up with smoke," 'Dog said.
"You know..." Blackhorn looked around the main room of the longhouse critically,
"this wouldn't be half bad if we had real doors and a chimney. Maybe even one of
those closed heating stoves I've heard of--"
"Dream on," Rainbird said. "We're lucky we aren't still in tents!"
"I miss the tents," Biting Fly confessed. "They were... proper. We're horse-
nomads, after all. We *should* be living in tents."
"We are NOT horse-nomads," Blackhorn said. "Not any longer. We're gladiators.
Fixed address. Regular work. Paydays, even. We could live in a real house."
     "Uncle Wolf always said--"
"He isn't here, and you know Jorja won't care, so long as we pay for it
ourselves." He looked at the firepit in the center of the room. "Start small. A
conical hood over that, and a chimney. I've seen 'em in other buildings, why
couldn't we do that? And a real door. Seriously, let's think about this!"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

     Ah... Thumbscrews. I unscrewed them.
And if that isn't enough of a column, tough. I can't do everything, and I've
got to think about the spotlight, too.

                                      Rainbird

                                      SPY REPORT

The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon DULLENS, for
I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! HARRY POTTER AND THE posted a nice gain, to come
in 2nd. Everybody loves a winner... HARRY POTTER AND THE had cause to celebrate,
after MAGICAL SHORTCUT got 23 points by beating THUMBSCREWS. BITING FLY certainly
had a baffled expression on his face, after losing to TOODLES ENRAGED! and losing 9
points in the process! What can be a greater victory? SAM ADAMS has taken his place
as the top, as DULLENS' new Duelmaster. Word has it one team in DULLENS is taking
speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas?
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
All good things must come to an end. Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards
fat! Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

Oh, crumbs! Current top team--according to the latest directives, that means we have
to write a spotlight. Well... how about "more than you ever wanted to know about how
nomads spend the winter"? -- Rainbird the annoyed

Polyjuice Twins -- Looks like you're the wrong kind of juice for the season. Orange
is good. Or apple, as in cider. -- Stonedog
P.S. You know, listening to the neighbors converting their riding lawnmowers into
snowplows can be nerve-wracking.

D'Artangnon bested me? I can't believe it! -- Blackhorn

Of course I was savage with the Tex Impersonator! What did you expect? He's a
professional liar. -- Biting Fly
P.S. And the doing of this made me Most Popular, so that just SHOWS.

Huh, I slew a Sheep Herder. Good. Sheep are filthy beasts, and they ruin the range.
Not like cattle and horses. Mind you, the cattle, and the horses too, have to be
kept moving, you can't fence them in. -- Anvil

We salute the tourney participants, wishing, as we do so, that some of them had done
well enough to bring their teams back to activity here. Maybe when the snow melts?
-- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
