Stonedog rolled up the arena newsletter and fed it into the fire that burned in
the center of the longhouse. "Top Team again," he said. He looked at his teammate
Anvil. "Got any bright ideas today?"
The big man batted at smoke drifting upward, mostly but not entirely toward the
hole in the roof. "A door," he said. "And a chimney. You ever wonder what it might
be like to sit around a fire, inside out of the rain, and not breathe smoke?"
"A door and a chimney are fine, but why don't we just get JOBS and BUY them?"
Rainbird asked.
Anvil snorted. "Who'd hire a bunch of Rirorni gladiators who always smell like
smoke?"
"Any place looking for cheap labor," Biting Fly answered. "I bet we could get
jobs as street sweeprs or something."
"I was offered work on a potato farm," Blackhorn said. "I refused, but--" He
shrugged. "Farming, not my thing."
Everyone contemplated that for several minutes.
Stonedog swirled the last of the soup in his bowl and drank it down. "You ever
wonder about farming? Food that doesn't have to be chased down, or kept from doing
damn silly things like stampeding in a storm?"
"Can't do it on horseback," Anvil protested.
Rainbird raised her eyebrows. "We DO have legs of our own," she pointed out.
"There are things that even the Rirorni don't insist on doing on horseback, too, so
that proves we CAN--"
"If we have to, yes," Blackhorn said. "But there must be other options. How
about... hmm. Maybe we could get jobs as couriers."
"Worth a try," Stonedog agreed.
