Even though he and his companions, Jeri Northwind, a gladiator from Zorpunt, and Berdan, a Fratsfan ex-assassin, had just come from the devastated town of Point, he had not expected to find Iaye in such a mess. "What happened here?" Jeri asked a lounger. The local man, who could have used a bath, shrugged and spat. "The Trier rose up and smashed the waterfront," he said. He looked at the woman calculatingly, as though trying to guess how much money she might spend on hearing his tale. "Or ghosts did it, if you can believe that." "Ghosts out of Krael," Raoul said, nodding. "They hit Point, too." "That's what folks say," the man agreed, scowling. "I guess you heard the story already, huh? When I saw 'em coming, them ghosts, I didn't stay to ask their names. A mean bunch. But things are pretty much okay on up the hill. Harbor House can still give you a bed and a half-way decent feed." Raoul looked at the man thoughtfully, glanced at his companions, and saw that they agreed with him--ask this loafer nothing, tell him nothing. Iaye had an arena, he and Jeri both had contacts there. That was where they'd ask their questions and look for help. Goff, the manager of Red Dog Gang in Iaye, shrugged. "They say it was ghosts, but who knows? Does it matter?" "Not to us," Raoul agreed. "Asking was just curiosity. We've got other business. We're chasing a man known as Peranis, a Raltuman--" "Him! He's a big-time troublemaker here, but he's got powerful friends. Nobody can touch him." "That's what we heard in Point, too," Jeri said, nodding. "Is he actually here now?" "No, I don't think so, I think he went to Skaithvarn. I keep track of him, as much as I can, so as to keep out of his way. I had a run-in with him a few years back," Goff explained, "and he's been out to do me bad turns ever since. That man can REALLY hold a grudge. Uh...what do you want him for?" Raoul glanced at Berdan, and the Fratsfan shrugged and sighed. "Peranis is a member of the Assassins' Guild," Berdan said. "A high-ranking member. Though he's been doing mostly administrative work lately, never doubt for a minute that he is a dangerous man." "Right, I won't doubt it," Goff said. "Why are you following him?" "Because he's run off with the Guild's Black Book...which lists all the assassins, all the Andorian spies abroad, all the people that the Guild is in a position to coerce--" "Blackmail, you mean," Raoul growled. Berdan nodded. "But up until the King disbanded the Guild, it wasn't blackmail, it was, ah, 'encouraging them to act in the national interest rather than in their own'." "With the 'national interest' being determined by the Guild, of course," Jeri muttered. "This Black Book, is it just names, or does it have details?" Goff asked. "I mean, if somebody steals it from Peranis, can that somebody use it to blackmail?" "Yes. We are pursuing Peranis to retrieve the book, which will be--" "Which will be burned as soon as we get our hands on it," Raoul finished. "But some of the information might be of great use to the King!" Berdan protested. Raoul shook his head. "No. That book is muck," he said flatly, "and you can't pick up even a little of the muck without getting dirty. Let the King compile his own files for 'encouraging' his citizens." "And I hope he doesn't feel the need," Jeri added. "But you're right about the Black Book. We've got to burn it." "But first we have to catch Peranis and get the Book away from him," Raoul finished. "You say he went to Skaithvarn. Where? There are several strong city- states over there." "I didn't ask him where he was going. My idea was to stay out of sight," Goff pointed out. "But the word is he mostly goes to Istoreth." "Isn't that the one that has a treaty with Osksi?" Raoul asked. "I didn't like the idea of that book falling into S'varni hands, and I like it less if the Osksians are going to have a chance at it." He took off his bowler and frowned down into it as though he was looking into a crystal ball. "We need to get over there. You know anyone with a boat?" "Well...yeah, I've got a boat myself that'd make the crossing. It isn't that far. But...." Goff ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. "But it might be needed here--what if the ghosts come back?" "Why should they come back?" Raoul asked. "Nobody knows why they came in the first place, so how can we know whether they'll come back?" The manager shook his head like a dog shaking off water. "Are things going crazy everywhere?" "Yes," Jeri answered, surprising the others. Defensively she added, "Well, they are! Point was destroyed by the ghosts, too, and Seam now has a geyser in the middle of town that can't be helping things much, and there are other stories going around. Have you heard anything at all from Ti lately?" "I know, doll," Raoul said quietly, "but we can't do more than one thing at a time, and our job is to catch Peranis." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 231): DOMINO of BONDAGE (Spawn, mgr.) Tobir, So it's like I tried to like do this once before. But like my manager is like really lazy lately, something about his health or like something. So like blah-blah-blah what're you having? So I'm gonna have a going away party at our guildhouse. There's gonna' be like nachos and pizza and chicks and booze and chicks and nachos and.... (slap) Oh yeah sorry! So like it's been like really great, and stuff being like your Duelmaster and like I want all the hot chicks to stop by and see me! Yeah that would be cool! So like I thought Lady Dorothy was hot and stuff, but she killed my cool warrior brother Boomslang, yeah he was a cool looking snake. He even like bit me once and I got real sick, but Street Legal got me some medicine and got some more in case it ever happened again. So like I poked her with my like...y'know my.....Epee in the stomach and leg, and I like think I scored too. But then Street Legal told me that doesn't count. This sucks I'm never gonna' score and stuff. It's like I double bloodfeuded but it like didn't work, she avoided me and stuff. But I managed to arrange something with the commission and I like got to do my thing anyway. So like before I go and stuff I guess I should tell you what my design and stuff was. I am a LU 13(1)-7-5-17-17-13-13. I had Masters in: INI, ATT, DEF and AdEx's in: PAR, RIP and Ex in DEC. 71 skills learned, +4 RIP, +1 ATT, +4 DEF, +2 or 3 in DEC. My favorites are HI/MO, SH (yech), and learn PAR. So like it's off to the Isle and stuff so I can finally be rid of that loser Butt-Head and stuff. Be sure and take care of him while I'm gone. Y'know slap him around and stuff for me yeah heh, heh. So it's off to the party, and nachos, and hot chicks and heh-heh, heh..heh..heh- heh...heh..heh-heh,heh-heh.... (slap) Cut it out Butt-Head. Dillhole! Beavis SPY REPORT Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day, I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! Practice pays for SOLLY BILL, who pummelled VIRGINAL CONCUBINE, to pocket 15 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, ATROPHY was winsome, after beating VICTIM and seeing her lose 8 points. Duelmaster BEAVIS from THE DEATH SQUAD is going for the gold, as he Dark Arena Challenged DARK ARENA's HIGH ELF. Ooh, the excitement! HIGH ELF found out that TOBIR isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! Word has it one team in TOBIR is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life! A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Is it charming personality? Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, JUNKYARD MUTT is the most challenged warrior. Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors. HIGH ELF in the Dark Arena wasn't enough for BEAVIS of THE DEATH SQUAD. Maybe that certain serving girl(?) at The Deeproot Inn will be! Charity is unknown in TOBIR, and rightly so. THE FELLOWSHIP exacted their revenge against DELIVERANCE. Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee. All good things must come to an end. As the seasons change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TIGER JIM 3899 24 22 0 101 THE DOGHOUSE (188) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DAISY JANUARY 3913 22 20 0 99 THE DOGHOUSE (188) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -LADY DOROTHY 2957 15 16 1 89 OLYMPIANS (320) SOLLY BILL 3998 14 8 0 86 THE DOGHOUSE (188) CONAN 3986 10 10 0 77 THE DEATH SQUAD (63) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME JUNKYARD MUTT 3936 14 18 2 62 THE DOGHOUSE (188) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ATROPHY 4034 6 4 1 52 THE DEATH SQUAD (63) LIVING DEAD GIRL 4077 5 0 1 43 THE DEATH SQUAD (63) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME VICTIM 4033 6 6 1 30 DELIVERANCE (33) YETI 4025 5 10 1 30 DELIVERANCE (33) ARAGORN 4082 2 0 0 30 THE FELLOWSHIP (416) -I ATE MY WORM 4053 2 0 0 26 I BENT MY WOOKIE (413) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -ATREUS 4083 2 0 0 12 OLYMPIANS (320) BOWSER 4096 1 2 0 11 THE DOGHOUSE (188) PRITHEE 4092 1 2 0 10 DELIVERANCE (33) RAPINE 4091 2 1 1 8 DELIVERANCE (33) -DUDDITE 4090 1 0 0 8 OLYMPIANS (320) JOHN Q. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse. Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207, due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals. Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10 points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion. Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being Slaughterhouse Champion awaits! More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider, russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
