"It's infamous, that's what it is! The gladiators are losing all respect. They
don't FEAR us as they should." Cultic Grandmaster Sleeth scowled around at his
companions, to the accompaniment of a crash of thunder and the sound of a tree being
rent in two or possible three somewhere near at hand.
"They can defeat us. Why should they be afraid?" Darias Le Plume, the
Trustworthy Scribe asked. His fingers played nervously with his quill pen,
scratching a tense little design on the scrap of parchment in front of him, but he
seemed unaware of what his right hand was doing. "I'm taking out insurance...."
"What kind of insurance can there be against death in the arena?" Cheulian Asri
of the Beggars' Guild demanded. "Everyone who steps onto the sands takes that risk."
Sleeth leaned forward suddenly and put his hand over Le Plume's doodle, getting
a nasty wound from the steel-tipped quill in the process. "Don't do that," he said.
"You do NOT want to summon a demon!"
"Just the sigil won't summon--"
"I know more of these things than you," the Cult Master hissed. "In drawing
that sigil, you are taking risks you can't imagine." His scowl had reached
formidable proportions.
"A demon? How can that be insurance?" the Beggar asked, also leaning forward,
trying to get a glimpse of the drawing.
"It wouldn't keep me alive," Le Plume said, "but it'd make sure that the killer
didn't get a chance to gloat." He shrugged. "I figured if I carried it on me, over
my heart, any blow that killed me would drench the sigil with blood and release the
demon, and it'd get the nearest person: the one who'd just killed me. Seemed fair."
"No, no, NO! You can't treat a demon that way! You think a demon would stop at
'getting' just the killer?" Sleeth snatched the piece of parchment and tore it up
carefully. "Demons don't care about 'fair'. They only care that the Rules are
followed, and by the Rules, drawing the sigil is a declaration of Intent to Summon.
You could bring disaster on us all! Besides, just SUMMONING a demon isn't enough,
you have to be prepared to CONTROL it, and you've made no preparations for THAT, have
you? By the condyles of the Crooked Bone, you've made no proper preparations at
all!" Once he had reduced the parchment to shreds, he fed the bits into the flame of
the candle on the table between them, darting nervous glances over both shoulders as
he did so. There was nothing to see but the room itself, small, comfortable, warm
with firelight. The windows were shuttered and would have been blinded by rain
anyway; they could all hear drumming of rain on the roof whenever the thunder paused.
"That's no way to run anything," Le Plume said. "Stupid situation. It should
be regularized--"
"It has been! What do you think the Rules ARE?"
"There wasn't any mention of 'rules' in the book I found. All right, all
right." Le Plume shrugged and pulled several more scraps of parchment from a pocket.
"I suppose you'd better have these, too, then."
"More?" Sleeth took the sigils in a trembling hand, hardly daring to look at
them long enough to identify the demons they were aimed at. "I trust this is...," he
swallowed once, "all?"
Le Plume didn't meet his eyes. "That's all I have," he said.

SPY REPORT
Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport.
I doubt TOBIR will ever be the same. And let's see, ANGRY SHEW fought JUNO and
gained 20 points and contributed to THE DEATH SQUAD's 5-0-0. JUNO has lost to ANGRY
SHEW, falling 16 points, while helping make THE DOGHOUSE a 1-4-0 turn. Defending
hers title for another turn, SHADOWCAT kept TOBIR's warrior, NOBLE ASSASSIN, from
claiming the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable
sources that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. The most challenged warrior this
turn was FRAG 'EM ALL!'s warrior RICK JONES. More fighters challenged him than
challenged the Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, I WET MY BED! from I BENT MY WOOKIE
challenged up 23 points to fight RICK JONES from the FRAG 'EM ALL! stable. I WET MY
BED! perhaps got its just desserts, seeing as it overcame RICK JONES and ended up
with 47 recognition points.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. A brave warrior does not carry a
red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in TOBIR and I've a long road ahead of me.
Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in TOBIR again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

PERSONAL ADS
All -- Allow me to re-introduce myself. I am Edge, manager of Frag 'Em All and I
must say that a Duelmastership is exactly the way I would have wanted to return! My
thanks, all! -- Edge
Angry Shew -- I'll bet you're REALLY angry now. -- Shadowcat, who would send in a
Duelmasters column if she actually thought it would make it past the e-mail gremlins
Peregrine -- For some reason, probably innate stupidity, the Dim Hairy Thing is
convinced that you're a "pretty bird." He doesn't seem to like the idea of hitting a
pretty bird. Or maybe he's convinced himself that he can't hit a flying thing. I
don't know for sure what he's thinking. Or if he's capable of thought. Anyway, I do
know that he's incapable of formulating a coherent personal, so I did it for him. Am
I friendly and helpful, or what? -- Bowser
Snow Leopard -- Better hang onto those skills, you may need 'em. The Cultists make
bad enemies. They have no morals, you see. Don't follow any rules. Nasty fellows.
-- Pussyfoot
Dead Man Walking -- Ah, but sometimes, you have to run. -- Juno
P.S. You're better off with a loss, you know. Safer. That undefeated record tends
to make you a target, not only for other gladiators, but for Bad Luck.
Scarborough -- I thought you were Scarborough FAIR, but you're not. Grossly unfair,
actually. Anybody who'd kick a dog when he's down.... -- Bowser
I don't LIKE M. Chardinee. He tried to patronize me! Patted me on the head and told
me I was a "good dog." Like he'd know! -- Honey Pup
Zero the Hero -- Did we congratulate you? Despite all comments in the past, we do
honestly congratulate you on your success. -- The Doghouse
Bullfrog -- I looked the other way when the Cultists complained about gladiatorial
brutality. But this is going Too Far. -- Cheulian Asri, Chief Spokesman for the
Beggars' Guild
Ferret -- You're a damned tease. If you were so hot on defeating me, you should have
done it right off. Six minutes! That's ridiculous. -- Darias Le Plume, the most
Trustworthy Scribe in town

Azereth has returned! I am the manager for Scarlet Blades in DM 25. I was a member
of the Crimson Alliance and the Crimson Brotherhood (which was composed of former CA

hear from anyone who remembers me, as well as any Alliance that is seeking to add
experienced managers to their roster. Contact me at:

Convention" block. Our room block will be released in mid-December, so please make
sure you reserve your room before then!
Room rates include a full cooked-to-order breakfast and a complimentary two-hour
manager's reception. There is a free shuttle to the airport, as well as free parking.
The hotel is located down the freeway in Tempe. All rooms have high speed internet
(for an extra charge). There is a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool, and of course a

street. Look for transportation info in the tournament information sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. Don't miss this one, it'll be a blast! See you there!
