continues
The Standbys followed Darius Le Plume, the Trustworthy Scribe, very closely as
he went back to his quarters. Very closely. Only Dacio Torranz, the Ambitious
Guard, held a drawn blade, but Le Plume was not fooled. There was about the rest of
them an air of readiness to produce sharp steel at the slightest wrong move.
Cultic Grandmaster Sleeth hunched his massive shoulders and darted his gaze into
every shadow, of which there were plenty, since it was nighttime. The rain blurred
details and would drown out the smaller sounds, but there was a feeling to this night
that made him uneasy. That fool Le Plume had been playing a more dangerous game than
he could imagine when he'd written the demonic sigils. Sleeth growled low in his
throat (at which Cheulian Asri, Chief Spokesman for the Beggars' Guild, jumped and
moved a little farther away). Le Plume had treated the demons as...almost as a JOKE.
Demons would, Sleeth knew, tolerate some of the worst working conditions, but they
would not tolerate being made light of. And an angry demon was not particular who it
attacked. They could all--
Light flared poison-green in the mouth of an alley, and everybody jumped.
Swords materialized in every hand. The light was gone as suddenly as it had
appeared.
"You should not be out tonight." The deep voice was familiar as Arenamaster
Vasku's, and people began to relax.
All but Sleeth, who would have sworn--if you could pin him down--that in the
instant when the light flashed upward he had glimpsed...someone who was not an
Aruaki. Horns? Fangs? The cultist was not sure, and to make an accusation without
solid knowledge would be foolhardy. Besides, what if the Arenamaster WAS a demon,
hiding the little differences of his form under an illusion? Some of Sleeth's best
friends were demons, and Vasku had always been courteous and had never overstepped
the bounds of his commission. Besides, the idea of a demonic arenamaster rather
appealed to him. He wouldn't mention it to the other standbys, of course, even with
proof. They didn't understand about demons. As was demonstrated by Le Plume's rash
actions. Had Vasku gotten a hint of that? The demons indicated on the Trustworthy
Scribe's sigils might well know what was going on, and while they would not--possibly
could not--tell normal people, if Vasku WAS a demon, they might tell HIM.
"We're all going over to Le Plume's place," the Chief Beggar said. It was
always his instinct to ingratiate himself with those more powerful than he was.
"What a coincidence," Vasku said. "I was going that way myself. I'll walk with
you."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Well, Visigoth, that was a surprise, and a pleasant one. I didn't really expect
to defeat you.
Juno
P.S. Why didn't you learn anything?
SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of TOBIR. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give
you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. Practice pays for
BULLFROG, who pummelled TRUSTWORTHY SCRIBE, to pocket 19 points. ANDILLIA certainly
had a baffled expression on hers face, after losing to PEREGRINE and losing 8 points
in the process! Like a flirtacious debutante, TOBIR's Duelmaster JUNO found himself
the man of the hour, being "invited to dance" 6 times! The arena was more crowded
than usual this time, as DEAD MAN WALKING faced TOBIR's Duelmaster. JUNO
successfully staved off a grab for the roses by DEAD MAN WALKING of THE DEATH SQUAD.
Does TOBIR have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in
TOBIR is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it
works.
And how sociable are TOBIR's warriors? Come, let us see. Like a horde of
jackals fleeing from the lion, so did the "warriors" in TOBIR avoid THE DEATH SQUAD.
Like a pup with its tail between its legs, I BENT MY WOOKIE scurried away from THE
DEATH SQUAD. Oh, the shame!
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards
fat! Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir
