Zorpunt:

The Great White Shark surfaced and glided to the stone wall of the harbor. He
had chosen a deserted section at the north end; the lights were all at the other end,
across the river's mouth. There was no one to see him as he climbed the steps built
into the wall of the waterfront. No one except, he hoped, his teammate Stonefish,
although the Stonefish had his own prey to hunt this night. No, the Fish was there.
Shark flicked moisture off his body with a twitch of powerful muscles and accepted
the hooded robe the Fish held out to him.
Ever courteous to a fellow predator, Shark asked, "How was your hunting
tonight?"
"Inconclusive." The Stonefish peered around in the darkness, then led the way
down an alley. Over his shoulder, he said, "There WAS something there, the hairy
little fishbait had that right. But it slipped away too quickly. Yours?"
The Shark licked his thin lips. It was a land-animal's gesture, but he had come
to appreciate it. "Very good."
"You probably shouldn't have eaten another gladiator." There was no accusation
in the comment, just thoughtful observation. "And these landsmen would probably
prefer that you showed remorse."
The Shark twitched a massive shoulder. "What is there to regret? Everyone
dies. That is the way of life. And Limpette's death was clean. Quick. No one
could ask more."
     "Tell that to the mammals."
Shark flicked the comment away. He had more interesting news to impart. "How
deep would you say the lake is, here at Zorpunt's harbor?"
Stonefish shrugged. "I have no idea. Forty or fifty feet?" he guessed.
"Certainly no more. The boats that come here only draw ten feet at the most. Well,
perhaps twelve for the largest. So?"
"Out there," the Shark gestured with one webbed hand, "no more than thirty yards
out, the bottom drops away to...a depth I have not yet plumbed. But very deep. And
the water changes from fresh to salt." He licked his lips again. "I like my meat
with salt on it."
"Some of the wizard's doing, you think?"
"What else could it be?" The Shark walked in silence for several minutes.
Neither he nor Stonefish were bothered by the darkness of the streets or the
possibility of footpads. "The wizard. Great Khaldren, he calls himself. But he is
a shark, too. I know another predator when I smell one. I wonder what game HE is
hunting?"

Tobir:

Tomath Woodman, Convincian Hero of Tobir's arena, backed his chair up against
the wall and shivered. When Jessaro Dra, the Mordant Escapee, brought him a mug of
hot mulled wine, he accepted it gratefully and took a deep swallow. "There's
something out there, Jess," he said. He shot an uneasy glance over his shoulder at
the tavern's dark windows. "Something...weird."
"I believe it!" Dra gestured toward the bar, where several other standbys and
even Arenamaster Vasku stood drinking. "They've got an unbelievable story to tell
about Monster Vegetables--"
Woodman shook his head. "I heard that when I came in. This is something
different. Something out in the lake."
"A lake monster?" The other sat back, disappointed. "People are always talking
about lake monsters, and how many are ever displayed on the shore?"
"This is real," Woodman insisted. He shivered again. Dra noted that the man
was soaking wet. True, it was raining, but Woodman was wetter than just from rain.
"I was night-fishing, and something grabbed the boat, tipped it over. Tentacles--"
Dra sighed. "ALL lake monsters have tentacles. It's a rule, almost."
Woodman's bloodshot eyes met his. "You don't believe me."
"Well, Tom, I know you don't MEAN to exaggerate, but--"
"Wait till it comes ashore and then tell me there are no lake monsters."

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! Nothing is certain in TOBIR, with changing
loyalties, changing Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--THE DOGHOUSE. Good
things come to those who fight well, as PLAYPEN can attest, moving up by 1. Practice
pays for BINKIE, who pummelled SHIFTYEYED VOLUNTEER, to pocket 13 points. A certain
someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 4 points to
WOOFER. (Discrete enough, PORN 'STACHE?) What can be a greater victory? BOWSER has
taken his place as the top, as TOBIR's new Duelmaster. Word has it one team in TOBIR
is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
And how sociable are TOBIR's warriors? Come, let us see. If challenges were
horses, HAMMERIN HANK could open up a fast food joint! Place your bets! BUTT-HEAD
is the long shot of the week: they challenged HAMMERIN HANK, up by 29. Soopreyes,
soopreyes! BUTT-HEAD emerges from the fray 1 points the richer. Good show,
BUTT-HEAD! CHICHI-HOOEY found himself challenged by a warrior 19 below: CRACK BABY.
CRACK BABY of THE DEATH SQUAD kept its wits as it was bested by CHICHI-HOOEY.
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Death in the
arena! In a cheap quest for a cheap victory, HAMMERIN HANK faced BUTT-HEAD in an
uneven fight. THE DEATH SQUAD, we expect bloody revenge! Ask not a spymaster for
counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious
stupor.
Leave me now, you base fools! More important duties call me. Can anything
compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for TOBIR? On that giddy note I take
my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Death Squad -- Thanks for making us feel welcome. One for me, one for you. A hearty
congratulations on Haywood Jab. -- The Feline of Fairplay, Kat

Doghouse -- Similar kudos for Bowser--though the record is slightly-less-than-
envious, your perseverance is to be applauded. -- The Klapping Kitty, Kat

Arena Master Vasku -- We shall have a full contingent of warriors come the fall. If
no other warriors arrive this month, I foresee only 12 gladiators on the sands. We
will stay the course until Tobir is returned to her former glory. -- Kat (Playpen)

Haywood Jab -- I won't exactly COMPLAIN, under the circumstances, but, under the
circumstances, don't you think it would have been more graceful of you to LOSE that
fight? -- Lord Protector Bowser the cool, courageous, and very trustworthy

Crack Baby -- I think you're the biggest baby I've seen. Of course, as a golem, I
suppose you could be built to any size. -- Chichi-Hooey

Cheerful Fan? I'll show him "cheerful"! -- Andillia

Andillia -- Careful, he's been chewing Dark Root. -- Woofer

A conflict between Andorian and Aruaki? There IS, but I wonder if any other manager
here in this arena will notice Kat's comment and respond? -- Leeta, Dog House but not
averse to a cat now and then
P.S. To the Furball of Fighting, Kat, Jorja says "Hi!"

Lord Protector Haywood Jab -- The Commission says you are to be given lands. Fine.
Let them give you lands. Why should I hunt for lands to give you? -- Arenamaster
Vasku
P.S. All right, I could offer you the apartment belonging to the late Embezzling
Scribe, currently infested with vegetables.

Lord Protector Bowser -- Dogs don't need lands, and you already have a doghouse. It
says so in the newsletter. -- Arenamaster Vasku
P.S. There's something that might be a frisbee abandoned on the beach. You can have
that, if you go get it yourself.
