Each Greenwarden on patrol carried an amulet that would signal the group's
headquarters if that carrier died. So they would know, whoever was on watch this
cold morning, that Hob was gone, that Patterson was still alive and now alone in the
woods. A relief patrol would be leaving within twenty minutes of that signal, and a
runner carrying word to Prince Malcorn. Maybe the prince would or could do nothing
at this point, but the rule was that he had to know. Always.
Patterson Pine was glad HE was not a prince, imagine having to carry that
burden! But, as he searched the nearby woods for a place to make his stand, he
wouldn't have minded being back in town. The woods were looking unchancy right now,
especially for a man suddenly alone.
At least they were also well known to him, as to every Greenwarden. He knew
where he could put his back to a stone--a natural outcropping of bedrock, not a
worked stone moved in for reasons better not spoken out loud. It was the damned
ritual stones they had to watch out for, no way he would use one for shelter! And
then, he would wait.
He found his rock, made sure that he wouldn't be putting his back to a concealed
enemy, and settled down to the waiting.
Activity at the Greenwardens guildhouse was as intense as Patterson might have
wished. In this kind of situation, only veterans were sent out; today it would be
Woodwalker, Greengrove, and Stalking Horse. The younger members, who had rolled out
of bed when the alarm sounded, just like the rest, stood in a cluster off to one
side.
"We should be going, too," Jessalin muttered. "Hob was OUR teammate, one of US.
Gods, I can't believe she's dead!"
"She was a pain in the neck," Tree Shadow agreed. "In all our necks. But we
should get to help...avenge her or whatever. One of us should go, too. Not you,
Jess, you're too short for this snow. But I could go."
"They won't take you, or any of us," Jessalin said. "You heard them when we
asked. We lack 'depth of experience' in such matters."
Tree Shadow scowled. "If I follow them, by the time they realize I'm there, it
will be too late to send me back."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
What were you THINKING, Strada? How could you lose to me and stick me with the
column? How could you DO-- What, I'm on? Already? Eek!
Ah...citizens of Malcorn, greetings! Please stay out of the woods, as there is
a killer loose there, and we will be too busy hunting it to do search-and-rescue of
strayed hikers. Besides, hiking in the woods in the winter is a bad idea, and not
much fun. Stay home by the fire and drink mulled cider, okay?
Jessalin
SPY REPORT
Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for MALCORN. MVP award for SOMNAMBULANT?
DARK CREATION's proud of him after beating STRADA and getting 25 points. Talk about
yer big time losers! AZAZEL got smashed by DEANO, and lost 20 points! And I was
just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome FIERCE
TIGER. Aren't STARBASE 5 proud. (Oh, my.) I hear the top team insists all their
warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. BLOODSWORN
was the most avoided team. Is a 44-52-4 record really that scary? I don't know what
DARK CREATION's been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from
BLOODSWORN, that's fer sher. Can BLOODSWORN's VITAE be more popular than me? He was
challenged the most, but is that really the same?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you?
Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. MALCORN is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Its
been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

PERSONAL ADS
Fierce Tiger -- So! The truth comes out, you are in league with The Thing in the
Forest! All is known! (sigh) I really didn't want to die, you know. Not even
heroically in the forest, which I guess I get to do by transference. -- Ghost of Tree
Shadow
A Convicted Assassin? Who convicted him, and who is he said to have assassinated?
Maybe there were extenuating circumstances. Not if it was for money, but maybe it
was some personal vengeance? -- Periwinkle, feeling generous today for some weird
reason
Homunculus -- I was moved to kill you, on the principle that you MIGHT be in league
with the Thing, but then I thought, no, Jorja'd have a fit, and I really don't want
Jorja having a fit at me. Besides, despite your name, you don't look like a Forest
Thing. -- Patterson Pine
Indemos -- Glad to have you along, then. Er...you did pick up the point that you
have to fight Things in the woods first? -- Patterson Pine
P.S. Nah, we like it. And if you don't START with a meaning, why, we'll make one
for you! Be glad you're not facing our counterparts in Caleam, who are developing
the Great Arena Cookoff or some such based on their opponents' names.

The Council of Lords would like to propose a rule change in ADM and Primus. We
propose that Lord Protectors ranked "Grand Champions" and below (ADM) and "The Tower
Guard" and below (Primus) be allowed to fight in the Dark Arena. This would not
impact the top rankings or title match. Any managers who never got his fill or shot
at fighting Gateway monsters would have it as an option. We believe it might spark
some interest in the ADM/Primus realm for some managers. If interested, speak up in
the newsletters or on forums under the "rules changes" thread and let RSI know. This
could even be something to try for 12 months and then be re-evaluated. What say you,
managers of Ghea? -- The Icelord sends....
