Lord Malcorn's horse was big as a draft horse to carry the half-Shewish prince,
but it had no trouble keeping up with the lighter mounts of Uncle Wolf, Math op
Owain, and the Dark Stranger. Math told himself that the prince of even as small a
state as Malcorn could afford the best horse, but that didn't seem to cover the case.
The beast looked totally horse-like, after all, not a hint of anything Other about
it, so why did his eyes keep straying toward it? Maybe because the Thing ridden by
the Dark Stranger, which looked like a horse on casual glance but was plainly not one
if you looked closer, was wary of it. Perhaps even afraid of it.
And perhaps because puzzling over Malcorn's horse distracted him from worrying
about his comrade Redfox, who was going into the darkest of danger without him. It
was hard not to look back to see if Redfox was watching them ride away, see if Redfox
was still (so far) alive and well. He'd become fond of the Rirorni, though he
wouldn't have said so in public, and regarded him almost as a son.
Maybe he wasn't the only one who worried; nobody talked for an hour. The cold
and the silence pressed in, nothing but the crunching of snow under their horse's
hooves and the clack and crack of branches stirred by...the wind, most likely, in the
forest that lined the road. How far could they ride like this before it got to them?
"We turn here," Lord Malcorn said, pausing by a ford.
Math stared at the woods. There was no path beside this water that he could
see. "Ah, isn't this the straight road to Veastian, and then we turn and go north
along the Trier's shore road?"
"You may, if you wish, though I don't recommend it." Malcorn's horse turned in
response to a shift in the rider's weight. "I have business--urgent business--at the
lake from which this stream flows."
It seemed an unreasonable delay. Math looked at Uncle Wolf.
The old shaman was nodding. "I don't doubt it," he said. "But is this
something for which you want witnesses?"
"You won't see anything you shouldn't," Malcorn said, "and someone will see a
thing he needs to remember."
The Dark Stranger made a sound between a growl and a laugh. "I have not
forgotten," he said.
"Good. But we'll go by way of the lake anyway."
Cloudrider could feel the rope in his hand twitch and uncoil as Young Joan moved
to her right. He moved left, taking up more slack. He'd lost all sight and sound of
his companion before they had the rope all paid out. It really was darker here than
anywhere else he'd been in the Spirit Lands. So far. Unless it was an illusion,
too? Hmm, if he denied the darkness, maybe...no. That wouldn't work. The darkness
made it possible to deny the presence of trees with conviction, but impossible to
deny the lack of light. A trade-off. In his mind, the ghost of Nightwind spoke,
telling him that the darkness was real "in the ways that matter to you." Whatever
that meant. He sighed and began moving forward, feeling blindly for each step, even
though he wanted to run because Necroma was in trouble.
Cloudrider wished that Joan were closer, so he could see her, maybe talk to her,
to reassure himself that there was someone else alive here with him.
The ghost of Nightwind that rode in his mind sighed. "There is not someone else
alive here with you," he said. "Even if you were holding hands with her, it would
not be so. In this place, every living soul is alone."
Cloudrider suppressed a sigh of his own. Really, there were times when the
ghost was no help at all! "We could at least be alone together," he said. "Ah...
that didn't come out quite the way I meant it, but you know what I--"
"Yes, of course I do, but it wouldn't work here. Trust me on this. Joan was
right to separate, though I don't know how the rope will work."
"How it will WORK? Rope's a really straightforward sort of thing--"
"In the mortal world, yes. Here, maybe not. The rules are different."
"You keep SAYING that, but all it seems to mean is that things are harder here.
There aren't any differences that ever seem to work to our advantage," the gladiator
grumbled. "That's so unfair!"
"Nothing is 'fair' as you mean it, and if you want to talk about disadvantages,
try being a ghost in the mortal world," Nightwind advised him.
"Yeah, okay, sorry I blew up at you. But I'm worried about Necroma."
"You are not her keeper, and she is the one who chose to study the Dark Arts--"
"She didn't know what she was getting into. She's just a kid, really. She
didn't ask for this kind of stuff. I, we have to find her. She might need our
help!"

SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon MALCORN, for
I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! Practice pays for NECROPALYPSE, who pummelled THE
USEROUS MERCHANT, to pocket 16 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, WIND
RIDER was winsome, after beating SIMULACRUM and seeing him lose 8 points. Now I
can't insult BOSS, as he has gloriously dueled to the top. Oh great new
Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) So who's the team that's been
walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
So much to report, so little time!
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Oh hard! that to
strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat!
MALCORN, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Victory
Tavern. 'Til next time-- Novgorodny Vir

Lylyanna -- I am so glad this isn't an arena where everyone on the team has to take
up creative cooking. I'd much rather dance with you. Any chance of that? -- Wind

Thule -- You must be feeling right at home in this weather. I wish you weren't. Not
that I grudge you feeling at home in snow and ice, I grudge the snow and ice.
Yeahyeahyeah, it makes us appreciate the summer more. For about a week, and then we

Pie Eyed Piper -- I presume that, as the saying goes, you were "feeling no pain"
during that match. Good trick, except for the hangover. -- Redthorn
