Somewhere in the Spirit Lands:

Young Joan stopped and gave two tugs on the rope that connected her with
Cloudrider, signaling him to come to her. Then she waited. Stared at the "land"
around them. Nearly flat, poorly lit by the perpetual twilight of this region of the
Spirit Lands, thinly grown with some kind of knee-high brown ferns. She considered
it a textbook example of "drab and depressing." It was enough to put anyone off
dying, if this was where you had to go afterward.
Cloudrider appeared, seeming to condense out of the murky atmosphere. Plodding,
as though it took all his effort to put one foot in front of the next. He looked
depressed. "We aren't going to find Necroma this way," he said.
"No," Joan agreed. "I can't think of any way we can look for her with any hope
of finding her except by pure chance. We're wasting our time looking."
"I hate to just abandon her!"
"Yes, but we can't afford to throw away our time in a futile search. There are
important things we're supposed to be doing. Uncle Wolf is counting on us."
The young gladiator heaved a deep sigh. "I guess. But I really don't like it."
"Welcome to real life. If it helps, if we see anything that might be a clue to
finding Necroma while we're doing Uncle Wolf's business, we will pursue it."
"But not right away, I bet. Not if it means dropping Uncle Wolf's work
unfinished." Cloudrider glanced at Joan's face, then away. He'd seen the answer
there clearly enough. "I know Uncle Wolf's work is important, but I don't like
leaving Necroma on her own."
                      *** ***** *** ***** ***
Necroma didn't much like being on her own in this limbo, but in a way, it was
exhilarating. Whatever happened now would be her responsibility entirely. If she
did something right, it would be because she, personally, had thought of the right
thing to do and done it. Not because some teacher had told her what to do.
And she had thought of something to do. Whether it was right or not, only time
would tell. It was a spell she had never seen a use for until now, a spell of
summoning, in a way, but of summoning herself to the location of some other being,
instead of drawing that other to her own location.
She focused her thoughts on Cloudrider and began to chant in her mind.
Carefully, because the difference between this and the standard summoning resided in
two simple phrases, and if she got them wrong, Cloudrider would end up here in limbo
with her.

                                      SPY REPORT

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out MALCORN to see
what's new. MVP award for TITUS? PRAETORIAN GUARD's proud of him after beating
STARIEL and getting 22 points. Talk about yer major upsets! STARIEL's match with
TITUS cost her a loss of 15 points! Oh, wow, like the Duelmaster must be the most
popular guy in all MALCORN. He got the most challenges. (But what about proposals?)
Like, SIMULACRUM must be pretty gutsy! He challenged the Duelmaster from STARBASE 5.
Does this guy have a death wish or what! Was that a tear I saw in SIMULACRUM's eye,
as he took over Duelmastership? And wasn't VARPULIS RUKH fit to be tied! Is the
Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? STARBASE 5 was the most avoided team. Is a 265-262-9
record really that scary? I don't know what DARK CREATION's been doing. They
certainly haven't been accepting many fights from STARBASE 5, that's fer sher.
QRYSYS must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. He challenged AGATE.
8 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought QRYSYS showed
great skill and promise when he overcame AGATE. All right, so I slept through it!
Big deal!
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All MALCORN ever talks about is fighting!
Me, I'm more laid back. Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to
hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. Its
been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Simulacrum -- Well, dang. You stumped me on that one. -- Stump

Rexroth -- Speaking of "stumped," what's the significance of your name? I'm all at
sea on that one. -- Bristlecone

Qrysys -- I forget who at our guildhouse came up with the explanation first, but I
figure it makes sense to look at your name as a "leftover scrabble tile" deal. --
Agate

Varpulis Rukh -- I don't know if my graduation is about getting the last political
points (seems unlikely) or the "fifty-fight, must be a sandbagger" deal. But I'm
glad enough to call it a day and have no regret over giving you a win to go on with.
-- Wind Rider

Pie Eyed Piper -- Did you ever consider that pie is maybe not good for your eyes? At
least as an external application. Who knows about internally, probably really good
for you there. -- Redthorn

Our congratulations to Simulacrum. -- Jorja and the Greenwardens

Zeus -- I had the best intentions for writing more today, but I had to take the cat

P.S. The cat will be fine, but he may never forgive me for subjecting him to that.
