                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

             + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #34 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

The full moon made a path of silver light through the tomb, but beyond the inner
door there was darkness. Math stared at it for a long moment, then made the last
step, the one that would take him through. It was like pushing through a curtain, or
a soft wall. He felt it clinging to his face and hands, blocking his breath, and it
was like thick syrup so that he moved as through deep water. The taste of it was
fear, and it was cold as death. If they had to travel far like this--he didn't think
he would survive it.
One difficult step. Two. He never thought of turning back, knew without asking
that wouldn't work. Three. It was impossible to hold some course here in smothering
darkness, impossible to know if anyone was ahead of him still. Four. Amazing that
the horse was so steady. Five--
Torchlight, so bright after the darkness that it was blinding. Malcorn, Uncle
Wolf, the Dark Stranger, and their mounts. Malcorn and Wolf held torches. Math
gasped in relief. The others would see fear's shadow still on his face, but he
didn't care. Each of those three was in some way prepared for--if not this, things
of a similar nature. Mage Lord, for Malcorn was surely that now, shaman, and...
whatever the Stranger was. Whereas he, Math op Owain, was just an ordinary man.
Still, he was not a total coward, and he could at least assume the mask of
courage. He took a careful breath and looked around. A cave, or more precisely a
tunnel. The rock of the walls was rough and black and drank the torchlight, but the
floor was smooth and looked like some kind of tiles or paving stones. Red. Even,
blood-red. Not a pleasant image, but at least there WAS a floor. It sloped downward
ahead of them. Math did not look behind. He had a feeling the 'doorway' through
which they'd come was gone or closed and would rather not know that definitely.
Lord Malcorn met his eyes and nodded once. Math read a wordless message of
approval and straightened his back, squared his shoulders. When Malcorn led the way
down the tunnel, Math was ready to follow.
They seemed to be walking for a long time, hours maybe. Math would have sworn
to that, except... the torches didn't burn away. The possibility that only minutes
had passed since they entered this tunnel--no, he wouldn't believe that. Maybe not
hours, but more than a few minutes. Time was twisted here, that had to be the
answer.
Something ahead. At first he couldn't make out what, the torchlight didn't
reach far, and besides, it didn't make sense. A bridge, in this cave? The floor
ahead went from red to black, which must be a river or, well, something along that
line. With a bridge over it. A stone arch, it looked like, maybe four feet wide,
without railings or even curbs at the edges. Something on the bridge, nearer this
end than the center. How many times did an adventure begin with monsters guarding
the only way to get somewhere? He had a bad feeling about this--a fight on that
narrow bridge? Disaster waiting to happen.

             + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #35 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Lord Malcorn didn't hesitate, leading them straight to the beginning of the
bridge. Math looked at the river uneasily. Its nature was clear once they were
close to it. Though it was dark and glassy smooth, he could see things--he didn't
know what things and didn't want to--carried along by the current just under the
surface. Carried along fast. And it exhaled dampness, with curling wisps of mist
drifting above the water, and every solid thing in sight dripping moisture. The cold
made his bones ache.
The guardian of the span stepped closer to them, giving him a clearer view of it
than he would have liked. Part human or maybe ape, part mastiff with jaws that could
bite a man's head off, and a hint of something demonic as well. Its eyes glowed red.
Math found himself unable to laugh at the cliche. And, after all, what was a cliche
except something that had been right over and over again? It had claws to go with
its fangs, and just in case that wasn't enough, carried a pole-arm with a spearhead
on the end and couple of axe blades. Anything crossing that bridge would have to
deal with the guardian somehow.
And it sure looked like Lord Malcorn meant to cross the bridge.
Malcorn stopped right at the foot of the bridge, where another step would put
him on the span. He said something, his voice like thunder. Math hadn't expected to
understand it, but some of the words came clearly. Something about mutual respect
between defenders, and compelling needs, and ancient agreements. The words rolled
around in his head like dice in a cup, and he swayed where he stood.
Uncle Wolf was in front of him suddenly, holding a loosely woven cloth bag over
his nose and mouth. Math staggered and tried to bat it away. "Breathe!" the shaman
ordered.
The gladiator breathed, and air came through the cloth, scented with juniper.
He coughed and breathed in again. Blinked as his head cleared. "What...?"
"The vapors from the water will put you to sleep if you aren't prepared," Wolf
said. "My apologies, I had forgotten that you would have no defense against them
such as the rest of us do. Keep the juniper, breathe only through it until I tell
you differently."
Math nodded, holding the bag of juniper in place. "What about the horses?"
"It won't affect them, they aren't sufficiently self-conscious." The old shaman
turned back to watch the negotiation at the bridge.
Malcorn produced a large coin and held it up. Math supposed it was gold, but it
looked darker and redder, more like copper or even bronze.
The bridge guardian reached out to touch it but didn't grip the coin yet. It
spoke in a growling voice. "You and yours may pass by this token. But only one way.
No return across the bridge!"
"That is the agreement," Malcorn said. "We will abide by it." He laid the coin
in the guardian's hand.
The guardian took it and bowed low, then stepped to the side. Off the bridge.
Math blinked and pressed the juniper closer to his face. It looked like the guardian
was standing in mid-air above the river!
Malcorn bowed in return, not so low, maybe, but with obvious respect, and led
his horse onto the bridge. Wolf nudged the reluctant Dark Stranger forward, followed
it, and beckoned to Math to bring up the rear.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Thanks for all your support out there. It's not easy being the most popular and
doing PR all week. This has been a great run. Also thanks to Redthorn who paved the
way and wish you luck as well. I look forward to retirement. Maybe I'll take up
hiking. Or maybe widdling, which I thank Stump, as I wouldn't be proficient in this
art, as if it werent for him I'd have none. -- Avengelina

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! The boys at DARK CREATION left the arena
dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by STARBASE 5. Good show! STARBASE
5 had cause to celebrate, after STARLYN FYREFLY got 14 points by beating ROCKWOOD.
Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, STARLYN FYREFLY was winsome, after beating
ROCKWOOD and seeing him lose 12 points. Now I can't insult NECROPALYPSE, as she has
gloriously dueled to the top. Oh great new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on
too thick) Word has it one team in MALCORN is taking speech lessons to try to bore
their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas?
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have
fallen into an unconscious stupor.
Do not think spyreporting in MALCORN is the highlight of my life. Keep those
sands bloody and the buzzards fat! Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing
Spyreports for MALCORN? On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Jorja and The Greenwardens -- The Team and I would like to thank you for the many
kind words you share with us. We really look forward to hearing your comments. I
get too busy with things and I fail to find the time to reply. I apologize. Also
your story is great, we thank you for the effort and time that go into it. We can
hardly wait for the updates in each newsletter. -- Zeus

Stoneheart -- You couldn't find it in that petrified organ of yours to allow an
opportunity to let me try out my new weapon? How cold of you! -- Starlyn
P.S. At least you're living up to your name.

Stump -- Between the two of us we can start the 100 plus fight club! How exciting!
-- The Rukh

Necropalypse -- Jeez! You take things way too serious! Can't you see I'm too old
for this stuff. -- The Rukh

Qrysys -- Try me again when I'm sober, I'm more of a push over then. Come to think
of it, that may be a while. You better just get yourself a mug of ale. Perhaps you
too will get better then. -- The Piper

ODE TO A BRISTLECONE --
Bristlecone Bristlecone from which tree did you fall
You're tempting your fate now hear my call
Echoes around you feeling the pain
Lying there still no ground to gain
Fall down fall down fall down fast
It will soon be over and be in the past
And now that it's done and nowhere to go
Break open your shell your seeds you will sow
And the cycle of nature will all be restarted
Life of a Bristlecone is never half-hearted. -- Apok the Poet

Avengelina -- Drat! You stumped me with that one. -- Stump
P.S. Actually, I wouldn't have known what to do with the title, so it was probably
just as well

Rexroth -- You must have some Shewish blood to fight that well. -- Agate
P.S. Don't laugh! We were great warriors once and will be again when the time is
right. We're just training and waiting for the Call.

Apok -- You had the style advantage and used it ruthlessly. Everyone knows that pine
trees are vulnerable to both saws and fire. -- Bristlecone, feeling singed

Troglodyte -- As entries to the arena go, that one pleased me. It would further
please me to buy you a drink, hairy little runt though you are. -- Rockwood

Starlyn Fyrefly -- Madam, you are beyond question a shapely little thing, and if I
had not sworn off emotional entanglements for the duration, I would be eager for
maximum entanglement with you. -- Stoneheart

We congratulate Avengelina, well done! -- Jorja and the Greenwardens

Avengelina -- I don't know anything about lands! Do I look like a realtor to you?
Of course not. When Lord Malcorn returns, he might have something that would serve
as a gift in recognition of your graduation, I suppose. What would you LIKE? If, I
mean, I were to turn out the old storage chests in the arena's attic. -- Arenamaster

Greetings All -- This is Vincent Michaels, "the Rake", mgr. of the Stormbringers out
of DM 33 Niatoli Island, back after a relatively long layoff. I come back to my
arena to find only two other teams there. Terrible! I'm calling on all you managers
out there who have inactive teams in Niatoli to put them back in the game. Also,
anyone else who wants to come check out our little island are welcome. Good food and
a lot of good gambling, and you will have a chance to smack around Gen. GirlPants and
his band of Ravaged Queens. Great fun. Come one, come all!
