Elsewhere:
The old shaman Wolf half-carried Lord Malcorn to the far bank of the underground
river. Math op Owain followed with the horses, trying not to look down. Whatever
flowed under narrow bridge was nothing for a mortal to stare at. He batted at the
swirling vapors with one hand. Nothing for a mortal to breathe, either, he was sure.
And the bridge seemed to be going on forever, seemed a lot longer than it had
looked from the bank behind them. Math had known roads like that, roads between
towns that were no more than ten miles apart, and it took hours, it took DAYS to
cover that distance. It was probably some kind of magic, some kind of wrinkle in
either space or time. The sort of thing you put up with because you had no real
choice, but... by all the gods, not HERE.
His horse nudged him forward, hard, which forced him to open his eyes. When had
he shut them? And on that bridge...! But, oh blessedness, the end of the bridge was
in front of him. One step, maybe two, and he would have... well, the ledge beyond
was stone and seemed the same as the stone of the bridge, but at least there was no
visible mysterious river beneath it. Math stepped off the bridge and sighed with
relief. If there's been a single blade of mortal grass, he would have kissed.
Math shook himself and turned to Uncle Wolf. "What happened back there?"
The old shaman snorted. "The Stranger lost its nerve."
"There was more to it than--"
"Of course there was, but we may never know the details," Malcorn said. "The
Stranger was guilty of something and feared discovery and punishment. If it had
cooperated, I would have argued for clemency before the High Powers, but... it is
gone now. Wholly gone. None return from the Hounds."
Math turned his back on the river. He didn't want to look at it or think about
the 'hounds' that had condensed in the steam. "What do we do now?"
"We go on. Having the Stranger with us might have made the journey easier, but
we can do without. We must," Lord Malcorn said. "I must close the Door that was
opened in Kurukar, and I will need the two of you to guard my back while I do it."
In the Spirit Land:
Necroma released her hold on Cloudrider and stepped back, puzzled. More than
puzzled. "When did you become a woman?" she asked.
He--she--looked down, blushing. "It just happened."
"Probably due to a death-and-resurrection in the Living World," Young Joan
added.
"It's confusing," Cloudrider muttered.
"It'll take some getting used to," Necroma agreed. Privately, she regretted the
disappearance of Cloudrider-as-young-man, but no point in moaning about it. "What
are we supposed to be doing?"
"Good question," Joan said. "We keep getting distracted, and everything that
has happened blurs what we should be remembering." She sighed and squinted at the
featureless horizon. After a moment, she said, "The problem was rampant necromancy."
Neither of them looked at Necroma, and she herself... wondered what she was
supposed to say. Yes, she was trained as a necromancer. She hadn't started to
practice yet, and she didn't think she'd be "rampant"--whatever that meant--when she
did. And she couldn't reasonably be expected to answer for all the other
necromancers in the world and what they did or did not do.
"Rampant necromancy," Joan repeated. "Violation of whatever Rules apply to the
movement of souls and the opening or closing of Gates to various parts of the Spirit
Lands. I think...." She sighed again. "I'm trying to think, anyway. We're
supposed to be identifying trouble points from this side, while others are supposed
to be trying to identify them from the other side. At least, I think that's what
we're supposed to be doing here." She looked at her two companions. "Any
suggestions?"
"You said the landscape here is suggestible, right? That it's shaped by our
expectations."
Joan and Necroma both looked at Cloudrider, surprised by the comment. Up to
now, he--now she--had been just a follower. An extra pair of hands, not someone who
had ideas.
"Yes," Necroma said. "That's what I was taught. Some parts of the Spirit Land
are, well, fixed, but others aren't."
Cloudrider frowned at the horizon, a ridge not far away. "I expect we'll find
the center of the problem right over that ridge."
Young Joan threw up her hands as though to stop him. Her. "Rider! You
shouldn't--"
A shiver passed over the land around them, not something they could see, just a
feeling in the back of the mind, maybe a ripple at the corner of an glance.
"That's done it," Necroma said. "We are really, truly in trouble here, because
the worst heart of the problem is right over that ridge. And if we turn around and
go the other way, it will be right over the other ridge. THINK before you say things
here!"
"I did think," Cloudrider said. "I thought I'd like to get this taken care of.
No more distractions."
Joan blew out her breathin a sigh. "I feel that, too,, but I wouldn't have
chosen to start with the worst part first. Still, it's done. Let's go."

SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in MALCORN this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. It seems the training can make the difference, as
GREENWARDENS is pushed out of top team by STARBASE 5, who came from 2nd with a 4-0-0
this turn. And let's see, ROCKWOOD fought STARIEL and gained 13 points and
contributed to GREENWARDENS' 1-4-0. STARIEL has lost to ROCKWOOD, falling 14 points,
while helping make DARK CREATION a 4-1-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the
Duelmaster have failed, and REXROTH remains MALCORN's top warrior for another turn.
Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that Drake's
Barbecue uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. We'd like to remind certain teams
not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered
rude.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Always good to rest in MALCORN, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in MALCORN again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Troglodyte -- Ah, but we fought on my ground, the mountaintop. I can see how that

Cybermancer -- Listen, Jorja's got this problem with the internet connection, maybe
you could lend a hand? A word or two of advice, maybe? -- Agate
P.S. She's really gnarly right now because of it.
Starlyn Fyrefly -- A little cold already for them now. Unseasonable, as they say,
but then what do they know? Perhaps in the greater scheme of things, a cool August
and September this year is appropriate. -- Stonebow
P.S. Probably global warming.
Mistress -- I hate it when people loom over me like that. I know that someone makes
shoes with "lifts" in them to make people look taller, I wonder if they make shoes
with "drops" to make people look shorter? -- Silverbird
