--Aboard Starbase 5--
"Mortikhan, we a have a situation! Ready the glider and set your coordinates to
sector V7. A ship was spotted sitting idle. We tried communicating, but they're not
responding. It could mean trouble."
"Sir, do we have someone on Kyrillium who can investigate this, or perhaps
supply back up if we need it?"
"No. Only laborers, and I don't want to create a panic. We need our operations
there to continue until we know what we are dealing with."
"Captain Burk, if this vessel is already at V7, it may be too late to do
anything. Even at hyper speeds it will take us weeks to get there."
"Ahh Mortikhan, you underestimate what our alliance with the good Doctor can do
for us in such occasions. I've already contacted him and he has arranged the means
of travel, in his own way. Doc West was kind enough to send some help."
"Uh, I don't think I like the sound of this Sir. Don't get me wrong, I think
the Doctor is a genius and I'm glad to have him on our side, but between you and me,
some of his creations are just plain dark and it creeps me out. Not to mention
whatever he sends is like a bag of mixed tricks, you never know what you're going to
get."
"You should be a bit more grateful, Mortikhan. He is a loyal ally, one who we
need. You have no idea of his limitations and his reasoning behind what he decides
to send. If I were you, I wouldn't question him in the future. Just follow his
rules and you'll be fine. Now go get Rotor, ready the glider and meet me out on the
docking station."
--Out on the Docking Station--
"Our scientists have finished cloning the pheremone in which we received from
Doc West. He says we can use it to mask our scent. Spray it on and let's begin the
summoning. Now as soon as I call this creature it's going to get pulled through a
worm hole from wherever it was, and it's not going to be happy about that. If we're
lucky it will allow enough time for us to negotiate with it. Normally it will kill
us and leave, but the pheremone will trick it into thinking we are one of its kind.
That alone won't keep us safe, for it could easily kill us just for inconveniencing
it. But I'm hoping it at least hears what we have to offer."
"Just one question Sir. What if it doesn't like what we offer?"
"Then it eats us and leaves. Now stay back and don't do anything rash."

The Spirit Lands:
The three gladiators approached the ridge with trepidation. None of them had a
clear picture of what might be the "worst" that the Spirit Lands could throw at them,
but they were about to find out and not looking forward to it. It was a long climb,
steeper than it had looked at first--
"We're making the climb harder because we so much don't want it to be over,"
Necroma muttered. "We could make this quick and easy...."
"Let's don't," Young Joan said. "There's no rush."
"There is a rush," Cloudrider countered. "I want this DONE with so I can get on
with my life."
"Too much rush," Joan said, "and you might be getting on with your death,
'Rider."
"No *rush*," Necroma said patiently, "but also no more delays and side-tracks."
"Who went rushing off to--" Cloudrider began.
"I made a mistake," the young necromancer said. "It happens. But I won't make
that one again." She turned from her companions to face the ridge again. "Let's get
on with it."
Cloudrider looked at Young Joan, who nodded. "She has a couple of good points,
'Rider. And why linger here on the slope? Whatever's over the ridge won't go away,
no matter how long we wait."
They started walking again, climbing the ridge again. As their determination to
get to the point hardened, the slope became gentler, easier to climb. And shorter.
And when they reached the top of the slope, it fell away in a sheer drop to a valley
full of shadows and movement and... a giant doorway standing against a cliff on the
opposite side. Both leaves of the door were opened out, flat against the cliff on
either side. What light there was showed dim and smoky red, unsteady, maybe like
torches made of wet wood. As they watched, they saw that the unsteadyness was
patterned, a heartbeat instead of flickering flames.
After several minutes of staring silently, Necroma asked, "Now what?"
Young Joan shrugged. "No idea. Maybe our companion ghosts know what we are
supposed to do...."
"Is yours still there?" Cloudrider asked. "I haven't felt Nightwind since... I
don't know, but it's been a long time."
Joan closed her eyes and frowned. Opened them again. "No, she's gone, too. I
guess we're on our own."
"On our own, at the heart of the problem, with no idea what to do next?"
Cloudrider turned to stare at her. "If I wasn't here, too, I'd laugh."
"We're not alone," Necroma said. "We have each other. And just as a first
guess, that door... needs to be closed. It's the only obvious thing I can see from
here. And whether it's the door or not, we will have to get down there to do
anything."
"I am so totally not happy about this," Joan muttered. "Why did I agree to take
part?"
Since she seemed to be talking to herself, her companions ignored the question.
Cloudrider studied the cliff they stood on, then turned to Necroma. "I've been
trying to visualize a way down," she said, "but it isn't working."
"No... I think this valley is... not mutable. There will BE a way down, but
we'll have to find it."
"'This valley'," Young Joan said sharply. Her tone made it a question.
"Yes. I believe this to be the Valley of the Shadows. It is... a landmark in
the Spirit Lands." She moved back from the edge of the cliff. "And that is the Gate
of Hells."
Several minutes of silence.
Finally, Cloudrider said, "More than one hell?"
"Layers and layers of 'em," Necroma answered. "I don't think anybody's ever
come up with a way to count them theoretically, and anyone who's tried to do it
literally... hasn't come back."
The Silent Place near Zuwayza:
The thing inside the fence wasn't coming forward. Yet. Blackwind squinted at
it, trying to make out some kind of shape, get some idea where it might be
vulnerable. But the form was as unstable as smoke in a wind, except that it didn't
fade away, and if it had any weak spots, they didn't show. So it would have to be
the eyes, if it came to a fight. Maybe the thing would stay inside the fence. If it
did, Blackwind was prepared to leave it alone. If not... he would do whatever he
could to stop it.
He tried to look around without looking away from the gap in the fence, scanning
the area out of the corners of his eyes. No sign of Arhazul that he could see, but
maybe the demon was just... invisible? Not a comfortable thought. He shrugged.
What did comfort have to do with this? "Arhazul? Are you still with us?"
No answer.
Damn. It wasn't that he LIKED the demon, but it was useful to have someone with
a clue as to what was going on. Someone who could tell him things like, What was
this thing looking at him? How should he deal with it? Should he go into the Silent
Place after the kid? Well, he'd have to find his own answers. The thing was almost
certainly bad. If it put a wisp outside the fence, he'd attack it and hope that it
was vulnerable to steel. And no, going into the Silent Place under the current
curcumstances would be outstandingly dumb. He felt badly about the last, but without
some shadow of a notion where to look--not to mention what besides this cloudy thing
he might have to deal with-- It wouldn't help the kid if he just got himself killed.
Assuming the kid was still alive and needed help.
Something moved through the brush behind him, making twigs rub against each
other and leaves crackle underfoot.
Blackwind shifted sideways, half crouching, to a position from which he could
keep an eye on the gap in the fence and the place where the sounds were coming from.
At least, where he thought they were--
Agro, the reptilian gladiator from Lapur, emerged from the shadowy forest. He
looked around, taking in the Thing beyond the fence, and the stain that had been the
necromancer. Nodded. "It goes well," he said. "A night-hunter, Redfox thinks the
same one we began with, came to the main gate of this place. Redfox killed it. He
is holding the gate there against other creatures like that one," the Croc indicated
the Thing inside the fence. "They are not trying to get out anymore than this one
is."
"For now, anyway," Blackwind said.
"Yes. For now. With three of us and only two gateways, we can guard in
rotation and continue so for some time. But neither he nor I knows of a way to close
and seal the gate, and we cannot guard it forever without some relief. We hoped that
the demon would have some suggestion--?"
"He might, but he seems to be gone."
"Unfortunate. Then we must wait for the return of Redfox's manager Wolf, or
your Lord Malcorn, to deal with the gates."

SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of MALCORN! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. MARCUS caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested QREATED and was awarded 12 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, MARCUS put down QREATED,
causing it to lose 9 points of recognition in the process. This time victory fell to
the grasp of the usurper. All hail AGATE, Duelmaster of MALCORN! Would you believe
that over half of the old women in MALCORN seem to feel that they could fight better
than you gladiators?
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? DROVANITAR LIX must hold silent, for this week he was humbled in
the arena by a successful Bloodfeud won by QRYSYS of DARK CREATION. Hail QRYSYS for
thy victory! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but
sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in MALCORN. Nice atmosphere you have here! Ahh, but I can hear the spires
of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till we meet again, remember: a
turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its
prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes
