Burk raises a blackened horn to his lips and blows air through the horn of
Xixyxzyl. An alien shriek bellows through the mouth of the horn as it creates
several ripples in the air. The air starts to spiral and take shape of what appears
to be a black hole. In the black center a creature appears and steps out onto the
docking floor. Standing at seven foot tall it closely resembles a praying mantis,
with several shades of green with distinct markings of gray and brown. Its large
eyes look directly at Burk, then shifts its body to look to one side then the other.
As it tries to orient itself a low pitched clicking sound is emitted from its head.
Burk calmly states that it just granted him a short time to state his purpose. Burk
glances at Mortikhan and notices him getting nervous. With a hand gesture he signals
to remain calm. Burk, who understands most languages, speaks in his natural tongue
knowing that this creature can understand the language. As he was requesting its
services the creature shifts its weight and instantly springs into Mortikhan knocking
him down.
He crashes to the ground with great force and is pinned to the ground with
massive saw-like arms. It faces Burk and says that it will take this in exchange for
its services. Mortikhan, who appears to be in great pain, flips an energy impulse
switch in his palm which starts up a charge.
Burk notices this and quickly orders Mortikhan to stand down. He redirects his
attention to Xixyxzyl and states that there may be more bodies if that is what it
wants.
It pauses, knowing that it won't get much from a single half-cyborg. An audible
click is heard as it renegotiates a deal.
Burk states, "There is a chance of an enemy attack, we need your means of
travel. If there is a battle, you're free to take whoever or whatever fights against
us."
The thought of having such a large meal is enticing to the mantis-like creature
who then releases Mortikhan and steps away. Mortikhan drains the charge in his hand
so it does not alarm the creature.
"Okay, guys, load up and follow it out," says Burk. "Mortikhan, hold up." Burk
hands him a canister.
     "What's this?"
     "It's called a Mi-Go."
"Wait, let me guess, from Lovecraft, right?"
"He suggests not being around when you launch the canister. Here is the hand
launcher. You only get one shot, so use it wisely. Now load up and stay right
behind that bug. The hole is only open for a few seconds once it exits."
Mortikhan and Rotor board the glider. The creature looks over at the glider,
then its wings start to flutter, lifting it from the ground. It turns towards the
hole and darts in. The Cyborgs realize there is no time to delay. With the glider
already hovering Mortikhan flips the throttle and the ship flies into the worm hole.
Immediately the ships lights go dim and they loose all power. Their speed
increases radically as if some force is pulling them through. Streaks of white,
yellow and red fly by as they travel the tunnel-like hole. They can't see the
creature as it has pulled too far ahead of them. They start to wonder how far back
they are.
Mortikhan recalls his knowledge of worm holes. Once in one, you don't have many
options. All the electronics are down, as well as the thrusters. The ship loses all
power and you are at the mercy of the hole. There was once a story of a ship stuck
in a worm hole much like this one.
Once you're in, you can't turn around, you must go through it. Problem is you
never know if the exit will stay open long enough for you to get out. As the story
goes, a ship went in and never came out. Some say you just keep travelling the hole
for eternity and for as long as you're in the hole you will not age or succumb to any
illness. Another line of thought is that once the hole is closed it disappears
leaving you in whatever dimension or universe it used to cut through. Another risk
would be if another hole is opened and its path crosses yours, then the hole will
split into a 'Y'. You get a 50 percent chance of staying on course. However, if
your hole is closed it will just suck you into it, which will take you down the new
worm hole's path. Your chance of escaping may or may not be better, and you won't
know where the exit will leave you if you do get out.
After a while they see the Xixyxzyl ahead. They can see the end. They are
approaching at a rapid rate. The creature exits the hole and hovers close by. The
hole instantly begins to close. Mortikhan and Rotor look at the narrowing exit and
see that they are still too far away, and there is nothing to do but watch.

in another place:

Math op Owain, riding behind Lord Malcorn and Uncle Wolf, was trying to look in
every direction at once. His companions had assured him that there would be physical
threats, and physical threats were his business here. He felt inadequate to face
those probably-numerous threats alone, but what else was new? He had it to do.
Because he was looking around, he was the first to see three people--human-
looking people--scrambling down one side of the valley and waving their arms.
Probably shouting, but he couldn't hear anything except an endless waterfall/wildfire
sort of roar coming out of the doorway. "More gladiators!" he said, staring.
Remembering the problem, he looked to the sides and behind before turning back toward
them. "I recognize the one in the lead--Young Joan, from Morya--"
Uncle Wolf didn't look around, but he grunted in satisfaction. "Good. I
started some coming from another direction, glad they made it. You'll have help on
the defense, Math."
"That might make the difference," Math said. "I was a little worried about...
things." After a moment he added, "I can't watch everywhere at once."
Wolf glanced at him and smiled grimly. "If you'd had to do it alone, you would
have managed. I was in no doubt of that."
"I was," Math muttered. He surveyed the surroundings again. It seemed wrong,
too easy, that they should be able to ride up to the doorway unopposed. Not even
seeing anyone. Somewhere an ambush was waiting for them.

       + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Larkin here, with a report from the Winter Tourney. Okay, maybe this isn't
Atlantis, but it's somewhere warm, and if that isn't a beach, at least it's sand,
and, as advertised, there are drinks with umbrellas in them. And young women with a
lot of suntan showing. By the time you read this, the tourney will be over, but
while I'm writing it, the tourney is NOT over. And a lot of you guys reading this
won't have been able to go, anyway.
I'm interviewing Zalgor Prigg, one of the managers participating in the Old
Valamantis Bloodgames, and let me tell you, Old Valamantis is not a place you want to
hang around if you don't have to. It's rotten with magic, to begin with--Folstrom
magic, the blackest there is--and then it's got all this blood and violence on top of
it, and it makes for a dark and scary venue. Anything might rise out of the ruins
around the arena, summoned by the blood and the curses of the managers.
"Mr. Prigg, could you tell us why you--"
"It was the play on words," the manager said, overriding the question. "I
couldn't resist--the chance to call a Bloodgames team Phoenix, you know, the 'rising
from the ashes of death' business. Of course, then I had to change it to Phonetix,
but that's okay, keep people guessing."
"I've heard the Commission mages talking about that name, sir, and they seem
alarmed. One of them said the name was practically a spell in itself, used here."
"I heard. That's why I had to change it."
"Have you considered what might actually rise from the ashes and blood here as a
result?"
"Well, no, but that isn't my business, you know. I manage gladiators. Let the
mages worry about what pops in from some other dimension. Besides, what if nothing
happens?"
"But, sir, there have already been reports of zombie rats and tentacled monsters
lurking in the backs of the locker rooms! And someone is bound to consider that you
have a partial responsibility--"
"No," Prigg said, "I have no responsibility for that kind of thing. I'm no
magician, I haven't been reading forbidden tomes...." He paused, looking thoughtful.
"Maybe it was TigToad with his Obscure Lore...."
"I don't believe there's a team of that name in this Bloodgames--"
"No, not here. Earlier, in Veastian. He could have been, hmm, preparing for
this, opening contacts if not gates, stuff like that. Has anybody seen any Dark
Toads around?"
"Not until they've had six drinks with umbrellas in them. Tell me, sir, have
you given any thought to the moral implications of the Bloodgames?"
"What moral implications?" the manager asked. "This isn't about morals, it's
about survival. And the way to survive on the sands is to kill your opponents every
chance you get!"
     "Yes, but--"
"There's a reason they don't hold these contests up in Andoria," the manager
said sternly. "Good people in their ways, the Andorians, but they just aren't cut
out for this kind of grim business." He paused to listen to the roar of the crowds
jamming the ancient arena. Checked the marquee where slaves dangled from ropes and
updated the records of participants. Nodded, grimly satisfied. "Another death.
That's good--can't have too many survivors, or it cheapens the victory at the end."
     "But the death toll--"
"Bah! Don't get the idea that these gladiators are the flower of Alastarian
youth. The ones who enter the Bloodgames are the men with no hope. We offer them a
future they could never have dreamed of, but they have to work for it, sweat for it,
bleed for it, and sometimes die for it. The survivors..." he bared his teeth in a
grin that would not have looked out of place on a wolf, "they owe us EVERYTHING, and
they'll do anything to repay us."
     "But--"
"And besides," Zalgor Prigg went on, "if you really want to take up the moral
question, go talk to the Grey Wand. She's the one set this up, after all."
"I don't see the point, frankly. She's got plenty of Lord Protectors, and they
have longer training, skills polished and honed to a--"
"The Bloodgames victors, they're Her enforcers," Prigg said. "No polish, sure,
but when a dirty job needs doing, one of these guys will do it, and no questions
asked."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

What the heck? You aren't supposed to LOSE to me, Rexroth! This is what comes
of parrying with your face. Now *I* have to do a column, or at least "a few words
from the top." Like I'm trained in rhetoric and stuff? As if!
Well, um. Those of you who attended the tourney, I hope you all did well, even
though that isn't actually possible. I mean, someone had to lose, right? Still, I
hope it was someone from elsewhere. And if you didn't go, I hope you enjoyed the
not-going.

                                       Agate

                                      SPY REPORT

So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Hey everybody, watch out for STARLYN FYREFLY,
who flew up 19 points in the rankings after mashing QRYSYS like a melon. Keep your
eye on this gal. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands.
CYBERMANCER was beat by STONEBOW and drops 13 points. It's a proud day for the DARK
CREATION stable, as their warrior, STARIEL, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. Advice
to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the MALCORN arena.
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Knowing when to use the right tactics at
the proper time is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster.
Well, there's the manager of the MALCORN giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Okay, so I may not be the world's
best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Hasta la bye-bye.
(Loud choruses of 'Beat it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster

Apok -- I think you may be slacking on the job. I'm not bad, but I had understood
you to be better. What happened? -- Rockwood
P.S. Got tangled up with some of Dr. West's weirdness, perhaps?

Cybermancer -- Actually, if you'd asked for mercy, I'd've said, "Sure, why not?"
Since there's bound to be a time sooner or later when *I* am asking for mercy, and
I'd like to have a resasonable chance of getting it. -- Bristlecone

Mistress -- Of course you don't like hospitals. I heard of a vampire who enjoyed
hanging out there, but no one else finds it a rewarding experience. So how about,
when you get out, I'll buy you the finest dinner in town? -- Stonebow

This Karnhorn Spy dude is pathetic, as are so man of the low-ranking standbys. Works
for me. -- Silverbird
P.S. Plus it makes us an amazing and unexpected five-oh turn, which will please
Jorja, also a good thing.

Zeus -- Enjoyed your spotlight, keep it up! -- Jorja

Just a lick-and-a-promise this turn, time got away from me. More next time. -- the
