The Silent Place near Zuwayza:
Blackwind looked at the hole in the fence, and at the roiling darkness just
beyond it. The darkness looked back at him. Push through that... thing? That was
an idea that roused no enthusiasm at all.
"Ah, one moment, I will attend to that," Vekhirn said. He stepped between the
two gladiators and reached out, touching the bared blade that each held ready.
Muttered a few words under his breath. A musical *ting* and a wash of golden light
down each blade, bright as sunlight for a moment, then fading--not going away, but
like a cat crouching down in front of a mouse hole to wait. The mage stepped back.
"Most will not risk contact with that your blades now, they cannot abide the
sunlight, and those that you must fight will be injured by it as plain steel could
not not do. I call the favor of all gods upon you, for you are doing Their work. Go
now," he smiled a little, "before you think better of it."
Blackwind looked at the hole in the fence again and shrugged. The thing beyond
it had backed off, so... might as well do it if he was going to. He crouched a
little and turned sideways, leading with his sword, and slid through. His shoulders
brushed against one of the iron spear-shafts that formed the uprights of the fence,
his chest scraped across the next one that had been bent to make a passage. The dark
cloud moved farther away, its form boiling with agitation. The Malcornishman stepped
out of the way so Redfox could come through.
The Rirorni was bigger: taller, wider, thicker, and he got stuck. Struggled,
grunting and muttering what sounded like curses in (presumably) Rirorni. Blackwind
didn't feel inclined to take his eyes off the Thing facing them, but maybe he could
grab hold and pull...? Another mutter from the mage, and a deep *tung* from the
fence, and Redfox was sprawled at his feet, still swearing but inside the fence.
"Fare you well," the mage said behind them.
A soundless compression of the air, as of a large door closing. Blackwind
didn't have to look to know that the way back through the fence had been closed off.
Redfox came up beside him. "You've got the talisman, which way does it want us
to go?"
Blackwind held it up. It turned, twinkling, on the end of its chain, then
steadied and drifted forward and a little to the left, drawing the chain to an
unnatural angle. Toward the cloud thing, of course. Nothing was ever easy. The two
gladiators walked towards it, slow but steady, swords at the ready and eyes never
still.

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
MALCORN brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, GREENWARDENS, since DARK
CREATION took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Of course, we're
all terribly impressed to see CYBERMANCER win a fight and gain 17 points, terribly.
Tsk, tsk, QRYSYS beat STONEBOW and STONEBOW lost 11 points. You're breakin' my
heart. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as REXROTH takes the Title and
