"So, it's a barrier, a wall," Uncle Wolf mused, squinting at the air. He turned
his head to glance at Lord Malcorn, who was now standing ten feet away from him.
"Not quite an elemental, not quite a demon... how big is it? Can we separate and at
least one of us get around it while it blocks the other?"
Malcorn shrugged. "I don't like us dividing our forces, not even separating out
the gladiators to guard our backs, much less each of us moving and acting alone. But
if that's what it takes...." He moved a little farther to the side, keeping most of
his attention on the invisible entity that blocked their passage toward the Gate of
Hell.
Wolf resisted the urge to glance over his shoulder at the gladiators. They
would do the best they could, and it was even more dangerous for him to divide his
attention than his forces. And right now, his attention had to be on this Thing in
front of him. The rules governing air elementals in the Nether Realms were clear,
and it could not move without becoming visible, and perhaps not even then--so long as
he watched it closely. It was his attention that was pinning part of it to this
location, just as Malcorn's attention was pinning another part of it farther along.
How far could it stretch before Malcorn reached an end of it, or its patience
snapped? Air and fire elementals were not noted for their patience. Nor lesser
demons, come to that.
From the corner of his eye, Wolf saw that Malcorn had stopped moving sideways
and was angling forward, toward the Gate. He must have reached a corner. The old
shaman bared his teeth in a predator's grin and gathered all his will and knowledge
for whatever would happen next. Soon, now. Yes! A visible ripple in the Thing that
blocked their path. He hardened his concentration on it.
Words like hammer-blows. Malcorn wasn't shouting, but the words rolled out of
him like an avalanche. The power behind them-- Most people saw Lord Malcorn as big
and slow and friendly, ordinary, and maybe not too bright. They never guessed at
this side of the man. He had been born to hold the barrier that protected the normal
world from all the Realms Beyond. It was the gift and the responsibility of his
lineage, and he did it very well.
The Thing rippled again, the visible Gate beyond it dancing as through heat
waves, and something... cracked. The demon began to condense out of it. Spidery
limbs, fragile-looking iridescent wings, huge, glassy eyes. The kind of demon Wolf's
own teach had called a Mirage-Flitter. A natural choice, perhaps, if one wanted to
meld a demon with an air elemental, but the Flitter was weak in its own identity. A
pest rather than a dire threat. It shrieked, a thin keening at the upper edge of
audibility. Sharp as broken glass, but wild--whatever had been done to bind this
Flitter to the elemental had driven it mad.
More words from Malcorn, surrounded by the crackle and ring of shattering glass.
Faintly bluish fluid trickled down the Flitter's wings as it struggled to pull free
of the elemental that must have seemed like a prison to it. It shrieked again,
flailing with its bleeding wings.
Wolf lifted his sword, concentrated his power, and skewered the mad thing
through the heart. He was already in motion when he saw the trap that lurked
behind/within the Flitter, and it was much too late to stop.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Would you believe that my own teammates want me to sit out a fight in the arena
so that one of them can have a shot at the Iron Throne? That's not going to happen.
So Malcorn, you're stuck with me for a bit longer.
Not sure what the point of sending a convicted assassin to face me was, it's not
like I was going to kill him, I guess it was just to get some more use out of him
before making him face a warrior who actually uses weapons.
I'm going to go try my luck at this Tournament in a few days, not that I stand
much of a chance, but maybe I can learn a few more skills, I hear Lady Greywand cares
about your skills, not just your ability to win. Anyone else going from Malcorn, see
you there.
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of MALCORN! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0
record which DARK CREATION managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a
record will draw challengers! SOURWOOD caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested JIM and was awarded 13 points in recognition. In
one of the week's more notable duels, TERRASQUE put down STEVE, causing him to lose 5
points of recognition in the process. The city has turned out in honor of STONEBOW,
for with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest position in the city!
Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole
city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. MALCORN, city of gladiators!
Mighty among the names of thy guilds is DARK CREATION, a guild shunned and avoided by
many in the weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard
pressed to find any of TERMINUS last week. Busy avoiding DARK CREATION? Mighty
fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. TERRASQUE take warning!
You have more than a few enemies in MALCORN.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears
arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off
city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a
rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani

Stonebow -- Now that fight went a whole lot better than our first. Guess we need to
go for the tie breaker now. And yes, I am the label guy; my father is a paper
merchant. I apparently got named after some paper line and my brother, Varick, was
named after some street that he had a shop on. -- Avery
M. Chardinee -- Sorry about trying to bury you in the sand, I just got caught up in
the moment. -- Morgue
From a guy with a name like yours, the "bury in the sand" bit can feel...
ominous. -- Arenamaster Landong
Swordmage -- So are you some wielder of magic, or is it that the way you whirl about
your blade with such proficiency that it appears to be magic? -- Varick
Venomous Concubine -- I have a hard time understanding Miyamoto, but I believe he
thinks you are now his concubine because he beat you. -- Morgue
Sounds like as good a reason as any.
Avery -- Listen, my labels are curling! What do I do about this? Tell 'em to stop
eating bread crusts? -- Stonebow the Disconcerted
P.S. My momma used to say that eating bread crusts would make my hair curl. She was
a great woman, but in that, she was wrong and she KNEW it. I mean, she BAKED bread,
so she had to know that the crust wasn't a bit different from the rest except for
being over-cooked.
Steve -- You upset my fan. There is no fate too embarrassing for someone who does
that. -- Sourwood
Qreated -- Okay, sure, I understand you wanting to make a run for a winning record,
but I want to hang onto mine, too! We should fight other people and beat them right
and left, and then go out to dinner together, except for you being a golem. --
Honeysuckle
Some golems eat. They have to be fueled just as people do.
In the Dark -- Aren't we all, some days. -- Bobcat
P.S. I can usually see better than that in the dark. Drat.
Goremonger -- Nope, not buying any. It's too crude and viscereal. -- Silver Ghost
Quasil -- Absolutely. -- various Greenwardens
Varick -- Why not? I hear the food is good. -- Honeysuckle
