>)]H[(< + -----:----- + >)] Revolt in Veastian #11 [(< + -----:----- + >)]H[(<

The southeast Quarter of Veastian houses the poorest of Veastian's residents and
is often called "Black Serimnas" by the locals. Black Serimnas refers to the idols
of the nature goddess that once stood at major intersections, which had acquired a
dark patina from years of exposure to smoke and soot from the forges of the metal
foundries prevalent in the district. During the years of Karnhorn occupation the
idols have been removed to less conspicuous sites but the name persists. It is
perhaps inevitable that Veastian's revolt against Karnhorn rule would begin in that
sector. Those who live their lives in daily desperation and own virtually nothing
have little to lose.
The Karnhorn Navy kept strong garrisons in the Central and Western parts of the
city (the governmental offices and port respectively) but were stretched thin
throughout the residential districts. When a couple of street gangs formed an
alliance and massed their memberships in hope of adventure and loot they were joined
by a throng of like minded citizens. The small Karnhorn garrison was forced to take
shelter from hurled rocks and bottles behind a barricade. Seeing the garrison
powerless before them, the crowd became increasingly emboldened by its strength.
Unwilling to charge the barricade they tried to taunt the Karnhorns into a
precipitous attack. To entice the garrison out of its barricade, members of the
crowed began looting and setting fire to Karnhorn owned businesses. The sailors
could only stand and watch. Then the crowed heaped the ultimate indignity on the
Karnhorns. They broke into the local Temple of Kjarran, dragged an idol of the
Karnhorn god out into the street, covered it with oiled rags and prepared to set it
ablaze before the eyes of the enraged garrison. Whether the garrison would have
sortied out to certain death to avenge this insult will never be known because at
that moment a company of Marines arrived from the city center.
Sailors are never particularly comfortable in land combat; their training is
geared to fighting at sea while keeping control of the movement of their vessel.
Marines, on the other hand, are amateur sailors at best, but thoroughly trained in
war tactics on both sea and land. Every ship in the Karnhorn Navy has a Marine
contingent aboard, and in this case all of these contingents had been converged into
a single Marine unit with the express purpose of defending Karnhorn honor and
religion. The Marines formed into line behind the barricade, locked shields, pointed
their longspears murderously outward and began a deliberate advance in step against
the insurgents. With a cheer the sailors of the garrison formed a second line and
advanced out behind the Marines.
As always, trained fighters working together as a team had little difficulty
putting the individuals of the mob to flight. Quickly the formerly arrogant crowd
was transformed into a frightened mass. And with good reason. There is no greater
insult to a Karnhorn that the burning of an idol of his god by unbelievers. For that
offense the Marines and sailors gave no quarter. Those wounded by the Marines in the
front rank were put to the sword by the sailors coming up behind. Many were caught
and died where they stood simply because there was no room to run. Many others were
tramped in the ensuing panic and could only wait helplessly until the merciless spear
of a Marine or sword of a sailor put an end to their life.
By the time the other healers and I arrived on the scene there was little we
could do. We treated the few marines who had taken injuries, but as for the
insurgents--those who could not flee died. The Karnhorns advanced as far as the main
square of Black Serimnas where under orders from their officers they halted and took
up defensive positions. I estimated that about a hundred citizens had been killed,
though I suppose the exact number will never be known.
The images of the dead haunted me as I returned to the Jaydeite Temple. As far
as I was concerned, the rebellion had been crushed. Admiral Arkossa had been
triumphant. Veastian would now settle down uncomfortably to occupation and be
forcibly transformed in the image of the Empire. What choice did they have? It was
obvious that Arkossa's Marines were too potent a force to be defeated by a now
dispirited populace. I shook my head sadly. Perhaps this result had been
inevitable, but I couldn't help feeling pity for those who would have to live out
their lives with a foreign yoke around their necks.
I was shaken out of my thoughts when two familiar hands grasped my shoulders
from behind. "Come with me, Boz. Kyreses needs your help," said Thystle urgently.
"I was there at the battle, if you can call it that," I answered. "Arkossa has
won. If Kyreses needs help escaping from the city, perhaps I can help. There's been
too much bloodshed already."
Thystle smiled grimly. "It's a good thing you're a priest and not a general.
You think the war is over after the first skirmish. It's not. No one is beaten
yet."
"Perhaps I should be a general then. I'd give up now--stop the killing and
negotiate a peace."
"There's no peace without justice, Boz. You should understand that. Arkossa's
rule would destroy this city by burying everything good that the Shews and Harkenes
have to offer and replace it with a smoldering hatred. The insurgents would destroy
this city by burying every improvement the Karnhorns have made. Veastian is not a
Karnhorn city, but it's not Shewish or Harkene anymore either. Only Kyreses has the
strength and vision to bring all those elements together. Your friends Father Vartan
and A'Krill have realized that, and now I've come to realize it too. I came here to
ask you to join us."
"But Kyreses' operation is smuggling black kughas into the Empire," I exclaimed,
recalling my conversation with Arkossa. "It seems to me that we are merely replacing
one evil with another."
Thystle didn't answer the question directly but looked deep into my eyes. "I'm
not offering you perfection--just the best option available. Look, things are about
to move quickly and I want you on my side when they do. If you'd rather stay neutral
or get out of town I'll understand, but if you're going to help Kyreses we need you
right now. No more time to ponder. Are you with us?"
My manager, Jack Wolfspider, always said that I might have had a brilliant
career in the advanced arenas if it weren't for my lack of decisiveness. Minus four
he used to call it. I wanted more information. I needed time to ponder the options.
How was I supposed to make a decision based on so little evidence?
"Let's go," I heard myself saying. "I'll do what I can to help restore
Kyreses."
Thystle leaned forward and gave me a kiss. "That's what I love about you, Boz.
You have conviction. Quick, follow me."
I followed Thystle to the basement where she located the secret exit I had been
unable to find earlier. I followed her out through the streets at a jog. "That's
what I love about you, Boz?" she had said. Did that mean...?

     >)]H[(< + -----:----- + >)] The Free Cities #59 [(< + -----:----- + >)]H[(<

On the coast north of Zukal:

The half hour it took for Harlund to return with his rowboat seemed a lot
longer. Ghenis had finished his examination of the tracks and returned to the beach
to stare again at Veleks' body on the rock. He was reasonably sure that the running
footsteps belonged to his thief, Veleks. But the hoofmarks.... Long and narrow,
almost triangular in outline, and as deep as those made by a galloping horse carrying
a fully armored knight. He didn't like the possibilities those tracks hinted at. If
they didn't come from a native and natural beast, what then?
The rumor was that magic was in a state of major decline due to something or
other--not that he depended on magic for anything important. He would have expected
that to mean that interdimensional Gates couldn't be opened. But what if the reverse
was the case, and it meant that Gates couldn't be held shut? What if they could--
should--expect a growing flood of alien creatures, maybe even another Chaos war? He
didn't want to think it might be coming to that, but no intelligent, practical man
denied a possibility just because he didn't like it. And Ghenis hoped that he was
both intelligent and practical. He frowned at Harlund, who was rowing slowly closer
along the shore. He'd have to question the beach walker, and from what he'd seen,
Harlund would demand money just to listen, and maybe more to answer. Greedy wretch.
Ghenis climbed into the rowboat and sat where Harlund directed him. The water
was cold, he could feel the chill coming up through the bottom of the boat. And
clearer than he'd expected. Not that there was anything of interest to see on the
muddy bottom. A rock or two, algae furred sticks...a crisp, green curve with a line
of bright gold showing? He leaned over to look more closely.
"You trying to tip us over?" Harlund demanded.
"I thought I saw something down there." He twisted to look back as the beach
walker kept rowing.
Harlund glanced at the shore, straight back and to either side. "You probably
did," he said finally. "This must be near enough to where the _Light of Els_ went
down."
"Should we mark the place so you can salvage--?"
"I wouldn't touch anything out of that ship," the beach walker said flatly.
"Nor would anyone else on this coast. In the two hundred or more years since the
_Light_ sank, I don't think anyone's touched so much as a piece of driftwood from
it."
Ghenis raised his eyebrows but asked no more questions. He didn't think Harlund
would answer them, and better not to show too much interest. But when he got back to
Zukal, he would find out all he could about a ship named the _Light of Els_. He
returned his attention to the bottom sliding past under them. There might be
something he could use down there.
As they neared the rock, the bottom fell away into opaque depths. Ten feet,
Harlund had said, but for all he could see, it might as easily have been a hundred.
He looked at Veleks and saw that the thief was moving a little. Still alive?
Amazing. And gratifying. Veleks could answer some questions, then. He was looking
forward to that.

Ibizond, between Murska and Korga:

The news from the east was confused, more rumor than definite report, but to
Lord Protectors with time on their hands, rumor was enough. Aghtamar and Zilla, both
Korgans who had trained in Veastian, hatched the idea between them: that they should
go east toward Zuwayza and find out what really was going on. There might be action,
and action was something lacking in their lives since graduation. Fist of Kjarran, a
Zuwayzan visiting the team Korgan Crusade, decided that his duty was to go with them:
there would be a chance to serve the Glorious Empire and acquire merit in the eyes of
Kjarran and His Daughter Jayde.
The journey south from Veastian to Ibizond, a matter of some thirty miles, was
straightforward but tedious. Mile after mile of forest, with nothing but the
possibility of a wild Shew to break the monotony, was not exciting. And apparently
all the wild Shews were hanging out around Veastian and contributing to the troubles
there, rather than keeping travelers from falling asleep on the road to the south.
Ibizond itself, on the main traders' road from Zuwayza and Malcorn to Murska and
Zensu was bigger than Korga but much like it. The population was a mixture of
Karnhorn types and Harkeny, the houses were built of stone and logs, and the
government was treading a careful line between independence and Karnhorn domination.
They reached it just before sunset.
Fist of Kjarran looked at the wooden palisade critically. "That might stop the
Shews," he said, "but any day the Glorious Empire truly wants to take Ibizond, it
will fall. No two ways about that."
Zilla snorted. "Korga wasn't a pushover, what makes you think Ibizond would
be?"
"The Glorious Empire needs Ibizond," Fist said calmly. "Therefore, at the right
time it will take Ibizond." He shrugged. "But not today." He looked around the
main plaza curiously. "Let's find someplace to eat and then keep going. We could
make it to Korga tonight, I bet."
"Too far," Zilla said. "Close to thirty miles, and it's hilly."
"And you'd do well not to travel after dark," someone said behind them.
All three spun around, hands going to their swords but not drawing. The man
behind them was tall, with gray-streaked reddish brown hair and the indefinable but
unmistakable air of a gladiator.
"Me and Zilla grew up around Korga," Aghtamar said. "We know the area. And
we're all gladiators, Lord Protectors. Sure, there's more risk at night than by day,
but--"
"There are new problems on the road," the man said. "My name's Cadal, gladiator
from Murska, and I'd be glad to tell you about them. The food at the Red Cow is
good," he added, gesturing toward a modest inn. "I'll buy dinner. And then I have a
proposition for you."

Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for WILLAF. I talked to BLACKHEART'S AXE's
manager before the fights. He said, "We're gonna do good." And look at this:
4-1-1! Psychic, or what! Talk about hot teams! SILK AND STEEL goes out, the very
first time, and goes 4-1-0! Like, what do you guys eat for breakfast? MVP award for
MANAGER TC'S? IT'S JUST WRONG's proud of him after beating VRYCE and getting 16
points. Talk about yer big time losers! VRYCE got smashed by MANAGER TC'S, and lost
12 points! Like COLOR ME's GINGER BROWN is sweating since she got challenged by
Duelmaster HU MI! And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!)
Oh well, welcome GINGER BROWN. Aren't COLOR ME proud. (Oh, my.) Is the Duelmaster
really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. MAXIMUM RESULTS was WILLAF's most avoided team. Is there some
award for that? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are COLOR ME? MAXIMUM RESULTS, an
easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation! Like,
is ED REDBONE popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of WILLAF! He's
got a 5-9-0, is that good?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All WILLAF ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. I hear WYLDERNESS WYLD sent POLLAR BARE to the Dark Arena.
What, is that like not well-lit, or what? Hey you guys, don't you think your
families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop.
Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte

Ima Maroon -- Hey, ya got dat right. -- Bubu

O Pun -- Grumble. -- Jho Kar

Chocconut -- Ar har har!!! -- Baka

Kurohana -- So seals my doom. -- Hu Du

All -- Please help me welcome six new teams to Willaf this turn. Friends I'm hoping
will enjoy Duelmasters as much as I have in the past. -- Rian/Vhagar

Well, it took a year, but finally Way of the Blade 1 completed the long journey from
Vithicar to Willaf, but received a less than warm welcome here! Ah well, I'll blame
it on jet-lag. -- Vhagar

Moonjumper -- Thank you for the warm greeting. Incredibly sorry about Punk K
Tillius. I gave Resh specific instructions to allow a dignified surrender, but
unfortunately he disregarded my wishes. He has been chastised. -- Vhagar

Pun Dat -- Hey, wait a second. You're Artemis's favorite opponent. He's a little
annoyed at me, but wanted me to let you know that he will be back, after the FtF. He
apparently thinks he needs to test the Adepts waters as opposed to the Champions.
Now...where's that N.D. Grasse.... -- Pa Ell

Kung-Fu Master -- HEY! What the heck was that? I'll Kung-Fu you, buddy! Actually,
if there's anyway to avoid you, I'd certainly do it. *rubs his aching head,
muttering about filthy martial arts and losing a perfect record* -- Vryce

Osksi Noble -- You don't fight much better than your brother did in Vithicar. You
should stick with *betting* on warriors, as opposed to playing as one. -- Damien

Ed Redbone -- Okay, so that's how we're gonna play? You beat me until I cry and
crawl away? Alright, I see. Thanks for the good ol' Willaf Welcome. -- Hesseth

Sacraficed -- Oooh. I almost got the jump on you. But I do appreciate you showing
me how to better harness my inner powers (and showing me a glimpse of my innards). --
Tarex

Jho Kar -- I didn't appreciate your jhoke about who would win the fight, at least,
not until the end, when *I* won. Then it was much better. -- O. Pun

Baka -- Well, we were a pair! You didn't have any milk of human kindness, or you
wouldn't have hit me so many times, and I didn't have any milk of the coconut, and we
were just a milkless outfit entirely. Which isn't to do with anything, but life is
like that, and so are personals, sometimes. -- Chocconut

Hu Mi -- Hu else? -- N.D. Grasse

Pa Ell -- (sigh) Good fight. -- Pun Dat

Resh -- But I didn't want you to make it a death match. Shouldn't I have a say in
that, too? -- Ghost of Pun K Tillius

Ghoti -- It has always been so, of course. -- Moonjumper

Annie Pinkley -- There was a warrior in Aruak City who got sent to the Dark Arena
five times before she graduated. Look upon it as a challenge to better her record?
-- Moonjumper

30 April 2003
All -- Remember to put your arena number on your strategy sheets. Strategies turned
in without an arena number run the risk of missing the turn. -- NAIEI
