In the vicinity of Willaf:
"I'd still feel better if I could see some way through into the cliff," Old Gold
said. "I don't WANT to smash into a wall of rock! And what's become of the
monsters? They were all over the place a little while ago."
"You would have to mention that," the Chardinee muttered, staring around
uneasily.
"For perhaps the same reason, whatever that is, they don't seem to be able to
come after us any more than the lightning," Ongus said. "I don't mind at all. I
never did like tentacles, and water monsters have too many."
"Don't SAY those things!" the Chardinee snarled. He pointed off to one side,
where something monstrous was skimming toward them.
It lifted from the water with a smooth heave and sailed toward them, looking a
little like a cloak blown on the wind, except that it wasn't flapping. Flat and
vaguely triangular, bigger than their rowboat. Old Gold didn't have the words to
name or describe it clearly, but he knew it was hostile, monstrous, and intelligent
enough to do them damage. Heck, simply by landing on their little boat, it could do
them damage. Grave harm. Sink them, even. And headed right for their little boat.
Old Gold muttered several words that would not have been accepted for
publication in a family periodical and grabbed his oar. As the monster sailed
closer, it could be seen that it was a lot bigger than their boat, and that its mouth
was a yard wide and filled impressive fangs. It could probably, did probably, eat
people whole. As its course slanted down toward the rowboat, Old Gold bashed it in
the nose with his oar. This knocked it off course. The Chardinee snatched up the
other oar and began to beat at the monster also. Its level stance wobbled, and then
it slid sideways and into the water with a modest splash.
Old Gold and the Chardinee stared at each other, but before they could utter
congratulations, the Kung-Fu Master said, "It will be back."
They both stared at him, instead.
He shrugged. "There was no serious injury done, except to its image and its
pride. A monster cannot allow itself to appear ridiculous, and it must now destroy
us for PERSONAL reasons, rather than 'just part of the job'."
"You're saying that we shouldn't have hit it?" Old Gold demanded.
"No, or it would have destroyed us then. This is what is technically known as a
lose/lose situation, unless another factor intervenes."
"Oh, that's GREAT, that's JUST what I wanted to hear," Old Gold snapped. He had
a two-handed grip on his oar as though it was a flail, and he was scanning the
surface of the water around them with a determined expression.
"It is always best to know the truth, however bleak," the Kung-Fu Master said
calmly. "Then one can lay useful plans. Viewing illusion, this is not possible."
"Yeah, but with illusion, we'd at least have hope!" Chardinee said.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
It's my turn to talk and I've got some things to say. You think that Yelling
Yamamoto Yahoo rants and raves? Well, get this.
Downright unfair! Wrong! Cheaters! Donkey Dungsters! That's what I think of
those bozos running that thing they call "Commission". Let me give you a list of
real problems and gripes, and discriminations, and cheats, and @#!*#!@*&^!%^@!
1. Every team rollup (recruit) is not a double 21.
2. They don't give neck rubs at Faces like Suz did.
3. Lord Protectors don't stay dead.
4. There are no good weapons like the trident and the shotgun.
5. Duelmasters are expected to write columns.
6. Managers are allowed to be friendly and have alliances.
7. Discrimination abounds against people like me because:
a. Size 3 is considered desirable.
b. Aimed blows are allowed to rule Primus.
c. Ambidextrous people are revered--indeed PAID to be such.
8. Skills can be bought by those megamanagers.
9. DM2? What? Dee Em Two; what kind of crapola is that name? I'm angry. Can
you understand that?
So shut up your listening to that Yama Mama, and get on my bandwagon to get
those Commission flunkies to fix the real problems in Alastari.
Golden Opportunity, A Real Duelmaster
SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
WILLAF brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. D.S.M.V. turned their 2-2-0 turn into
a 5th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on
hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see PUNH JENTLY win a fight
and gain 24 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, PUNH JENTLY beat KUROHANA and KUROHANA lost
14 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, WILLAF
may be getting bland, as GOLDEN ARCHES stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very
good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't
you, WILLAF?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. WILLAF,
I am losing what little hope I had in you. SHROUD IN MYSTERY the most avoided team?
What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like GOLDEN GLADIATORS avoided
them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph.
PURZ! was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM
insulted or feared? Heh, heh.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. I could say I saw this coming, but so
could anyone else. Anyway, this turn it came. KUROME's 13-15-4 has earned him the
Dark Arena. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing
these kinds of weapons?
There's got to be a better place in WILLAF to get a drink than The Swinging
Aardvark! Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so
nice! So nyaaah! Glad to see the back of this place-- Snide Clemens

Well, well, Shochu. You seem like a gladiator of passion, guts, and conviction, but
that Yamaha guy has got your brain twisted on backwards. Sorta like a Big Mac
without fries. It made things easy. Thanks for the challenge. -- Golden Arches,
Duelmaster
Kurohana -- That was a very finely executed scum job, pal. Great challenge and great
execution. -- Pot Of Gold
Leverage -- Some leverage needs longer to take affect. Like mine. It pays to be
patient. -- Golden Bear
Sully -- You had me worried there, but opportunity knocked, and I was ready. --
Golden Opportunity
That son-of-a-biscuit Convicted Thief tried to jump my claim, but I showed the
varmint! -- Klondike Gold
Jorja -- Boring?! How could one ever consider Senior Yamaha boring? Why, he's like
adding the Tabasco Sauce (and a few jalapenos) to the basic entree. -- Midas
(chuckling)
Punh -- You may be right about that us arches. Perhaps what your grandfather
advocated was better. We admire the wisdom of our Elders. Why when those Romans
built those arches, well, now, that was ancient wisdom at its finest. -- Golden
Arches
Why, Private Yamabushi, I am surprised that you are "stunned at the sheer level of
complete stupidity I'm dealing with here". Seems to me you and your family should be
used to such stupidity, since your parents, especially, have been dealing with it
from the day you were born. -- Midas, Golden Gladiators
Congratulations to The Muscle Men and The Power Legion for their great records. A
fine start, fellows. A golden one, indeed. -- Midas, Golden Gladiators
All -- We're back in the City of Battle! And we're surprised to find a feud going on
between Yamabushi vs. Golden Gladiators and Jorja! I'm sure the Golden Gladiators
can take care of themselves. I've run in several arenas with Jorja and found her to
be a wise and honorable manager. Yamabushi, what feud could you possibly have with
Jorja! Whatever it is, you are in the wrong. You should apologize to Jorja and ask
for her forgiveness. We Shrouders support Jorja in this feud. That means we're
coming for you, Yamabushi. -- Noachian, mgr. Shroud In Mystery.
Jorja -- We will gladly make challenges to Yamabushi on your behalf. May Kjarran
drink the blood of many Yamabushi warriors. -- Noachian, Servant of Kjarran
Kurome -- I was planning on graduating soon. But now I think I'll stick around
awhile just to torment you. I'm going to drive you to the Dark Arena. -- Persiflage
O. Fish -- What can I say. I haven't eaten in days and you looked oh so delicious.
-- Kore Surya
Golden Opportunity -- Persiflage wants a shot at you. Then maybe I'll try again. --
Sully
Kitten Kaboodle -- The whole bunch of you, eh? That doesn't make your victory any
less depressing, even if it makes it more explicable. -- Punh Jently
P.S. And a skill for each one in the pack, I see.
Kore Surya -- Well, darn! A Genuine Femme Fatale, and I didn't even last long enough
to savor your company. That's the story of my afterlife. -- Ghost of O. Fish
Gluteous Maximus -- You presented such a tempting target that for some peculiar
reason I couldn't bring myself to strike it. Maybe it was the slogan painted on your
armor, about kissing your donkey? Whatever, it was Dirty Pool! -- O Puncha
P.S. Clean up that pool! Filters, that's what you need. Filters!
Narcoleptic -- Odd, the way you just seemed to drift off to sleep every time I wasn't
actually hitting you. -- Ketl Physhe
P.S. And sometimes when I was.
Pot of Gold -- Or then again, it may have been due to ingrowing ineptitude. -- Punh
Jently
Protector Golden Arches -- What, you think we should give you a McJob just because
you've graduated? Or a McLandgrant? No, no, we couldn't do that. It would be
contrary to the evident intent of the Satrap, may his fries never get soggy. You get
a salute and a ticket on the Shuttle, and that's it. -- Tevik Zokharj, Non-
Distributor of Lands
