The surface under her hands and knees was moving irregularly with the turbulence of the water. Better not to start something until she could be half-way sure of her footing. She didn't know what she could do, but she knew that she WOULD DO something, and these monsters who planned to sacrifice her to something would regret it. Briefly. Then they'd be dead. Her fingers itched to smash them. Well, not her fingers, exactly. What she needed here was a blunt instrument. There must be one here somewhere, that was the good thing about blunt instruments. They were everywhere. Except on the roof of this cabin. She scanned her immediate surroundings. The light was odd in a way she didn't bother to define, but adequate. No blunt instruments. Just the sprawl of rope that had been used to tie her. She was a little surprised there was so much of it lying here beside her, but the reason didn't matter. She could use the rope as a flail, until she found something better. She picked that up, wrapping it around her hand a couple of times for a better grip. Strange rope, now that she was paying attention to it. Something about the fibers and the way it was twisted or whatever people did to make ropes. Very smooth. Like highly polished leather boots. Surely that wasn't normal for a rope? Not that it mattered. It would still do what she needed. One of the Black Ship's hooded and mysterious sailors came past the cabin, holding onto a railing fastened to the wall against the pitching and tossing of the deck. Fat lot of good THAT would do him! She swung her arm back and snapped it forward. There was a sound like cracking a whip as the rope uncurled, reached outward, and slashed at the hooded sailor. A sound like nine cats shrieking, and the sailor tipped back his head to scream louder, and its hood fell off, and it was...nothing like a human. Goldenrod lashed it again, going for the legs this time, to make sure it wouldn't try to follow her. It collapsed in a boneless huddle, writhing, but she didn't stay to watch. The deck wasn't steady yet, but the monsters had been alerted, so no more waiting. Which was good. She didn't feel any urge to wait. Action, that was what she wanted! There were two of the monsters at the front of the ship, and three at the back by the steering wheel. A moment of hesitation to think about it. The ones in front had crooked wizard staves, and little sparks of purple-green lightning flickered on their robes. Which meant they were the magicians. Or priests. Or maybe both at the same time. The baddest of the Bad Guys, anyway. They were the ones she wanted. She flipped the rope, which coiled itself neatly back into her hand, and started forward along the tilting deck. "So, we need 'another factor' to intervene, or we're sushi?" Old Gold asked. "It would help," Ongus Iron-hand said. "This is a thing that Kung-Fu teaches. If there is no way to win, change the rules, change the circumstances, change your approach." He squinted into the darkness. "We are very close to the cliff, and I see...perhaps an opening." "Perhaps? This fills me with such confidence!" M. Kawaldar Tisinju Chardinee said. "It's better than no opening," Old Gold said. "Shut up and row, because I don't see the Black Ship anymore, and if it went into a cave--" "Then we must arrive before the cave entrance closes again," the Kung-Fu Master said. "Quite so." He lifted the oar out of Chadinee's slack hands, took the proper position, and slipped the blade into the water, throwing his back into the stroke as Old Gold did the same on the other side. Old Gold could hear a low rumble under the shriek of the storm, and he suspected that this was the cave beginning to close. Ballads never mentioned things like "low rumbles," but it stood to reason that the stone wouldn't move--if that was what was happening--without sound, and a low rumble was exactly the right sound. He glanced over his shoulder toward the cliff. Yes, there WAS a slot of darkness that might be the entrance to a cave. Small, though. Hard to imagine how a whole ship, with a mast and everything, could go in. "The entrance is getting smaller," Chardinee said, in a voice that was doing the same. "Row harder, then," Old Gold panted. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 535): PUSS of ARENA FELINES (Garfield, mgr.) Well, here I am again. I maybe here for a while, so make yourselves comfortable. Thanks to Golden Opportunity for a very rewarding 43 minute fight. Three skills, that's tops for me. I just don't understand how the sitting Duelmaster can be the least popular fighter!? Who decides these things? I know you guys like me. You really, really like me. Kurome, you could have taken a little bit more tormenting before going to the dark arena. Now I have to find someone else to torment. Persiflage Shroud In Mystery Servant of Kjarran SPY REPORT Greetings, warriors of WILLAF! Once again I've been called out of retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Biff! Pow! WILLAF watched with glee as POWER LEGION got knocked off top spot by GOLDEN GLADIATORS! Try as it might, POT OF GOLD wasn't good enough at persuading PERSIFLAGE to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... How well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, SHROUD IN MYSTERY! Management must be dealin', as the boys at GOLDEN GLADIATORS ain't reelin'! SHROUD IN MYSTERY's mad! What do people see in PUNH JENTLY? His 17-19-0? PUNNY AMINALS ain't talkin', but he's got 71 points. PUNH JENTLY didn't quite know what to make of a challenge he received from KITTEN KABOODLE of ARENA FELINES, who is 20 points below him. KITTEN KABOODLE perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he bested PUNH JENTLY and ended up with 91 recognition points. Warriors of WILLAF unite. You have only your games to lose! How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to go... Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and good luck. If you want to have at him, do it for your own reasons. -- Jorja P.S. I suspect that the core of his objection to Golden Gladiators is that they've been scooping most of the free fights since they returned. 22 February 2006 The Olympics have arrived! The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a 'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be posted.
