In the vicinity of Willaf:

Goldenrod stayed in her four-point crouch on the roof of the cabin while the
ship was sucked through the opening into a cavern. The surface under her hands and
knees was moving irregularly with the turbulence of the water. Better not to start
something until she could be half-way sure of her footing. She didn't know what she
could do, but she knew that she WOULD DO something, and these monsters who planned to
sacrifice her to something would regret it. Briefly. Then they'd be dead. Her
fingers itched to smash them.
Well, not her fingers, exactly. What she needed here was a blunt instrument.
There must be one here somewhere, that was the good thing about blunt instruments.
They were everywhere. Except on the roof of this cabin. She scanned her immediate
surroundings. The light was odd in a way she didn't bother to define, but adequate.
No blunt instruments. Just the sprawl of rope that had been used to tie her. She
was a little surprised there was so much of it lying here beside her, but the reason
didn't matter. She could use the rope as a flail, until she found something better.
She picked that up, wrapping it around her hand a couple of times for a better grip.
Strange rope, now that she was paying attention to it. Something about the
fibers and the way it was twisted or whatever people did to make ropes. Very smooth.
Like highly polished leather boots. Surely that wasn't normal for a rope? Not that
it mattered. It would still do what she needed.
One of the Black Ship's hooded and mysterious sailors came past the cabin,
holding onto a railing fastened to the wall against the pitching and tossing of the
deck. Fat lot of good THAT would do him! She swung her arm back and snapped it
There was a sound like cracking a whip as the rope uncurled, reached outward,
and slashed at the hooded sailor. A sound like nine cats shrieking, and the sailor
tipped back his head to scream louder, and its hood fell off, and it was...nothing
like a human.
Goldenrod lashed it again, going for the legs this time, to make sure it
wouldn't try to follow her. It collapsed in a boneless huddle, writhing, but she
didn't stay to watch. The deck wasn't steady yet, but the monsters had been alerted,
so no more waiting. Which was good. She didn't feel any urge to wait. Action, that
was what she wanted!
There were two of the monsters at the front of the ship, and three at the back
by the steering wheel. A moment of hesitation to think about it. The ones in front
had crooked wizard staves, and little sparks of purple-green lightning flickered on
their robes. Which meant they were the magicians. Or priests. Or maybe both at the
same time. The baddest of the Bad Guys, anyway. They were the ones she wanted.
She flipped the rope, which coiled itself neatly back into her hand, and started
forward along the tilting deck.

"So, we need 'another factor' to intervene, or we're sushi?" Old Gold asked.
"It would help," Ongus Iron-hand said. "This is a thing that Kung-Fu teaches.
If there is no way to win, change the rules, change the circumstances, change your
approach." He squinted into the darkness. "We are very close to the cliff, and I
see...perhaps an opening."
"Perhaps? This fills me with such confidence!" M. Kawaldar Tisinju Chardinee
"It's better than no opening," Old Gold said. "Shut up and row, because I don't
see the Black Ship anymore, and if it went into a cave--"
"Then we must arrive before the cave entrance closes again," the Kung-Fu Master
said. "Quite so." He lifted the oar out of Chadinee's slack hands, took the proper
position, and slipped the blade into the water, throwing his back into the stroke as
Old Gold did the same on the other side.
Old Gold could hear a low rumble under the shriek of the storm, and he suspected
that this was the cave beginning to close. Ballads never mentioned things like "low
rumbles," but it stood to reason that the stone wouldn't move--if that was what was
happening--without sound, and a low rumble was exactly the right sound. He glanced
over his shoulder toward the cliff. Yes, there WAS a slot of darkness that might be
the entrance to a cave. Small, though. Hard to imagine how a whole ship, with a
mast and everything, could go in.
"The entrance is getting smaller," Chardinee said, in a voice that was doing the
"Row harder, then," Old Gold panted.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Well, here I am again. I maybe here for a while, so make yourselves comfortable.
Thanks to Golden Opportunity for a very rewarding 43 minute fight. Three skills,
that's tops for me. I just don't understand how the sitting Duelmaster can be the
least popular fighter!? Who decides these things? I know you guys like me. You
really, really like me. Kurome, you could have taken a little bit more tormenting
before going to the dark arena. Now I have to find someone else to torment.

Shroud In Mystery
Servant of Kjarran

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, warriors of WILLAF! Once again I've been called out of retirement
for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Biff! Pow! WILLAF watched with
glee as POWER LEGION got knocked off top spot by GOLDEN GLADIATORS! Try as it might,
POT OF GOLD wasn't good enough at persuading PERSIFLAGE to step down from the
Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I
hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... How well I know the
feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, SHROUD IN
MYSTERY! Management must be dealin', as the boys at GOLDEN GLADIATORS ain't reelin'!
SHROUD IN MYSTERY's mad! What do people see in PUNH JENTLY? His 17-19-0? PUNNY
AMINALS ain't talkin', but he's got 71 points. PUNH JENTLY didn't quite know what to
make of a challenge he received from KITTEN KABOODLE of ARENA FELINES, who is 20
points below him. KITTEN KABOODLE perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he bested
PUNH JENTLY and ended up with 91 recognition points.
Warriors of WILLAF unite. You have only your games to lose! How long have I
been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. Are you
as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

Persiflage -- That was a great fight with Golden Opportunity. Congrats on the
victory. Well done. A salute to The Duelmaster. -- Midas, Golden Gladiators

Talk about golden, those Power Rangers are surely beating up on everyone! Pure gold!
Wow! -- Midas

Old Gold with a "two handed grip on his oar as though it was a flail"? That old coot
wouldn't know how to hold a whiffle. All he could do was smoke and count gold and
fake a jab now and then with a dagger. -- Midas (chuckling at the Lord Protector's

Sully -- Persi had his shot, and he was splendiferously golden, but I don't think you
have enough in you to run with me, pal. -- Golden Opportunity

Sully -- Well we KNOW you couldn't run with me! -- Golden Arches

Noachian -- Feud? Nah. Just some noise making by the Yams & Co. Welcome back. My
Consortium brethren indicate that some of them have crossed friendly swords with you
elsewhere. -- Midas

Tevik Zokharj -- Give us something? Don't need it, pal. Made a killing in MD's
stock. Why, me and Ronald McDonald are like best buds. If you are passing out the
welfare food stamps, I hear the Yamabushi need anything they can get. -- Golden

Kore Surya -- Don't I know you from somewhere? I'm glad you were around. (wink) --
Pot Of Gold

Purz! Really? Purrrrrrrsssssssss? Well, I guess I was the kitty cat and you were
the bear. Well done. -- Golden Bear

Potential -- So much for my stake, you cad! -- Klondike Gold

Pot of Gold -- It is pretty to see what money will do. -- Kore Surya

Leverage -- Do your duty bravely. Fear Kjarran. Honor the Satrap.

Shroud in 'with the terrorists' -- Hahaha!! Bring it on, bozo breath. Come on after
me and give it your best shot, you insolent novice! -- Yamabushi

Shrouded Mystery face -- Pay attention, moron. Got no feud with Jorja, and never had
one. Am simply disgusted with her completely unfounded support for that that
absolute idiot, Midas. -- Yamabushi

Persiflage -- Hate to have disappointed you about Kurome, little one. But your
manager is just like that dumbed-down Midas jerk; the Yamabushi are way ahead of your
miniscule mentality.

Kurome probably wasn't really worth the effort from the start; ST=9(+2) CN=13(+1)
SZ=9 WT=17 WL=18(+1) SP=11 DF=11, Master INIT, AdvExp ATK, AdvExp DEF.  Was a little
surprised he got as much as that 13-15-4 record, even with the -2 curse in ATK.
Probably due to the amount of skills he started with, but his damage-doing capability
was just woefully inadequate, which contributed to his losses.

Midas -- Am now convinced you are in critical need of psychiatric help. You are a
slobbering moron, completely disconnected from any sort of reality (no pun intended).
Are you even capable of any coherent though pattern?? Seek professional assistance
at your earliest opportunity. -- Yamabushi

Kurohana -- Such is the life of a gladiator, I guess. A totally rotten match for
you, but it happens. -- Punh Jently

M. Chardinee -- You shouldn't be here! You should be out in the strait killing
monsters! Go away! -- Ketl Physhe

Taikutsu -- Not my favorite style match, but that's the way the dice fall. Drat. --
O Puncha

Golden Opportunity -- No, no, you've got it all wrong! It isn't DM2, it's D2. Dee
Two. Just that, no more. -- Jorja
P.S. Even worse, eh?

Midas -- No...more like the cumin in chili-con-carne. -- Jorja

Noachian -- While your sentiments warm the cockles of my cockles, and while I would
admit that there are days when it's really satisfying to hear an opponent's teeth
rattle across the floor, Yamabushi is merely grousing, as we all have done from time
to time, about the way the game works. If you want to have at him, do it for your
own reasons. -- Jorja
P.S. I suspect that the core of his objection to Golden Gladiators is that they've
been scooping most of the free fights since they returned.
