DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Katarina sharpened her blade while she reminisced about her brief fight with
Sardo Grackel. It was not so long ago that the more experienced basher had easily
battered her about. She smiled at the turnaround in fortune; Grackel's one attack
failed, and his defenses lay open before her. Some quick strokes inside his exposed
guard, and he was beaten soundly. "Perhaps I deserve this title after all," she
wondered.
Hasan walked into the barracks and sat near her, clutching his bandaged
midsection. The lithe Fratsfan winced as he turned to speak. "Golden Delicious
cannot be beaten. In two battles I could not lay my blade upon her. Her skill is
mighty," he said with shame. "I thought her my equal, but in truth I was but her
student. Her whirling blade dances like none I have seen. I was fortunate to escape
permanent injury."
Katarina considered her friend and knew the truth of his words. She too had
felt frustration in fighting the Golden Gladiator. The armor. The skill. The
frustration. Golden Delicious was the total warrior and had defeated Katarina months
before. But there was a way to victory; there always was. The Harkeny absently
pushed a blonde lock of hair behind her ear and replied, coldness in her voice. "I
have earned the title of Duelmaster. Am I without skill and determination?"
"Of course not. I only ..."
"I know what you meant, Hasan. And it was brave of you to challenge her to
protect my title... but it was unnecessary. She is the most recognized warrior in
Willaf, and though I am Duelmaster, many--including you, it seems--consider her the
best."
He started to protest but she waved off his words. "Know this. I will
challenge Golden Delicious on the morn. I ask you and Siegfried to seek other
opponents, for she is mine, and mine alone.
"Doubt me not, my friend, for this I vow: I will seek the joints in her armor.
I will move like water through her strikes. When the crowd is surest of her victory
and when all hope of glory is gone, my blade will find her, and she will fall."
SPY REPORT
Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out WILLAF to see
what's new. Too bad, GOLDEN GLADIATORS, but FAR TRAVELERS was just too good to be
stopped. Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, PUNNY AMINALS! 'Cause they got
4-1-0 and moved up to 4th! MVP award for SAD SLACKS? EMOTIONAL PANTS' proud of it
after beating CAPTURED ORC and getting 11 points. Talk about yer big time losers!
SIMON ST. JOHN got smashed by CRANKY CORDUROY, and lost 7 points! Oh, wow, like the
Duelmaster must be the most popular gal in all WILLAF. She got the most challenges.
(But what about proposals?) Like, GOLDEN DELICIOUS must be pretty gutsy! She
challenged the Duelmaster from FAR TRAVELERS. Does this gal have a death wish or
what! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think KATARINA should let
GOLDEN DELICIOUS be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. I hear the
top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic
fighters for PR photos.
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? MAXIMUM RESULTS was the most avoided team. Is a
299-362-22 record really that scary? Is there some deep dark secret why GOLDEN
GLADIATORS' been avoiding MAXIMUM RESULTS so much? Or is it just that they're too
scared? HASAN AL-AZRAD must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. He
challenged STOGA STEEL. 8 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I
thought HASAN AL-AZRAD showed great skill and promise when he defeated STOGA STEEL.
All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All WILLAF ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. SILLY SUIT really fought hard against ANGUS MACDOUGAL. That'll
teach FAR TRAVELERS not to go and kill any of EMOTIONAL PANTS' guys again, huh! Hey
you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or
have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
