The wind came roaring in off the Storm Sea. Willaf was sevefal miles from the
coast, but in weather like this, it didn't matter. John Dere huddled deeper into his
green-and-gold cloak and hoped his ears wouldn't freeze and fall off.
He leaned closer to his teammate, Sardo Grackel. "Tell me again why we're out
here?" He had to shout to be heard over the storm.
Grackel didn't turn, but purple iridescence shimmered across his polished
leathers as he shifted position to follow... something with his eyes. "I just want
to see what he's up to!"
     "Who?"
"The Assassin. Mirzul of Illis. He's had chances to get clean away from
Willaf, and he hasn't taken them. I want to know WHY."
"Sounds more like the kind of question Horus would ask. Why do you care?"
Grackel was silent for a long moment. "There might be money in knowing," he
said.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

"It is strange, the way our battles play out, is it not? Golden Delicious and I
again fought, this time, arranged by the Commission. Our first battle was nine
minutes, the last two, and our most recent five. Unpredictable but exhilarating.
Skilled competition brings out the best in us, does it not?
"This cycle I find myself alone, 'protected' in the rankings by Siegfried, the
lone Challenger Champion. I suspect the Commision will arrange a foe for me, but
such a match cannot compare to the battles with the Golden Gladiator.
"Who knows what the future holds, for life is uncertain. Defeat, disgrace,
death... all await us in every match.
"But these dark thoughts will not lead to victory. I shut them away in the
recesses of my mind and now go to train with Hasan. Siegfried is too distracted to
be of any use to me as a sparring partner. I wonder why...?"

your Duelmaster, Katarina

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, WILLAF? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed
to see PAN FOR GOLD win a fight and gain 19 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, SAD SLACKS
beat SIMON ST. JOHN and SIMON ST. JOHN lost 14 points. You're breakin' my heart.
And if variety is the spice of life, WILLAF may be getting bland, as KATARINA stays
top dog in the city. The Dripping Blade, humph! I've tasted better ale at
mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From WILLAF's trash dumps?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. EMOTIONAL PANTS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you
were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And
it looks like GOLDEN GLADIATORS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of
would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. SIEGFRIED was challenged more times this turn
than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. SARDO GRACKEL
was challenged by one of FAR TRAVELERS' warriors this turn, with SIEGFRIED having a
lead of 18 points going into the fight. This is the sort of thing that makes the
price of admission to WILLAF's games worth it! SIEGFRIED was overcame by SARDO
GRACKEL!! I notice HASAN AL-AZRAD challenging down 21 points to fight CRANKY
CORDUROY, FAR TRAVELERS doubtless has some rotten excuse for such an insult to honor.
HASAN AL-AZRAD was bested by CRANKY CORDUROY! Ok, HASAN AL-AZRAD want to fight my
grandmother next turn? Huh?
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Nipped in the bud, you might say, was SALLY C.
SHELLEY of PUNNY AMINALS this turn. Course, I wouldn't say that, so much as have a
belly laugh. Heh heh. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate
catches up with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up
here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! Paste this one in your scrapbooks, you'll need
the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Katarina -- Well, there you did it, knocking me out of the top ranks, just because
you are my better. I salute your talent, and I must admit that you look rather
delicious. -- Golden Delicious

Far Travelers, Obregon, and the lovely Katarina -- The Golden Gladiators congratulate
a fine, fine Duelmaster. -- Midas

Balomir -- I enjoyed the battle. Good luck to you with someone else. -- Gold Locket

Morgar -- You surely showed me who is boss. I must call the maintenance crew for
repairs. -- Golden Gate Bridge

John Dere -- Never a good day to mow, but always a great day to pan. -- Pan For Gold

Happy New Year All. -- Midas and The Golden Gladiators

Sherlock -- "Bullied?" For an intrepid sleuth, you show an alarming lack of
backbone. Your warriors can hardly be motivated to win in the arena if their manager
thinks they can be "bullied." But since you feel the victim here, I ask you to
review your newsletters and find ONE fight in which the Far Travelers downchallenged
a warrior with lower apparent fight experience (My warriors have no more than 5 FE
each from tourneys). I then ask you to survey the Adepts and Champions rankings and
notice that your warriors and mine, in the aggregate, make up the majority of that
population. Am I to ask my bravoes to avoid challenging your more experienced
warriors (even though there are few targets I can honorably challenge) to avoid
hurting your feelings? Stay deadly, my friend. -- Obregon

Pan for Gold -- I found some gold in a pan once. It was a skillet, though, and the
gold was a cheese omelet. Very good. WORTH gold, beyond all dispute. There was
sausage beside it. -- John Dere

Mirzul of Illis, Assassin by Trade, Convicted in Willaf -- So what's the deal, is
this a sign that the trade of assassin doesn't pay well enough, or just that you
aren't good enough at it to stay under the radar (whatever "radar" is). The question
should not be taken as an insult--you're too far from home to see insults behind
every rock, at least, if you want to survive--but as a genuine querry regarding
alternative employment prospects. I'm not going to quit the arena, mind, but I could
surely use some extra cash. Things are tight. -- Sardo Grackel

Finn the Red-handed, Dangerous Criminal -- No lie in that! You're a menace. And
RUDE! There was no call to laugh at me. Why don't you go mug a little old lady?
I've got problems of my own here. -- Billy Jack

Bad GM -- This is memorable, worthy of commemorating with a gladiator? Bad
moderators are in the vast majority, or so *I* have found it. It's the lack of
education, of course. No one studies any more, and then they wonder why their
imaginative creations are threadbare! Fools. -- Horus Mann

Longing Leggings -- Hmm. I have a longing FOR leggings, in this weather, who
wouldn't? But I never supposed that the leggings themselves had longings. What do
you long for? -- Sally C. Shelley

Huh. The "Teams on the Move" goes down into the negative movements before it cuts
off, and we aren't there. Not a cheery message in that. -- Jorja, Punny Animals
P.S. Maybe the clerks in the Commission office don't like puns?

     That hardly seems possible.

Pan for Gold -- You are confusing me with my brother, Horus Greeley. Although even
he did not originate the advice to "Go west, young man, and grow with the country."
I forget who he plaigar-- ah, was inspired by, but I know he didn't come up with it.
Well, face it, he is a bit of a nut, who else would think he could travel clear
across a continent in a white suit and arrive looking halfway respectable? -- Horus
Mann
P.S. But he may end up on this team, now that Jorja has been reminded of his
existence.

Gold Locket -- I'll keep it in my pocket, then. -- Sally C. Shelley

Golden Gate Bridge -- No, I have a bridge. I know it in partnership with my
brothers--the Gruffs, you know. We charge tolls and do well enough from it. -- Billy
Jack
P.S. I'm in training here to help deal with those people who are so crass as to
refuse to pay.
