                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

I am a very, very lucky Duelmaster. I have had three straight fights with Stoga
Steel for The Title. (The last his challenge.) And although we are evenly matched
and Midas put the odds of me winning at 50/50, I have managed to salvage all three.
I suspect my run of luck is about to suffer, however. And I still need two wins in
three more fights to get the honor of Lord Protector. (Or will my 9-3 Apprentice
Mailer TV and FE in my one and only tournament experience impact an early graduation?
I doubt it.) I surely hope Stoga Steel holds off on killing me on the way! Wish me
luck?
We took a poll amongst us Golden Gladiators and we came up with our top seven
favorite warrior names in Willaf. In alphabetical order:
Antivenom
Dee Nile
Lonely Handmedowns
Misdiagnosis
Ripley Byrd
Sad Slacks
Tricilliad
That's it for now, but I hope it is not all, folks.

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of WILLAF! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. ANTIVENOM caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as it skillfully bested GOLDPLATED and was awarded 20 points
in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, ANTIVENOM put down
GOLDPLATED, causing it to lose 12 points of recognition in the process. This time
victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail STOGA STEEL, Duelmaster of
WILLAF! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights
without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city WILLAF. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's
challenge seeking began. MAXIMUM RESULTS is feared. This much I can say. Methinks
more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last
week avoiding MAXIMUM RESULTS. Indeed it was GOLDEN GLADIATORS. Mighty fighters
cannot but expect competition from those below. SAD SLACKS take warning! You have
more than a few enemies in WILLAF.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena
there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in WILLAF. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a
maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Stoga Steel -- I give you credit for that challenge. Our fights are so so close.
You are not one to whom a bridge can be sold. -- Golden Gate Bridge, DMIII

Billy Jack -- Thar's gold in them thar hills! -- Pan For Gold

Horus Mann -- I believe you are just too powerful, too experienced, and too skilled
for me. Gold may just not cut it with you. Kudos on the fight. -- Goldplated

I do not know what happened to the Golden Gladiator personals and DM Column last
turn. I suspect that The Bash Bros. Doctor misdiagnosed where they were supposed to
go. -- Midas, Golden Gladiators

Coyote -- We have reevaluated the "carryover damage scenario" as you asked. We have
many fights to access for a review. The result: nope; we are not at all mistaken.
There is no such aminal! -- Midas

Golden Gate Bride -- I just have to salute one of my own. Congrats, again, on the
title. -- Midas

Khisanth -- It is perfectly okay if you have more than two warriors in this arena.
We really would like more serpents to beat up on and skin for belts and boots. Not
golden, but pretty nice, all the same. (wink) -- Midas

I dunno, how about a Golden Asp?

Get ready for The Milwaukee Face this July. Whom all Willafians will we see there?
-- Midas

Gee, Horus, but I like you both an awfully lot! Maybe BOTH you and Billy Jack can
take me to the dance? -- Gold Charm

Coyote -- I knew a player once who swore up and down that the addition of gender and
race to the printouts caused more knockdowns. I have known players who insisted that
it is easier to train stats if you win the fight, which is not true, it's a simple
random-number roll. I know another manager who insisted that his advanced gladiators
always peformed more poorly on the turn after a death-and-resurrection. I know that
originally, there was the IDEA that gladiators should accumulate permanent wounds and
eventually become un-viable, but that this was never implemented, as it promised too
rapid a turnover and annoyed the play-testers. I have been credibly informed by
programmers who should know that lost hit points are FULLY RESTORED when a gladiator
survives a fight. I admit there are some gladiators around, in Basic and even more
in Advanced, that I would LIKE to see turned into vegetables by accumulated permanent
injures, but... not going to happen.
And besides, even if there is permanent damage, you can't do anything about it,
so the issue is irrelevant to play. -- Jorja
P.S. Maybe that would make a new tourney prize: potion of permanent damage! Weapon
of permanent damage: get hit with this and you don't recover?

Misdiagnosis -- Drat, I was SURE it was the carburetor. -- John Dere

Galen -- I just get the feeling that you should be out in the field studying herbs,
you know? It seems like gladiating isn't YOU. -- Ripley Byrd

Pan for Gold -- You again. -- Billy Jack

Goldplated -- When you put gold over base metal, it peels. Better to pay extra for
the solid. Or at least an alloy. -- Horus Mann

Antivenom -- Are you implying that *I* am poisonous? -- Dee Nile
