Black Serimnas refers to the idols of the nature goddess that once stood at major intersections, which had acquired a dark patina from years of exposure to smoke and soot from the forges of the metal foundries prevalent in the district. During the years of Karnhorn occupation the idols have been removed to less conspicuous sites but the name persists. It is perhaps inevitable that Veastian's revolt against Karnhorn rule would begin in that sector. Those who live their lives in daily desperation and own virtually nothing have little to lose. The Karnhorn Navy kept strong garrisons in the Central and Western parts of the city (the governmental offices and port respectively) but were stretched thin throughout the residential districts. When a couple of street gangs formed an alliance and massed their memberships in hope of adventure and loot they were joined by a throng of like minded citizens. The small Karnhorn garrison was forced to take shelter from hurled rocks and bottles behind a barricade. Seeing the garrison powerless before them, the crowd became increasingly emboldened by its strength. Unwilling to charge the barricade they tried to taunt the Karnhorns into a precipitous attack. To entice the garrison out of its barricade, members of the crowed began looting and setting fire to Karnhorn owned businesses. The sailors could only stand and watch. Then the crowed heaped the ultimate indignity on the Karnhorns. They broke into the local Temple of Kjarran, dragged an idol of the Karnhorn god out into the street, covered it with oiled rags and prepared to set it ablaze before the eyes of the enraged garrison. Whether the garrison would have sortied out to certain death to avenge this insult will never be known because at that moment a company of Marines arrived from the city center. Sailors are never particularly comfortable in land combat; their training is geared to fighting at sea while keeping control of the movement of their vessel. Marines, on the other hand, are amateur sailors at best, but thoroughly trained in war tactics on both sea and land. Every ship in the Karnhorn Navy has a Marine contingent aboard, and in this case all of these contingents had been converged into a single Marine unit with the express purpose of defending Karnhorn honor and religion. The Marines formed into line behind the barricade, locked shields, pointed their longspears murderously outward and began a deliberate advance in step against the insurgents. With a cheer the sailors of the garrison formed a second line and advanced out behind the Marines. As always, trained fighters working together as a team had little difficulty putting the individuals of the mob to flight. Quickly the formerly arrogant crowd was transformed into a frightened mass. And with good reason. There is no greater insult to a Karnhorn that the burning of an idol of his god by unbelievers. For that offense the Marines and sailors gave no quarter. Those wounded by the Marines in the front rank were put to the sword by the sailors coming up behind. Many were caught and died where they stood simply because there was no room to run. Many others were tramped in the ensuing panic and could only wait helplessly until the merciless spear of a Marine or sword of a sailor put an end to their life. By the time the other healers and I arrived on the scene there was little we could do. We treated the few marines who had taken injuries, but as for the insurgents--those who could not flee died. The Karnhorns advanced as far as the main square of Black Serimnas where under orders from their officers they halted and took up defensive positions. I estimated that about a hundred citizens had been killed, though I suppose the exact number will never be known. The images of the dead haunted me as I returned to the Jaydeite Temple. As far as I was concerned, the rebellion had been crushed. Admiral Arkossa had been triumphant. Veastian would now settle down uncomfortably to occupation and be forcibly transformed in the image of the Empire. What choice did they have? It was obvious that Arkossa's Marines were too potent a force to be defeated by a now dispirited populace. I shook my head sadly. Perhaps this result had been inevitable, but I couldn't help feeling pity for those who would have to live out their lives with a foreign yoke around their necks. I was shaken out of my thoughts when two familiar hands grasped my shoulders from behind. "Come with me, Boz. Kyreses needs your help," said Thystle urgently. "I was there at the battle, if you can call it that," I answered. "Arkossa has won. If Kyreses needs help escaping from the city, perhaps I can help. There's been too much bloodshed already." Thystle smiled grimly. "It's a good thing you're a priest and not a general. You think the war is over after the first skirmish. It's not. No one is beaten yet." "Perhaps I should be a general then. I'd give up now--stop the killing and negotiate a peace." "There's no peace without justice, Boz. You should understand that. Arkossa's rule would destroy this city by burying everything good that the Shews and Harkenes have to offer and replace it with a smoldering hatred. The insurgents would destroy this city by burying every improvement the Karnhorns have made. Veastian is not a Karnhorn city, but it's not Shewish or Harkene anymore either. Only Kyreses has the strength and vision to bring all those elements together. Your friends Father Vartan and A'Krill have realized that, and now I've come to realize it too. I came here to ask you to join us." "But Kyreses' operation is smuggling black kughas into the Empire," I exclaimed, recalling my conversation with Arkossa. "It seems to me that we are merely replacing one evil with another." Thystle didn't answer the question directly but looked deep into my eyes. "I'm not offering you perfection--just the best option available. Look, things are about to move quickly and I want you on my side when they do. If you'd rather stay neutral or get out of town I'll understand, but if you're going to help Kyreses we need you right now. No more time to ponder. Are you with us?" My manager, Jack Wolfspider, always said that I might have had a brilliant career in the advanced arenas if it weren't for my lack of decisiveness. Minus four he used to call it. I wanted more information. I needed time to ponder the options. How was I supposed to make a decision based on so little evidence? "Let's go," I heard myself saying. "I'll do what I can to help restore Kyreses." Thystle leaned forward and gave me a kiss. "That's what I love about you, Boz. You have conviction. Quick, follow me." I followed Thystle to the basement where she located the secret exit I had been unable to find earlier. I followed her out through the streets at a jog. "That's what I love about you, Boz?" she had said. Did that mean...? >)]H[(< + -----:----- + >)] The Free Cities #60 [(< + -----:----- + >)]H[(< Korga and vicinity: Aghtamar pushed back her bowl with a sigh of satisfaction. She'd probably eaten better venison stew, but she couldn't remember when. "So tell us about the new danger on the road here," she invited. Cadal drained his tankard of ale and folded his arms on the table. "We don't know what it is," he said, "but there have been more than a dozen travelers' deaths between here and Mirkon [the next town east of Korga] that can't be accounted for by any of the usual hazards. All but one instance were lone travelers, all were moving after dark. A courier, a couple of traders, the rest we're not sure about. Two female, the rest male. Karnhorns, mostly, but three Harkenes, a couple westerners, Convincian, maybe. All armed, four mounted and the others on foot." "A mixed lot," Fist of Kjarran said, nodding. "Nothing to link them together--" "Except the way they died. The doctor here that examined some of the bodies called it 'heart failure'." Cadal grimaced. "Those of us that have been patrolling the road and found the bodies call it 'dead of fear'. The looks on their faces...." He shook his head slightly. "Whatever they met terrified them. All but the oldest two had run long and hard before they dropped. We figure the oldest ones simply died on the spot where they met...whatever it was." "Not a lot to go on, if you're thinking we can help you hunt this killer," Zilla said critically. "I suppose there aren't any tracks?" "Nothing we can be sure of," Cadal admitted. "My idea is to bait them--send a likely traveler along the road after dark and follow, hoping to come on something." "Damned big risk you're asking your decoy to take," Aghtamar pointed out. "Yes, that's why I only want Lord Protectors on this." "I can do this," Fist of Kjarran said briskly. "For the glory of the Empire and in the service of Kjarran and His Daughter Jayde, I will serve as bait to lure out this killer who preys on innocent travelers!" Zukal and vicinity: It was harder to get Veleks into the boat than Ghenis had expected. Dead, it might have been awkward, but alive...the little thief turned suddenly hysterical, shrieking and weeping, trashing wildly, and begging not to be given to "the burning eyes and flashing teeth." Ghenis finally had to knock Veleks out so that he and Harlund drag him into the rowboat. "He's nuts," Harlund growled, leaning into his oars as he drove the boat back toward the shore. "Burning eyes and flashing teeth. Sounds like some kind of kid's nightmare. He do some kind of drugs?" "Veleks? No. He's got a few bad habits, but not drugs. He must have seen something real...but maybe not really what he thinks he saw." "He couldn't've seen something like that, not on the beach he couldn't. There aren't any monsters in the woods around here." Harlund paused and looked around uneasily, looked down into the water, which was filling with the shadows of sunset faster than the sky was. "Might be different if he'd been in a boat to start with," the beach walker muttered. "He might've seen something over the water...." "Veleks can't swim and had no boat. He was not on the water," Ghenis said firmly. "Besides, I found what are probably his tracks. He was on the shore road and left it to run toward the beach, and I do mean run--flat out. Something terrified him. Veleks is no hero, but he wouldn't run without a reason." Harlund opened his mouth to argue further, then looked at Ghenis and shut it again. Smart move. "Just get us to shore, man. Then I'll pay you, and you can go home. It isn't your problem." Malcorn: Blackie, Lord Malcorn of Malcorn, sat in his study and stared into the fire. He was alone, and it was very late. A bottle of wine and a goblet sat on the table at his elbow, but he didn't reach for them. Getting drunk might make him forget his problems for the night, but in the morning, the problems would still be there, and he'd have Shew-sized hangover to go with them. Better to pass on the wine. Had he done the right thing in releasing the Dregur from the Silent Place? Yes. Or at least, releasing them wasn't a wrong thing. Caging them because the Karnhorns didn't know how to live with them and hadn't the power to kill them had been a wrong thing. Blackie believed with his whole heart that death was better than a cage. And he had known the risks he was taking--the risks he was subjecting everyone in the area to--when he released the Dregur. Some innocent people would die of encounters with the Dregur...as innocent people were dying every day at the hands of the invaders. Blackie's eyes went to the wine bottle. That was what haunted him, the innocent people. Hell, even some of the invaders were innocent in all the ways that counted, drafted from their Eastern homes at the command of some powerful lord and sent to Alastari to fight and die. Telling himself that fewer innocents would die this way was cold comfort. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 465): TREMERE of DARK TOADS (TigToad, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Well, it looks like my long reign over you pathetic losers is over. What's it been, 6 turns? C'mon, people, there's these things called skills, you all should learn some. Anyway, on to business. Kikui, you wanted a shot at the throne, I'll do you one better and give it to you; assuming my challenge made it to the Commission in time and you can take my open hand no offense strategy. Let's see what you do at the top. You want to be the hero, but remember, heroes get beat up. A lot. I see we got a few new teams here, it won't be long before you realize you don't have the stones to hack it here. But we welcome you anyway, whatever the duration of your stay. I bid you farewell Aljafr, my glory days here are over; I'm off to serve eternally as a slave in Greywand's army. SPY REPORT Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly ALJAFIR games. There were bitter words at DELTA DOOM's guildhouse after a 2-3-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 14th. Dark Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week RAGNAROK went 3-2-1 to move up 4 in the rankings. The city turned out in welcome to meet the banners of a new guild, WHEN EAGLES DARE, as they entered the city this week. May victory find you! EAGLES LAIR caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested CHERRY PITTER and was awarded 31 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, EAGLES LAIR put down CHERRY PITTER, causing her to lose 9 points of recognition in the process. Who here was not present for the title fight this week as ASH boldly challenged LAWN DART GOALIE in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? Although ASH made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious LAWN DART GOALIE. Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7! Many and various are the arts of battle. In ALJAFIR "art" is a word that has long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in ALJAFIR these days is KANTO FORCE. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding KANTO FORCE. Indeed it was HEROESANDFOUNDONES. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after INBRED FRED. Watch your back! Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more than its fair share of red in recent times. DA has sworn to take up religion upon living to tell of his recent bout with the Dark Arena horrors. A rare thing indeed! Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Don't let that nimrod Elephant fool you. Elephant is no more a member of The Midnight Foundation then Klep is a member of the Dark Circle. You've known the Midnight Foundation long enough to know that (A) the Foundation proudly proclaims our teams and (B) we are the most hated and feared alliance in all of Alastari but we do it with style and class. Ellie May is just your average, no- class, know nothing, newbie asshole. Heck, he's not even orginal. Some other nimrod proclaimed himself "CEO of The Midnight Foundation" over in Arena 19 before Ellie May was. We figured considering how low these guys were below the respect radar, no one respectable and with half a brain would pay attention to them. But seeing as how you're the first manager with half a brain to acknowledge them, I thought I'd say something. The members of the Midnight Foundaton are: Carnage, Bird, Jekyll, Cajun, Big Bear, and myself, Odin. That's it and no more. Its a shame these newbies don't respect some of the unwritten rules of the Personal Ads. Like proclaiming that they are members of Alliances that they are not members of. Next thing you know, they'll start writing stuff and putting someone else's name to it, maybe even yours. At that point, no one will know who wrote what and who to respond to. Then the personals will be filled with "Pip -- Why did you call me a jerk? -- Jorga" "Jorga -- Hey, I didn't say that. Somebody else wrote that and signed my name to it. -- The REAL Pip" The personal ads will become pointless and half the fun of the game will be gone. -- Odin, mgr. of Ragnarok, Overlord of the Midnight Foundation Odin -- Alliances can be hard to keep track of, but if anybody signed a personal "Jorga," Our Esteemed Ed. would catch it. She doesn't spell it that way. No, seriously, if people start signing the wrong manager names to their personals, some may slip by, but sooner or later--and probably sooner--they will be caught. Ed. is on the ball, and this is not the sort of thing the Commission is likely to ignore. -- Temp Ed. Managers of Aljafir -- It is a Commission policy that the newsletters of a given arena are for the players active in that arena. Sometimes we print personals from players who are not in the arena in question, and sometimes we don't. In my judgment, the personals which were submitted to this newsletter by an absentee manager added nothing to the quality of the newsletter. So I pulled them. I will be gone and it will be Our Esteemed Ed. next time, if anyone wants to try them again. -- Temp Ed. Elephant -- Team name please. Chicken spit tool, get a team in here so I can kick your grass. -- Pip Odin -- What's going on here? Musical blunderlords? You guys need to organize a little better there, chump. And you know playing here while bird's not active to protect you is bad for your w/l%. -- Pip P.S. If your warriors stopped dropping their blades onto their feet, you wouldn't have to clean up after those mighty rivers of blood. Caligula -- That was not enjoyable. Aren't we supposed to be having FUN here? (And if not, why NOT, eh?) -- Karo Lee Two Glass Eyes -- You're some kind of freak, yes? I don't DO freaks, buster. -- Mouse Noyle And yonder goes the Mouse's winning record. I guess he doesn't do winning records either. -- Jorja Yanase -- Wow, were there a lot of skills around, or what? Good work for both of us, huh? -- Torlyn Una The Anvil -- Guess I wasn't The Hammer. Oh, well. -- Roland Sall Mielle Rantor -- What the heck was the low down idea of deflecting my blows? I worked HARD to get those blows JUST RIGHT. -- Bella Chee Trainer -- Do whatever you must. We of the Middle Way don't seek kills, nor do we avoid bloodfeuds. As to the personals, we call them as we see them. -- Bella Chee 30 April 2003 All -- Remember to put your arena number on your strategy sheets. Strategies turned in without an arena number run the risk of missing the turn. -- NAIEI 10 May 2003 To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city of Aradi.
