   <)]H[(> + -----:----- + <)] Revolt in Veastian #12 [(> + -----:----- + <)]H[(>
                                   By Reverend Boz

Thystle led me across an alley where Ed and Threngir were waiting. The Harkene
and extra-large Shew nodded a greeting. There seemed to be no particular resentment
that A'Krill and I had nearly killed them in a duel a week earlier. Their wounds had
healed remarkably well and neither seemed hampered by his injuries.
"I think it's time you told me who you really are, Thystle," I said.
She cracked a mysterious smile. "Not buying the story about me being a farm
girl from the Shewish Forest, huh?" she answered my question with a question.
"You're not Harkene, you're Karnhorn," I stated. "I've known that since our
meeting with Emir Kyreses. You knew all the proper forms of greeting. I didn't know
half of them myself, but then I'm a commoner. Only a highborn Karnhorn could have
pulled that off. You've dyed your hair and had a few minor alterations done to your
face to make you look Harkene. Why?"
Thystle ran a hand across her short blond hair. "I had to shear off my long
black tresses to pass without suspicion in this city. The sacrifices I have to make
for the Empire! I am Lady Ryu of Karnhorn Intelligence. Perhaps your friend Jack
Wolfspider has mentioned me to you."
I searched my memory of conversations with Jack but could not recall her name
being spoken. "I don't think he has mentioned you," I answered. "What was your
connection with him?
"Jack isn't one to talk about his past. He and I were lovers once, engaged to
be married. I had to use him and his team as cover for a spying mission in Lapur. I
couldn't tell him about my job. Eventually it all came out. He couldn't forgive
what he thought was betrayal. He stormed out of my life in one of those fits of
self-righteous fury he's so famous for. He still loves me though. I'm certain of
that."
My heart sank to the ground. I had become very fond of Thystle and thought she
has some feeling for me. But if she was in love with my friend Jack then there was
no possibility of a romance between us. I tried to say something but words wouldn't
come.
Lady Ryu noticed my discomfiture and gave me a warm hug. "I'm sorry, Boz. In
my business I can't afford to love anyone--not you, not Jack, no one. Like my hair,
it's another sacrifice I have had to made to serve the Empire. I do like you very
much but that is something that's going to have to wait. Right now the Empire needs
our help and we've got to give that our full attention. Okay?"
"Sure," I needed shaking off the disappointment as best I could. "Tell me what
you need."
Ryu nodded and her manner became businesslike. "The Satrap is well aware of the
situation here in Veastian. But the war against the Eastern Invaders must take
priority. Only when they have been crushed and the sieges of our cities lifted will
we be able to turn our attention to the western part of our Empire. Then that
traitorous Emir in Kurukar will pay for his rebellion and the situation here in
Veastian will be stabilized. In fact, the Satrap has been besieged by letters, pleas
and petitions from the competing factions in this city--all of them claiming to be
working in the best interests of the Empire. As if they serve the Empire by ripping
the city to pieces! Anyway, the Satrap sent me along with one of our most powerful
wizards to assess the situation and solve it if we could."
"Are you talking about the wizard who hired you and these other gentlemen to rid
the city of Dwarves? What was that all about?" I asked recalling the incident. "And
wasn't the wizard killed in the Inn explosion?"
"Unfortunately yes," she replied. "You see he was using high level magic, a
spell of Location. Emir Kyreses had been imprisoned by Admiral Arkossa. We wanted
to find out where Kyreses was being held. Unfortunately, Dwarves radiate a strong
anti-magic field. The Location spell is very sensitive to anti-magic. Wherever
there was a Dwarf the spell was blocked out for a half mile radius. There aren't
very many Dwarves in Veastian, but still much of the city was blacked out from the
spell because of them. We couldn't locate Kyreses. In desperation the wizard hired
Ed and Threngir here to clear the Dwarves out of town. I posed as a hired thug and
accompanied them. We were just looking to scare them out; we really didn't want to
harm them if possible. Just our luck the first Dwarf we ran into was the Lord
Protector A'Krill and you were there to take his side. You were too much for Ed and
Threngir and I decided the two of you were more valuable alive so I didn't kill you."
"Kill us?!" I chortled thinking she had made a joke. "I realize you weren't
fighting to your full ability, but you wouldn't have stood a chance against A'Krill
and me."
There was a blur and the next thing I knew Ryu's epee rested uncomfortably
against my throat. Another blur and the slender sword had returned to it scabbard.
I stood dumbfounded. Never in my years in the arena had I witnessed speed and
precision anything like what had just happened.
"Think again," said Ryu. "The trouble with you gladiators who come up through
Greywand's system is that you never even consider that there might be other training
systems available more powerful than the one you know. I have been taught in a very
different school of fighting."
"No amount of training can make a fighter as fast as that. Your blade has to
have some powerful magic worked into it to make it react like that."
"Maybe," replied Ryu with a mysterious smirk. "But magic or not, you'd have
been just as dead if I'd decided to kill you. You were my conduit into the Jaydeite
Temple. I had gathered from my sources that the Jaydeites were planning a rescue of
Kyreses. I wanted to plant myself in the temple and find out why. So I surrendered
meekly and demurely and turned on the charm. Not only did that get medical attention
for Ed and Threngir, but I got myself a job as Temple housekeeper as well. From
there I could snoop to my heart's content."
"What about the wizard? The explosion that destroyed the inn and killed all
those people?"
"Since we hadn't cleared the Dwarves out of town I can only guess that he tried
raising the magical power he put into his spell to an unwisely high level to try to
counteract their presence and it backfired. The explosion came as a shock to me.
Such a waste!"
I sighed. The plot was taking too many twists and turns for me to keep up with
it. "All right. Now what about the Jaydeite Temple assisting in Kyreses' escape. I
was part of the Temple hierarchy and knew absolutely nothing about it."
"No, it seems to have been the idea of Father Vartan. He recruited his friend
A'Krill to help him and they succeeded. As to how and why, you'll have to ask him."
I rubbed my hand wearily over my face. I was getting answers to my questions at
a fast and furious pace and the answers only led to more questions. Only one more
question came to mind and I asked it. "Why does the Satrap continue to support
Kyreses over Arkossa? Kyreses was caught smuggling black kughas. Under law, Arkossa
was required to depose him for that crime and take command of the city. It seem to
me that he had no choice."
Ryu smiled sadly and cooed, "Poor Reverend Boz. So gullible. So innocent of
the way the Empire really works. Do you think the Satrap was unaware that Kyreses
was smuggling black kughas? The smugglers here in Veastian only pose as a criminal
enterprise for appearances sake. In reality it is a business wholly controlled by
the Empire. How do you think we financed the war all these years? Through the sale
of swamprice? The Empire sells black kughas. The Empire also condemns its sale.
Why? Because that drives both the demand and price far beyond reason, and we control
the supply. The stupid sons and daughters of our aristocrats spend fortunes to
obtain black kughas for use in the Pleasure Palaces. That way they spend their
wealth on drugs rather than intriguing and buying political alliances that could be
harmful to the Empire. And the beauty of it is that the proceeds go right back into
the Karnhorn Treasury. Making the drug illegal is good business. But there are
always going to be people like you and Arkossa who buy anti-drug propaganda all the
way. I feel sorry for Arkossa, I really do. He was placed in a difficult situation
and has done his best with it. Unfortunately his best is not what the Empire needs
right now. Kyreses needs to be restored and Arkossa removed. I mean really removed.
Dead. And I need your help to do it."
I really didn't like the sound of what I was hearing.

Ibizond, Korga, and in between:

Aghtamar and Zilla had argued with Fist of Kjarran, but not for long. After
all, someone to play bait WAS needed, and he WAS a Lord Protector and therefore had
guaranteed resurrection.... The Murskan, Cadal, suggested that they all get a good
night's sleep here in Ibizond, look over the area where they wanted to set their trap
tomorrow by daylight, and then run the bait tomorrow night. This seemed such a
sensible suggestion that Aghtamar hesitated to accept it; there was sure to be an
unpleasant catch in it somewhere. But Zilla was for it, and even Fist, not one to
wallow in luxuries, agreed, so she shrugged and nodded.
They stayed at the inn where they'd eaten, the Red Cow, and it seemed to
Aghtamar that the night was endless. She dozed and woke and dozed and woke and it
was still dark. Maybe the sun had forgotten to rise. Maybe she was caught in some
magical time loop. Maybe she was worrying too much. Maybe she had insomnia. She
rolled over and thumped her pillow and tried to go to sleep again. Really asleep
this time. But there were so many things that could go wrong....
By the time morning came--reluctantly, with lots of clouds and a cold, damp
wind--Aghtamar was a rag. Squinting at the imperfect mirror in the small bedroom,
she amended that to a depressed, grumpy rag. Or hag. The kind of rag or hag that no
right-thinking gladiator would want as a companion on an adventure. She was going to
be as second-rate at adventuring as she had been in the arena. She was just working
up a really good depression when Zilla pounded on the door.
"Come on," Zilla urged, bouncing on her toes once the door was opened. "The
guys are waiting."
"Maybe it would be better if I didn't--"
"They're WAITING for us, Aghtamar. Come ON." Zilla grabbed her arm and dragged
her out into the inn's tiny hallway. "I kind of LIKE having a couple of men waiting
for us," she confided. "Even though Cadal is OLD, he must be forty or even FIFTY,
he's a very HOT-looking old man...."
At that, Aghtamar laughed. "I didn't know you had a thing for older men,
Zilla!"
"Well, he's a Lord Protector, so he won't get any older than he IS, after all,
and I bet he knows lots of INTERESTING things." She glanced sideways at her friend.
"I bet he knows some men he could introduce to you."
"Uh...Zilla, I'm not really looking for--"
"You should be. It's great exercise!"
     "Zilla!"
"Jack told me to watch out for you," Zilla said. "He likes you. I like you.
Lots of people like you. He was, we were all worried you might get depressed again.
You take things too seriously, Aghty."
     "'Aghty'?"
"What kind of nickname would YOU suggest I make out of Aghtamar? Why you ever
let your folks--or Jack if it was him--saddle you with such a mouthful of a name...."
Zilla squinted at her thoughtfully. "Maybe I'll call you 'Sunshine'. Would that be
better?"
By this time, they had arrived at the ground floor, where Fist of Kjarran and
Cadal were, indeed, waiting. "I've got horses for us all," Cadal said the moment
they appeared, "and lunches packed. Let's go, we're burning daylight here."
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Basically, the part of the Traders' Road that ran between Ibizond and Korga was
just like the parts between Korgan and Malcorn and between Ibizond and Murska.
Unpaved, rutted, hilly, muddy in the low spots, with trees crowding close on both
sides most of the way. Many of the steepest hills had been cut down to make the
grade easier, with the road passing through dirt-walled notches--great places for an
ambush, as Fist of Kjarran observed cheerfully.
Cadal nodded, but he looked gloomy. "Great places," he agreed, "but our killer
doesn't use 'em, mostly. Out of the dozen we think are victims of the same killer,
only two were attacked at a road cut like this." He looked up at the steep, muddy
banks with their shaggy topping of brush and sighed. "One in six isn't significant.
That would be too easy. Our killer doesn't seem to need ambuscades."
"But we do," Zilla said. "So, which ones do you favor, and how do you expect us
to get the killer to attack Fist where we're watching?"
"There is no way," Aghtamar muttered.
"Sure there is. Fist sets out in a group--say four people--from Ibizond about
sunset. As he approaches the spot we've picked as best for our purposes, the other
three turn back, leaving him to enter the target zone alone. So far, the killer has
never attacked a group as big as four, and besides, we can probably get enough out-
of-work gladiators from Murska, gods know there are plenty of them, to do the escort.
But my figuring is that he won't be attacked till he's alone. And if he gets beyond
the optimum area without an attack, he turns and comes back, and if he gets all the
way back through it without being attacked, we join him and call it a night and go
back to Ibizond."
"I wouldn't like to go back to the inn and leave a job undone," Fist of Kjarran
protested.
"But doing the job needs the cooperation of our killer, so we're not totally in
control of that," Zilla pointed out. "This sounds like a decent bet. Let's do it."

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, ALJAFIR? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, SPECIAL ED, since WHEN
EAGLES DARE took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Now keep the
taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for THE OLD TESTAMENT,
whose 0-1-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 12th. Ha! LO' DOWN turned their 3-2-0
turn into a 8th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you
get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-1-1 is nice, but don't get cocky, WHEN
EAGLES DARE, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Middle of the road,
ALL THINGS FLOYD, middle of the road; you'll get no good words from me, until you get
better, or worse. Break a leg. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see
INBRED FRED win a fight and gain 18 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, SEAR ICECAP beat
JORRAM and JORRAM lost 8 points. You're breakin' my heart. And it's out with the
old, in with the new, as COL SALOMON takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the
old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do
you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's
the big D? HEROESANDFOUNDONES was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice?
Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was MALICIOUS INTENT. Ha ha ha ha! KARO LEE was
challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or
feared? Heh, heh. Looks like time for laurels or hemlock, FOGGY DEW was challenged
by ATHENA, who was ranked 26 points below him. Not that I'm surprised or anything,
but ATHENA was dispatched by FOGGY DEW, leaving the latter lower for recognition
points.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ALJAFIR's
morgue. More variety. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... ATHENA, a glorious 6-5-0
fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad DEITIES & DEMIGODS. Seriously now, is it
really honorable for FOGGY DEW from KINDRED OF KAOS to kill ATHENA and give DEITIES &
DEMIGODS the chance to bloodfeud? Mmmm, could be. Titanium shields and bamboo
daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
There's got to be a better place in ALJAFIR to get a drink than The Vile Vizier!
Any suggestions? Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of
ALJAFIR. I feel much better now. I see the crowds are getting restless, I must
leave now-- Snide Clemens

Bella Chee -- You think I smell like "an exceptionally healthy belch", aye shrimp?
Actually, at your size, that's not a belch you smell. Let's just say it was coming out the other end. You best avoid me if you want to stay what little you are above
ground. -- Braug, Disciple of The Midnight Foundation

Mouse Noyle -- "Rodents Rule!"? Not unless they learn how to PARRY first, you
varmint! -- Sven

League Arcane -- On behalf of the lord and masters of Aljafir, The Overlords of The
Midnight Foundation, I would like to officially welcome you to Aljafir. We always
welcome new subjects. First, let's go over a few rules:
Rule #1--When in the presence of an Overlord, you shall get down on your hands and
knees and BOW YOUR WEAKLING BACK IN SUBSERVIENCE!!! When groveling for your pathetic
life, the hands shall be no more then 3 feet apart. At all times, your forehead will
be 6 inches above the ground, no more, no less. Groveling shall not exceed
acceptable auditory levels. Any waverance from these guidelines will result in you
being beaten to within an inch of your life!
Rule #2--There is to be NO Whining in the Personal Ads when your miserable warriors
are killed by blood thirsty Disciples of the Midnight Foundation who always have a
high desire to kill something. Neither may you whine like a little girl when we use
their worthless carcasses as decor for the Foundation Guild House. Aljafir is an old
school arena where not only is death acceptable, it's a way of life. Any waverance
from this rule will result in your puppy being beaten to within an inch of its life!
Rule #3--There will be NO Whining in the Personal Ads when your sorry sacks of flesh
are down challenged by higher ranked warriors, no matter the recognition point
difference. Down challenging is a way of life in a Foundation arena, deal with it.
While down challenges maybe acknowledged in the PAs, whining about them not being
fair will result in Carnage's pet demon Beelzebub ripping your buddy's arm off and
beating you to within an inch of your life with it.
Rule #4--Abandon any hopes and dreams of ever ruling this arena. This is the
birthplace of The Midnight Foundation. We have ruled this arena for over a decade,
since the days of Heljafir(1990). Even when we weren't physically here, we STILL
ruled this arena. Any waverance from this rule will result in you being beaten to
within two inches of your life! (We're a little more lenient with this rule as we
just love to crush someone's dreams. Heh.)
These are the rules of Aljafir, an arena ruled cruelly and ruthlessly by the
Overlords of The Midnight Foundation. Don't like the rules? Take it up with our
complaint department, the DARK ARENA!!! Now, go forth and practice your kneeling and
groveling so that you may properly BOW YOUR WEAKLING BACK IN SUBSERVIENCE TO YOUR NEW
MASTERS, THE OVERLORDS!!!! Bbbwwwa-hahahahah!!! -- Odin, Overlord of The Midnight
Foundation, Mgr. of Ragnarok
P.S. Teams to avoid if you want to live: The God Squad (managed by Overlord Bird),
Malicious Intent (Overlord Carnage), Jekyll's Brew(Overlord Jekyll), and Ragnarok

treating ya? -- Pip

Odin -- Eating 100 trolls before breakfast? I didn't know you were into that stuff,
but whatever floats your boat I guess. -- Pip

Judge -- What, no challenges? I got some new blood coming in this turn for you to
try your hand at. -- Pip

that. -- Inbred Fred

Una

Ghoti -- I don't know about other managers, but my teams ALWAYS look better on paper
than in the arena. It's some kind of gift. -- Jorja, The Middle Way

Talon Volksie -- Ah! I should have guessed it was you when you so thoroughly trashed
Bella. Your warriors always beat mine. Welcome to Aljafir. -- Jorja, The Middle Way
(other manager names in other arenas)

Odin -- Ah, yes. Rabbits, the chickens of the mammalian order. But they're easy to
skin. -- Jorja

Ghost of Anvil -- Your assessment of Roland is accurate. -- Jorja

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
