+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Somewhere a door slammed. A shot rang out, or at least something loud and
abrupt, since guns don't work here. A woman screamed. Etc. All the appropriate
cues that something dark and dastardly was about to begin.
Tabeta Unis flattened herself against the nearest wall and hoped that nobody
would bring a lantern near. To be seen here would be bad. Very bad. Probably
fatal. And she wasn't ready for a close encounter of the fatal kind.
The beating of her heart was loud in her own ears, but the men--she hoped they
were men and not demons--loading the wagon probably couldn't hear it over the
rampaging storm overhead. When lightning flashed she pressed back harder, trying to
burrow into the waterlogged planks. They would see her, she knew they would.
Disaster! But they were too busy arranging the barrels--something heavy, and in
tarred barrels, she had no idea what it would be--along the bed of the wagon. When
darkness clamped down again, she released her breath on a sigh. Could she slip away
before the next flash? She had known all along that spying on M. Konvalh Chardinee's
warehouse would be a bad idea, but Daron El had talked her into it. And where was
HE? She was the one risking discovery here!
Tabeta began to edge along the wall, praying that there would be no more
lightning for ten minutes, fifteen if possible. That would give her time to reach
the corner and slide around it. Two steps and she collided with another body. She
would have screamed but for the hand that covered her mouth.
"Quiet, damn you," somebody hissed.
She nodded slightly. The hand eased away. She would have liked to ask
questions, ask who he was and what he was doing there, but somehow that didn't seem
like a good idea.
"Seen the Noyle anywhere here tonight?"
That was the last question she had expected. What would Mouse Noyle be doing
here? She shook her head.
"Damn. We guessed he was coming here...guess we were wrong this time."
Another blaze of lightning, the blast of thunder simultaneous as it cracked
overhead. Dark, light, dark. Just time enough to see something humped and inhuman
rising from the center of the wagon before the clouds opened with a deluge. With the
return of darkness, Tabeta put out a trembling hand for her unknown companion.
Nobody was there.
She didn't know where he had gone, and she didn't care. She was getting OUT of
here.
Three more steps and her groping hand found the corner of the building. The
alley beyond it was no place for a lady--no alleys were in this part of the city--but
it was better than being in sight of the people around that wagon, if they should
turn to look in her direction. Better than being in sight of that...whatever it was
that was ON the wagon. She rounded the corner and began to run.
Another blast of lightning, brighter and longer than any so far. The ground
shook with it. And kept on shaking once darkness returned. Tabeta staggered but
kept running. There was a powerful smell of the swamp. The alley mud under her feet
shifted, or maybe it was the entire ground that was rippling like the surface of the
bay in a high wind. Tabeta stumbled, fell into mud that was fluid as water but
seemed to be sucking her down, scrambled to her feet, and was thrown down again.
The buildings around her were shaking, which she could tell only because the
spots of light from lamps mounted on their street walls were dancing up and down,
back and forth. She fixed her eyes on the nearest one as an achievable goal and
forced herself to her hands and knees.
More thunder, but without the lightning this time. The lamp she was watching
shook and fell from its bracket, smashed on the ground, flaming oil running along the
alley. The building began to burn.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
I call for a vote of censure against Eagles Lair! That Fink of a Bird had the
GALL, the unmitigated lack of couth, to defeat me! ME! I should WIN on the fight
which sees my Notice of Appreciation from Sheila Greywand! Could that Feathered
Freak see the justice of that? No, of course not! Everybody knows that birds have
brains the size fleas and about as sensible. Huh, even DUCKS are better than eagles.
Stupid, of course, and conceited, but at least they aren't RAPTORS.
And listen, all you gladiators, and you managers, too! Jorja has the NERVE, the
sheer primate GALL, to say I'm mediocre! What does SHE know? She's a basher, after
all. I'm going to the Isle, and I'm going to FIGHT on the Isle, no sitting on a
bench for ME. Oh, no. Nobody will look at ME and talk about Mouses not stirring! I
thought of going to Home Guard, but they tell me the place is infested with Ducks, so
it's Free Blades for me. See you there.
Lord Protector
Mouse Noyle
P.S. How dare you be courteous to me, Eagles Lair? Now I have to be courteous back,
and I HATE that. (muttering, and not very loudly, either) Good fight.
SPY REPORT
So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Don't these new hotshots make you sick (or, if
they fought you, hurt)? ART OF CONFLICT, on their very first turn, went 4-1-0. Hey
everybody, watch out for NAPOLEON, who flew up 18 points in the rankings after
mashing KHALHUMS DWARF like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days
it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. D.M.O.C. was overcame by VURZHAL UR and
drops 4 points. Well, everybody's pal MOUSE NOYLE moved his record to 23-32-0 by
defeating M. CHARDINEE in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 5 recognition
points. Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad DANCE OF DEATH? Big bad DANCE
OF DEATH. Big bad DANCE OF DEATH. ALJAFIR's afraid of the big bad DANCE OF DEATH.
Tra la la la la! And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause
LET'S DUEL! beats feet every time DANCE OF DEATH smiles at them. Try farming, eh?
And who is this PIP THE TROLL you ask, with 35 points and a 8-5-0 record. Ooh, the
tales I could tell!
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Knowing when to use the right tactics at
the proper time is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ALJAFIR have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the
world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And
remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've
heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster

Longsword Lambada -- (mournfully) I just couldn't catch the rhythm on that one.
I've never been good with things like that. Two left feet, no rhythm, and then, of
course, there's the effect of "staggering with exhaustion." I just can't seem to
dance. -- Daron El
P.S. You golems are just too much for me.
Daron El -- Everything is too much for you, monkey. -- Mouse Noyle
Broadsword Ballet -- Have you considered that the ballet may not be your proper
dance? Perhaps you were meant to do the minuette. However that's spelled. Hmm.
You could have a "morning star minuet," except that the name would be too long. --
Vurzhal Ur
P.S. A Fist Foxtrot? Halberd Hollandaise? No, that's a salad dressing. A Mace
Minuet? A Warhammer Waltz?
P.P.S. Too bad there isn't a good weapon to go with the tango. THERE is a dance for
a warrior if I ever saw one.
Toothpick Tango? -- Ed.
Junior Vasquez -- (brooding darkly) Bury me in the sand, will you? The loss, the
lack of skills taught, I can take all that. It's nothing new. But I will NOT take a
"bury in the sand" lying down! OR standing up. -- Tabeta Unis
Graceful Charity -- The grace I can see, damn you. It's probably because you're part
cat. All Ratani are, they just don't show it as much as the Aruaki do. But the
charity...where was THAT? -- Marin Neh
P.S. Okay, good sort of fight, if you like that kind of thing, and I certainly don't
object to the skills.
P.P.S. Good gods, you don't have the strength for THAT? I should think you WOULD
train it, then. Good luck.
D.M.O.C. -- I was devastated by your cruelty, and your selfishness! Just because I'm
a thief doesn't mean I have no feelings. -- Partiss
Purple Heart -- Only because I allowed it. -- Terregolis, the most Dangerous Criminal
in Aljafir
Achilles -- You're not being helpful here. -- Lej Korranjal, a Guard with Ambitions
