Les Korranjal, the Ambitious Guard, stood with his back to a locked door and
watched the rain come down. Between darkness and falling rain, he couldn't see the
bay, though it was only twenty feet in front of him.  Well, he didn't need to see it;
he knew what Aljafir Bay looked like, by night and by day.
     "No sign of the courier."
Korranjal twitched and looked down at Shagrath the Assassin. He hated it when
people sneaked up on him. Especially people like Shagrath. "We won't be able to see
the courier ship anyway, in this downpour."
The dwarf snorted. "You may not be able to see it, but I'd see it well enough.
If it was out there. I figure the Black Ship got it."
"If there is a Black Ship. All I've heard is rumors."
"It's out there," Shagrath said. "I have seen it. Me, not 'a third-cousin
once-removed of a friend'. Me."
The Guard looked down at him again. "You're no sailor--"
"I saw it from the shore. West of here. Full moon, no mist to confuse the eye.
It had two masts, sails up on both, but they weren't...it wasn't moving right for the
wind that was blowing on the shore."
     "The wind can vary."
"Sure. But there was another boat out there at the same time, and it was moving
with the wind I could feel. Running from the Black Ship. Didn't do any more good
than rabbit running from a hawk."
Korranjal frowned, running his palm up and down the scabbard of his sword. If
anyone else had told that story, he wouldn't have believed it. But Shagrath wouldn't
lie...at least, not about the Black Ship. "They say it comes from Kurukar."
"Some say that. Others blame Stormcrowe."
"No, the Crowes are losing as many ships as we are."
"That doesn't prove--" The dwarf tensed, his hand closing hard on Korranjal's
arm. "There," he whispered. "There!"
The rain still made a curtain in front of the doorway, but a greenish light was
shining through it. Very bright, as though a full moon had come into the bay, but
the light had a dark center, and it moved from left to right. One scream, cut off.
A second, cut off. Then darkness and silence.

                                      SPY REPORT

So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Hey everybody, watch out for BARRACUDA, who
flew up 15 points in the rankings after mashing VURZHAL UR like a melon. Keep your
eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands.
VURZHAL UR was bested by BARRACUDA and drops 8 points. Our battling duelmaster
ACHILLES has managed to hold the title, fending off DARON EL's none too subtle
advances. Better luck next time, MIDDLE WAY. Advice to bashers--never force
anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Here is other news that is of note. Well just about everybody wants a piece of
VURZHAL UR, who was this week's most challenged warrior.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Here's some advice: warriors
with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ALJAFIR have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the
world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And
remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've
heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster

Achilles -- I am really, really glad you are graduating. I wish you'd done it months
ago. Etc. And I wish you well on the Isle. -- Daron El
P.S. What else can I say? Some have it and some don't.

Pip the Troll -- I could learn to hate trolls, if you were a troll, but since you're
a half-elf, I'll hate them, instead. Not that there is any point to that, but who
needs a point? I just need something with enough energy in it to keep me coming out
on the sands. -- Tabeta Unis
P.S. Coming out on the sands, over and over again, has to rate as one of the most
insanely optimistic activities known to man, elf, dwarf, orc, etc.

Pfc Lynch -- I salute you, young woman, and offer you one of the most valuable things
you can have this early in your career: a loss. Yes, trust me, a loss will stand
you in good stead, keep you from getting to over-confident, and make you less of a
target for the iconoclasts. -- Vurzhal Ur
P.S. Plus, the two skills are nothing for you to sneeze at, either.
P.P.S. Though why anyone would SNEEZE at skills or the like escapes me.

Barracuda -- There was something distinctly fishy about that. -- Obida Paniri

Marshall -- I guess it's true that I'm not cut out for this kind of thing, isn't it?
Too bad I don't get a chance to make a second choice. -- Ghost of Quordis Rhon
P.S. What did you have against my face, anyway? I never stopped a clock with it.

Judge -- We're on strike. -- Les Korranjal, the Ambitious Guard and spokesman for the
Standbys
P.S. We want to retain learned skills, improve our fighting ability, graduate, and
become immortal, just like the rest of you. Is this unreasonable?
P.P.S. But if you're going to talk to us, we'll talk back.

20 April 2005
I have returned after a five-year absence. I expect all tithes, gifts and bequeaths
to resume as normal. -- Magic Man

4 May 2005
Several questions have been asked about Slaughter's Challenge that I'd like to
address and clarify.
     1) All Prizes must be used on the contest team, this includes the resurrection.
Remember any fast arena team should be able to transfer to a slow arena
(except for arena 82, I believe).
     2) Warriors will be allowed to fight and run in the dead tourney, should there
be one, and return if an opening can be made without breaking the rules
(i.e. only one DA fight allowed per team).
     3) If you win your single DA match you do not get another. It's one use of the
Dark Arena win or lose so if you want him/her/it dead be sure and throw the
         match!
     4) The resurrection potion's longevity has been extended by the commission to 6
months but the other potions (favorites, and +1 bonus) must still be used
within 2 turns and on a 5 FE or higher warrior. The resurrection can go on
         any warrior regardless of FE.
Street Legal

P.S. My thanks to those already entered (Hammer, The Consortium, Tripwire, Stik, and
Shaman) and hope many more find a reason to come to arena 54. Again, my email is
triumph1971@hotmail.com or you can diplo me in arena 14 at THE DEATH SQUAD (63) if
you need more info!
