Aljafir:

Les Korranjal, the Ambitious Guard, stood with his back to a locked door and
watched the rain come down. Between darkness and falling rain, he couldn't see the
bay, though it was only twenty feet in front of him.  Well, he didn't need to see it;
he knew what Aljafir Bay looked like, by night and by day.
     "No sign of the courier."
Korranjal twitched and looked down at Shagrath the Assassin. He hated it when
people sneaked up on him. Especially people like Shagrath. "We won't be able to see
the courier ship anyway, in this downpour."
The dwarf snorted. "You may not be able to see it, but I'd see it well enough.
If it was out there. I figure the Black Ship got it."
"If there is a Black Ship. All I've heard is rumors."
"It's out there," Shagrath said. "I have seen it. Me, not 'a friend of a
third-cousin once-removed'. Me."
The Guard looked down at him again. "You're no sailor--"
"I saw it from the shore. West of here. Full moon, no mist to confuse the eye.
It had two masts, sails up on both, but they weren't...it wasn't moving right for the
wind that was blowing on the shore."
     "The wind can vary."
"Sure. But there was another boat out there at the same time, and it was moving
with the wind I could feel. Running from the Black Ship. Didn't do any more good
than rabbit running from a hawk."
Korranjal frowned, running his palm up and down the scabbard of his sword. If
anyone else had told that story, he wouldn't have believed it. But Shagrath wouldn't
lie...at least, not about the Black Ship. "They say it comes from Kurukar."
"Some say that. Others blame Stormcrowe."
"No, the Crowes are losing as many ships as we are."
"That doesn't prove--" The dwarf tensed, his hand closing hard on Korranjal's
arm. "There," he whispered. "There!"
The rain still made a curtain in front of the doorway, but a greenish light was
shining through it. Very bright, as though a full moon had come into the bay, but
the light had a dark center, and it moved from left to right. One scream, cut off.
A second, cut off. Then darkness and silence.
"What did you see?" Korranjal asked. He knew that he himself had seen...
something, but Shagrath's vision was more acute.
"The Black Ship," the dwarf said. "And I figure it got the courier."
The Ambitious Guard nodded. The courier from Zuwayza was an obvious target for
the Black Ship, no matter what enemy--Kurukar, Stormcrowe, or someone else entirely--
had sent it out. "I guess the Satrap, may Kjarran bless him, didn't believe in the
Black Ship. I guess Zuwayza is too far away--"
"What's his belief got to do with it?" Shagrath growled. The Assassin's eyes
were still fixed on the rain-blind night, as though he could see something out
there."
"Ah, yes, you wouldn't have known--the kaliv asked for a master magician.
Someone who could deal with the Ship--"
"Hmm." The dwarf sighed. "You have a point. Seems like the courier didn't
even put up a fight. I wish there was something we--"
The darkness was torn by lightning leaping up from the bay, down from the
clouds, meeting in a storm of light. For a moment, even Korranjal could see the two
ships on the bay, the Black Ship with its sails extended like wings, and the courier
with a pillar of brilliance on its deck.
"By the claws of the Dragon!" Shagrath's tone was reverent, which was unusual
for him. "I think the Satrap DID believe," he said.
Light and darkness roiled into a twisting waterspout between the two ships. The
Black Ship's sails beat like wings, fighting the inverted whirlpool. The courier, an
oared galley, was also struggling to get away. But neither side abated the force it
was casting into that maelstrom.
The Guard shook off his paralysis. "We've got to do something!"
"Such as what?" Shagrath asked. "That's a job for magicians. Or sailors."
Behind them, the horns on the great temple of Kjarran blared louder than
thunder, signaling a special service.
Shagrath hunched away from the sound. A special service usually meant a special
sacrifice, and anyone not of the True Blood was at risk at such a time.
"Kjarran will settle the Black Ship," Korranjal said. "He will not desert us in
our need."

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. ALJAFIR needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Too bad, MIDDLE WAY,
but HEROESANDFOUNDONES was just too good to be stopped. MVP award for MAXIMUS?
HEROESANDFOUNDONES' proud of him after beating STRAIGHT LINE and getting 11 points.
Talk about yer big time losers! OBIDA PANIRI got smashed by MARSHALL, and lost 3
points! This Duelmaster is like something else! HI-JINX stopped TABETA UNIS dead in
hers tracks! I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep.
They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of PROJECT MAYHEM XXX must be getting
lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't?
Is there some deep dark secret why HEROESANDFOUNDONES' been avoiding PROJECT MAYHEM
XXX so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can MIDDLE WAY's VURZHAL UR be
more popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you?
Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Remember
you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte

Alexander the Great -- If you say so. (heavy sigh) Jorja says anybody can beat me,
even without being great, but hey, my record isn't THAT bad, is it? I mean, sure, I
don't have to worry about being sent to the Dark Arena, but I still feel a little
anxiety, you know. A guy can DIE out there on the sands, after all, and I have to
get a minimum of fourteen wins to graduate. That's been proved (by a warrior who
died at over one hundred fights, but only eleven or something wins). I don't want to
die before my graduation occurs, or after it either, for that matter, so give me a
hand here, okay? -- Vurzhal Ur

Hi-Jinx -- Well, it looks like it'll be a while before I produce a recognizable
signature, doesn't it? Does this mean (gasp of horror) that I won't be able to spend
money? No, surely not--I can get cash, can't I? I could STEAL cash, if I had to,
I'm cross enough. Those blows may have been non-fatal, in fact, they WERE non-fatal,
but they hurt even so. -- Tabeta Unis

Convicted Assassin, whoopee-do. I'm not taking a loss to some dwarf, just because I
happen to be immortal! He can consider himself lucky to be alive! -- Daron El, anti-
assassin

Pyro -- I have, if you will pardon the phrase, a burning desire to see you shut down
now that the tourney is past. -- Obida Paniri

Marshall -- I didn't do it! -- Straight Line
P.S. Honest.
